    Zwave motion for outside

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 11:15 PM PDT

I have 3 outside lights that I have connected to a zwave switch. I use to have 2 cameras that would sense motion and through the hub turn the lights on for a certain amount of time.

I have upgraded the cameras and lost the motion function. I am in need of a motion sensor or something that would work. I don't want to replace the light fixtures with motion ones because I want them all to come on at the same time and can't run a tracer wire to the other two.

Smart lock recommendation: Yale x Nest or August?

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 09:38 PM PDT

I will potentially do Airbnb and currently have tenants. I like that YALE x August/Nest have keypads, so guests don't need their phone to unlock.

heard August has a better app, but I have nest cameras. Is there any benefit to choosing the Yale x Nest if I am paying for nest aware? Or are they seperate?

    Switching on/off home theater pre-amp using google home/smarthings via a 12v trigger

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 08:34 PM PDT

    Hi guys...

I use google home and have a smartthings hub. I'd like I be able to switch on/off my Emotiva pre-amp... The pre amp is equipped with a 12v trigger input. So I'd like to set it up so I can tell google to turn on my preamp (that subsequently triggers the power amps) and have it do so using that 12v trigger.

I'm not too handy with this stuff beyond plug and play/off the shelf products. Does anyone know of an easy solution for this?

    Thanks!

Arlec Smart Switches and Grid Connect

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 12:04 AM PDT

We installed a bunch of Arlec Smart Switches earlier this year, synced them all into Google Home and let the magic happen. We have added more of the Grid Connected ecosystem too including plug through smart switches and LED strip lighting as well as the motion and door/window sensors to trigger a few nice automations too.

Generally, I have good things to say about the light switches, they work like switches if you want to use them the old fashioned way (like when Grandma visits) as well as the smart way when the kids haven't turned off the lights and I can turn them off from my phone or more often by yelling at Google.

But onto my little issue. I find from time to time random switches just disappear from the system and Google tells me 'that device is not set up'. when I check, sure enough it's dropped out of Grid Connect too.

A quick "add new device" gets it back in (and it remembers its previous name) but then I have to go back into Google Home and assign it to a room. I haven't tried going outside and killing the lighting circuit power to force a reset to see if it magically fixes itself. I've checked and everything is running the latest firmware, so there isn't an update to be had there.

Now it's only happened a handful of times over six months and to random different switches so it doesn't appear to be a particular unit that has poor wifi or something that is causing me issues. We also have two Unifi Pro AC AP's (one at either end of the house) so Wifi is pretty good everywhere.

Has anyone else encountered these issues?

How to achieve my use case with light sensitivity?

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 07:51 PM PDT

I am thinking of below setup.

A lights strip under kitchen cabinets and normal ceiling light with manual switch(can't replace with smart switch) on kitchen.

With a motion sensor, when I enter kitchen the light strip should turn on. When(in case) I turn on tube light manually the light sensor sitting on top of cabinet detects and turns off strip lights.

When I turn off tube light, motion sensor will wait for 30 sec for any motion, if no motion no action needed(which means both are turned off).

I gonna use HA for controlling all these.

    I would like to know

    1. If this an achievable approach?
    2. I have no idea what kind of light sensor I should take, prefer on budget (aliexpress is also ok). Or is it called something else?
    3. Do u guys have any other ideas around these lines?

HELP - Regulating the temperature of my room with smart sensors and smart plugs.

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 07:20 PM PDT

Im trying to regulate the temperature of my room with a space heater. I want to get a smart sensor to measure the temperature and with my space heater plugged into a smart plug. And having a simple command that if the temperature gets below x degrees turn on and when above x temperature turn off. And maybe only run that command during certain times of the day.

I know the general concept but I don't know how to make this happen. I have a wemo smart plug connected to the space heater and I manually turn it on and off with alexa. What do I need to purchase to make this all happen automatically? Thanks

Eufy Battery Doorbell (2K) - Best Option?

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 07:13 PM PDT

Hello. I have an escalating situation that has me looking into wireless security doorbells for my home. Being able to keep an eye out around my house during the day and night is turning into a necessity.

Right now I'm leaning towards the wireless Eufy 2K doorbell.

I have an old home with no wired doorbell. So a wireless, battery operated system seems to make the most sense for my situation. It is also important to me that it's local storage and not having to go to a cloud to get it. I'd like to see it like when I'm away from my home on my phone as well. I am looking for good day and night coverage. My car is about 20-30 feet from one of my door and would like the camera to be able to keep an eye on it. If there's motion on the far side of the car so you think it would trigger the motion activation or is that going to be too far away? I always want something discrete and it looks like you can turn off the LES on it. Is there any issues hooking up two doorbells to the same base station? When it starts recording video, does it automatically start recording audio as well? If so, can it be set to record video only? Are there any other options that should be considered besides Eufy? Is there anything you don't like about the Eufy?

Thanks for reading. Normally I take my time and do my own research but I'd like to get this figured out ASAP.

Buying house with wired Nest Outdoor Camera but want a doorbell. Ring or Nest?

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 02:38 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm buying a house here in the UK that unexpectedly the owners are leaving the Nest Outdoor Camera (covering front of house driveway, including front door)+ Thermostat for me. I noticed they had a Ring doorbell which I thought was odd given the Nest equipment too, but I don't think they have any wiring so went for the cheaper option.

Now at my current place I have Google Minis and a Ring doorbell + chime and it's fine, but I was hoping to expand and get more cameras and thermostat, plus more Google Home stuff.

I picked up a Ring on Prime Day for £59 plus a Echo Flex for £14. I can return these up until end of Jan if needed. A Nest Hello at best is £165 but I don't think there is wiring for it.

Given the house comes with the Nest Outdoor Camera, is it worth looking into a Hello? I'd have to get it wired up. There's also subscriptions to consider. Before seeing this house I knew I wanted a doorbell + backdoor camera so figured I would get a Ring doorbell and Ring outdoor camera, so subscription wise that would be £25 for each device per year. Nest is £50 for all devices so to even us the wired Outdoor Camera I'd have to pay the £50.

Is it worth paying the £165 for the Hello which I know has better quality in a lot of areas (live on a busy road, already have issues at current place with Ring motion alerts), plus getting wiring installed too?

I figured it might be as it's £50 a year already, so for a camera on backdoor too would come to same price for three devices per year as two Ring devices.

Or do I stick with the Ring I have, and either don't pay Nest sub fee or use it as secondary cost? Open to either, just interested if anyone has an ideas or experience with this.

    Appreciate any help!

Change lock for new tenant necessary if deadbolt uses a smart lock?

Let's say i have the August lock set up on the deadbolt and i am able to change the passcode for the a new tenant. Do you think it's still necessary to change the lock/ keyhole?

Edit: they would get the same key as previous tenant for back up, but just wondering if it's okay to not rekey if smartlock code will change.

    Thanks!

Google Home video camera viewable within the Google Home app itself?

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 03:44 AM PDT

Over the weekend I bought and set up a pair of Wyze cameras. They're fine, they "work" but you can't view the video itself in the Google Home app. You need to use the Wyze app, which for me is enough of a hassle to return them and shoot for a competing product. Does anyone have something which works in this way? My home is small so I don't need anything super fancy but I want to manage all my automation gear in one and only one app, no exceptions.

    zipato or homeseer

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 09:11 PM PDT

ok so I spent some time a while back ( about a year ago) studying and playing around with zipato and homeseer. I like some stuff from each, and I haven't decide what I want to do. I'm moving cross country soon, first into a rental and then into a home, not sure if it makes difference. goal is to automate complete place i still like zwave but that can be changed if

I like the rule creator in zipato, the UI looks easier to manage as well. homeseer seems to have wider support community.

    looking for advice, thought, opinions.

Device recommendations for dad with dementia.

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 09:05 PM PDT

What devices should I get? I'm on a budget so I want a cost effective system.

My dad has dementia so I'm wanting to setup a smart home system that will allow me to monitor him remotely from my home and tell him reminders and actions to preform when he triggers different sensors.

I already have an amazon echo show but nothing else.

Dad has a bedroom, a great room, and hallway where the front door is, and a bathroom. That's it.

I want a speaker in every room so I can drop in and tell him things remotely using my phone. I also want Alexa to be able to tell him things in every room. I want Alexa to tell him reminders like, it's time for breakfast. Or if a motion detector detects him walking in the hallway near the front door at 2 am, for Alexa to be able to tell him it's too late to go outside, go back to sleep. If he continues to open the front door, I want a door sensor to send me an alert if he opens the front door after 10 pm. I want cameras in all rooms so I can see what's going on.

    What devices should I get?

I was leaning toward wyze cameras in every room. The echo show in the living room. An echo flex speaker in the bedroom. An echo flex speaker with echo motion sensor in the bathroom. And a wyze door sensor and echo flex speaker with motion sensor in the hallway near the front door. What do you guys think?

I wonder if this is overkill because the wyze cams have speakers too from my understanding so maybe s flex speaker isn't required. But can Alexa say reminders through wyze camera speakers?

    Idea for fully automatic lights

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 02:26 AM PDT

Hi. I had an idea when reading the Mega "getting started" thread. It says:

The Holy Grail of a smart home is being able to customize the environment to suit the specific people in the room/area, and specifically to suit their activity. For instance, you may want different lighting or sound settings if you are watching tv rather than your child, or have different things occur if your child is leaving the house rather than when you arrive, etc., etc. The only way to do that in a practical way within a home environment is through facial recognition cameras. Although it's technically feasible, at this time it's simply not practical for the vast majority of home owners. But there are ways to get pretty close.

Think about this: what happens if you grab an expensive item at a supermarket/store and try to leave without paying for it? *beep beep*, right? Couldn't the same kind of system be applied at a home? Each room has a detector at the door, which immediately detects when a smartphone (or smartwatch) passes through. Double detector, actually, so it can know the direction in which the person went (whether the person entered or left the room). When detecting that someone is entering the room, the system immediately turns on the lights of that room (if there are no other people in there already, otherwise the system would do nothing). If a second person comes into the room, nothing happens, but the system knows there are now two people in the room. When one of the two people leaves the room, nothing happens, but when the second person leaves the room the system immediately turns off the lights of the room because it knows there are no more people left in the room. Feasible? If that worked it'd be perfect, wouldn't it?

    Recessed lighting recommendations

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 05:22 PM PDT

I am looking to remove some old florescent tube lighting and replace them with recessed LED lights. The number of options has me overwhelmed.

My criteria: 1. Not a retrofit (because it isn't one) 2. Dimmable 3. Color selectable (the more the better but at least a range of whites). RGB is nice but not necessary 4. Not WiFi 5. Ideally hubitat, home assistant or something similar integration. I haven't settled on which but would like to keep my options open 6. Doesn't require internet access for full functionality 7. Reliable 8. Can I ask for it to be inexpensive as well?

    Thanks

I can't get the list to work either...

anyone know of something like a reverse wireless light switch/relay that would work in this use case?

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 11:55 AM PDT

    Diagram: https://imgur.com/a/iKAkvqq

A friend wants to add under the cabinet lighting in their kitchen that are controlled by one switch. The cabinets already have power outlets under them. There is also already a switch installed right next to the main light switch for the kitchen that controls one receptacle under the counter.

So, I'm trying to find a way to use that outlet (that is not used for anything else) to signal the under counter lighting. As the light switch an extra light switch is installed in the prime spot.

I've already checked my options out for running addition wires thoroughly and decided against it. It would require to much demo. So, I'm looking for a way to trigger a relay or something via that outlet that is already there. As I can easily already tap into the power that is already under the cabinets. I just need some way to control the lighting.

Please let me know if yall have any ideas. I spent a long time looking but I could not find anything I thought would work which. I have a decent background in electronics and could do a diy thing but that would mean I would be the only one who could fix it if something happened. So I'm looking for a more "stock" solution.

    Smart Home New Build

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 02:38 AM PDT

    Hi folks

So I'm in the very early stages of a self build project. Currently we use Home Assistant and a mix of Z wave, zigbee and WiFi and it works ok. But occasionally we get a light turn on in the middle of the night which pushes the WAF down pretty low.

Anyway we have UFH throughout in the new place and can wire it to spec so I'm looking for something a bit more designed for new build rather than retrofit. I want to avoid wireless where possible and cable everything I can. I will be installing it myself so that cuts out lutron or control 4 because of their unwillingness to provide their software etc.

I quite like the look of Loxone. I know I have to buy the kit through a distributor now but at least I can still wire and program it myself.

I like clean walls so am keen to avoid having thermostats in every room so the Loxone light switches with built in temp sensors would work well.

We want the system to control primary lighting (wall/ceiling lights but not worried about lamps etc), under floor heating, ventilation/heat recovery, security alarm (same motion sensors used for lighting control as security system etc). So far Loxone is ticking all the boxes.

But there are some naff reviews for Loxone out there too so am I missing something? Is these something else I should be looking at? Budget is about £10k so I want to get it right.

4 bed house plus study. 3 bathrooms, lounge, dining room and kitchen.

Lighting would be a mix of 240v dimmers for wall and feature lights etc, Loxone tree down lights in bathrooms, hallways and kitchen etc and the Loxone ceiling lights in bedrooms.

We have a sensible size Sonos system already so will continue to use that for audio.

What have I missed? What other options are there? Is Loxone as perfect as it sounds like it is? Should I avoid it like the plague?

    Ta

    Nick

Home Security options - Starting from scratch

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 03:20 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

My wife and I recently purchased a detached home and will be moving in late November and are starting to look into home security systems and some home automation but it's all a little overwhelming. I should start by saying we're in Canada.

Currently we have two Nest minis that we mainly just use for Spotify and the occasional cast to the TV but I wouldn't say we're dedicated to the Google ecosystem. We're certainly comfortable with what we've used so far though.

I was looking at Nest Secure but it's not available in Canada. Ring looks good and affordable but doesn't integrate with Google Home. Would making a switch to the Amazon system be painful at all? Or would it just be a matter of getting used to saying Alexa instead of Hey Google?

If we're wanting to eventually add other smart devices like thermostat, outlets, lights, etc, is the Amazon system still a good option? Or should we look at a combo of Nest and Ring products? Are there any other combos or reputable providers that we may not have considered?

I've looked at Home Assistant as well but I'm not sure I want to go that route just yet. Maybe a future project.

Any advice for someone starting from scratch would be appreciated.

Smart dimmer causes lights to flash when turning off bathroom fan

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 11:32 AM PDT

I installed a GE/Jasco/Enbrighten z-wave smart dimmer (model 46204) into a bathroom (modern construction with neutral wires - built 2014) that has separate switches for the vanity lights and a bathroom fan. The vanity has Cree dimmable LED bulbs in it. Dimming works great, other than a buzzing sound that I'm still trying to get used to, but the main problem is that when the vanity is partially dimmed and I turn the fan off, the vanity lights will flash to 100% for a split second. They don't flash if the vanity is off or at 100%. It's almost like the fan is feeding into the vanity circuit somehow? Could it be feeding through the circuit breaker? I believe both the vanity and the fan are on the same circuit breaker switch. It doesn't make a difference with LED or incandescent, they both quickly flash with the fan turns off. Any ideas on what to check next?
