Hold up.... we now have a subscription plan for a vacuum...

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 08:26 PM PDT

Is it April already? No? I guess they are serious.

    https://select.irobot.com/store/product

$200 down gets you the hardware and a month of service, cancel anytime you like, don't need to send it back, but you can't use the robot without the $25/mo service plan. So im guessing ET needs to phone home at least once a month to know you paid the bills? Maybe it has cellular built in? they make no mention of internet service being "required" After two years you could have just bought the unit outright but you still don't own it.

Should I buy one? how long until someone hacks the vacuum for work for free? 200 bucks would be a good deal lol.

Need help with existing whole house audio

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 07:39 PM PDT

Just purchased a new home which has existing whole house audio. Previous home owner used Clare Amp to control the audio which went out and I need to replace it.

I have no idea about what amplifier to get and have been talking to a few audio people. But wanted to hear what reddit has to say so I don't get taken advantage of.

Requirement: 1) Need every zone to be separated where I can play different audio in every zone (previous home owner could only play one audio from a central source in all the speakers)

Was looking at this from HTD. https://www.htd.com/Products/Whole-House-Audio/mid-level-whole-house-audio

    Any other suggestions?

How can I make my wooden Venetian blind ‘smart’?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 04:39 AM PDT

So I have a wooden Venetian blind that I would like to be able to control the tilt of smartly (not moving the whole blind up/down, as I never do that any way).

Is this possible? Here's a picture of the blinds tilt cords: https://imgur.com/gallery/FlqYOJa

I should also mention I'm in the UK.

Which 'smart blind' device would work for me, if any?

    Shelly vs Sonoff

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 11:33 PM PDT

    Hello to everyone,

i live in Europe and now I'm building my house and i just can't find out the best, safest automation i can get to setup my lights, roller shutters, garage door, stair lights with motion sensor..

I'm between shelly and sonoff products but the I'm not sure...

Any advice? Safety is a priority of course.

Sonoff has more to offer at cheaper prices with zigbee hub and sensor but shelly has fewer products but i think are more versatile with higher quality and are made in Europe..

    Any opinion is welcome!!!

    400-500 Wi-Fi Devices

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 06:49 PM PDT

Has anyone had experience with having 400-500 Wi-Fi (no hub) devices, mostly LED color changing bulbs in one building? Specifically what's the best way to manage that many devices on Wi-Fi? Multiple SSID's? While routers list capability for large number of devices in their specs it seems that in reality things don't work very well once you exceed 100 or so. Best recommended router for this set-up? ISP is Altice. Thx for any input.

Dustin Farrell, creator of Transient and Transient 2 shared my DIY Ambilight setup, using WLED, Prismatik, and my PC. You can use Steam Link with an Android TV to view your PC’s display over the network (10-20 ms delay for me), or an HDMI cable for zero lag.

    Linking Yale lock

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 09:36 PM PDT

I can't get either of my YRD-110zw locks to link with my new SmartThings hub. I had them linked to my wink previously. I've done a master reset on both. Tried following the directions, both holding the button until I hear two beeps, as well as trying the master pin/gear/7/gear/1/gear combo but the number one button isn't activating for some reason after the 7/gear combo. Any ideas?

Is there a way to share Nest Thermostat access with someone through Google Home/Nest App without giving access to the whole home (i.e. Lights, appliances)?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 08:20 PM PDT

Before Nest migrated to google home, I was able to add a person to give access to the thermostat. However now that doesn't seem possible. Looks like I have to add the person as a home member on Google Home app but that means giving access to other smart devices. All I want is to give a person rights to control the thermostat and nothing else. Any ideas?

Smoke & CO detectors compatible with Vivint?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 07:42 PM PDT

I am looking for recommendations on smoke/co detectors that are compatible with vivint. I have seen many 2gig devices on ebay that claim to work but I know that vivint recently changed their panel. Mine is brand new so I'm concerned the 2gig won't pair anymore. The units they install now are Apollo brand but the only ones I've found are much more expensive. (I bought the firstalert z-combo but they are not compatible)

    Thank you!

Probably an easy question but I can't figure it out. Alexa get hue lights to flash a color then go back to whatever they were doing.

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 11:19 AM PDT

Trying to get it to be able to alert the house under certain circumstances but not completely change the behavior of the lights. Just want to send a pulse of color for a second or so. I tried Alexa who seems to only be able to completely change the color. And someone else suggested ifttt but that seems to do about the same thing as Alexa. Any other suggestions or am I missing something? Thanks in advance.

    Help figuring out thermostats

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 01:28 PM PDT

Almost finished building a house and want to get a smart thermostat for the house. According to the contract they are going to install a Bosch Inverter Heat Pump. Not sure of the actual model or anything. But we are going to have 3(maybe 4 with basement). They ran some wires already to the different zone. Didn't get a great look but I saw at least 4 wires in there.

So my question is, do I need 4 different smart thermostats? Or can I get one for the main room then just sensors for the other zones?

Brand/model suggestions? Or any other advice. Thanks!!

    Aeotec Multisensor Humidity Reporting

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 05:10 PM PDT

I feel like there's probably something simple I'm missing here, but I need some help. I recently bought an Aeotec Multisensor 6. I paired it with SmartThings without much trouble and it's detecting motion without any problems. I can't get the temperature and humidity to report out though. I set the reporting interval to 8 mins but it won't report out values to the app unless I press the button on the back. Is there something I'm doing wrong here?

Is there a baseboard heater thermostat that replaces a knob style one on the unit?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 01:16 PM PDT

I'm looking to add a WiFi thermostat to a baseboard heater that's controlled by a knob.

Right now I could add a Mysa or other line voltage thermostat at a wall, but that involves make holes and pulling 12-3 wire which id prefer to avoid.

Anything out there that can be installed on the heater unit itself?

    Automated vacuum for garage floor

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 10:12 AM PDT

I have a very large garage-type floor I'd like to get a robo vac for.

I'd like to trigger cleanings via WiFi and connect via home assistant, but I don't need mopping.

I'd love a vacuum that can take a beating and keep going - pick up small rocks and dirt, that kind of thing.

    What's a good option?

Is creating a complete smart home with zero internet possible?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 11:34 AM PDT

Im planning on creating my own smart home from scratch but im not fond of the lack of privacy with google or amazon.

Is it possible to create a 100% offline smart home?

Also is there such a thing as an offline voice assistant? (Not a deal breaker but thought id ask while im here.)

If it isnt, i think i can probably work around them with a dummy google account (though im sure even that would cost me some privacy) but would rather have nothing to do with them at all.

For the record i do HAVE the internet, so can use it to update device firmware etc, i just dont want things on the net long term.

    Thanks.

    How to cover these plugs?

Anyone know how to make addressable LED Strips like this guy?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 02:13 PM PDT

    https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMJa4hr1t/

    https://viralleds.com/

I've been doing research on buying led strips for my living room. First I saw the philips hue overpriced garbage, then i saw the gledopto which I'm still interested in. But i came across this TikTok and I now want addressable LED strips with these effects, including sleep timers like morning timers, sound sync, meteor, etc. I'm pretty sure the hue and gledopto strips can't do this. Anyone have a tutorial about how to set up these strips with the same quality and effects.

If a service provider monitors my smart home, am I giving up my privacy?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 11:10 AM PDT

I'm very new to automating my home (installing smart plugs, bulbs, alarm system, thermostats, Alexa, and AppleTV). If it were feasible for my ISP to monitor my smart home, would they technically have access to my privacy?

Looking to make existing home security system a little smarter

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 10:50 AM PDT

Hello, recently moved into a new place that already has one of those DSC panels with some sensors around the house and on the windows. We currently aren't subscribed to any services but I'm looking for something that I can retrofit onto this panel to give me alerts or allows me to alarm/disarm from my phone. What's out there now?

    Thanks in advance!

    Smart Power Bars

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 05:52 AM PDT

I have a couple of Geeni (Merkury Innovations) products from Walmart and Canadian Tire. To say that I don't trust them is an understatement.

Their RGB bulbs are dim, but work and I have a dead exterior plug, which they have been "waiting" a year to get a replacement under "warranty" (it's never going to come).

What I actively want to replace is the Geeni WiFi power bar. I have it attached to my aquarium lights, pump, air pump and heater. I discover that it is randomly shutting plugs off all the time.

Is there a reliable and reasonably priced ZigBee, Z-Wave or WiFi power bar out there?

New house , buying a Yale Lock - WiFi or Z-Wave?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 09:27 AM PDT

I'm about to get buried in the rabbit hole of home-automation. But I need to change my locks asap on new house.

Whats the TLDR best method on setting all of this up to be future-proof. Wifi and bluetooth enabled version of the Yale or stick with Z-Wave? I am an iOS user, plan to use Alexa however in the future.
