Shelly dimmer 2 - Last spotlight slightly lit when off

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 03:15 PM PDT

In our new home we have 4 spotlights, which I wanted to connect to a smart dimmer. I did some research and settled for the Shelly Smart Dimmer 2.

I wired the Shelly to a 2-gang push button (momentary), connected 4 dimmable spotlights (LED, 5W max each) in parallel and wired the rest of the Shelly and the switch (without neutral). Basically like so (see connection diagram), except it has multiple parallel wired LED Spots instead of 1 bulb.

Everything works fine (after calibration), using the two buttons I can dim and brighten the lights, and turn them on or off. When connected to its IP address, I can control the lights from the internal webpage as well. All four lights turn on, off and dim as I would expect them to do.

However, one thing I did notice is that when I turn the lights off (either using the switch or the internal webpage), after turning off completely, the last light in the parallel chain (the one 'furthest' away from the Shelly) turns back on after a few seconds at a very dim setting, barely visible. But only the last one, all the other ones are completely off.

The Shelly documentation does mention a minimum load of 10W when not using neutral, but I would argue I have 4x 5W = 20W load connected, and my assumption is that this is only important for the dimming itself to work correctly? I don't believe it has anything to do with faulty wiring, because that would probably result in the lights, the switch or the Shelly not working at all, while everything seems to work perfectly fine except for this strange issue. Thanks!

Turning my lights on from my watch - My first TIZEN app

Turning my lights on from my watch - My first TIZEN app

I looked all over if there was an app to control my Homeseer/Zwave lights from my fancy Galaxy Watch 3 and didn't find anything.

What I DID find was the SDK for writing apps for Samsung watches, so as a weekend project I decided to give it a try.

After some videos and trial and error, and after a lot of wiggling around with their ecosystem (packages, certificates, etc) I'm happy to report that I have a crude working version running on my watch. It provides a scrollable list of devices, and ON-OFF buttons for each which fire calls to the Homeseer API.

    https://preview.redd.it/e612otfyytm51.jpg?width=400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=16257f86384e9988fa2863fb3e262290de053a10

    https://preview.redd.it/n0i2ytfyytm51.jpg?width=400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0e7dba6d5db7a1fb5f006254802c8c45f13d4aa2

    https://preview.redd.it/t0hfasfyytm51.jpg?width=400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5c0dccf9c24c0c1760b5950d14ab00222d4c552f

Once getting to know the libraries provided by Samsung, the files for this app should be pretty simple for someone familiar with html and js (I could post them if there is interest). I spent most of the time installing and getting to know the platform and all its tools, which includes an emulator.

As I am not a software developer registered with Samsung, this app will never appear on their store (I wouldn't know how to do that). AFAIK the only way for someone to run something similar would be to install the whole development kit and from there pass the app to their own watch.

At the moment the list of devices is hardcoded inside one of the app files, so adding a new device implies redeploying and reuploading.
Possible upgrades include: having the list of devices on a local server which the app would read at startup; having the list of devices online on a google sheet read at startup; or maybe having the devices on a google sheet, and add a function to the app to read it and store locally on demand. Any of these would need a way to enter the server/file info of the google sheet id. The main hurdle for making this installable by other people seems to be entering the initial data into the watch app.

I'm sure I'll think of 20 more upgrades in no time, but for now I'm pleased with the current results.

LED Strip compatible w/ST and PIR sensor?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 08:10 PM PDT

I'd like to install some ST-controlled and motion-activated LED strips under my bed. I've already got a bunch of lighting tied into ST, so I'd like to stick with that ILO going with Hue.

Can anyone make some recommendations for everything I need to get this set up? Strips, power supply, sensors, etc.

I want them to come on in the evening based on a schedule (which I know how to do in ST) and then switch over to motion activated during the night.

    Thanks,

    Zigbee and BLE advertisement interference

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 10:34 PM PDT

    Zigbee and BLE advertisement interference

I'm looking at some BLE sensors that advertise temperature/humidity every 2 seconds and wondering if they would interfere with Zigbee. Assuming they're advertising on BLE channel 37, it would be close to Zigbee channel 11.

    Zigbee Channel 11 (2405MHz, 5MHz channel width)

    BLE Channel 37 (2402MHz, 1MHz channel width)

I don't know how clean BLE channels and Zigbee channels are. Would this adjacency be too close? BLE advertisements are super short, so that helps, but maybe not enough if you have several devices advertising at 2 second intervals.

Speakers in every room of the house that turn on as you walk in and play what your computer is playing.

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 08:54 AM PDT

    Hi, guys,

I was wondering if you could help me with starting a project I want to do: I want to have speakers in every room of my house that only turn on when I enter, perhaps with motion sensors, and just play whatever my computer is currently playing, be it music, YouTube video or some movie or whatever.

I'm thinking perhaps WiFi speakers with embedded motion sensors that I've seen being sold but I have no idea how to sync them with my computer's audio stream?

Any recommendations for individually controlled RGB shelf lighting?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 05:37 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

So I have an IKEA KALLAX shelf unit, that I want to be able to light each shelf independently with different colors.

But the problem is that I don't want to have 8 different controllers plugged into the wall. So my ideas was to wire it so each cubby has a short strip of LEDs, and then using addressable LED control, control the color of each cubby. I'd be using LED extension cables.

But I'm not sure if this is possible or not, or if there are any better ideas.

Alternatively, if I could achieve the same thing with a "hub" where I could connect 8 different LED lights to and control it via WiFi.

Any recommendations or better ideas? Thanks!

    Self-cleaning litter box?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 08:46 PM PDT

I'm looking for a self-cleaning litterbox. I'd like something that scrapes the litter every time my cat uses the box and that alerts me on my phone when the litter box needs attention.

I've looked on the internet but nothing jumps out, hoping for a good recommendation.

Edit: just for one cat. I only have 1 cat.

Hello I have had Home Assistant and Openhab in the past hut gave only used them with limited experience. I made more progress with Home Assistant in the several months I used it. If you had the option with intention of attempting to try and improve one and expand on open source projects which would you choose and why? I think Home Assistant is python but not sure about Openhab.

    I don't have a neutral here do I?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 10:18 PM PDT

    I don't have a neutral here do I?

Want to replace another 3-way on the light switch with for the stairs to my basement with a smart switch, however looking at both boxes the box as the top of the stairs only has 1 wire bundle running into it, and the box at the bottom has 2 wire bundles, and I normally expect 4 bundles for a 3-way switch. Fortunately the basement is unfinished so I am able to trace the wires down there easily and I noticed that there are 2 bundles hitting the light fixture with the bulb on it, so I'm guessing that's my missing bundle from the breaker. I assuming those white wires are actual the "line" running from the light fixture itself and that the line to the breaker box is that top left bundle hitting the light fixture. This would make the red/black on the far right bundle my travelers, the white wire my line, and the black wire from the light fixture to the bottom switch the line from my breaker box, which means I don't actually have a neutral in the box that would allow me to hook up my smart switch.

Is my analysis correct that I do not have a neutral in that box to attach a smart switch? I think it is, but every other switch I've replaced(not in my basement) has had a neutral wire so I'm hoping I'm wrong about this but I can't figure out any other explanation for why there aren't 3 wire bundles running into the basement box.

Which robot vacuum can I tell to clean a specific room without using the app? Via home assistant or Google Assistant?

Digital picture frame for a technology illiterate, non-smart phone carrying, grandmother that lives on the other side of the country.

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 03:57 AM PDT

I have been trying to research a digtal picture frame for my grandmother (94 years old).

She lives in an assisted living, but all the COVID limitations for visiting and social meetings are making her really depressed. She has a rather large family that lives in multiple states and countries that I would love to find a frame everyone can upload too so she can view the pictures through out the day.

    I really want one that:

    • requires little to no user input after set up

    • can be uploaded remotely by multiple people over multiple platforms

    • can be labeled with at least who uploaded the picture but would also love the ability to put a description of what is in the picture

    • can be sorted by my grandmother and/or controlled remotely

I have done some research, and it looks like the Google nest and the nixplay are great options.

Does anyone have experience with these two or any others?

Seems like the Google nest would be a great option to allow video chats also, but seems like you really need to be on the same wifi network to really be able to control it.

Any suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for your time!

    Housewide doorbell with audio/trigger lights?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 11:52 AM PDT

I've been trying to think of the best way to set this up. I've got Home Assistant set up. I'd like some kind of button doorbell, but maybe close proximity motion would be good (package drop). Traditional wired doorbell with transformer is not available, so would need to be battery powered. I'd like it to play something to speakers all through the house, so that if in the garage, backyard, bedroom, etc, you would hear it. Preferably a short audio recording. Would be great if it could be cast to TVs or Roku, as that would save on some dedicated speakers. I'd imagine I could do something to flash lights as well, as it would help with attention for a family member. I appreciate any ideas.

I'm a Controls Engineer by trade who recently completed the Core Certification test. While working on it, I found out there is a free maker's edition of the software. Just wanted to see if anyone here uses it, or if there is a specific feature missing that turns people away (Like it not being open source, for example.)

RV, Cat Litter Box, Motion Sensor, Fan Setup

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 11:56 AM PDT

My goal is to set up a litter box against the wall of my RV, connect the litter box to the wall with a 2" or 3" duct, mount a small pc fan in the wall, setup a motion sensor in the litter box to trigger the fan and maybe a controller to adjust the length of time the fan stays on.

Any recommendations for brands/components that could work in this scenario? Any advice would also be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Smart Switch options for 3-ways where common hot is in a different box from the load

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 10:49 AM PDT

I've pulled three of my boxes apart at this point, and it seems that my house was wired such that the load wire to the lights of any 3-way is always in a different box from the common hot from the circuit breaker. Apparently this is a common design in the US? Anywho - I'm trying to upgrade to smart switches for the majority of my lights, and it seems like most options either require a neutral in the same box as the load wire, or a hot in the same box as a load wire; neither of which I have available.

Example of my boxes (2 switches in 3-way config):

    1. Switch One has common hot, ground, traveler A, and traveler B attached.
    2. Switch Two has load wire, ground, traveler B, and traveler A attached.

I haven't found a solution that works well in this configuration. I do have a hot and a neutral from a different circuit available in the box for Switch Two, but this seems like a really bad idea to try, since I'd be mixing circuits. What are my options? What will work with this, either an actual replacement switch or in-line option (I have Shellys for my single-switches).

Is there a particular device for that? If I have to build from an arduino or raspberry do you now a mixing valve and a flow limiting valve that can be control by a pc? Thank you very much.

How to shortcut an Alexa compatible app into Google Home?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 10:31 PM PDT

I just recently started to automate my home and have found out my Goldair 2300W Convection Heater has wifi compatibility and can be used alongside Amazon Alexa. I've got a Google Nest Hub that I've set up with my appliances but can't work out how to make Google Assistant recognize the heater and operate it with the hub. I'd rather find a preexisting "mimic" app, or pointed in the right direction how to make an applet to detect the wifi heater via Google Hub without needing a bunch of components - I'd just sell this heater and buy a compatible one otherwise. Thanks in advance!

TL;DR: I have a wifi heater thats compatible with Amazon Alexa but not Google Assistant - Trying to find a workaround to use it with Google Assistant that doesn't cost me buying a bunch of components.

What do people with pets use for occupancy sensing?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 04:01 AM PDT

I'm planning my deployment of some hardware, and I'm finding that a lot of the automations I'd like to set up require me to track room occupancy. I have preschoolers in the house that I want to track as occupants, and two medium (golden retriever-size) dogs that I don't want to register.

The best solution I've found so far involves thermal sensors and training ML models. Which, while that sounds totally awesome and like something I'd like to try, I can't imagine that's the go-to solution for what has to be a common problem.

    Any suggestions? Cheers!

edit: Some good ideas in here, thanks everybody. Basically confirms my impression that there's no prevalent turnkey solution to this, but it can be done with some elbow grease. At least that's how I'll justify all that time in the basement to the wife...

Door sensor for beginner home automator

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 08:39 AM PDT

TLDR: Which would be a recommended door/window sensor for someone just starting build my eventual empire of home automation gadgets?

I have recently been in the market for a door sensor and my research has my head spinning. I have a couple Google home minis and just bought a set of LG smart washer and dryer, but I want to eventually have an extensive home automation setup. I also like the idea of locally hosted solutions such as Hubitat, but that is the end goal and doesn't have to be my solution for now. I'm have a degree in computer science, so I would say I am more capable to understand the ins-and-outs better than most, but I do enough programming at work so i don't care for solutions like Home Assistant where I have to program at home too.

I am leaning toward getting something that uses zigbee or zwave technology like the Sengled door sensor but I would also have to get the hub for it too. I could also be persuaded to get a Wi-Fi based door sensor if it requires no hub and would integrate well into a Hubitat or other similar system. I just want something that will just for for the time being, but will ideally also integrate into full home automation setup in the future.
