    Ethernet-Based Smart Plugs?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 05:04 PM PDT

    Hi,

I am trying to add a few lamps and a fan to smart plugs at work. However, I am only allowed Ethernet/wired connections (and one wireless connection-my phone).

Is there anyway to acccomplish this? Using my Wired iPad as a hub for Apple Home? A wired hub? ETC.

    ALL ideas appreciated.

    Thanks!

    August Lock Connect Bridge?

Is the connect bridge required for accessing the smart lock from a distance, or can you connect some other way?

I have a bunch of smart speakers, lights and a camera. Should I get some type of hub?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 10:58 PM PDT

Would it make more sense if all these devices linked to a hub or something and that linked to my router? I've got 15+ things connected to my router. But I can't even figure out what I would need. A second router? Do all my devices need to be the same make?

    As the title suggests.

I don't even know if there is such a thing. I would like to create routines with Alexa that are activated based on the identified person.

Example: if you see X, turn on the TV when he goes away.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

    Where can i find a 0-10v led PWM controller/driver with 120VAC output?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 06:40 PM PDT

Hi Folks - I'm struggling with this one as everything I find has a low-voltage output.

    Input: 120VAC
    Output: 120VAC PWM, 1amp
    Control signal: 0-10V

Basically I need a wall-mounted LED dimmer switch-like device (but one that is not wall-mountable), that accepts 0-10V input for the PWM control.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

    Kasa TP Link Setup Trouble

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 03:17 PM PDT

I bought 2 HS200 switches to install but had some trouble getting it to work. My light switch has a red wire, one black that's looped, and some white wires bundled in the back. The original switch has the red wire up top and the black wire on the bottom. The electrician that I hired tied the 2 black wires on the TP Link to the black loop, the white to the red switch, and left the green as is. When we tried to turn it on, the TP Link switch was receiving power but when we connected it and clicked the switch, the light didn't turn on. Not really sure what's going on but from the tutorials I saw online I think the white wires were neutral but the electrician said those were probably 3 way's and attached to the red.

Aged Care Smart home tech - Ultimate smart home for your aging mum?

Aged Care Smart home tech - Ultimate smart home for your aging mum?

Mum doesn't want to go to an aged care home. I am looking to setup smart home tech that we can use to monitor her well being, (without cameras). There is a service that facilitates this with a $70 monthly fee. I am thinking I could build something myself with the tech that is available. I am looking for suggestions of tech that would replicate the services below and even better it.

What would be your ultimate smarthome setup for your aging parent(Mum)?

Create a Trigger for Mini Split (NetHome Plus)

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 08:29 PM PDT

I am trying to create a sequence that if the Living Room Light - Center is off, the Mini Split temperature will be turned down to 69 degrees.

There is a schedule in the app, but my husband doesn't go to sleep at the same time every night/day, so I need it to work off of another smart device's status.

The NetHome Plus has been successfully sync'd to Google and Alexa.

With Google there is no way to do any type of routine similar to this, we all know that.

With Alexa, I will attempt to add a routine, add a "When this happens," select "Smart Home," but only motion detectors and vibration sensors appear, no lights. If I could just get lights to appear here, this would actually work.

The mini split isn't compatible with Smartthings, so this is definitely a no-go. I have written to the company that created the app, but, as expected, no response.

Even if I could get an IFTTT to work for this would be great. I do "If (Smartthings) Living Room - Center is off, Then... And nothing. Alexa, Smartthings, Google, nothing is available to be chosen.

This is driving me nuts. What ideas do you guys have out there?

    Ecobee Contact Sensor Question

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 07:26 PM PDT

Hi all: recently we received some new Ecobee smart thermostats and contact sensors. I put one of the contact sensors on our freezer door so if it stays open, ideally I can get a notification to my phone to fix it. Apparently Ecobee has a subscription base (called Haven) for alerts & notifications, but I read if I set up the sensor into the native HomeKit app on my iPhone, I'd be able to get it through HomeKit. I got this working perfectly and every time the door opens and closes I get a push notification. Now my goal is to find a way to set it up to when it opens, but does not close after 3-5 minutes, I get an alarm on my phone, or our alexas make a noise, or our lights start blinking, etc. Anyone have any idea how I could make this happen? So far I can't figure anything out, but I am also brand new to HomeKit. Thanks so much!

Going crazy looking for an "86 type" old work recessed box

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 06:25 PM PDT

Hello HA hive mind. I have been pulling my hair out trying to track down something that appears not to exist. And I can't believe that's possible!

I want to install a type 86 (86mm x 86 mm) international standard widget* in a US home. Should be easy enough, right? Not so fast, I don't have a stud to hang it on and I want it recessed like any other USian switch or outlet would be. If I were using a US standard thing I'd just pop over to Home Depot, Lowes, or literally any other home improvement store and buy what is called an "Old Work" box . Just drill a hole in the drywall, use a drywall knife to cut it to size, pop the box in, and when you tighten the screws and a couple of wings get extended to secure the box to the inside of the drywall. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

But no matter what terms I use I can't seem to find anything that fits the bill. All I have found look like they get screwed directly onto something inside the wall. For example this one at Newegg or this one from Amazon.

Lots of asian and euro switches seem to use the "86 type" standard so I'm asking here hoping that someone else has done this before.

    HELP!

\* if you mist know it's a Z-Wave thermostat that works with my condo's fan coil unit. A sufficiently oddball system that the options for smart thermostats are extremely limited.

Should I go with the Roborock S4 or Eufy Robovac L70?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 04:30 PM PDT

I'm looking to buy a robot vacuum and I'm having a hard time choosing between the Eufy Robovac L70 and Roborock S4. Both use Lidar navigation and have pretty good reviews, but I can't decide on which to buy. The price is also fairly similar since the Robotock S4 is $399.99 and the Eufy Robovac L70 is $379.99. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Smart Switches with no Neutral Require requirement, but also no Bridge requirement for phone control?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 04:03 PM PDT

The cheapest and most effective option I could find was an Etekcity dimmer switch that requires no bridge whatsoever, but requires a neutral wire. Only $20. For such a cheap price, why does it only require an app to control the lights? Why do more expensive brands and switches all require a bridge to function? I get that it's to create more of a smart home environment, but surprised none that I can find can be controlled directly.

Cheapest smart plug/outlet with power consumption stats?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 09:16 AM PDT

So, I have a Lasko tower fan thats IR controlled that Id like to add some more functionality to. Right now, im communicating with it via a Harmony Hub, and have buttons setup in HA. That works great. The issue is, the fan has no way to know its state so i cant do automations all that well as it may turn it off when its on, or the other way around, etc. My thought is to add a smart plug/outlet and monitor power consumption. If power consumption is greater than a certain level, the fan is on, if its not, the fan is off. Being that its just a cheap tower fan, I dont want to invest too much into this project. Whats the cheapest plug that can achieve this? I dont even necessarily need the ability to turn the plug on and off, just having the power stats would be enough i think.

Vera, Home Assistant or something else, help me decide! Complex setup.

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 09:08 AM PDT

We recently moved from a condo that had several Hue bulbs and 2-3 Z-Wave switches, all ran with a SmartThings hub, into a large-ish house with a detached garage. The house has a Qolsys IQ2+ panel and Alarm.com, although I'm starting to hit the limitations of it pretty fast.

What I'd like to do is integrate another controller, either as the primary or secondary to the IQ2+ (the panel supports both) to supplement and take over certain things such as scenes.

Currently, I have 16 Z-Wave dimmers, mostly Inovelli and some GE, 2 Kwikset z-wave locks, a Liftmaster MyQ controller, a RainBird irrigation system, plus two rooms with Hue bulbs (that I can't control with my current system). I also have 6 Z-Wave baseboard thermostats.

Here is the functionality I'd like to achieve:

    • More granular control over lights & scenes as Alarm.com is a bit limiting
    • Add 3-4 scene keypads, or alternatively control the scenes from my Inovelli dimmers that have scene capability
    • Leverage the Inovelli RGB notification light
    • Add Z-Wave motion/occupancy sensors to control lighting as leveraging the security motion detectors is limiting
    • Integrate Sonos multi-room audio
    • Gain control of my Hue bulbs through the system

It's also very important to us to maintain the Alarm.com panel and usage as we have quite an elaborate security system that is monitored and we need to keep that.

I'm not familiar with the use of other HA platforms, however I'm a very technically proficient person and I'm confident I could learn the most complex of systems. We don't have a need to have it up and running ASAP so I can take my time learning it. It's very important that it remains simple to operate to end users to maintain the Wife Acceptance Factor - I am to be the only one tinkering with it.

I am looking into Home Assistant, VeraPlus, Homeseer - but am also open to any other suggestions. VeraPlus seems to be a match for everything I need, but maybe I'm not seeing something.

    Thanks in advance!

    Ra 2 Select vs Caseta

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 01:01 PM PDT

I know this has been discussed before, but I am still struggling to clearly understand the real, practical differences in my daily use of a RA 2 vs Caseta system.

I am tempted to go RA2 just to have the "more professional" product/service, and I do like some of the aesthetics more, but it is a LOT more money. I am not looking for a huge debate on this, as has been had before, but more looking for:

What will be the ACTUAL differences in my day to day life?

Thanks to anyone who can help with some concrete examples, and sorry if it's a bit of a stupid question!

Robot vacuum with 5GHz wifi support - or not?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 11:28 AM PDT

    Hello!

I'm in the market for new robot vacuum, quite small apartment, but with two kids and a dog. I actually made my choice (roborock s6), but then I found out, that almost none of the robot vacuums support 5GHz wifi network.

I have dual band router, but I have two separate wifi networks, as 2.4GHz is almost unusable in my area, speed vary alot, the connection fails all the time so all connected electronics in my home - smartphones, chromecast, smart tv, hifi streamer etc. - is operating on 5GHz network.

I found out, that there are only a few robots with 5GHz support - roomba i7, which is too expensive for me and doesn't have laser radar and needs light to operate and neato botvac D7 - which can be bought for 500USD atm, but everyone is saying, that they are really glad that they made a switch to roborocks and there are also reliability issues.

So how does it really work? I can connect my smartphone to 2.4GHz to set up the vacuum, but I will loose access to all the connected electronics, or is the wifi used only for first setup and then I can operate the vacuum via bluetooth? Or should I just buy the neato botvac d7?

    Thanks!

    WAF Poem

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 10:48 AM PDT

I received the following poem over text from my wife this morning, and I had to share it... (The Wife Acceptance Factor is a very real thing)

    A poem, just for you...

Here I sit, quiet as a mouse,

Afraid to move in our paid off house.

Can't blink, giggle, or even cough,

For fear that I might inadvertently turn all the lights off.

Can't watch TV or answer the phone,

But I got my gal Alexa, so I'm never alone.

Remember when I asked you for a ring?

Well I wasn't talking 'bout that front porch thing.

You say you do it all for me,

But Hon, I was happy with '80's technology.

Everything upgraded and now it's calm,

What's this? Oh no, another box from Amazon!

So here I sit wondering how come,

    A beautiful Smart Home,

    Can make me feel dumb?

Can I get a notification for non smart doorbells?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 04:38 AM PDT

So I live in a rented apartment and cannot install a smart doorbell. But because I work at home I am usually with headphones and miss when someone rings.

I was thinking if there was any device that can react with the doorbell (either sound or when the box vibrates) and get me a notification on the pc.

PS. I live in an apartment so it has do be something you use with the inside buzzer.
