My Z-Wave dimmer is suddenly overloading my lights...?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 05:25 PM PST

I have a GE Z-Wave dimmer that's been working fine for a couple of years. About a month ago, the lights started behaving oddly:

When I set the dimmer to 65% or less, it works fine. If I set it to 70%, the lights flash on for 2 seconds then shut off. If 75%+, the lights flash on for an instant and then shut off. It's as if 70% overloads them. I can also set them to 1% and then hold the dimmer button up, which will brighten them and then they'll suddenly shut off and brighten again, and again, etc.

Any idea what's going on here, and how to troubleshoot?

Are there benefits to waiting for CHIP?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 06:27 PM PST

I recently moved into a new construction home. I have several home automation/smart devices now (lots of echos, Rachio sprinkler controller, ecobees, MyQ garage, Arlo doorbell, and Somfy blinds). I'd like to continue my home automation journey, primarily with light switches.

I've read some about Project CHIP which had me wondering if there are any benefits to waiting for the protocol to be published and a next generation of devices to follow. Alternatively, I'd love to say screw it and spend some Christmas vacation time installing Lutron Casetas!

    4 way smart switch recommendation?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 10:05 PM PST

So I have a pretty basic 3 standard switches spreaded around my apartment that controls bunch of lights. I think it's called 4-way switch. No dimmer or anything. Just simple on and off switches. I want to update these to smart switches. Any recommendations? Also do I need to change them all or I can change one of it to be smart and rest two can still be regular physical switches ? Like master slave or something?

    Adding monitoring/alerting to home?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 09:40 PM PST

I've got a very mixed bag of devices in the house: Nest for thermostat, doorbell camera, and smoke detectors (plan to add more Video in future). Alexa for home assistant. I do have a 4th gen Apple TV but have never worked with HomeKit.

I've also got experience with Raspberry Pi and other programmable devices, I've got several ESP 8266's and think they are very cool.

Here's what I'd like to add: i would like to add a gate monitor (detect open gate so the dogs don't get out) as well as detect a pump alarm (flashing light in the control panel) that , because it is in the yard and out of daily viewing, we rarely see and sometimes the pump can be malfunctioning for days before we (or our Neighbor) notice the light flashing.

What is like to be able to do is add some simple sensors for both of these (water leakage is another thing I have thought about) and be able to get notifications if any of the sensors are in an alarm state:

    • send SMS to phone (family all has iPhones so iOS app for notifications is also a possible choice)
    • have Alexa tell me "the back gate is open" or "the grinder pump light is on".
    • possible have a status panel by the front door (mind you this could be done very old school too)

I am wondering what direction to go: right now I am more interested in adding the monitoring than necessarily unifying all of my systems into one central hub.

Internet connection is generally good in my house and I have a strong Wifi deployment throughout the house. Given that the two initial sensors are outside, Zigbee or other wireless tech might be an option, although since both of these sensors are very close to one another, running sensor wires into the house would be Simple to do.

Any suggestions? For the actual physical interfacing side I feel like Pi or ESP 8266 would be the way to go (ie with some existing software framework) but for the software/notification side it seems I must be able to leverage something that is already out there.

    All input very welcome!

How can I automate this thermostat?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 09:25 PM PST

Link to picture of said thermostat at bottom. I've been wondering how I can automate this thermostat, since I hate having it hot during day (so it's mostly off) but I abhor waking up to a cold apartment. The little lever at the top moves side to side to affect the red line, whereas the orange line represents the current temperature. If red line is to the right of the orange line, the heat starts. In the simplest scenario I would have the red line be moved to a designated spot during middle of night and then back to another setting after I wake up.

I'm not mechanically inclined, so I don't know the best practices method of automating this. Would appreciate any inputs. Thank you.

How to remove z-wave dimmer from CPI Security smart hub (qolsys iq panel 2) ?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 09:06 PM PST

Bought a new construction house that came with z-wave locks, lights, and thermostats. It also came with a "Smart Hub" from CPI Security (Regional security in the Carolinas). This smart hub was programed to connect to all my z-wave devices...the thing is this hub sucks, its clunky, doesnt give me the freedom I want for automation and I want to do everything through my Ring Alarm hub.

I was able to get my locks and thermostats on my Ring Hub since they have physical enroll buttons and settings. My Dimmer (Eaton RF9536) is the issue since I cant unenroll it from the device itself, so I'm trying to remove it from the smart hub panel setting.

Now I can get into "advanced settings" on the smart hub but there are no options to remove any of the devices.

Any ideas? I've looked up the manual for the smart hub and it seems there is a way, but CPI has it disabled for their hubs.

Should I integrate smoke/CO detectors into my alarm panel?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 12:53 PM PST

I'm about to install a Qolsys IQ Panel 2+ in my home, and a recent pitfall I discovered is that smoke/co detectors have to use one of the alarm radios (PowerG,319mhz) instead of zwave. It supports zwave but only for home automation, appears they don't trust zwave for life saving things.

The PowerG and Qolsys radio detectors are all standalone and not combo units. I read a consumer reports article that said independent units faired better than the combo devices detecting fires. It's about $50 each for the Qolsys IQ detectors for fire and CO.

I've been eyeing the nest protect system, but was a little worried reading multiple amazon reviews saying their house caught fire and the system never activated. They come out to be about the same price as separate sensors that integrate into my security panel.

First alert has a pretty good deal for zwave devices, 3 combo units for $80 at costco but I can't use those with the system unless I picked up a separate zwave hub.

Is it worth it having everything linked into one system on the IQ Panel? The nest protect seems pretty nice but it has no integration support with any system. Also do I really need smart detectors? I feel like smart fire alarms would be ideal and I can get by with dumb CO detectors. I really want a CO detector that reads the PPM value instead of just going off at a set 35ppm. I think the nest is able to read CO levels?

Anyways I can get a cheap dumb CO detector with a readout built into it and not have to get a connected device. I really like smarthome stuff, but not being able to use $27 zwave detectors and paying $100 a pop for fire/CO has me wondering about my choice of the IQ panel like I'm wasting money on the PowerG detectors. Is the nest reliable? I'm not opposed spending the money for any of these, I'm just wondering from first hand use accounts how nice it is to have or if there's an ideal route to take in this scenario.

Another feature I'd like is the ability to silence fire/CO alarms from an app for false alarms, no idea if the security panel can do this. I'm not paying for central monitoring because I don't want anyone auto-dispatched, just for me to be notified.

    Bluetooth TV Range Inquiry

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 05:46 PM PST

I've picked up a TCL that has a Bluetooth range of something like 1'.

Is there any way to extend this to an actually effective range?

Everything else about the TV functions as intended, so I'm less than enthused about potentially returning the tv.

    Random devices drop wifi periodically

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 07:52 AM PST

I have a few devices at random, that will drop wifi and won't reconnect until I unplug/plug back in. As soon as I plug something in, something ELSE will drop wifi.

Trying to trace this down, but unsure what to check specifically on this. Router type is ASUS RT-AX88U with Asus most recent firmware. . any ideas/input appreciated.

Disconnect Smartplug from WiFi via IP Address?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 03:38 PM PST

I have a Smart Plug plugged in a stair well that is inaccessible unless I have 15minutes spare, a drill, a ladder and someone to ensure I dont fall.

However, I know the IP address of the Smartplug but my ISP (BT) doesn't seem to allow me to simply remove its connection from the router.

Can I disconnect it from my WiFi so it will the start broadcasting its own WiFi signal again and I can connect to it once more? I removed it accidentally.

Shelly 2.5 disconnects from the network after a few weeks - how to debug?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 11:42 AM PST

    Hi,

I have a shelly 2.5 behind a wall switch and it controls my smart bulbs through the home assistant. It usually works fine, but after something like 10-20 days it simply disconnects from the network (I don't see it in the router's connected devices nor can ping it, stops sending stuff via MQTT).

I don't see anything weird in HA.

Is there a way how I could tell what's going on and debug this? Is anyone experiencing any issues like that?

What's the best home automation way of stopping another huge flood?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 03:01 PM PST

I recently lost the ceiling and contents of my living room when a central heating pipe leaked in the night. According to the previous owner of my house, this has happened before. The pipes are PVC push fits and have all been checked, but I am still terrified this may happen again.

Can anyone recommend a water sensor that will work on carpet, can be paired with a few others and will send an alert to my iPhone if water is detected.

Also let me know if you have any alternative ideas?

    Many thanks in advance.

    Brilliant switch on multiple circuits

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 01:45 PM PST

Hey guys, I recently purchased a 3 gang brilliant smart switch. When I started installing it I noticed that there are 2 circuits used for the three lights i want to control. I did some looking on brilliants website and found a statement saying that the 4 gang can be used with multiple circuits but the 3 gang is "not certified" for multiple circuits. Has anyone else run into this? Will the unit work if I just wire it up?

    Zooz or Inovelli?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 01:35 PM PST

I have a GE switch that works great, but am thinking about adding on to the smart switches in my home. There may also be some situations where I have some three-ways and I'd rather not have to add an add-on switch. Which would be the best option here?

    Xiomi STYJ02YM and public WiFi

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 04:16 AM PST

I recently moved to a new appartment and WiFi is free here but also it is a public network so all the tenants can connect.

Unfortunately I discovered that my vacuum mop p (STYJ02YM), does not connect to public WiFi for security reasons...

I assume that I could create a WiFi bridge/tether with an old Galaxy S4 but I tried Netshare and Netshare+ without success, I assume because I need to change the proxy and the Mi Home app does not allow me to do so.

Any other app I could use? I could probably root the S4, if it is not already rooted.

Does anyone have any idea besides buying a WiFi repeater and create a secure hotspot through that?

If that is my only option, can anyone recommend a cheap repeater that will do what I need?

    Thank you.

    Humidity Control

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 12:07 PM PST

So I got a Nest Thermostat. It has a humidity sensor built in so I can tell how dry the air is getting. I have a dumb Humidifier and a smart plug. I want to be able to turn on/off the plug automatically depending on the humidity reading. Has anyone had any luck doing this?

Home Assistant Spotify How-To (Video tutorial)

We are going to test and review two things today: Home Assistant and Spotify media player integration that allows you to control Spotify and Home Assistant Spotify connect add-on which allows you to use a Raspberry Pi to play your Spotify music on your audio system wirelessly.

The holidays are around the corner and we are mostly stuck at home. What's better than listen to some good music from Spotify? The only thing that I can think of is to automate and control Spotify from your Home Assistant, so we are going to do exactly that in the first half of this video. Moreover if you've got an old Hi-Fi or sound system with an AUX input and a raspberry pi it will be possible to stream music to your audio setup from your phone, tablet, or laptop using Spotify Connect. And I will show you how to do that in the second half of this video. So stay tuned till the end.
