    Robot vacuum <$500 recommendation?

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 01:21 PM PDT

Hello all I'm looking for a robot vacuum. I have hardwood floor and tiles in my home. No carpets yet. I'm interested in getting a Roborock as I have heard it's the best one (better than the roomba) but can't find S6 or S5 max new for less than $500. Not interested in the warranty but interested that it has to cost less than 500 and has to be new or refurbished (not used) One feature I'm particularly interested is the mopping feature so that I won't have to mop the house (hopefully?)

    Appreciate any recommendations!

Doorbell + Entry - Hope Reddit World can help

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 06:40 PM PDT

    Hi Reddit World,

So we are building a new house and I finally came to the conclusion that we are going to install a Doorbird but over and over again I read how bad the video quality is and how sketchy their push notifications are and so I just don't think it is a good idea. We currently have a Nest Hello installed at the current house and it has worked flawlessly since day one, so I want to go with the Nest Hello again. But here is the problem.

The new house is a little different, the front door is located behind a locked gate at street level. This gate will have a keypad and electronic lock. There will then also be a smart lock on the actual front door - think Yale or August - uncertain which one yet. From the designs, the gate should be under cover which means that the Nest Hello (Could technically) be placed there.

The idea is that when someone rings the doorbell, if we want to let them in, we can unlock the gate from the inside so that they can get in. We also want to be able to do this with the Driveway Gate. Since the Nest Hello does not support this, I am thinking we would need a separate set of buttons. So I am thinking of mounting a iPad Mini or Google Nest Hub inside which would alert when someone presses the Doorbell. Then there would be some buttons or something similar next to the screen which we could press to either open the drive way gate or unlock the front gate.

Does anyone have any smart ideas here?

    In wall scene controllers

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 02:23 PM PDT

I have an unused light switch in a multi gang box and am looking to add some physical scene control. Specifically I'm hoping to find something that

    1. Will fit in a multi gang switch box (nothing meant to be taped to a wall)
    2. has multiple buttons
    3. is wired
    4. is under $100

I know Inovelli and Zooz have light switches with scene control but I'm hoping to find something with buttons since that will be easier on the SO.

Unfortunately I haven't found anything that hits all 4 criteria.

Edit: should also specify that I'm looking for something that preferably works on z-wave or zigbee if possible.

Wiring help for 5 way swtich

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 01:50 PM PDT

I am trying to install my first zooz Zen 27 switch. It's part of 5 way switch (4 switches control the same light!) and 1 of the 4 has a dimmer - that's the one I'm replacing with the Zooz. Two of the other three are old ass toggle switches and the fourth is a paddle with 4 wires coming in/out.

I thought I had all of my wiring figured out but nothing happened after turning the power back on - the led didn't even light up on the switch.

The box is a total mess of wires since there are two other (unrelated) switches in the same box so I used my sweet paint skills to draw a diagram

The switch that's being replaced is a Lutron 603 which comes with the 2 red and 1 black soldered in.

Here's what I thought was going on. From the top left, gray is actually a white wire and is neutral. Black comes down but is capped and is hot. Pink coming down is also hot and is tied to the black that's attached to the switch. Two purples come into the box but so straight out the top right. Two other purples are coming into the box from the top right and are connected to the two red that are part of the swtich.

In the zooz, I had the pink going into Line, purples going into Load and Traveler, and white into neutral. Nothing happaned.

    Any suggestions?

Despite how dumb I probably sound, I've tried to be extremely cautious with shutting off power etc so I don't kill myself!

    Diagram again

While looking up solutions for mounted tablets I rarely see people suggest charging optimization (keeping the device charged between 30-80%)

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 09:45 AM PDT

I've been searching forums as I've been thinking about doing the same and it usually falls between the below camps

    1. Keep it plugged in 100% of the time, battery life doesn't matter if it's charging all the time
    2. Using home automation to turn on and off the charging cycles (requires passing battery data to the automation)
    3. Using native battery optimizations to shut off charging at certain percents (rare for some devices to have this)
    4. Root device and install battery charging optimizes that does what (3) does.

I'm thinking about doing (4) because the devices I have is too old for (3). This way I can save a smart plug and not do any automation to it and having the battery drain if the relay is turned off and home assistant goes offline at the same time.

For yourself if you have a wall mounted device, which do you use?

How can I make a google routine run only once a day?

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 04:55 PM PDT

Ideally, what I'm wanting is:- The first time each morning I walk into the living area: turn lights on, read news & read calendar- Turn lights off an hour later- Don't read news/calendar subsequent times I walk into that area

Devices/services I have available- Google Home/assistant (no amazon / smartthings / homekit)- Philips Hue devices (no lifx or other brands)

I have the lights on various on/off routines, that's fine through the hue app. It's not having google read news/calendar anytime someone walk around the living area that I'm struggling with. Any ideas?

Kasa HS200 and HS103 turning on and off by itself

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 12:51 PM PDT

Has anyone experienced this? A few times a day my Kasa devices turn off and on again within say 200ms.

A strange clue is that both of my devices do this at the same time. One is a wall switch, one is an wall plug.

Neither of them show activity for this in the kasa app's history.

There are no automation rules or schedules set up.

Looking for "smart" HDMI splitter (2-way) to incorporate into SmartThings

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 11:58 AM PDT

    I'm looking for a product like this - https://www.amazon.com/HDMI-Switch-4K-Splitter-Bi-Directional

Except that it could be incorporated into a SmartThings setup to automate routines, rather than being a physical switch that needs to be pressed.

    Use Case

I have an Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Chromecast that I want to route the HDMI signal dynamically between one of two TVs - one in my office and another in my living room. The goal would allow one person to play Xbox on the Living Room TV while another plays PlayStation on the Office TV. Or vice versa. Ultimately, I would want to achieve "Hey Google, Xbox Living Room" or "Hey Google, Xbox Office" - and it just works.

    Requirements

    1. the switch needs to avoid only supporting toggling. For example, if the switch has 2 ports - HDMI port A and port B - I do not want it to send a "toggle" command to switch the port from A to B or B to A. Rather, I want to send a "set Port A as active port" command. So in the event that port A is already the active port, the command no-ops because it's already in the correct state.
    2. switch should support HDMI 2.1 features (VRR, 4k120hz, auto low latency)
    3. avoid infrared (due to lack of reliability). One other potential problem caused by an infrared blast is that I will use multiples of these switches for my Xbox, PlayStation, etc so I don't want the wrong device to receive the infrared command (if that is possible).

Requirement 1 is an especially hard requirement, but I would be interested in switches that fail requirement 2, as it's unlikely that this product category is likely to be first in line with HDMI 2.1 features as it is such a new standard. And while avoiding infrared is important to me, I would still be interested in hearing about solutions that involve infrared because it may ultimately be the path I need to go down.

    End Goal
I want to make this so simple and reliable that a grandma could do it. I want to provide a 4 button remote that would run the following four Google Assistant routines, so here's the example for the living room:

    1. button 1 - "Xbox Living Room"
    2. button 2 - "PlayStation Living Room"
    3. button 3 - "Nintendo Switch Living Room"
    4. button 4 - "Chromecast Living Room"

For example, "Xbox Living Room" would:

    1. Set the 2-way HDMI switch (the product I'm looking for) that is connected to the Xbox to route to the Living Room TV
    2. Turn on the Living Room TV
    3. Turn on the Xbox

Any products you guys can recommend would be greatly appreciated as I embark on this quest!

Smart Thermostat Mesh with 500+ Devices

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 11:05 AM PDT

Hi guys, hope this is the right place to ask my question:

I'm a IT Technician working in a big Multi-floor Office Space, for heating the Building is equiped with traditional radiator heaters + analog thermostats. Controlling and adjusting these thermostats is very time consuming because of the sheer amount of units (500+ radiators) and Users tend to forget turning them off (at least that's what the Department in Charge told me). Sounds for me like a perfect use-case for smart thermostats but I struggle with the size of the "network". Most commercial Units I found either don't support multiple Gateways or just a few Units per Gateway. I have seen some Zigbee and Z-Wave Devices but I can't get any Information on how many devices such a mesh would support and how reliable these are for "professional" use. Maybe you can point me in the correct direction, which devices/protocols I should take a closer look on. Or maybe I'm thinking this all wrong.

    Thank you very much!

Which Robot Vacuum should I purchase?

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 10:03 AM PDT

Im not too bent on money, i want a vacuum that will handle pet hair on a thick carpet and also the ability to clean itself (the brush) for minimal maintenance (emptying the bin).

So far the only vacuum ive seen is the Powerbot R7070 that has the capability for self cleaning. A close second vacuum is the Roborock S6 but does not self clean (or at least what ive seen from it).

Any other vacuums worth looking into? What are your experiences with robo vacs so far?

    GarageIO

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 07:11 AM PDT

So I have a three-door GarageIO setup, for those who don't know what it is, it allows me to control my garage doors as smart home devices.

Had to replace my first door because my Genie opener broke, so i went with a Chamberlin MYQ, works great, no complaints, but it got me thinking i should have one platform for the garage, bought a hub, and extra door sensor so now all doors run MYQ.

Now I have a garageio setup that I need to get rid of, anyone interested in buying one?

Considering a Brilliant Switch; worth it?

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 06:26 AM PDT

The one we'd get is the 2switch control, so... $350. Not cheap. But the functionality looks nice.

We have Alexa-Echos/Dots in 5 rooms. Ring Pro doorbell. Ecobee thermostat, and about 4-5 smart light switches or bulbs. Also use a Smartthings Hub.

Is that enough to make the Brilliant Switch worth it?

Just found a funny post on r/popular about parental controls from a teenager

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 04:25 AM PDT

I saw this post last night and was only reading a few comments but I found the content very much interesting as it gives a great insight into Home Automation and Home Control from the perspective of a teenager to us sys admins.

    https://reddit.com/r/teenagers/comments/irt40z/bro_my_parents_put_parental_controls_on_my_lights/

My daughter is only 2 now but I think there is quite some valuable information in there for us to learn from on how to implement technology in a way to protect kids but at the same time it shows that locking down phones doesn't help as they will always find a way around it. The only way to really help is to educate them as good as possible is my take on it?
