What is your most elaborate automation?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 05:16 PM PDT

I have Tasker set to put my phone on DND and trigger a simulated SmartThings switch (1) during my scheduled online classes. I then also have an Alexa automation which is triggered by someone asking if I'm busy, which flips a different simulated switch (2). Then, if both switches are flipped, simulated switch (3) also gets flipped. If only (2) is flipped, then switch (4) then instead gets flipped. Depending on whether switch (3) or (4) is flipped, Alexa then responds with "yes" or "maybe".

Unfortunately, I was only able to figure out how to make Alexa respond from one predetermined echo, rather than any random one spoken to. If Amazon would only give us AND statements, I could get rid of switches (3) and (4) and make it speak out of any echo. If they would give us OR statements, I could also get rid of one of the routines.

This is overwhelmingly my most elaborate and convoluted automation. Now your turn.

Proposed buildout for our new (old) home. Looking for feedback!

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 08:17 PM PDT

    Hi all,

We've purchased a 3 storey house, and are moving in in a couple of weeks. I'm a software developer by trade, in my late 30s. I've done the custom PC thing, the Linux thing, and now I mostly use Macs because they just work. I've wanted to get into this space for years now, but the home we are leaving never warranted the investment.

I don't mind spending time getting this stuff working, but I don't want to spend every waking hour debugging things. I also don't want to get tied into proprietary systems that are orphaned or don't play nicely with each other. It's a delicate balance to be sure. My wife is also not tech savvy, so manual controls and simplicity are a must.

I've poured over all the information I could find on Reddit, YouTube, and elsewhere. It's a bit daunting, but I think I've landed on an approach. Basically start by investing in a good foundation and building out over time. Turn this into a hobby instead of boiling the ocean on day one. I'd really love some feedback, and I look forward to many years together on this subreddit!

    Layout & Construction

The main floor is the primary living space, which is where I'll be looking to do most of the automation. Upstairs we have our bedrooms and home office. Below is a finished basement with a utilities room, which is where I intend to set up a rack. We'll also have our bulkier home entertainment and gaming gear down there. Each floor is around 1300 sqft, wood frame and drywall (typical suburban Vancouver build), built in 1999.

    Devices

We have two iPhones, an iPad, and a 2015 MacBook Pro. We have an underpowered Synology NAS for Plex and backup that needs to be upgraded. We have Chromecasts for our TVs (Netflix, Disney+, YouTube, Plex). Our primary gaming systems are Nintendo Switch and RetroPie (pi3b). I'm working from home for at least another 7 months, so I have my work laptop as well (2019 MacBook Pro).

    Networking

We use wifi for almost everything right now, so I looked at Nest Mesh, but I think UniFi is the way to go. I'll put one UAP-AC-Lite on each floor to start. I plan to buy the USG to replace my TP-Link router, and then add a POE switch later on, once I figure out how many devices I want to power off it.

There are some ethernet runs to the living room, home office and basement, but they all terminate in the garage right now. I plan to reroute them into the basement utilities room (where I'll put my rack), probably using some punch down junction boxes. The upstairs will be ceiling mounted (cabling through the attic), and the other floors are likely to be high up on one of the walls. Any new cable runs I need will be Cat6a for future-proofing.

    Hub

I've settled on Home Assistant running on a Pi 4 with a Aeotec Zwave USB ZStick. I'll host my UniFi controller from the same box (or as an add-on). I might migrate to a Mac Mini or rack PC, but it depends what I decide to do with my NAS.

    Voice Control

We have some Google Homes that we're pretty happy with (the whole family uses it). We'll sprinkle some more minis around the home when they go on sale again.

    Thermostat

We are leaving our 2nd generation Nest behind, so I'm looking at the Nest E. We don't use the learning feature, but I would like to have some remote sensors which rules out the latest, cheapest model. I looked at Ecobee, but we're quite happy with the Nest.

    Smoke Detectors

We have a Nest Protect, which is lovely, but insanely expensive to do an entire house worth. I've looked at the FirstAlert Z-wave model, but read that it doesn't work with an interconnected system (which is pre-existing). I think maybe a Z-wave listener might be a better option, but this is a priority area (most/all of the units need to be replaced) where I need some advice.

    Lights

I looked at Lutron Caseta, but the switch designs are weird. I'm inclined to get Z-wave switches from Innovelli or GE and do most things that way. Smart outlets for lamps. I might also do some RGB bulbs/strips for my kids' rooms and the home bar at some point.

    Security

There is an IQPanel installed in the home to control the security system (through Telus). I don't think there are any other smart home integrations, but I'll investigate further once we've taken possession. I'd like to link in the existing sensors (motion, probably doors and windows?) if I can since everything is already professionally installed.

    Cameras

We have two Wyze Cams that I bought for fun, but are a bit too basic. I intend to upgrade to UniFi cameras at some point, which is maybe a reason to consider beefier UniFi gear at the outset?

    Doors

Maybe in the future, but there's a keypad system which gets the job done for now.

    Blinds

    Again, maybe in the future.

Please let me know your thoughts, or if I've overlooked something. Thanks!

    August Smart Lock HomeKit Issue

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 08:22 PM PDT

I'm having an issue getting my August Wifi Lock connected to HomeKit. I can control my lock through the August app and Amazon Alexa's app, but not HomeKit. I can get notifications, but when I go to unlock or lock, I get a "No Response" from HomeKit. Has anyone encountered this? I have a 4th Gen Apple TV acting as the hub.

    Motorised plantation shutters?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 03:08 PM PDT

Does anyone have any experience with motorised plantation shutters and who I might find that supplies them? I've found 1 type in the UK which appear to be supplied by Norman in the USA. If anyone knows of any others, it would be great to hear. I'm happy to use something like AliExpress if anyone knows any suppliers.

Adding Larger Caps to Sonoff iFan03 - How Large is Too Large? 9uF? (xposted to r/Sonoff)

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 02:43 PM PDT

I have seen several posts on here, on r/Sonoff, and on youtube of Americans switching out the capacitors of their Sonoff products, particularly the iFan with larger caps to correct for our 110/120 voltage.

The iFan03 comes with 2.5uF and 3uF caps, and I've seen posts where people switch out for 5uF caps. I've even seen this redditor use the 4uF and 7uF caps that came with his Minka Roto. Seems like it worked initially at least.

I have the Minka Roto XL, which comes with 7uF and 9uF caps in its solid state wall controller. Would this be too big of a charge? Do I risk frying the low voltage side of the board? The relays? It's a heavier fan, hence the larger capacitors needed to get it going. I wouldn't want to run the motor on weaker caps. But I also don't want to burn my house down.

A frustrated newbie , is it the right path I am thinking? But there is a hope on this sub

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 03:42 AM PDT

    Hey Guys,

I have been wanting to enter into automation world by seeing how the people do the smart things, after some extensive reading I finally decided to move to HA. Have brought pi4 8GB and case, a SSD card all to enter into the new world.

Initially I started with OpenHab, I am always getting list with terms and HomeAssistant always impresses me, so started this.

I have installed HomeAssistant on pi4 with SSD boot - My challenge here is its on Alpine OS, which I never heard of and all the commands are completely different, also the support on it minimal. Hold on a sec, why I am looking into Linux ? because I want to take advantage of automation with some other tools like Pihole, Plex, Graphana, etc, etc..

Having said that, after some reading and some discord chats recommendations I decided to install docker for all tools including HA. So I have decided to get understanding of docker on this weekend, yeah I read it and installed raspberry OS and installed all dockers. Now the challenge is every addon I am trying ( like DuckDNS) throwing error as path not found like that, which make sense then I am adding volumes. But this route is with many hurdles. Me being a newbie not understanding much about docker thinking like this or this is way we need to work.

I am posting on community, asking on reddit and discord, bt I am not able to get a solution. Are these automatons only for the people who has very good knowledge on technology?

can some one share your experiences and guidance on how I can run multiple tools on a single pi (at this moment until I gain confidence on my work I am not willing to but any more hardware)

    your help is really appreciated.

    HA down

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 07:41 PM PDT

I haven't changed anything on my system and my software is all up to date. Yesterday I notice automations would still work but I couldn't access my Lovelace homepage from external duckdns or internal raspberry pi 3 IP address. I turned it off then back on and now nothing works (no automations nor landing page). Just times out. I have turned it off a few times and my raspberry po is connected to Ethernet which has fixed this issue in the past by changing the port that's connected to the router/modem box but nothing has helped. Any advice?

Building second system after first one in 2015. What’s new?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 05:51 PM PDT

I previously built a DIY home automation system in 2015 for a 1300 sq foot house using Caseta. Unbelievably pleased with it. I also tried ZWave, but it was far too temperamental for me to want to continue with.

I am planning my second system for 1700 sq ft (plus yard lighting). I was thinking of using Caseta combined with DMX for select complex scenes (along with some system to tie these together, along with the devices that neither address). What has changed in this space in the past 5 years? Is there any competitor slotted above Caseta, or is RA2 still the only game in town with this price point and robustness.

What is a good system to overlay above Caseta to fill in its gaps? Preferably at a similar budget point (ie <$500 for the license and hub hardware).

Wayne Dalton (Eaton) ZWave to Homelink (300-390Mhz) Bridge on ST?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 02:00 PM PDT

    https://imgur.com/a/adSJVhm

The Wayne Dalton unit (WDHA-12) functions as a bridge between ZWave and garage door openers.

The theory is that a scene can be programmed into one of the three buttons on the unit, and synchronized to a Homelink button in a vehicle, enabling a scene to be triggered via non-Zwave radio frequency.

In Smartthings, the device only shows up as a remote; the buttons do not present themselves. Further complicating Smartthings is Samsung's move to their new development platform, which IIRC, locks out non-commercial developers from tinkering. This is an assumption I have not spent time validating.

My asks - has anyone here been able to reveal the Wayne Dalton WDHA-12 buttons inside of Smartthings? If so how?

I've seen the handful of years old thread on the ST forums however those have led absolutely nowhere, and appear to no longer be applicable with the transition to the new platform.

Alternatively, if there are other solutions available that bridge the "garage door" RF spectrum Homelink is capable of and Smartthings, I'd like to learn about that.

    Thanks!

Smart light switch with motion sensor schedule?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 05:45 PM PDT

I'd like motion sensor to turn on a bathroom light if there's movement, but NOT between the hours of say, 12am-8am. I believe SmartThings has this type of thing, but is there any standalone product that can do this?

Looking for Alexa/Google Assistant compatible recessed downlighting recommendations for Living Room Update

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 11:38 AM PDT

So we are in the process of updating our downstairs and want to add two recessed lights in out living room. There are no existing fixtures.

I am looking for lighting that is dimmable and capable of controlled by a smart assistant. The preference is to avoid having to install cans (otherwise I would look at the Hue Solution), but if people think it's better long term I would be open to it.

Based on some research I honed in on the Halo Brand but I am definitely open to other recommendations. My question is should I buy smart lights and the corresponding light switch and hub or should I get some dumb lights and get a smart dimmer switch. Also how often do people find themselves changing the warmth of their lights?

    Thank you for any help!!

Alexa/Home Assistant controlled RF transmitter (other than Broadlink)

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 05:36 PM PDT

Here's the scenario - my building has remote controlled car entrance that we can open by using a supplied key fob that sends out RF signals, and I'd like to incorporate this thing into my system, so I can open it from my phone while near in a car, or assign zigbee buttons to it and pepper them around the house.

I have boradlink rm pro (not rm4 pro) and I successfully record the keyfob signal so frequency is OK. I think. However, the entrance receiver requires the keyfob to be long-pressed for a bit, and it seems like broadlink doesn't emulate this well, and instead sends out short signals that repeat relatively slowly, when holding down a button in the app.

So, is there another solution to this? Maybe something Pi based?

Can I use Shelly dimmer 2 with a normal on/off switch?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 05:18 PM PDT

    1- Can I install Shelly dimmer 2 behind a normal on/off switch?

2- if so, can someone provide simple (really simple) drawing of how to install? I am in Germany, and I have 3 wires (blue brown yellow) coming out from the wall.

3 - is there a way to install Shelly Dimmer 2 behind the lamp, instead of behind the switch? Is so, how to do it?

I am really sorry if these are dumb questions, but I am confused with the schematics in the manual. I really appreciate the help.

    Control smart plug through http?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 02:26 AM PDT

So I bought a cheaper smart plug on amazon, and even though it said it would be compatable with smart things, I was never able to get it to work. So I'm trying to figure out a.) How to get it to work with smart things, b.) If I can control it using http instead and c.) If I can somehow use a Google assistant api to control it?

The app it's working with is called "cloud Intelegence" and any help is really appreciated.

I can't even find these in Canada. It seems like such a great solution for someone looking for a clean install with some better sound quality than your normal smart speaker. I never see anyone mention them either. I'm not sure they it's not more popular.

Need advices to make Alexa request things to Google Assistant silently

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 01:19 PM PDT

    Hi there.

I have an app that I can control using Google Home (which I have one of) only, but I don't use Google Home because I can do more things with Alexa so I have Echos everywhere in my house. What I would like to achieve is ask something to Alexa that will silently trigger a Google Assistant request.

Anyone managed to do this, or have ideas to do so ?

I already host custom Alexa skills so I'm familiar with skills programming.

If there's no easy way, the minimum I would need is a way to make requests to Google Assistant (with curl for exemple; I already do this for Alexa); but I don't know how Google Assistant work.

How to play "Custom Audio" through Google Home speakers using SmartThings automations

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 12:36 PM PDT

This works by installing cast-web api, WAMP server, and using a simple Webcore piston.

Basically, cast-web api uses the "broadcast" feature of Google speaker devices to play text-to-speech whenever a SmartThings automation is triggered. For example, if a button gets pushed, you could have a Google Mini say "Good morning!"

I decided to take it a step further. I downloaded some free audio files, stored them in a folder on my computer, hosted them locally using WAMPserver, and used Cast-web api to play those .mp3 files on my Google Home speakers.

Since Halloween is coming up, I have a great use case for this. If someone rings my Ring Doorbell, then play creepy witch laughing sounds on a Google Mini (which I've set on my porch). There's tons of other ways you could make use of this setup:

    • If window opens after 11pm, record custom audio to "shout" at intruder.
    • If motion detected, then play "alarm" sound
    • If leak is detected, then verbally announce via Google Home speakers

I'm actually quite surprised that I haven't found a guide online to do this, so I decided to create one for you guys: https://smarthomepursuits.com/play-custom-audio-through-google-home-speakers-using-smartthings-automations/

Hopefully this inspires you to create your own cool ideas!

    Best home automation system?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 05:44 PM PDT

I run a Home Assistant system in my house, and have been a bit oblivious to the home automation world outside of that. I friend of mine wants to put some simple stuff in his place, mostly some lighting stuff (turn on/off lights when entering a room, for example) and I only foresee connecting lights and sensors for triggers right now, though that may expand later. I want to go with something more mainstream because I'm leaving the area soon and wouldn't be able to maintain an HA install for him, and he's not technically proficient.

What's the best system right now? I'm thinking SmartThings, just because I've used a couple of the Samsung devices with HA and I know they're good. Anything better?
