Trigger smart outlet when I leave/return to my desk?

    Posted: 17 May 2021 09:13 PM PDT

Is there a way to trigger a smart power outlet to turn a device on only when I'm seated at my computer? Then when I get up off the chair to walk away, it turns off the outlet immediately?

It's a bit of a silly use case, I know. But I have multiple computers running at my desk, and one of them gets notifications from various apps that aren't necessarily super sensitive in nature, but private enough that I'd prefer to avoid casual and accidental reading by anyone who might pass by my desk.

I know I can set a screensaver timeout on that computer, but it's not a computer I actually directly interact with the mouse all the time (but I do want to see it's screen at all times), so that isn't a good solution for my situation.

My computers are all Macs, and I use TP-Link smart power strips to feed power to all the monitors on my workstation. I use a Stream Deck with the Home Assistant plugin to manually turn them on and off, but would also like an automatic presence detection option that would allow me to shut off the screen automatically when I walk away (or turn it back on when I return).

    I have a feeling I'm overthinking/overengineering this, but I'm curious if there's a clever solution to this?

Recommend open close sensor NOT aeotec

    Posted: 17 May 2021 05:28 PM PDT

Looking for a recommendation for an open close sensor for my front door.

I had a smartthings hub + sensor for years, and recently repaced the smartthings hub with an aeotec. The experience so far has been crappy and I'd like to start from scratch.

    1. Smartthings open close sensor would not link to aeotec hub. Tried multiple times. Reached out to aeotec, that did not help.
    2. Purchased a new aeotec open close sensor from amazon. Couldn't get that to link to Aeotec hub either. Per the reviews/complaints on Amazon about this sensor, it seems as if I'm not the only one with this problem. Again, tried to reach out to Aeotec customer service and found them unhelpful.

Enough, I'd like to start over from scratch.
At this point I'm interested in (1) open close sensor for front door and for sliding glass door (2) being able to connect with my hue hub, e.g, to turn on lights when front door is opened. Would be grateful for any suggestions.

Track appliance usage with outlet monitor

    Posted: 17 May 2021 08:34 PM PDT

I have a sump pump and dehumidifier that I want to track the usage on to see how often they run. Is there a recommended outlet usage monitor for something like this? Every single one I've looked at has the ability to turn off/on remotely which I don't care for. I also want to make sure the outlet remains hot all the time. I definitely don't want to lose WiFi and have that cause the outlet monitor to shut off and ultimately cause my sump pump to not run.

Any recommendations? I have two Amazon Smart Plugs that I use for lights and I like that I can see the energy usage by day. I was thinking of getting two more of those, but would prefer ones that can't be turned off or on and are usage monitoring only.

How do I do this, without buying a heap of things not needed or won’t work? Blinds, Lights, TV and more..

    Posted: 18 May 2021 12:13 AM PDT

Hi there. I am completely new to home automation/smart home apart from reading and looking... our home has zero smarts apart fromGoogle Nest Mini and a Sony Android TV (and a few android boxes to smarten the other 2 TVs).

Now what I would love,to start with, is when I go downstairs in the morning, the roller blinds go up, the TV turns on, the kitchen lights turn on and at Daylight colour.

And this happens when I say Hey Google good morning or I pass a sensor or what ever.

3 people in the family so it needs to be able to work auto, buttons for slights, controls for blinds etc, not just an automatic setting of course.

I can think of a heap more things, lights go from daylight (white light) to warm light as the night goes on (slowly change would be good). Depending the weather (hot sun) on one blind at the door opens, the others stay down for hours later when sun is up higher then they go up. Lights in kitchen and stairs go half brightness in the middle of the night when someone wakes to go to the fridge for a drink... so the lights don't dazzle you.

That's just off the top of my head, prob lots more can be done.

But but but, I just don't know where to start. I don't want to buy smart light bulbs and find I should buy smart switches instead. Don't want to buy smart blinds and find all I can do is say Open or Close and nothing else. There's so many brands and products and some work with each other some don't, some work with Google, Alexa, subscribe to services .... it's just all too hard. Help!

Globe home app- no AP option

    Posted: 17 May 2021 07:34 PM PDT

Been trying to connect my outdoor lights to a globe outdoor plug. My router doesn't have separate 2.4 and 5 GHz options that I can choose from. Was reading online that I should try and connect using AP mode but I don't see this option anywhere is my app (version 1.2.7)

Anyone able to guide me through what I'm missing please? Thanks

Dimmers “quantizing” when LEDs fade to black

    Posted: 17 May 2021 09:21 AM PDT

    Good morning all.

I'm working up a HA plan for my new home under construction. The house will have about 120 LED down lights for the primary lighting.

I am testing a couple of options for LEDs and dimmers. Right now I have the WAC Ion 2-inch and 4-inch luminaires on my test bench. I have tried them with a Brilliant control and with an Inovelli Red Dimmer.

With both lights on either switch, the LED fade out is "quantized" — rather than a smooth fade to black, the dimming appears to change by noticeable increments in the final moments. It's clearly visible and pretty annoying. I don't want to install a ton of these lights and switches and then see that strobing effect every time I turn off the lights.

I'm going to try a Lutron RA2 Select dimmer and a more expensive Nora LED to see if those work better, but I would certainly appreciate any suggestions from the channel.

    Thanks!

Doing away with a 4-Way Set Up

    Posted: 17 May 2021 08:34 PM PDT

Currently in my living room, there are three switches that control the ceiling lights. I don't see the need for all of those switches and want to cover up two of the three and install a single 2-way smart dimmer.

Am I free to cap off and cover the two I don't want, or will I need to switch a specific one, and if so how would I determine the correct switch?

I Need Help With My HDMI Matrix Setup!!

    Posted: 17 May 2021 12:51 PM PDT

I Need Help With My HDMI Matrix Setup!!

    Hello,

I recently purchased a 4x4 HDMI matrix to hook up 4 devices of mine to 3 of my monitors. Devices range from Macbook, PS4, Xbox, etc. The issue is that the unit I purchased doesn't have an auto-switching feature. This means that I still need to physically change the inputs of the monitor via the monitor OSD's. I need a solution for this to work, I am going to return the unit and hopefully find a better solution. Would it be possible to use a 4x2 HDMI matrix into a 1x2 HDMI splitter so I can have 3 outputs and 4 inputs?

    - Thank You, all help is appreciated.

EDIT: This is the current HDMI Matrix I am using: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0823L9NPX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

EDIT2: I think I got it all to work with the use of Monitor Profile Switcher and changing to an empty input on the matrix for any monitor in question. Added a picture to help clarify.

    DIY Wifi Mesh?

    Posted: 17 May 2021 12:21 PM PDT

The wifi in my house has limited range. Sometimes I can't reach Home Assistant on my phone, sometimes the Wifi TVs fall off the network, etc. Let's just say "management" wants me to improve network connectivity first before I can continue building out our home automations.

I have a decent router but it is limited by the amount of coverage I need throughout the house as well as it's physical location. I can't downsize the house, unfortunately, and I will need to run ethernet cables before I can move it's location (because the internet line comes into the basement).

So ... Has anyone deployed a DIY wifi mesh? Or is everyone using a Unity system?

Looking at devices like this, PoE from a central switch, to widen range. Just some thoughts b/c I'm also looking to utilize PoE security cameras in the near future so I'm trying to decide on how many ports I will need on the switch.

And yes, running ethernet all over the house will eventually happen but I will still have lots of Wifi clients to contend with (my TVs, for example, don't have ethernet ports, nor do our cell phones). And covering 3 stories with ethernet isn't an easy task.

    Thoughts? Suggestions?

Does anyone have recommendations for a robot mop? Looking at the Braava Jet M6 - open to suggestions.

    Posted: 17 May 2021 06:38 PM PDT

I've been looking to purchase one for the past couple of years, but every time I look into it I always decide against it after researching it a bit. It just seems like there aren't many good options out there. The Braava Jet M6 is the one it always comes down to, and despite having an overall high rating for its reviews, the bad reviews have always been enough to make me decide against it. I think my main concerns for it are the reviews that mention how it doesn't map well and leaves streaks. Also, one of the reviews I read mentioned having Saltillo tile and that it doesn't work well on it because it thinks its a ledge, so it'll keep stopping. The tile I'd be using it on isn't Saltillo, but it does have a somewhat bumpy texture, so I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience in that regard. With that being said, if anyone has other recommendations please let me know. I know this might limit my options, but if possible I'd prefer to have it only be a mop rather than a vacuum and mop. From what I've read I feel like the focus tends to be more on the function of the vacuum than the mop, but if you do have a 2 in 1 and you feel like the mop function is just as good that'll work, too. Thanks!

    Nest thermostat

    Posted: 17 May 2021 01:18 PM PDT

Need help! My nest thermostat has been low on power all day and has now turned off. Someone on the smart home subreddit told me it has to do with not having a c wire. I checked and I do not have one. Is there anyway I can get one and is it easy and cheap to do? I really want to keep this thermostat, especially since ive already spent good money on it. Im asking you guys cause I normally get faster replies on here

    Newbie looking for help.

    Posted: 17 May 2021 12:11 PM PDT

So I just bought a house and I close early next month. The house has pretty much everything I wanted minus the smart home features which I figured I could do myself. I am fairly good with tech stuff and currently enrolled in college working towards an IT degree.

My question is where do I start?

I know I want a tablet on the wall that controls the house. I have seen those posts with the tablets and I know that's what I want. But what tablet?

Should I stick with all the items being the same brand or mix/match based on sales? Like should my lights all be Phillips Hue because it will be easier to use with the bridge?

I know it can get extremely pricey dealing with smart home items. I'm looking to start with the front door lock, garage door opener, a couple outside cameras, thermostats and some lights on the inside. Maybe just the living room with the color sync on the tv.

    Any help is appreciated. Thanks

[Suggestions] Replaced a NUVO system with a VSSL a.6 What would you do with the left over ethernet?

    Posted: 17 May 2021 03:17 PM PDT

    Hi All,

I am the new happy owner of a VSSL a.6. It solved everything I was looking for. Now I am left with 6 Ethernet runs from the old Nuvo Keypads. Are there any neat applications you have seen for in-wall POE.

The only real thought I had was to B=buy some inwall Access points for weaker wifi areas (don't really have any). I know some people do wall mounted Nest Hubs. Which might be cool too.

I primarily am android/Google so don't have a need or desire for amazon/Apple ecosystem.

    Hue rhythm similar to Wiz.

    Posted: 17 May 2021 03:11 PM PDT

I bought Wiz lights for the rhythms, but it simply doesn't work. I have groups of about 10 down lights and when a color change comes about 8 will work, a different 8 each time. The concept is great. I have daylight until 6pm then have them switch to warm. Also, if I just turn them on from the switch at say 7, they know to be warm color. Once again maybe 8 of 10 if lucky. Can Hue do this? I know I can turn of a hue at a specific time and color, but can I have a schedule that says if I turn of the switch it will go to the desired color? Any solutions or advice on Hue or even getting Wiz to work, they are 1/3 the price.

    USB power in wall?

    Posted: 17 May 2021 02:30 PM PDT

I'm trying to mount a USB smart device to my wall preferably without an ugly cord hanging down. I want to mount it about eye level, and there is an outlet on the wall near the floor below it. Best I've come to with is swap the outlet for one with USB, plug in the cable and immediately run it back into the wall and up to the device. This works, but the outlet is on otherwise bare and exposed wall, so aesthetically I'd rather not have the random cable sticking out and back into the wall. Is the a code compliant way to get USB power entirely inside the wall?
