Newbie here, Need to replace the dumb rocker switch with a smart switch in the garage

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 07:43 PM PST

    Hi all,

I have 4 tube lights each 40W controlled by only one switch in the garage, and each time, we go out with the car, we turn the lights off and get to the car driver seat in dark. so want to add the smart features to the switch so we could turn it off after we leave the garage /close the garage door. What ampere rated smart switch do I need to replace it with? Would it need to have a neutral wire capability? Any help is appreciated.

Home Assistant and Kasa Smart Plug (KP400) - Temperature based Activation

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 03:28 PM PST

I have my dogs heated water dish plugged into a KP400 right now. I would like to find a way to turn it off when the temperature is above 33F (>1C) and then on when below 33F (<0.9C) i'm not seeing a lot on how to do this.

Super new to home automation as I've never had the need, but with Christmas comes Christmas lights....

Are there any smart sensors that detect if an object is blocking the line of site of said sensor?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 10:37 PM PST

I would like to detect if, say a book ( for lack of a better example ) is in the direct line of site of a sensor. Once that book is moved out of the line of site, the sensor reports a different value. Do any z-wave or zigbeee sensors like this exist and what are they called if they do exist?

Humidity sensing bathroom fan vs automation

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 08:47 PM PST

I have this bathroom fan that has a built-in humidity sensor that automatically turns on the fan and adjusts the speed depending on the humidity in the room. The way it works is the first time it is powered on, it goes into humidity sensing mode. If you turn it off and back on again, it will switch on at full speed, for removing smells, etc.

The problem I have right now is that guests will turn on the fan for smells, then leave it on for long periods or they will turn it on and leave the house where it then runs forever. I also want to make sure that the fan is not left in the off position so that guests can't take a shower with the fan off and cause mold issues (big issue here in PNW).

I was planning to use automation to make sure the fan is not left in the "on" mode, or to make sure that it is put back into the humidity sensing mode. I also wanted to make sure the fan is turned off, when people lock up and leave the house. The problem though is that the toggle between modes by power interruption is causing issues. These are the potential solutions I came up with but I wanted to get other's opinions or ideas:

    1. Use a momentary decora switch - This was my original idea before any automation was done in the house. This way a person can't turn the fan off. It is either on full speed, or in humidity sensing mode. Most people would just think the fan is off when in humidity sensing mode since it only would come on right after a shower. Problem is I can't find this product because they are all momentary on, not momentary off (interrupt). I thought about maybe getting a garbage disposal switch and seeing if I can move the spring in it to switch its operation, but someone told me that might violate code (although I say you can still turn it off at the breaker).
    2. Z-wave switch - this was my next idea, but the problem is I can't know which mode the fan is in (on or humidity) because the toggle back and forth is not reliable and it doesn't have any way to check the state.
    3. Try and bypass the humidity sensor in the fan, install a Z-wave switch, install a Z-wave humidity sensor, and then use automation to turn the fan on when humid, and off if someone leaves it on for longer than X. I'm sure this could work but it would require a lot more expense and effort.
    4. Replace fan? Rather not go that route because it is an off-brand (utilitech) and I don't know I could find a replacement that fits the existing box / hole.

Advice for a new Insteon user?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 03:24 PM PST

I purchased a home over the summer that has Insteon lights set up in place. I believe it is the isy994i or something like that. For the most part they work well, only two of them don't work the way I'd prefer. Plus I'm just interested about all the stuff you can do with them in general. I am trying to get an account set up to match with what I have, but I am having trouble finding things like IP address or UUID. I got to a part where I can register my product but it is asking for the date of purchase, which obviously I don't know when that was because it was here before the previous seller.

Also, I am not very good with techy stuff, but I don't want to burden my husband too much because there is other stuff to work on in our home. I just thought it was easy enough for me to handle myself. Basically, I am trying to find out if there is a way to salvage what I have left from the previous owner, or is it better for me to just buy a new one?

Looking for a power sensing smart plug

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 10:11 PM PST

I'm looking for a power sensing smart plug that I can use to trigger another action when it senses power.

For example, when I turn my projector on it will sense the power being utilized at the AC outlet, and then I can have a rule to turn off the room lights then turn on and dim the accent lights. Then when I turn off the projector, it will sense this and I can turn off the accent lights and turn on the room lights.

Doorbells (without camera preferably) that have mobile app integration (such a push notifications)?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 08:52 AM PST

    Hi all,

I know the major competitors in this field are companies like Ring and Nest, but are there any simple-to-use doorbells that acts as a regular doorbell with sounds, but also sends a notification to your phone in case the sound isnt heard?

I live in the UK if that makes any difference.

    Thanks in advance!

3 pin Phoenix connector to male RCA?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 04:09 PM PST

I want to make sure I wire this up correctly.

I need to connect this matrix:

    Monoprice 6 zone matrix (https://downloads.monoprice.com/files/manuals/39261_Manual_200519.pdf)

--> to this 6 zone amplifier:

    Dayton Audio MA1260 (https://www.daytonaudio.com/images/resources/300-8150-dayton-audio-ma1260-user-manual-revision.pdf)

--> Is the best way to do this to just use this:

    https://goknight.com/atlas-sound-as2rca-1m-phx-male-rca-to-phoenix-connector-cable/

    Will this work?

    Thx!

    Open Cabinet Door

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 01:41 PM PST

    Looking for some advise.

I have a sparkling water system under my sink that provides sparkling water on demand out of a separate faucet in my kitchen. the system also cools the water. However, this creates heat and I have had some overheating issues where the unit shuts down.

I could cut some holes in my under sink cabinet (not my first choice) my other thought was to put a sensor on the sparkling water maker which vibrates and creates heat when used. When the sensor detects heat/vibration to then send a signal to another smart device that cracks open the kitchen cabinet for a set period of time, so the sparkling water system does not over heat and then closes itself.

I found a sensor i think would work: Aeotec Multisensor 6, Z-Wave Plus 6-in1 motion, temperature, humidity, light, UV, vibration sensor. but cannot find anything that would crack open a cabinet door.

New to IoT, looking for deadbolt suggestions

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 12:06 PM PST

New to IoT devices, but wanted to start with a deadbolt and work my way to other devices. I was looking into setting up z-wave with hubitat hub.

Anyway, im looking for suggestions for a deadbolt. Currently it seems like these are the top ones:

    • Yale Real Living
    • Schlage Connect
    • Level Touch
    • Alfred DB2 or 1
    • August Smart Lock Pro

Anyone have any experience with these? Any other suggestions or recommendations? It would be kind of nice to have bluetooth support as well, until i can get a hub setup.

    Sonoff tasmota 4ch failing

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 01:42 PM PST

Domoticz is controlling this relay via mqtt. Two times already in about 4 months the relay failed to switch off while by mqtt declaring it is switched off. Switch on/off one more time helps but this is annoying as it controls gas boiler and I notice this when it gets hot at home. Is it tasmota bug? Any ideas how to write script logic to avoid this? Switch off multiple times?

    Switch wiring sanity check, please.

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 11:03 AM PST

TLDR - I should request a separate neutral in the switch box for a future smart switch, right?

Contractors are at my house remodeling my mudroom. They are moving electric around and including a new switch box for some outside lighting. I noticed they had 12/2 Romex roughed into the box. In talking to the electrician, he was planning on making the white as hot/black. I asked him to include a neutral in the box for a smart switch. At first he said, "a neutral white is always included with Romex". I have him a funny look and after we got past that comment, he then said I could use the ground wire as a neutral since the white and the neutral ultimately go to the same bus bar in the panel. More funny looks later, he said he would pull another wire into the box.

2 questions. Am I crazy (about this situation specifically - no need to comment on the rest of my life!)? What is the best way to wire this - 12/2 Romex both in and out and just connect the 2 whites in the box until a smart switch is installed someday in the future OR 12/3 Romex using red and black for hot and what happens to the white then?

    Thanks!!!

    Dishwasher alert?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 06:27 PM PST

Okay guys, time to pick the brain!!

So I have a full size dishwasher, that connects to my sink because I lack a hookup in my house I am renting.

I normally run it on Autowash which can go anywhere from 45 minutes to 120 minutes depending on how the dishwasher senses and determines the needs.

I saw a video that showed using a sensor to determine if it the dishwasher was running

I believe it was a smart things door sensor set to detect the vibrations and if it no longer picked up the washing vibrations it determined the dishwasher to be done.

Has anyone ever done anything similar to this

Ways to control Gosund Lightbulbs with a physical switch?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 07:04 AM PST

    Hey there,

I have 3 Gosund light bulbs, that I currently use with the Smartlife App and with Google Home.

I would like to add a physical switch to the system. Using the switch should turn all the lights on and off, withouth me needing to get out my phone.

In general, are there other options to control the Gosund Lightbulbs except Smartlife, google home or alexa, like another app or ifttt?

    Conbee II alternative?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 04:14 AM PST

    Hi all!

In the recent days we have experienced several power outages as well as internet outages that lasts for days. And my Conbee II stick is not handling it well, and now looking for options.

Is there an option for a hub, that:

    • will work with many brands
    • does not require internet access
    • can be controlled thru apis via e.g node-red and home assistant
    • AND can handle sudden power outages, i.e will reestablish the network and keep working; as soon as devices report back in of course.
    • Have a company behind the product that is actively fixing bugs or in general gives a good impression of caring for the product?

    Backstory

I once had a philips hue, I like it because it could work offline, but disliked because little support for other devices.

And then got a Samsung SmartThings, I liked it because it supported more devices but would not work offline.

And then settled on the ConbeeII, I liked it because it handles being offline and many brands of devices without issues.

But the recent problems we have had, have exposed issues with it, where the network is dropped and will not come back if it is being powered off violently. I have tried all manners of troubleshooting, I have seen (many) others have same issues and it is claimed that is resolved in a later firmware (https://github.com/dresden-elektronik/deconz-rest-plugin/wiki/Network-lost-and-configuration-restore-does-not-help).

I have tried many things, I have a very recent firmware, where this supposedly is fixed. And while I can ssh to my server I cannot download the flashing utility nor any other firmware due to currently not having any internet to our apartment (without jumping thru hoops).

I am humiliated, as I wanted to make sure we could have a smart home that would work despite crazy stuff happening.

It is on me that I did not battle-test this stuff, I should have flipped the main fuse after buying this to make sure not only my servers etc can handle unexpected outages but that this darn usb-stick would not throw a fit (expected this the least).

    Thanks for reading :)

    Door Left Open Sensor

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 03:50 AM PST

In the rush of things, sometimes we forget to fully close our front or back door and recently our cat snuck out through the door (we found her!).

Besides now double/triple checking the door, are there any door sensors (smart or non-smart) that would play an alarm if the door is left open (i.e. for 5 seconds or more)? Suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

Orange Smart Home - fibaro gateway?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 06:57 AM PST

Orange Smart Home - fibaro gateway?

A few years back Orange introduced in my country (Romania) the Orange Smart Home ecosystem consisting of a "Central Device" (zwave gateway) and various fibaro zwave sensors. Since then it kind of faded away and now you can only find to buy one used, and the orange smart home app seems to be abandoned. As far as I know, the sensors weren't rebranded, they were actually fibaro, but the gateway didn't have a brand or name. My question is does anyone know if the gateway is actually compatible with the fibaro app? Is it possible to use it outside the apparently abandoned orange ecosystem?
