Good job SmartThings... over 70% of my devices now running locally. Posted: 05 Aug 2020 07:25 AM PDT I know some people on here look down on the SmartThings platform for it's long-standing dependence on the cloud. I've honestly never had an issue with the cloud dependency, because it's worked reliably for me for over 3 years. However, I understand why it's an issue for some people. The good news is that I can see that Samsung is making some major changes to allow their platform to be less cloud dependent. I migrated to the new SmartThings app a week ago, and while the process wasn't 100% seamless, I was able to get everything working again without too much effort. What really surprised me, is that now 74 out of the 102 devices I have, show up as running locally. The only ones that aren't running locally are non-ZWave/Zigbee devices from companies like Ecobee, Xiaomi, Ikea, etc, that I didn't expect to run locally anyway. That's REALLY impressive to me. Now, I'm still using Webcore, so I know not all of the automations I'm using run locally... so, Samsung still has some work to do in that area. Obviously, voice commands executed through Google still have a cloud dependence too. But, to me, this shows as big step in the right direction, and get's me excited for the future of the platform. If anyone from Samsung reads this... good job and keep it up! [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Aug 2020 04:30 AM PDT I want an army of smart multi-plugs turning stuff on and off and my home is only 1600sq ft. Zigbee or Z Wave? Z Wave is more expensive (seemingly?) but seems slightly more secure from what I've read. I have the SmartThings hub. I'm concerned about security and safety, but idk which is the best choice and hear various things about responsiveness. What do you think??? 🤷♀️ [link] [comments]
How big of a concern for you is control over your home appliances? Posted: 05 Aug 2020 06:48 PM PDT I'm very new to the idea of "home automation," and I'm considering buying a robotic vacuum. The one I'm thinking of is called the 360 S7, which seems to be the best on the market at its price range. However, it is a Chinese-made vacuum controlled by an app. Two concerns I have heard about this type of gadget are: 1) if the manufacturer ever decides to shut down its servers, the vacuum will be bricked. Stories like this and this and this are examples, and a vacuum created by a Chinese manufacturer with no notable consumer-facing presence in the West might be particularly likely to brick. 2) The vacuum may simply be Chinese spyware. Apparently the app that you have to download uses many odd permissions on Android. I would use an iPhone but this still seems bizarre. The layout of my place or how often I use a vacuum isn't the most sensitive data in the world, of course. And while some have warned about what data apps like TikTok siphon out of your phone, others have said those warnings are overblown or xenophobic - that there's nothing more concerning about these apps than something like Facebook. Having just been subject to a rather disconcerting email bombing attack a couple weeks ago, which was tied to nothing I could figure out whatsoever, I find all this very important and also very impossible to fully grasp. I don't really know what's going on with these sort of issues, and maybe no one does? What are your thoughts? [link] [comments]

Is Harmony Hub the answer for automating my set up? Posted: 05 Aug 2020 10:38 AM PDT Hey all - have a fairly basic set up: Google Home Mini NVIDIA Shield Epson Home Cinema 2150 projector Elite Screens ELECTRIC100H motorized screen Philips Hue color bulbs The projector and screen have separate remotes. I want to get to a point where I can tap one button or say a voice command to dim the lights, turn on the projector and lower the screen. It seems like Harmony Hub (no remote) is compatible with all devices. Could this be a solution? Would I maybe also need an IR blaster or an entirely different Harmony Hub product? Do I not even need the Hub and this could be achieved through Home Mini? Thanks in advance. Happy to provide additional info. [link] [comments]

Smart dimmers and switches - which ones should I get? Posted: 05 Aug 2020 02:26 PM PDT Hey guys, Need some help determining the hardware I need for my house. Living room/kitchen have recessed lighting that have controls at 2 locations. I'm looking to have a smart dimmer put in one location and a smart switch (like https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07ZSF554H/) in the other. I'm seeing smart three way dimmer "kits", like https://www.amazon.com/Dimmer-Dimmable-Compatible-Neutral-Required/dp/B07R4ZCD2C/ which have dimmers at both control points, which is not what I need. Can I have a smart dimmer coupled with a smart switch for such a configuration? Also, at the stairway which has 2 control points for the lights, would something like this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07ZSF554H/ work at both ends? Thanks [link] [comments]
Nest devices work outside of the US? Posted: 05 Aug 2020 05:59 PM PDT I'm from the Philippines and I wanna start automating my condo unit. I immediately thought of getting Nest devices but sadly, there aren't any Nest resellers or distributors here in the Philippines. I have a friend in the US that can buy me stuff over there and ship them here. So I was wondering, would Nest devices still work even if they're installed outside of the US? [link] [comments]

Cannot integrate Smartthings with HA Posted: 05 Aug 2020 04:36 PM PDT Hi! I just set up my Raspberry Pi 4 (8gb) today and followed the instructions to run HA using Docker (is there a better way?). I tried to integrate with ST with HA and generated a token, even set up a Nabu Casa account but when I entered the token in HA, it said that it could not connect. Eventually, I ended up restarting my RPi and now when I go to the HA and try to integrate Smartthings (I click on "Configuration" --> "Integration" --> "+" button and scroll down to "Smartthings"), a little pop-up says, "Please wait while the integration is being installed" and then it goes back to the "Setup a New Integration" box without anything happening. If I go to "Configuration" --> "Home Assistant Cloud" --> "Webhooks" I can see that there's one for Smartthings enabled but none of my devices appear. I'm using HA 0.113.3, Raspberry Pi 4 (8gb), and Docker. Thanks! [link] [comments]

Posted: 05 Aug 2020 03:20 PM PDT Hello all! My smart home currently has a mixture of Ring devices (cameras, sensors, security), TP Link switches and plugs, and a few one offs like Ecobee and Roomba. Today, I'm doing really simple automation tasks via my Alexa. As you know, routines in Alexa can only be so complicated, and you can't do things like (if x AND y) then (z). With that in mind, I thought it time to upgrade to a SmartThings hub to do command and control. Is this the logical next step? Am I missing something? [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Aug 2020 08:58 AM PDT So when I built my house I had outlets installed in the upper part of my kitchen cabinets that are controlled by a 3-way switch. The intent was for above/below cabinet lighting. Downside is I was not able to choose top and/or bottom lights. I found a z-wave switch that I can program to do certain functions based on the number of taps. What I want to do is install the z-wave switch so that on 1 tap it turns on top lights, 2 taps turns on bottom, and 3 taps for both? Are there z-wave outlets that each receptacle is controlled? Everything I have been able to find is 1 controlled/1 always-on. I am not opposed to using a plug-in, but I would prefer not to fill up the space with wall warts. [link] [comments]
2 basic questions regarding switches and relay switches (like the shelly/sonoff) Posted: 05 Aug 2020 07:32 AM PDT
I've been considering adding a relay switch into my existing wall switches, but I'm not sure how people are using it with "normal" switches that has an on off position. Wouldn't there be an inconsistency where the relay would be on but the light switch position in the off position and muddle it? In a UX perspective, I have switches that controls lights/devices far away that I can't see. I rely on the light switch position to let me know if the light is on because I cannot see the lights from the light switches. For people that are putting relays into switches that has on/off positions, how do they deal with this discrepancy? [link] [comments]

Problems with TP-Link Kasa HS210 switches Posted: 05 Aug 2020 10:58 AM PDT I bought a bunch of HS210 TP-Link switches and I'm having a lot of issues. Some I cant find their wifi for to set them up, and the others have lots of problems with losing their signal and me not being able to control them any more. Does anyone have experience troubleshooting these switches? [link] [comments]
