These struck me as a pretty competent execution to easily add smart curtains to most "analog" home curtain setups. What do you guys think? Go Smart Curtains

Multi-Room Audio Smart Speakers on a Budget?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 08:25 PM PDT

I'm looking for multi-room audio and found the Echo Studio for $149 and the full-size Echo 3 (https://www.kohls.com/product/prd-3979967/amazon-echo-3rd-gen-smart-speaker-with-alexa.jsp) for $59 on sale. Should I buy 1 Studio or 2 Echo 3's for each room, or something else?

How to control RF Projector Lift over IR (or 12v trigger)?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 06:51 PM PDT

I just purchased this projector lift and it uses RF for the remote. I'd love to figure out how to get it to work with a universal remote (I haven't purchased the remote yet, so open to options).

After googling around, my understanding is that there are no remotes that will handle this out of the box, so I'll have to get creative. I don't mind tinkering around, and would prefer to do it now before we mount the lift (which we'll have to do soon).

The RF box on the projector has this info on the side (not sure if it's helpful). Ideally I'd love to find a solution that could trigger off the projector (which will be in the unit) so that I don't even need to bother with the remote, but I'm totally open to options, I just don't really know where to start.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Best options for discontinuous under cabinet lighting?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 11:39 AM PDT

I'd like to get smart LEDs under the cabinets but the main hurdle is that we have 4 separate sets of cabinets since the stove and sink divide one section and then there is another set of cabinets on the other wall. I'm looking at Wifi Govee LED strips but wondering if the best option is to just get 4 and have them all separate or if there is a way to link them.

I have a bunch of Shelly relays and have considered their RGBW2 but not sure how I would use this to run the different strips. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Want to make an App to control a power switch. Need Help!

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 03:54 PM PDT

Hi! I could use some help finding a smart power switch with an open API , so that I can make an app to control the switch. Would really prefer it to be 4 outlets max and 3 outlets minimum. I am open to using a smart wifi relay too.

    Any suggestions? Thanks!

Any suggestions on what to put on a wedding registry?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 10:00 PM PDT

The extent of my home (apartment) automation is some smart plugs, a few hue lights, a robot vacuum, and a couple nest minis. Any suggestions on what essentials I could add to my wedding registry?

Owning a home isn't happening anytime soon, but I can't wait to that I can replace all lights witches with smart devices. Alas, I don't want to lose my security deposit.

    Air Quality Monitor advice

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 02:02 PM PDT

Hi there, I'm in the middle of fire season in California and was wondering what your recommendations are for the most accurate and comprehensive indoor air quality monitors I can buy for $200 or less.

I've heard a lot about the Awair 2nd edition but I'm not completely sold on it yet after seeing some Amazon reviews about it saying some readings are pretty inaccurate (which I understand no monitor in this price range is 100% accurate). Just need something appropriate for the small ~120sq ft room that I rent in a house. Also, what indoor air pollutants should such a device track in general? Already figured PM2.5 and VOCs are pretty essential. Should I aim to have PM1/10 and CO2 as well? Thanks!

August Pro Smart Lock on Schlage Mortise Door Lock

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 01:15 PM PDT

Hey Guys, I own a condo unit and is interested in putting a August Smart lock on my door because I want the smart door capabilities. Now I've done some research and there is a lot of people saying it can't be done on Mortise locks unless you get something like Keymitt or Sesame lock. But this guy seems to have pulled it off.

He had a convo with another guy u/corpsec and it seems like they manually took off the interior door panel completely and just filed down a piece of metal to turn the tumbler. Now I don't know much about locks but they also talked about some kinda Tension ring he had to remove, not sure what that is in the picture, maybe someone here can help?

Does anyone have experience designing IOT devices that interface with utilities that meet American standards? ie NEC, UL...etc.

    Wemo Switch style device alternatives?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 10:53 AM PDT

I have fairly extensive home automation system that I've built mostly from scratch. It runs on a raspberry pi, lighting/thermostat/device control is managed by a python daemon, while door/window/etc sensors are read in and monitored by a separate daemon written in C and taking input from multiplexers on the gpio pins. The python daemon is designed to integrate with some purchased devices, like wemo switches, my thermostat, or weather station. I've gone through many brands/types of home automation IoT devices in the past, specifically looking for ones that did not require user accounts, cloud services, or an internet connection to function. Up until recently it was possible for me to do this with wemo devices -- I could set them up once on my phone, then manage them entirely locally via IP without them ever needing to touch the internet. This is no longer the case, and after speaking with wemo support, it looks like I now have to look elsewhere for this functionality.

This is one of my primary hobbies, and I really enjoy designing and building everything myself to a realistic extent. I'm confident I could make such a device myself if I have to, but I'd rather be able to buy the functioning wifi switch and connect it to my stuff without it needed to be managed via the internet.

    So, my requirements are:

Small, single outlet 'plug in' style wifi switch -- locally setup and managed, no user accounts or internet based services required. I don't really even care if the device requires authentication -- simply being able to http post to an ip and toggle it is fine (or just a raw socket server for that matter, I don't really care as long as it's local), all these devices are on a heavily restricted vlan and do not have access to the internet.

I can find many devices like this which are intended to be installed in walls, or permanently connected to devices, however I have not been able to find the plug-in style without each brand I've tried requiring their own account/process/cloud-based control utility.

Does this still exist? Or at this point should I start ordering wifi modules, relays, and working on 3D printing an enclosure?

New Construction Caseta or Radio RA2?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 02:06 PM PDT

I have a new construction with the electrical almost complete and I need to make a decision on smart lighting. The house has Cooper Halo ML4 recessed lighting throughout and is a modern custom 2400 square foot build. What I'm having trouble deciding is whether I should go with Caseta or Radio RA2. I've priced Radio RA 2 to be about $5000 more than Caseta, is it worth the premium price for a home of this size? Reliability, adding to home value, integration with other smart products and something that is future proof are all things I'm looking for in a lighting system.

    New Home Build Suggestions

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 03:06 AM PDT

I am at foundation stage of new home. Main floor and unfinished basement will each be about 1800 sq ft. One side of house will have two bedrooms with bath. Main living area will be open "great room" kitchen and dining area - no formal dining area. Then on opposite side of main living area will be master bedroom. There is three car garage.

I want to somewhat future-proof the home in terms of connectivity. I want to ensure at least couple of ethernet ports in each bedroom on opposite walls and appropriate connections for a/v equipment. I have no huge desire for home audio wired all over but if it is reasonable to do at build stage I am not opposed. This is new development that will have fiber at just under 1 Gbps connection. I despise cable/satellite more and more but know I should be wired for it. Myself I would probably do like Hulu/Youtube/ATT live streaming and then the top apps/roku/fire sticks. One bedroom would be devoted to a working area when live video conferences would take place. For now at current location this is just done with Logitech camera and desktop computer. I may also want to be able to be wired for security system/video recording. Will also likely have people coming to the home when unattended (housekeeping, lawn care, etc...) so would want to have internal recording as well.

What would be good things to pass along to builder and his subs to ensure adequate preparation so not have to rely on wifi and cables all over the place?

I have heard of things going into Cat 7 wiring - some suggesting two lines to each outlet. Some suggesting 4 to main tv area of great room. Is coax still needed or recommended? I have basic understanding of PoE - is this something I want? Do I have a central hub like in pantry/garage/mud room and have things go from there?

Are there services where I can pay someone a fee to give appropriate recommendations of what to do?

Thanks in advance for the insight and suggestions.

Question about Smart home brand choice

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 05:36 AM PDT

Hey guys, new to the sub. I am in the process of purchasing my first home! I plan to immediately go hard with smart home tech. I am kinda new to the smart home scene. but in my research, i see that the main players when it comes to come integration is Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa. Ideally i would like to have one of the minis in every room (either echo dot or Google mini), as well as one of the smart displays in the bedroom and kitchen. I do also plan to get Hue smart lights/switches, a robovac, smart thermometer, and doorbell/security cameras. My question to this community is, in your experience, which brand should i go with, Google vs Alexa? Or should i get a mix of both?

(Please don't hate on each other for picking one over the other.)

    Looking to finally expand system

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 10:39 AM PDT

So I am back wanting to fully automate my home, and I am looking for some guidance on how to go forward. Currently I have the following:

Insteon Hub with a few Insteon switches, 3 Insteon cameras, one water leak detector for sump pump. and and ISY994i/ir.

Also have 3 Legrand WiFi dimmer switches.

    Nest thermostat for heat/AC.

I am not totally married to the Insteon/ISY so if there is something better I am open to thoughts. The isy is really under used and have not put much effort in that, seems very flexible but I did not love the interface.

Home is a center stair colonial, 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath, full basement if that matters.
