Basic Electrical Question about Solid State Ceiling Fan Control Posted: 15 Sep 2020 05:30 PM PDT Question: If I don't wire in the included solid state speed control, can I use any fan controller for direct wired fans? Scenario: My wife bought two of these Minka ceiling fans. They are direct wire to these solid state wall controls. Naturally, there is no lighting, pull chain speed control, or RF remote. I'm installing them in an 18' ceiling where the previous owner just cut into an existing lighting run, and used pull chains to operate his fans. I've switched the lights in that run to Philips Hue, so no need to every turn the power off. I need to forego the wall control, and wire a fan controller in at the canopy. Either simple RF, or RF + Zigbee/Zwave. I have an over-confident homeowner's grasp of residential wiring, but a really basic understanding of capacitors and electric motors. It seems solid state controls like this wall control use capacitors (or sometimes TRIAC); pull chains and RF modules also use capacitors - switching between 2 caps to obtain 3 speeds. Reading this great comment by MyOther_UN_is_Clever, it appears I could run into problems if my controller's capacitors aren't "synced" to the electric motor in my fan. If my hunch is correct - that absent the solid state wall control, any fan controller will work, is there anything I can check to ensure that it will work correctly - no hum, no heat? This guy, jrm523, solved my exact problem (with a smaller version of my fan) by removing the caps from the wall switch and soldering them directly into a sonoff ifan03. Wondering if that means I could replicate this with any fan control module - all i really want is a zigbee capable RF controller. [link] [comments]

Replacement for Linear FS20Z-1 relay modules? Posted: 15 Sep 2020 12:23 PM PDT I've had a few FS20Z-1 relay modules for years and they keep having problems. Most recently I've got one that's gone haywire and keeps causing my Z-Stick controller to reset and miss timers. Also, exclusion/inclusion is an incredible pain in the neck, which comes up more than it should as I've had to reset these things several times due to the recurring issues. So I'm looking for a good replacement module that can do either dry contact or simple switching. In all three locations I've got lots of room for wiring & mounting, so size is not a major concern. Cost is also a secondary concern to reliability. I'd also prefer something that can be powered by line voltage, not DC. Although since space and cost are non-issues I suppose I could wire up a DC power supply if that's necessary for the most reliable option. Right now the most promising option seems to be the Qubino Flush 1D. Has anyone in the US used this? Can it work without a toggle switch attached? It looks like there's a service button for inclusion/exclusion but the manual says something about that button being used when connected to CD power, which I'm not planning to do. Thanks in advance for your advice and recommendations. [link] [comments]
44' of LEDs Outdoors - Power Supply Heat a Concern? Posted: 15 Sep 2020 06:42 PM PDT I am looking to put 44' of LED's around the roof of an outdoor pergola. The LEDs are waterproof (IP65) and the power supply is here. I was thinking that the power supply will need to be in a project box of some sort (am i right here?) to keep moisture and humidity away. Since i need so many LED's i am concerned that the power supply will put off too much heat to be contained. What are your thoughts on this? Will this be an issue? Will i need a weatherproof project box? What size should i go with? The power supply will be under a covered pergola but in the Atlanta summers it can get fairly hot. [link] [comments]
Hubitat + Google setup, is it even worth it? Posted: 15 Sep 2020 02:23 PM PDT From all the research I have done in the past week or so, I think I have decided on a decent setup, though I am honestly disappointed in the agonizingly slow progress that home automation has been making in the past few years. I am going to look into building a home automation setup using Hubitat with mostly Z-Wave devices and Google Home Minis (or whatever they are called now) for my voice assistant. I already have 4 GHMs and I like what they do and I'm fine with the sound quality for how seldom we listen to music. There is so much I like about this set up but I am worried that it might become deprecated in the next few years. I'm sure many of you have seen Paul Hibbert's recent video on how Google is lagging miles behind Alexa, and I share his concern. Is it reasonable to try to stick to my guns and use Google and Hubitat or will I really just been boxing myself in with the capability by doing so? I know full well the answer is yes AND no, so be sure to back up your claim with sensible evidence. [link] [comments]
Is there a motion sensor that has close to no rest period? Posted: 15 Sep 2020 10:30 AM PDT My Xiaomi motion sensors have a ~15sec rest period after they get activated where they won't recognize another movement which makes some automations where you want that precise tracking prone to errors in some situations Do you know better alternatives? Hope it's not just something DIY with a raspberry pi n stuff :l [link] [comments]

Can you guys help me understand how to use smart plugs? Posted: 15 Sep 2020 12:36 PM PDT This makes me feel so dumb because I just don't get it. I read all these things online, and I see posts here about automating this or that with a smart plug. So what I understand, is that the smart plug will stop or start the flow of power to whatever is plugged into it, as if you were plugging or unplugging it from the wall. But here's the thing. My coffee maker doesn't start making coffee when I plug it in, I have to push the start button. My dryer doesn't come on when I plug it in. I have to press power and pick a cycle. My tv doesn't turn on when I plug it in, I need to press power. My rice cooker doesn't cook rice when you plug it in, I need to push the start button. These are all examples of things I've read online as "great" candidates for automating with smart plugs. As far as I can tell, the only things that make sense are something like a lamp. What am I missing? [link] [comments]

Is there an easy way to turn on an existing propane firepit with an app? Posted: 15 Sep 2020 07:14 AM PDT I wanted a way to turn on/off my propane firepit from my phone while I was sitting out in the backyard. I ended up going with a (pretty expensive) HPC Bluetooth propane firepit insert. Long story short, it's a total piece of trash. I can't even get a steady connection when I hold my phone 6" away from the bluetooth antenna...so I'm taking it out and installing a regular propane fire ring. Is there any electronic igniter I can install with it that allows me to simply turn on the igniter from my phone? [link] [comments]

New House - Smart home infrastructure Posted: 15 Sep 2020 06:56 AM PDT Hello, Currently my new twin house is being built and after 8 weeks, i should be deciding the electricity stuff So any advice on what things to add now, i am not asking about specific devices, i am asking about things that i should consider now in the infrastructure so that later it will be easy for me to add smart devices. First things i thought about is POE Ethernet network and Ethernet outlets at relevant places. Secondly since i want to get a dimmable lights everywhere so i though to add smart switches that are compatible with Philips hue. Thirdly door locks and doorbell. any other things to consider now since the house is still under construction ? that will make it easier for me later I have a garage, basement and garden. Shelly Dimmer Physical Control Posted: 15 Sep 2020 02:05 PM PDT I'm going to be getting the Shelly Dimmer for a number of lights, but I want dimmer control without an app. Has anyone found a mountable control like a rotary knob that could be used to control the Shelly dimmer through home assistant or something similar? Posted: 15 Sep 2020 11:54 AM PDT I am hoping someone where might have an idea on some good room or zone senors for temperature. Something like this unit here is would be ideal however this one is BT and vendor specific. I use smart life to run a handful of switches and would like to stay with compatible stuff. https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07R586J37/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_i2qyFb8CNT1EF [link] [comments]
Need your input on my new house setup! (Mainly speakers) Posted: 15 Sep 2020 07:53 AM PDT Building a new house and set to move in at the end of next month. I've accumulated my smart devices throughout the years but I'll list them in a sec. My main goal to have a good home speaker set up. This will be mainly for when we entertain and less about building out a home theater. I do have a good Yamaha receiver with a couple of good regular speakers and a great sub. (I'd have to run speaker wire to set it all up in the new house though) I've used this in the past to hook up to my tv but I don't know if I have the strength anymore to run speaker wire in yet another house. Obviously this would be the best option for superior sound. I may just do a soundbar for the tv and be done with it. I've been leaning towards getting a bunch of Echo dots and going that route. I'd love for it all to integrate with all my other smart devices so if there's another route (maybe Google Home) etc let me know what you think.
Priority 1 - To be able to just open up my phone, pick my tunes, and have it play in whatever zone I want. Priority 2 - Because we use the Arlo baby cam, my thought was to get 1 maybe two Amazon Show's and use them as a live baby monitor. Priority 3 - This may be old school but would there be a way to utilize any of this to create a whole home intercom system through the Dots? We'll have a 2 story house and I remember my rich friends always having an intercom lol. Priority 4 - Given the speaker quality with the Dots, is it worth it to try to sync them up with my TV? Would I need to use my receiver or utilize some sort've software for this kind of thing? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Wired, interconnected smoke detectors that tell you which one is going off? Posted: 15 Sep 2020 07:29 AM PDT We've been getting some nuisance alarms from our wired, interconnected smoke detectors. It's really fun hearing "FIRE. FIRE." all through the house and not knowing which one started it. Are there any commercial-grade wired, interconnected smoke detectors that will let me know which one went off first? I've done a bit of searching but came up dry - I might be using the wrong search terms. I don't see anything on the Kidde website that obviously fits the bill. [link] [comments]
Buying an HDMI audio extractor, will it add delay to video/audio and/or input lag? Posted: 15 Sep 2020 09:01 AM PDT I think the title is simple enough, I need to separate a few HDMI sources to connect to my monitor (single HDMI IN) and I have to use a HDMI separator with audio extraction option since one of the devices needs that too. Will it add delay to the video and audio or input lag? This is the device I'm talking about. The seller told me there is no lag with it. No added latency. Can I trust him? I think it's monitors related but if it's a wrong sub, please tell me where I should go with this question. [link] [comments]
