    Outdoor smart lighting

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 11:03 PM PDT

We live out in the country & i would like to have several outdoor flood lights that can be put on a Ethernet network so that i can remotely turn on outdoor lighting at night.

I can run both 110 power to each light & Ethernet, i just need to know if this exists....

And if that is t an option for me, maybe a WiFi alternative?

    Anyone have suggestions?

    Need help with Sonoff switches

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 09:45 AM PDT

So my setup is currently based on a few basic switches with no hub or anything, just switches and modem-router. The switches are in different locations of my house and programmed through eWelink app to do some particular tasks.

My main concern about this is that asa the internet connection fails, all of them stops the programming and just stays on. Does these switches have any kind of IC that might be programmable, so it works even w/o internet?

Anyone have the Bali Autoview blinds? (zwave blinds)

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 09:13 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

Thinking about jumping on the Bali Autoview zwave blinds from home depot for the 40% off sale. Anyone have experience with these?

It sounds like I'd get these, get some sort of Zwave hub (leaning towards SmartThings), and then use Homebridge plugin to get it in to Homekit. If anyone has any experience / suggestions I would appreciate it!

    Cozylady led strip experience?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 08:32 AM PDT

I came across this brand (cozylady) online, for a pretty good price ($20 for a 25ft strip). Has anyone had any experience, good or bad, with this brand? Im looking to add some light above built in cabinets, but not ready to spend $100-200+.

    Toilet occupied light/indication

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 03:43 PM PDT

    Hi folks,

New to home automation and was wondering if this concept is possible and what the easiest way to implement this is.

I live in a flat with bedrooms, toilet, bathroom upstairs and kitchen, living room downstairs. I want to create a system where if the toilet is occupied upstairs, there's some sort of signal downstairs (perhaps a desk LED light or LED strip turns on?) to indicate that the toilet is occupied.

From initial research, I could either have a motion sensor in the toilet or some sort of light sensor to check if the toilet light is on (because this indicates someone is inside). And then downstairs I would prefer something like a small desk cube light (if that exists?) that I could put on top of the coffee table.

Could anyone guide me in the right direction as to what equipment/brands and what sensor(s) I would need?

    Thanks!

EDIT: I'm in the UK so I would need to be able to purchase all the equipment here.

I Need help choosing a doorbell security system to use

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 12:03 PM PDT

I live in Florida in a gated community that is nice on the inside but a mile or 2 so down the road it gets a little sketchy. We have had issues with people sneaking into the community pool, trying to get into cars, taking Amazon packages etc.

There's so many options that I have no clue where to start. Quality of the video feed is important to me. Having cell phone alerts as well. Not sure what other features would be necessary to determine what product fits my needs best.

I uploaded a picture of the front of my house and labeled where I think the cameras should go. Would the doorbell be a camera or a smart doorbell? Then above the garage would just be a camera? Are those two spots my best options?

I would rather use a wired connection instead of wifi but I have no clue how I would get an ethernet cable to these spots??? I would assume installation cant be too difficult. So I am looking for some advice and suggestion on what system to use and placement, etc etc

    Homebrew light controllers?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 09:46 PM PDT

Hello, new to the sub and to the home automation scene.

I want to control some security lights from my Android phone, however I dont trust Alexa/Nest etc. with my data.

I suppose I am looking for a light-switch that has an open API, and an open source server that I could run from a RaspberryPi or other server that has an Android app, I also have a Synology NAS if thats useful.

I suspect IFTTT may be part of the solution, Im just not completely clear how to put it together with Android.

Best way to add audio/visual alarm to an event?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 02:01 PM PDT

I have a pretty basic Homeseer setup with some leak detectors and smart switches. On my leak detectors I would like to add some sort of audio or visual clue that there is a leak as I am not always paying attention to the notifications on my phone. Any ideas on the best way to do that? My first thought was to either broadcast a message on my Google Home, or start a video on a Chomecast device but I can't find a good way to do that.

    Any ideas would be appreciated!

    Hikvision - searching for events

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 03:28 PM PDT

I have a 4 camera HIKVision 760NI NVR with a Purple WD drive.

I use the HIK-CONNECT app on my iPhone or Mac to view the cameras.

I don't find them particularly useful in locating events or scanning for movement. I basically have to manually review the video. That process is slow and tedious.

Is there additional software or capability on the apps or NVR , that I am missing or even a better HIKVision camera compatible NVR that is useful in searching for events or intrusions?

Door lock attachment like August lock but only locks, does not unlock

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 03:23 PM PDT

The paranoid part of me does not like that you can unlock a door with an app that could potentially be compromised but with that aside, is there a product out there that only goes in one direction and then reports the status after doing so?

Or is this one of those roll your own situations?

    Thanks

What are my Zwave/Zigbee options for garage door control? Oct 2020 edition

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 12:30 PM PDT

I'm looking for options to automate my garage door locally, but it's really hard to wade through the piles of wifi, cloud-based garbage. My comfort level with customization leaves me somewhere in the neighborhood of Zwave and Zigbee devices that I can write automations for (in Home Assistant, if that matters), no flashing WiFi or soldering up a custom solution.

I would like to hear suggestions and commentary on the currently-available selection of Zwave and Zigbee devices.

Here are the options I am aware of, but have heard some complaining about:

    • GoControl/Linear ZWave opener (have seen people saying there are widespread pairing problems, and others saying they're just incompetent rubes; I don't know who's right)
    • Zooz Z-Wave Plus S2 MultiRelay ZEN16 (Have heard that in order to use it as a momentary for garage doors, a firmware update is necessary but difficult. Still true?)

    Thanks!

Controlling an outlet with a light switch

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 08:10 AM PDT

Hi all, I have a room with an non-working outlet. I think the outlet belonged to a ceiling light/fan that at one point has been removed and patched. I am trying to figure out a way to control a floor lamp using this light switch either by controlling an outlet or controlling a light bulb.

Most of the smart switch or relay solutions that I found assume that the light switch already properly wired to control the light. I searched the subreddit but I couldn't find the information that I am looking for. Maybe I was using the wrong keywords.

Do you guys think this is possible? If so, how? If I put 1 shelly relay behind the switch and a shelly plug into the outlet, would the switch be able to control the outlet?

    Question about intrerrupting/overriding automations

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 12:13 PM PDT

I am trying to gather as much info as possible regarding a future smart home hub and I have some questions.

For now I'm pretty fixed on buying the Fibaro HC3 because I want to design multiple-condition triggers for automations and don't want to rely on a cloud.

For start, I will use HUE lights mostly, and for other dumb lights that need automation I plan to use Fibaro Controllers behind classic switches. I will also use HUE Hub for entertainment (ambilight TVs owned) and HUE dimmer switches (already own Hue). I will use GHome for assistant, and Nest Thermostat for heating (already owned both), electric curtains (z-wave), motion sensors (z-wave - Fibaro or Aeotec), flood sensors (z-wave), door-window sensors, wall-plugs (z-wave) IP-Cam (not sure it's possible "offline" through a hub - research needed)

    So, questions:

    1. If I set up a pee-light in bedroom, based on motion with a 2 minute timer and in those 2 minutes I use HUE dimmer switch to turn on lights at full brightness, will the hub switch the lights off after those 2 minutes overriding my command (assuming I leave the room - no motion detected)? Is it possible to intrerrupt the automation (switching off part) when I interfere with the brightness?

    2. I want to set up the drapes to close automatically if the temp in the room has reached a set point and the illumination (or UV) in the room is high, but if I re-open them after the automation I want them to remain open, not close them again automatically. Maybe a timer from last manual action before triggering the automation again?

    3. Can Fibaro HC3 see the status of the lights through the HUE Hub? I don't want to connect the lights directly to Fibaro because I'm losing entertainment areas.

    4. What other offline (not relying on a cloud) hubs can you recommend that support multiple conditions for automation? I had my eye on Hubitat aswell.

For example when motion is detected AND light sensor is below X lux (i.e. TV off) do the following: if before sunset -1hour THEN open drapes 30%, ELSE turn on lights at 10% brightness. I will most probably install an outdoor brightness sensor for comparison (i.e. on a cloudy day, opening the drapes before sunset has little effect in illuminating the room).

I'm in the research stage of what's best for my ideas before forking out 500+$ for a HC3 and finding out it's limitations. I'll get a 200$ hub instead.

I see that there aren't many owners of Fibaro HC. Too pricey? Compatibility? Bugs? From promos it looks like it can do anything.

    Thanks!

Lower dimming / true 1% dimming?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 11:50 AM PDT

Anyone have a good combo of either dimmers/bulbs that can dim lower that a perceived 60%

I say perceived because the human eye can not distinguish the difference between 1% and 25% dimming.

I get that this is due to led lights and the circuit board/controller in its base. I'm trying to figure out which ones would accomplish this.

Incandescent would accomplish this however I live in an old building with flaky electricity. Incandescent bulbs blow in a short amount of time. I've had most cheap bulbs blow instantly.

Putting together a newbie house warming present for home automation

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 12:56 PM PDT

My brother just bought a house and is showing a bit of interest in HA. He is pretty impressed with my own setup which boasts about 30 devices throughout the house. But I don't think it's something he will get into without some 'help.' So I'm thinking of putting together a house warming present of HA devices that play well together, are easy to set up, and have instant gratification.

I was thinking of an Echo, Hubitat hub, some Philips Hue lights, and a couple Samsung buttons.

With a budget of $300, what would your starter kit look like?

Smart Switch for Ceiling Fan & light in one switch with no neutral

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 07:42 AM PDT

    Hi All,

I currently have the following switch driving my lights and fan in my bedroom:

    https://www.lutron.com/en-US/Products/Pages/StandAloneControls/FanControls/Maestro/Overview.aspx

I wanted to upgrade to a smart switch that would support the fan and lights. However, I have no neutral wire in the gang box. I simply have one wire from the fan and another from the lights. Is there any smart switch out there that would control the fan and light in one switch without a neutral wire?

    Thanks in advance.

    How do Zigbee repeaters work?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 07:37 AM PDT

I've got Ikea TRÅDFRI outlets to act as repeaters for my Xiaomi Aqara temperature sensors.

The temp sensors and TRÅDFRI outlets both use zigbee and directly pair with my Home Assistant hub just fine, when they're in range.

What do I need to do to make the outlet act as a repeater?

Do I need to pair the temp sensors through the outlets for the outlet to repeat messages or will the outlet automatically repeat any zigbee message it hears?

I know that I can pair the temp sensors through the outlets to my hub but do I need to do that for the repeater functionality to work?

Also, is there Zigbee signal meter that I can use to find out how the reception is in a given area?

    Thanks!

"Hiome" people not answering me: real alternatives for fully automatic lights?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 11:41 AM PDT

In another thread someone mentioned the mysterious "Hiome" sensor, made in Chicago. It allegedly accomplishes what I wished existed: it literally counts how many people there are in a room (how many entered and how many exited), so that fully automatic lights work without errors (not turning off after a while if you stay still on the couch). But the problem is: I almost can't find any information online about this sensor, let alone YouTube videos. This alone should be enough to dismiss it; however, for the price, I would be willing to try it with just one sensor + hub, if they shipped to Europe, which they don't seem to do from what I can see on their website. Also, I emailed them (and sent a Reddit private message to the creator) asking them about shipping to Europe and I've had no answer so far.

All this makes me consider what some of you have mentioned to me in other threads: to just use other sensors to achieve this. Cheaper sensors that are more common. So my questions would be: Have you achieved fully automatic lights with no errors? How? Which sensors do you recommend? I've tried looking for this on YouTube, since I don't believe it if I don't see it, but I'm not finding much. BTW, I'm still a newbie without anything smart yet.

    Hub for RF control?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 06:05 PM PDT

    Hi!

I'm looking to automate a motorized blind which uses a dc104 single channel remote on 433mhz and was wondering which hub should I get? Originally I was looking to just get a broadlink rm4 pro but it's quite pricey for controlling one device and was wondering if there was a better, cheaper alternative?

    Thanks! sen
