Current HA tech almost makes me miss X10

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 08:54 AM PDT

I've been in the HA game a long time -- just shy of 25 years. Back in the day if didn't want to break the bank X10 was about all there was. Sure it had it's share of quirks, but these were knows quirks (anyone remember the hack to jump the two hot legs?) and there generally ways around them. And once it was dialed in it worked most of the time.

My current hardware is Hue, Hubitat (just replaced ST), Zooz outlets & smartplugs, schlage locks, and GE ZWave switches. Nothing exactly earth-shattering. And yet if there's one consistency, it's the lack of consistency. GE switches -- I love them when they work but about 15% just don't out of the box. I'm thankful for Amazon's return policy. The zooz smart plugs work most of the time, and then they just dont. So I take them near the hub, factory rest and repair and they work for a while. And dont even think about taking them more then 25' from the hub. The schlage lock was an absolute bitch to get to work. Had to rub it's nasty bits directly on the hub for initial pairing. Every time I change batteries I fear I'll have to do the same thing which isn't exactly convenient. Of all components, the Hue lights have been the best. And don't get me started with integrating Google Home -- what a half-assed piece of crap. Much of the time it works, but then it doesn't. Not much different than most Google stuff.

Sure, my longing for the simpler X10 days is a bit /s, but there's and element of truth to it. OK, rant mode off.

Personal Cloud from home with Nextcloud and Raspberry Pi

In this video we will install Nextcloud on a Raspberry Pi 4 so we can upload our files from mobile and desktop devices just like Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox and others, but directly to our homes with a lot more privacy.

In a times where pretty much every big company tracks you down from everywhere and it is almost impossible to escape them if you are using Internet. Nextcloud and a local computer is kind of fresh air of personal privacy.

Wait a minute here, you may ask what is Nextcloud?

Nextcloud is an open-source project that you can install on your local device. It allows you to control and upload

documents, pictures, and everything you wish on your own personal computer at home. And not on the Google, Microsoft or Amazon cloud.

To successfully implement this you will need:

    • A Raspberry Pi (where Raspberry Pi 4 is recommended) with installed RaspberryOS and secure shell access to it.
    • You will also need a public static IP contact your internet service provider for that
    • Of course You will need some kind of storage the more the better. If you want to store your pictures and videos you will need a lot, but if you want to save only important documents several gigabytes will be enough.

For the demo I will use a SD card for the RaspberryOS and a USB flash drive for the Nextcloud storage. It is recommended to use SSD drives if you have some around.

Now let's install Nextcloud on a Raspberry pi to see what will happen:

RGBCT Bulbs are a mess! What do you use?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 06:05 AM PDT

    RGBCT Bulbs are a mess!

In the Zigbee world, I have found these options.

    • IKEA Tradfri
      • untested by me
    • Philips Hue
      • great, but pricey
      • working through the Hue Hub is less good, since there is a delay on state updates due to polling
    • Sylvania/Osram/LEDVance
      • so many different models sold under so many different names and they all seem to work a little bit differently
      • The models I've tried have odd quirks. For instance, I have "Sylvania 73693" and Sylvania "73739" that, when turning on with a different color than the last time it was on, first flash to the old color and brightness, then adjust to the new color and brightness.
    • Sengled
      • untested by me but the white bulbs work great

In the WiFi world, we have these options:

    • LIFX
      • pricey
      • untested by me
    • YeeLight
      • reverse engineered protocol, so I am hesitant to trust we won't be blocked in the future
      • untested by me
    • Hue Wiz
      • untested by me
      • no official Home Assistant support
    • Tuya (under so many different brand names)
      • slow cloud protocol with native firmware
      • tuya-convert doesn't work on new devices
      • tasmota hacked bulbs don't support transitions
      • local tuya reverse engineering isn't stable
    • TP-Link
      • untested by me, but their outlets work great

Which RGB and White bulbs are you using that you've had a good experience with that also meet the following criteria?

    • No Tuya devices (because it's too hard to tell if I'll get a hackable bulb or not, and they are too slow on native firmware over the cloud).
    • Keep prices under $30/bulb US.
    • At least 800lm.
    • E26/A19 bulbs (i.e. fit standard US lamp sockets and fixtures)
    • Have mostly stable support in Home Assistant (custom_components are okay)

Caleo, Mysa or Sinope for baseboards heaters?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 11:58 AM PDT

BC Hydro are offering a $40 rebate on Caleo, Mysa or Sinope baseboard smart thermostats, so I'm thinking of upgrading.

Does anyone have any thoughts on which offers a better option for smart integration? We don't have any home assistants, but I have a few Raspberry Pi's which I could set up to make them even smarter

They're all quite reasonable, so cost isn't really an option.

Any thoughts about ease of use, integrating into smart systems and how smart they are would be helpful.

These are for 120v baseboard heaters.

Help shutting down old CPI system

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 03:42 PM PDT

How do I control this light with my smart phone? Currently has an old zenith remote.

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 05:26 PM PDT

    https://imgur.com/a/npaKGSP

I have a new-to-me home and I am having problems integrating some of the old tech into modern home automation.

This remote control controls a chandelier. There is no light switch that controls the chandelier.

So if I lose the remote (which is entirely possible as I have several small children) we will have problems.

From my research I'm pretty sure there is a remote Controlled outlet installed in the ceiling above the chandelier. I wouldn't want to bring down the chandelier to replace it. I would like to control it with my smart phone. Is there some sort of smart home bridge that would control this light? The goal is to control it with my iPhone.

How do I find the right dimmer switch for this constant current LED driver?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 10:11 PM PDT

    https://reddit-uploaded-media.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com/images%2Ft2_4fcfv%2Fm3dywn0bxku51

My house came equipped with these LED drivers for all ceiling lighting. This is my first venture into smart home electronics, so I'm not sure where to research.

From my brief googling, it seems like these are in fact Dimmable LED's, but I'm not sure which switch I should be looking for. Any advice? Thanks!

Looking for advice: IFTTT Using Nest Thermostat to control remote controlled fan

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 04:38 PM PDT

Ok, looking for some advice here. I have a Nest thermostat and some Hampton Bay remote controlled ceiling fans. My problem is that of the air conditioner and fan are both on, the room is freezing. If they're both off, it gets real hot, real fast.

Is there anyway to automate the fan to turn on whenever the ac turns off and vice-versa?

    Thanks!!

Ground needed for Shelly 1 plugged into wall outlet?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 03:36 PM PDT

I've got a simple project, just want to use the dry contact on a Shelly 1 to control a millivolt device. Shelly 1 appears to do exactly what I need but I'm not an electrical expert by any means so want to make sure I'm doing this properly and safely.

The simplest solution for me is to just punch down a wire like this into the Shelly 1 for power and plug it in to a standard outlet, then use the dry contact for the millivolt device and I'm done. I haven't been able to find any definitive resources to guide me on wiring the power for the Shelly 1 to a cable going into a wall outlet so wanted to check if anyone can confirm if it should use a grounded wire or if there's anything else a novice like me should know/be wary of, thanks.

    different "home"-automation: Chicken coop

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 06:14 AM PDT

    Hello,

I want to make my chicken-coop smart. I will have a local raspberry pi using mobile internet.

It will need a few sensors (Temperature, humidity), I thought about 1wire. It will also need one current sensor to implement a safety off for a linear motor.

Furthermore it will need a handfull of relais and a pwm-out.

    My question is:

    1) I'll probably not get a reliably accessible webserver behind a (consumer) mobile internet connection. Is there a control software with a client/server-structure? So I can run the server on my homeserver, and the raspberry pi only sends the data to the server?

    Thanks Daniel

EDIT: The chicken coop is not in my backyard, but in a remote location. So no Wifi-solution

Beginner- renovating condo and want hue light bulbs in recess lights in the ceiling.

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 11:40 PM PDT

I'm renovating my condo and upgrading lights so I can have recess lighting instead of lamps

I wanted to put hue light bulbs so I can control with Siri.

My contractor told me I would need something in the electrical wiring to do that. Asked me if I want to control lights per section vs individually

My understanding was that hue works with any socket, i install the bulb, connect to wifi and control within the app? Does it need special wiring?

If it cost too much, I was just gon tell him to just do regular recess lighting and install hue light bulbs after if it works. Can anyone help me?

    Kohler DTV Shower Valve

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 12:34 PM PDT

My master shower failed and now it's time for a full on gut/remodel of the entire space.

    https://i.imgur.com/TbCzzxL.jpg

The shower will be a Schluter Kerdi install 72' x 62' with a slot drain at the wall and two shower stations.

Shower station 1 will have three water jets and a ceiling rain tile

Shower station 2 will have three water jets, a ceiling rain tile and a hand shower.

Is the protocol for the DTV system accessible/available? Is the communication between the controller and the shower valve (RJ11) RS232 (which I can reverse engineer).

I have extensively automated my house and use Command Fusion as the controlling app. I have a Moxa NPORT for RS232 to lan communication, Binary MOIP a/v matrix, RadioRa2 lighting and HVAC, Luma camera system and DSC security system all integrated into the app I created.

I'm hoping that the RJ11 connection between the Kohler components is RS232 and that I can connect it to my Moxa.

Shelly Dimmer 2 Vs. Shelly 2.5

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 04:55 AM PDT

Hi all, can anyone help me identify what are the difference between Shelly Dimmer 2 vs. Shelly 2.5.

I understand the Shelly Dimmer 2 supports dimming, but since it's cheaper than the Shelly 2.5 (in amazon) , I suspect that there must be some other differences.

I've tried to look on their official website and couldn't find any clear answer.

Beginner - How can i control smart plugs/led strips with single application

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 02:21 PM PDT

Hi all, i'm a absolut beginner on this topic so sorry for my dump questions.

What's my target: I have Gosund Smart Plugs and LED Wifi controllers here at the moment and control them with two seperated apps. I'm searching for a future proof and cheap as possible (so no Hue or others) solution to control this with a single application which should by available on 2 Phones, later on probably also wall mounted tablets. I just want to switch on and of lights/plugs and change colour of the leds.

I currently have set up a Raspberry Pi 4B 4GB with Open Media Vault as simple NAS for data storage. I also looked into openHAB which i could get installed on the same Pi via Docker, but i think thats a bit overkill and i'm afraid that this would cause to much maintenance.

So is there a simple solution for my target?

Thanks ahead and have a nice day :)

How to motorize and iot-ize this skylight?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 07:56 AM PDT

Hi all. Can anyone recommend how I could motorize this skylight and add a networked controller to it? I can't even find what this kind of skylight is called after a half hour of searching so I imagine some of you more experience folks would know what to do with servos and maybe some sort of ESP controller.

Two motion sensing switches for 1 light?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 02:02 PM PDT

I've got a stairwell light with a switch at the top and bottom, I'd like to put a motion sensor on both switches and I can't seem to get it wired correctly. I'm using the lutron dual pole switches, will this work if I get it wired right? If not, is there a different switch that's made for this application?

The way it's set up now, I have a motion sensor at the bottom and a normal dual pole switch at the top. The problem with my current setup is that going down the stairs you have to walk halfway in the dark before the bottom motion sensor sees you and turns the lights on.

Smart Switch that doesn't require a neutral wire?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 07:50 PM PDT

I'd like to be able to control my swimming pool light, which is LED, via a smart switch. The switch I tried allowed some current through to the light all the time, which I think was due to the lack of a neutral wire in the box. Is there a way to work around this? The enclosure is outside, in case that matters. Thanks!

Martin Jerry 3 way switch toggling multiple times

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 07:17 PM PDT

Hey! Figured you all would know better than most.

I just installed a Martin Jerry 3 way switch. I have a standard 3 way on the other side.

It seemed to work just fine for a bit. Synced it with the Tuya app, got it setup on home assistant. Good to go.

Came back after a few minutes of the light being on and the indicator was blinking. I resynced with the app thinking it lost it somehow.

NOW it is still showing up in Tuya and home assistant, but when I switch it on it flips twice. On-off-on.

Anyone got an idea of what's going on or how to fix it?

What would you do with an unused space on a light switch panel

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 04:11 AM PDT

Say you've got a multigang switch box that isn't full, either because a light fixture has been removed, or controls are otherwise combined. Instead of just putting a blank cover over it, are there any smart controls or devices you'd put there?

And since I'm obviously talking about me, all my lights are on z-wave switches and I'm powered by HomeSeer.
