$10 smart bulb vs $45 smart bulb.. do I actually get $35 more bulb?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 06:20 PM PDT

I'm looking at putting smart bulbs in my living room (with various colors) so I can have 'normal' lighting, 'movie' lighting, 'reading' lighting, etc.

    Two Hue bulbs are $90

Two of these smart bulbs are $20

Why is there such a price difference? Is the Hue really worth 4x the price, and if so, what am I getting for that? I plan to hook these up to Alexa or Google Home .

    Thanks!

Is there such a thing as two separate wireless light switches that control the same group of light bulbs?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 08:50 PM PDT

My kitchen has two entrances but only one entrance has a light switch. Whenever I want to leave the kitchen through the second entrance I always forget to turn the lights off so I have to go back into the kitchen to reach the first entrance, turn off the lights, and then go back to leaving the second entrance. The easiest solution would be to install another light switch but I'm renting the place and I want to avoid making a hole in the wall and playing with wires so I've been eyeing products like the Philips Wireless Dimmer switch but for that, only one switch controls multiple bulbs. I'm looking for 2 connected smart wireless light switches that I could put on both entrances that control the same group of bulbs in the kitchen. Probably a long shot but I thought I'd ask.

    Making my radiator smarter

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 03:32 PM PDT

Hello everyone, i move in a new house and i would like to change the heater system to improve the new one. I would like to change the Thermostat with a wifi one (i don't know which one yet but nothing to fancy or expensive) and the radiators valves with this type (https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41pQ3fuxixL._AC_SY400_.jpg). Since the valves are not connected to internet but the Thermostat does, there will be any issues? Could they work together?

PS new house is an independent one, not a flat

    Thanks :)

Connect Single 3-way Light in 3-gang Box (Lutron Caseta)

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 06:36 PM PDT

I have a 3-gang box with the following 4 cables that I need to wire up 2 indoor lights and remove 1 outdoor light from the circuit. (I plan to connect the outdoor light up to a different breaker switch)

    • 1 cable from the breaker with black, white, and ground wires

    • 1 cable to an outdoor light with black, white, and ground wires (this I'm removing from the circuit)

    • 1 cable to a kitchen fluorescent light with black, white, and ground wires

    • 1 cable to a dimmable dining room light with black, white, red, and ground wires (I know this is part of a 3 way light with 1 other switch I've correctly set up)

I want to hook these lights up the following way to Lutron Caseta smart switches/dimmers

    • remove the outdoor light from the circuit (I think I can do this by just disconnecting the outdoor cable wires and capping them)

    • connect the kitchen light to a Caseta PD-5WS-DV Switch

    • connect the dining room light wires to power from the breaker (it's already connected to a Caseta Dimmer at the gang box at the other end)

All the white neutral wires are currently connected. And all the ground wires are currently connected.

When I connect the black breaker wire to only the dining room black and red wires, the dimmer works.

The problem is when I attempt to connect the kitchen light up to the Caseta Switch. The kitchen light doesn't come on and the switch LED doesn't turn on. But if I connect the black breaker wire directly to black kitchen wire, the light is on permanently.

    1. Why isn't the switch working with the kitchen light?
    2. How do I disconnect the outdoor light cable from this circuit?
    3. How do I connect the dining room wires and the kitchen wires to the breaker wires so they work together (and is that in series or parallel)?

    Onelink Safe & Sound

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 06:05 PM PDT

I have a couple of Onelink Safe & Sound units replacing a pair of Onelink wired smoke detectors; but for the life of me I can't get them to register; either with the Onelink iOS app or with Homekit directly (as their support doc suggests if the app fails). I dimly recall that when I installed the Onelinks, they were also flaky but I managed to get them working somehow- but I can't remember the somehow.

Has anyone else successfully gotten Safe & Sounds installed? I've already tried switching off 5ghz on my wifi network. I see the units associating & authenticating successfully, but then after a few minutes the app (or home.app) craps out and says something failed.

There's got to be something I'm missing.. what is it?

    Logitech Harmony Hub and Powerstrip?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 01:35 PM PDT

I'm looking to get a Logitech Harmony Hub to control some aquarium equipment. Having trouble finding any compatible powerstrips/plugs, however? I need something to turn on a water pump on an intermittent weekly schedule.

Don't want to use any janky cheap apps for this sort of thing so would prefer to stay in the Logitech architecture.

    Any advice appreciated!

    CCTV Installation Locations - Advice

    Hey All,

I'm new here so would first would like to say a big Hi. I'm in the process of buying a new property and I'm a massive geek so I'm sure you will see me around quite often :)

I'm hoping to get access to the new property soon and one of the first things I need to do is run cables and set up security. I've watched a ton of videos on YT on CCTV but the amount of comments I also saw that state the placement isn't great or correct has made me think that I need to seek some advice first.

I'm planning on using Ubiquiti network and CCTV gear, most likely the G4 Pro cameras and the G3 Pro

Below is a floor plan I've made up just to start planning

    Pretty straight forward

    • The red lines are the walls of the house
    • The brown lines are the surround walls of the property
    • The green lines are front, side and back gates.
    • The grey lines are windows and doors :)

I think the front and back gardens are pretty straight forward. I'm thinking installing the camera right int he middle of the front garden above the window which should cover the garden and also have a smart doorbell to cover the door.

At the rear of the property I'm thinking of having the camera in the corner where the surrounding wall meets the house so it's pointing towards the back gate.

The part I'm struggling with is how should I place the cameras on the side of the property, keeping mind that it is a corner house so the side is exposed.

Any advice you guys could give would be appreciated :)

    Multi-Room Audio opinions

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:22 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I am about to undertake a significant renovation project which means a lot of interior walls and ceiling will become accessible that normally isn't available. I would like to use this opportunity to install multi-room audio , thinking ceiling speakers would be nice as they are out of the way and not taking counterspace.

I currently use 3 amazon echos in 3 different rooms for my audio. It's good enough sound wise , so keep in mind I don't need something super hi-fi. What I want is simple to control so that a visitor could do it with simple instruction. I am not married to alexa, I'll gladly let her go for better options

i have read a few threads of people using several small amps with google chromecast devices connected to each, therefore making it a zone. This seems interesting, but is extra work/cost compared with a proper multi-zone audio amp?

I would probably be looking at 3-4 seperate audio zones, possibly expanding in the future should the desire arise.

I am just looking for opinions if a google home setup is worth pursuing or if I should scrap that right away and look at something else.

Question about the google nest thermostat

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:10 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I will soon be buying a google nest thermostat. I want to mount it on the wall, but all video's I see about how to install it don't do anything with the heat link. Why not? Do you not need the headlink if you connect it to thermostat wires? Or how does it work?

I will be moving into a new house, andthe people who are (re)building it told me to go and buy thermostat wires so I can mount the nest on the wall, because I like that more then putting it in the stand. (we completely removed the old thermostat and it's wires).

I can't really figure out which wires exactly to buy, and I am confused about my first point, I see no instruction video doing anything with the heat link that is coming with the nest.

    Lifx: Cannot connect to WiFi

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 08:21 AM PDT

Bought my first Lifx bulb and trying to connect it to my WiFi which is served by a Ruckus R510 access point with no success. I'm just not able to figure out why it doesn't connect, my Android 9 phone and the bulb are in the same broadcast domain so it must be an access point issue. I already did reset the bulb a few times and I know it's running as it is showing up within the Lifx app. I just cannot connect it to my SSID. The password is correct, checked it a lot of times. Has anyone successfully set up Lifx bulbs with Ruckus access points? Thank you in advance.

Can you use a Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Switch to control two outlets?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:01 PM PDT

I have a bedroom with two outlets connected to a light switch. In the process of installing TP-Link Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Light Switch (the non-dimmer one). Have it all installed and set up in the app, but it is not turning on the outlets in question. Now I come to the question is it even possible for this switch to control these since they are not a ceiling light fixture?

    Hue/Alexa/SmartThings?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 10:07 AM PDT

I'm relatively new to home automation. I currently have a Philips Hue hub with some Hue lights and other Zigbee lights connected. I operate these via Alexa using the PH skill, and all works fine.

I'm now looking to install some smart switches, but I have no hub to connect them to.

    1. Should I upgrade one of my Echo Dots to one with a smart hub (Echo Plus Gen 2?) or buy a ST hub and connect them to that?

    2. Once I have one of theses hubs, should I get rid of the Hue hub and connect everything to the new one, or is it better to keep both?

SBC recommendations for room-assistant (PoE, BLE, I2C pins)

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 06:51 AM PDT

I'm looking to add room-specific presence detection to my home with room-assistant, which should work nicely with my current Home Assistant setup. I'm trying to find a cheap board that I can power with PoE and connect with ethernet (not wi-fi). Bluetooth low energy is a must have. The cheaper and smaller, the better, for the most part. At some point, I'd like to add thermopile sensors to some of the devices so I'd like to have I2C pins for later use.

A raspberry pi zero W won't work, because it requires an adapter to be powered and it doesn't have an ethernet port for network connectivity. The RockPi S would be good, but they don't have a PoE module for it yet. BPI-P2 Zero is close, but it is already a little more expensive and doesn't have bluetooth. Most SBCs that I have been researching require a HAT or adapter for PoE, which often more than doubles the cost. If I have to, I'm happy to have a cheap board that I add a bluetooth or POE adapter to, but I'm trying to keep the cost (for board, power over ethernet, and bluetooth, without case), <$25 each.

    Any boards I've overlooked?

I have 3 of the Broadlink SP mini 3 smart switches. App will only let me connect 1. Solutions?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 03:36 AM PDT

The devices are connected to my network through a Broadlink app, but this app doesn't talk to Google Home.

Is there a way to connect to Broadlink wifi smart switches that can talk to Google Home but doesn't require the Broadlink apps (which are glitchy and can only seem to let me connect 1 device)
