What are the benefits of a smart display, and do I need one?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 10:03 PM PDT

The house is fairly basic. Couple of Samsung S20 phones. A Google Nest mini. The new Chromecast. Nest locks, thermostat, protect and drop cam. 5 Eufy cams. 2 Samsung TVs. Water timer.

Wondering what is the benefits of buying something like the Google Nest Max would be?

    Thanks

New to home automation. It’s not much much, but it’s honest work. My “goodnight” routine: 1. Turns on bedroom lamps 2. Turns off all living room lights 3. Shuts the blinds until sunrise 4. Turns the kick board lighting on until midnight 5. Locks the door 6. Tells me goodnight

    can I reuse eufy sensors?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 07:50 PM PDT

    can I reuse eufy sensors?

I have 2 of these lights which has motion (and light may be) sensor. They are so good and works perfectly to me. One of the two aren't working, I am thinking if I can reuse that sensor for automation.

I want to use with HA and control some other lights with this sensor.

Any one has a tutorial or guidance on how to do it?

    Thanks for reading.

Updating "knob on baseboard" heater control

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 10:12 PM PDT

Hi, new to the automation / modernization gig.. hope Im in the right place.

Ive got a number of baseboards around my suite, most of them are wired 240vac through in-room thermostats on the wall. The big 2500w unit in my living room was an add-on though and, unfortunately, is controlled by a single knob on the front of the unit.

So far, the only system Ive found that would allow me to mount a wall mount stat somewhere down the middle/end of this long, narrow room is the Honeywell Redlink unit with a wireless receiver and relay unit you mount on the baseboard itself.

Has anyone run into other retail solutions that do this? Id hoped Sinope did as theres a rebate on their stats at the moment and I was going to update the other rooms.. but would prefer to stay with one system if I can.

Control ceiling fan with a Sonoff switch

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 09:03 PM PDT

I'm wanting to install a TP-Link dimmer switch for my living room. The living room has recessed lights and a ceiling fan in the middle of the room. The ceiling fan is in the same switch as the other lights so I need to put it on a separate circuit so the dimmer doesn't interfere with the fan. I'm thinking, what about using a Sonoff switch in the fan housing.

I'm not going to buy a smart fan yet, and the current fan doesn't have an IR remote that I could pair up with a blaster or something. So that's that.

What I want is to know is if a $5 Sonoff switch would be suitable to put inside the fan bezel/enclosure/case/whatever to turn the fan on and off.

I'm concerned about fire hazard more than the ability of the sonoff to do the job of turning on and off. Are those switches safe enough to keep one so close to the attic or are they just designed to be for floor and table lamps and such?

How are you powering under vanity and under counter strips to hide the power cable?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 08:58 PM PDT

I want to automate some under vanity LED strips that will turn on during night hours so we're not blinded if we have to get up in it middle of the night. That's for the person still sleeping as well since our ensuite doesn't have a door but I'm not sure how to power them. There's a receptacle on the wall but I don't want a power cable hanging out of it.

Same question goes to under counter lights in the kitchen.

    Thanks!

Looking for ideas for "on premises" camera system

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 03:47 PM PDT

We currently own 5 Nest cameras (we have kindof a big property) and I was looking into a higher resolution camera to see our back yard/pasture better. I looked at getting the Nest IQ camera, but it order to mount it where I want to mount it, I would have to get the optional outdoor power adapter and ($50 on top of $400) plus I wasn't sure if it was going to work anyway.

Given how (though currently unlikely) Google likes to discontinue products and brick hardware, I though it might be good to go with something not "in the cloud".

So what are my options? I am a fan of Unifi network hardware (I own 6 network access points), but they're camera systems seem like a shit show (with forced software updates and discontinuing hardware etc), so I'm looking for OTHER options. On Amazon, Reolink seems popular....

2019+ Model Year Genie and MyQ Compatibility

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 06:18 PM PDT

I took advantage of a sale during Prime Day and bought the MyQ hub as I recently moved into a house. I had no clear indication as to what was compatible with my Genie 1035 as there was some mixed messaging on the Chamberlain website as to the compatibility given just the named model. and model year (I had to guess 2017+). Details are below, at bottom is tl;dr and am ultimately wondering if I can make the two compatible via a receiver or if both companies are full of it.

    Some Details:

    - per Genie support, a 2020 Chain Drive 500 Model 1035. closer inspection is model# 201774128281AA (what confirmed model year) after question the Genie people this is a 2020 model and is both intellicode 1 and intellicode 2. Not sure it matters, but the transmitter I have says G1T-A as the model; they come pre-programmed. They said the devices are not compatible.

    - Chamberlin online support documents seems to say anything genie over a certain year is okay on their website (not using compatibility tool), but the catch is their actual support people say anything over 2019 model year is not supported per some changes to block MyQ compat on the Genie side in support of their own home automation piece. Their online compatibility tool is somewhat high level and not really helpful IMO given the new information and other conflicting support docs.

    - Why MyQ? It works with my ring setup and with my ADHD and new hood need the reminder to keep it closed.

TL;DR 2020 Genie 1035 compatible in any way with MyQ via adding another device?

    Smart Doorbell with Slate

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 04:38 PM PDT

I currently have a system similar to this intercom, but it has broken and I want to upgrade it with a smart doorbell instead that still allows me to unlock my gate slate preferably within the same app and also have 2 way communication.

I say this post that helped, but it didn't seem to have a great solution and I also don't need POE or wired internet at all. I've looked at this video and it seems great, but it doesn't allow for 2 way communication. Does anyone know a solution with the esp32 for communication or have another option like integrating my slate into the Ring app or the like?

    Thank you

Does anyone know a way to incorporate more Hue lights into ambilight?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 12:08 PM PDT

I have an ambilight TV and lots of hue bulbs around it. The ambilight+hue feature allows 9 bulbs to be used as ambilight augmentation. I would rather want to have 30 lights instead. Is there a way to do that?

I’m convinced there will never be a “good enough” dimmable LED down light bulb. I’ve tried so many to go with my Lutron Caseta dimmer switches and always revert back to incandescent.

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 03:32 PM PDT

I know there could be massive energy savings to replace them all (42 in total across my house). I just really wish there were better options.

Eufy died.. need something to replace it

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 06:15 AM PDT

Last year I picked up a Eufy 11+ refurb for $100. We've never had a robot prior and figured for $100, wth. My wife loved it. Now a little over a year later it's dead.

Dead means: One of the motors has some sort of short or otherwise damage so the wheels don't spin as freely as they used to. I've opened it up and watched some repair videos. I'm not willing to disassemble the motor itself and mess with the windings to get this $100 thing to work again.

That being said, I'd like our next purchase to last more than 16 months.

I've seen Eufy is recommended as a high value brand, but with the number of repair videos I found and the fact that I opened it up 2-3 times for various issues: Front Bumper stuck, Dirty sensor, Wheel motor issue I'm not sure I can agree.

Budget is sub $400. Eufy again? Roborock? iRobot?

First floor is tile/hardwood with low pile area rugs without frilly edges or anything. We have a no shed dog. We have toys. We are a google and home assistant household. ~1700 sqft to be covered

    TIA

Anyone try this? Parking assistant from garage door safety sensors

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 01:26 PM PDT

Pretty much it. We have vehicles that just *barely* fit in the garage. The IR safety sensor is the exact right height to detect if we're in far enough. But, you can't really see the little green LED. I would like to slave an indicator off of this some way, so that in the front of the garage a light would come on letting you know you are in far enough. Anyone ever find a way to do this? Apologies if this is the wrong sub, but you seemed like an inventive bunch.

    SmartThings Slow Dim and Light-up

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 01:20 PM PDT

I was looking into getting into first smart home devices with a smart light and SmartThings hub. One of the features I want to do is slowly dim at night across an hour or two from normal light to a dim red, then in the morning a gentle wake-up feature to slowly brighten across a half-hour or so.

Is something like this possible with SmartThings or another hub? It's something I'm really interested in but can't find whether it's possible or how.

Magic home led strip controller keeps resetting

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 12:52 PM PDT

As I said in the title. I set its wifi a name and a password, connect it to my wifi network - - > works fine for 30 minutes - - > resets all the internal wifi settings, disconnects from home wifi and starts blinking

Any ideas what could be going wrong? I just got it today as one of my first home automation gadgets.

Ps.: It works fine with Google Home, but is there a way to get it to work with smart things so I can control it from my new Samsung TV?
