As people are now working from home more, what home office automations do people have?

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 11:22 AM PDT

    Im talking about things like:

-automatic 'on air' lights so house members know when you're on a call -room lighting shifting warmer after sundown -load sensors in desk chairs to log hours/run routines -buttons mounted under desks to trigger alarms and defense strategies -PIR motion sensors to detect lack of consciousness for electroshock administration

    ... Etc.

Dipping my toe into this world. How would you setup a space heater to turn on schedule morning?

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 03:34 PM PDT

    Hello!

I want to start with a small project, a space heater that starts warming my room in the morning an hour prior to me waking up. To be programmable from my phone would be a nice plus, but not required.

    What would you suggest?

Where do you guys store security camera recordings?

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 10:23 AM PDT

I don't really like the idea of cloud storage for recordings, but NAS is the only other thing I can think of. What is the norm for local security camera storage in the home automation community? Do you guys have a separate NAS server for the security camera storage and another NAS server for file storage/media things?

My current "NAS" setup isn't super powerful and only has 8gb of RAM, so I'm not sure if it could even handle a constant feed from a number of different security cameras (including the things running on the server already). I'm just trying to plan for the future.

    Help retrofitting an infared sauna?

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 09:42 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I'm hoping someone here might be able to help make my dumb sauna smart. We love it, but it takes about 30 minutes to get to temperature, and requires us to manually press 2 buttons: Power, and [after a 2 second delay] Work. The link to the sauna is below, and one of the pictures shows the control panel.

My objective is to be able to do this from my home assistant (Google or Siri).

    Any help is appreciated!

Did I miss something about CHIP?

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 02:39 PM PDT

So today I both watched Paul Hibbert video and just had discussion on Facebook and I wonder if I'm missing something. I don't understand this argument about money grab. They say zigbee supposed to be what is created now. From what I understand besides like light version zigbee is more or less standardized and mostly software locked depending on hub. But price is still important factor why cheapest smarthome stuff is wifi. From what I understand chip is like translation protocol that will make it easier for each manufacturer add HomeKit Alexa and Google Home support. But Hardware stays the same? Same wifi Bluetooth etc. So why would it make old hardware obsolete? Zigbee is its own standard and will be still further developed. Bluetooth devices doesn't have any universal hubs anyway. And wifi doesn't need hub at all.

Edit: I have little fever and instead of smart home typed smartphone

Local smartplugs that turn off then back on when I press a button, even when the internet is out

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 12:00 AM PDT

The two plugs would have the modem and router plugged into them, and at the press of a button in my bedroom, it would power cycle the modem and router so that the internet would come back on (recently, the internet for out occasionally for seemingly no reason, and we have to manually power cycle the modem and router to fix it)

    Energy Monitoring Per Circuit?

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 11:12 PM PDT

Does anyone have a good recommendation for a per circuit whole home energy monitor? DIY is totally ok too.

I have a Neurio right now and while it is awesome, I really want more data. I thought they had a per circuit solution too but I'm not finding it for some reason...

    Thanks much in advance!

Help with wonky C by GE 3-wire switches--lights not staying on

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 07:24 PM PDT

I finished installing two of the new C by GE 3-wire toggle wall switches (in a 3-way installation) but have run into a frustrating problem--the lights will switch on, but will not stay lit. The lights stay on for a random amount of time (as little as five seconds to up to a minute), then they turn off for a few seconds, come back on, and repeat the cycle. The switches are wired correctly (I triple checked the wiring and got the blue blinking LEDs when I turned the power back on). The switches control two fixtures, each of which holds three 3.3 watt dimmable candelabra LEDs (for a total load of 19.8 watts). When I turn them to the off position, the lights stay off. Both switches have a strong WiFi signal, but initially gave me a hard time when I tried to connect them to the app and were disconnecting from the app (but not he WiFi network) every 2-3 seconds, then immediately reconnecting. I somehow got around that and now the stay connected to the app. Both are running the latest firmware (I updated it successfully). I'm a relative newcomer to home automation (I've had a number of lights and plugs for about a year) and this is my first wired switch install (I had to wait until switches that didn't require a neutral wire were available). Any ideas on what could be going on and how to fix it?

    Small Zigbee to IR devices?

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 12:57 PM PDT

Are there any commercial zigbee to IR devices that are very small, or has one IR led on the end of a cable like this?

I have an oscillating fan I'd like to automate, but I don't want one of those chunky omnidirectional hubs on my desk, and I certainly don't want to strap one on top of the fans control panel where the IR receiver is. I'd much prefer to have something smaller, so I can attach the device to the fan, but also not cover up the control panel.

I've been looking into making one with a raspberry pi zero, but just the idea of trying to get that to work is giving me an headache.

Looking for a SAD lamp setup that can automatically change color based on the time of day — gradual transition. Any ideas?

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 02:29 AM PDT

    I'm a noob here.

I want something to reinforce my Cicadian Rhythm. Most SAD lamps I've found online are hideous and don't seem functional as regular lamps.

I would like a desk lamp that emits the full spectrum (effective for SAD) but that can also slowly transition between cooler temperatures to warmer ones at night.

    What are my options? Thanks!

    Lutron Maestro Sensor Switch Timeout

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 06:04 AM PDT

Just installed a Lutron Maestro Sensor switch in my bathroom, feels like I'm in the future, does anyone know if you can change the time out for when the switch goes off if it doesn't detect any motion, to be less then a minute? There is a test mode for 15 seconds but I could've sworn you could set the timeout to be less then a minute

Need Help Identifying Wires (I know what's hot)

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 09:21 AM PDT

So I'm trying to replace an old simple dimmer switch with a smart switch. When I pulled my old switch off the wall however, there are 3 wires coming out of the wall and only 2 wires coming out of the switch. Two red wires coming from the wall were twisted together and connected to one switch wire, and a purple wire from the wall was connected to the other switch wire.

Using a multimeter I figured out that one of the red wires is the hot wire. Nothing in here remotely resembles a ground wire. So that means (I think) that either the other red or purple wires are the load. Since the two red wires are twisted together, it doesn't make sense for that to be the load. Meaning the purple should be the load. However, does it make sense for a neutral wire to be twisted together with the hot wire? Or is there no neutral here?

This is a single dimmer switch which controls a single light, so there are no other switches involved in this. Since there are no other switches, nothing in here is a traveler. So what is that second red wire?

    Motion sensor for senior dog?

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 06:54 PM PDT

We have a senior dog who is waking up in the middle of the night. If we don't hear her, she will pee indoors.

I am thinking of getting a motion sensor to place near her bed. If she wakes up and leaves the bed, a notification can be sent to our smartphone.

Some motion sensors advertise that they wont get triggered by a pet. I want the opposite.

I also put my phone on airplane mode or do not disturb when I go to bed. Can a motion sensor still notify me?

Can someone suggest a suitable product? Or is there something else I can try?

    Thanks

Hi. Is there a way to connect using AP mode? I have had to connect all of my other devices to my WiFi with Ap mode (garage door opener, smart switches, smart plugs), but I can't figure out how to connect the TP link smart switches with the Kasa app using AP mode. Any advice is much appreciated.
