Connecting your PC to Home Assistant with IOTLinkt

Connecting your PC to Home Assistant with IOTLinkt

    Hey all,

It was a pain in the ass for me to find, set up and configure, so I thought I'd share this in Reddit if only for SEO sake for other folks to discover.

Connecting your windows 10 to your Home Assistant is possible with https://iotlink.gitlab.io/ and MQTT:

    Rough steps outline:

    1. Install MQTT broker on HA (default config is fine)
    2. Install MQTT integration in HA
    3. Install IOT link (as an administrator), and edit it's config file, add the username/password of your HA user, and the IP address of the HA MQTT broker
    4. Things should be connected. You can test this with MQTT explorer, by using the above IP/credentials in MQTT explorer, thou should see the topic get populated with a bunch of info about your PC
    5. Add whatever sensors/scripts you'd like to HA. It can look like this:

    https://community.home-assistant.io/t/iot-link-full-featured-service-for-connecting-devices-with-iot-enabled-services-using-mqtt/120856

A lot of the configs are mentioned here:
    https://gitlab.com/iotlink/iotlink/-/wikis/Integrations/Home-Assistant

If you'd like to wake/turn on your windows 10 from HA as well, add

    wake_on_lan:

To your configuration.yaml and then use the script from the above link by changing the MAC address of your network adapter (of me it was my Ethernet ports mac address)

I have multiple of these outlets- How do I use them ?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 07:24 AM PDT

I have been in my 2010 constructed house for about 7 years and I have seen some blank faceplates in my bedroom, study and the book leading to the patio.

Since I was stuck at home, I opened them up and they had these wires.

    https://imgur.com/a/9z6tFDz

The blue ones seem to be low voltage speaker wires, the pink one is similar to my other hard wired CAT5E wires. I don't see any power cables though.

On the second Pic, I discovered that two of the speaker wires lead to my patio allowing me to have two speakers there. I don't know where the other two lead to.

On my bedroom there is another blank plate with similar wires and two blank plates on the ceiling which I assume is for speakers again.

I am most curious about how to power the speakers- Are these supposed to be powered by a PoE type device ? Also, I see that there are four sets of speaker wires but only two speaker locations in both my bedroom and patio, what are the other wires supposed to be used for ?

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

    Temperature monitor for freezer?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 04:59 PM PDT

Trying to get started with home monitoring, I was hoping for something to watch my freezer temperature to alert me if there's a problem. Any ideas, pointers, recommendations?

    • All I really found so far is SensorPush, but it looks like you need their brand of hub and it needs to be within ten feet. This is a basement so it would be an easier sell if the hub could also run a water detector or CO monitor, but they're just temperature. Any other ideas?

    Use CAT5 to route DC (12v 2A)

    Posted: 04 May 2020 04:47 PM PDT

    Background - https://www.reddit.com/r/homeautomation/comments/gdciof/i_have_multiple_of_these_outlets_how_do_i_use_them/

My previous post generated a ton of awesome replies. I figured I'd start with a in-wall amplifier with Bluetooth just to power my outdoor speakers. I went for this one - Pyle Bluetooth Receiver - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B010U5EGKE

Now looking at the picture (and reviews), I don't think the dc poweradapter (12v, 2000mA) will reach the location where the outlet will be located.

I figured instead of buying a longer cable, I could use the CAT5 cable itself. It looks like PoE is typically 12x1A(12W).

Considering there is no actual PoE device on either side, can I use an injector to send 24W through the CAT5 and thereby have a clean install with no unsightly power brick?

    Ceiling Fan and Smart Bulbs

    Posted: 04 May 2020 03:51 PM PDT

I tried searching for an answer but was unable to find it, if I have a ceiling fan with lights that the wall switch is always on, but utilize the pull string for the lights to turn them off and on, will the pull string being used effect the connection of the bulbs the same way using the wall switch would? Because my boyfriend is pretty set against using the voice commands, and will continue to use the string.

    Dimmest smart bulbs?

    Posted: 05 May 2020 12:09 AM PDT

I ordered two yeelights but accidentally got the white ones when I wanted the RGB ones, so I'm going to return them.

My issue is, these lights don't get very dim. I put them in my ceiling fixture and was hoping I could use the dim setting to replace my lamp, but it's just nowhere close. Would another brand (such has Lifx) provide better dimming abilities? Or do I have to accept it and just get the RGB yeelights? Help me out!

Couldn't decide on a smart switch, decided to go with the Inovelli lineup

    Posted: 04 May 2020 02:56 PM PDT

Was going back and forth between several different switch choices, GE, Homeseer, etc. After doing tons of research on here and YouTube and blogs, I started to see the Inovelli brand popping up and dug into their product. They have a simplistic approach to describing their products clearly so that there is no confusion on which one suits the application, aesthetics are top-notch, and transparency of the products design and production. But what stood out, is how involved the CEO is, especially here on Reddit, on fielding questions and taking input from the consumers. Today with their May the Fourth sale going on, I just couldn't pass it up. Looking forward to diving headfirst into a new hobby. Hubitat ordered and Hue lighting as well!

Garage Door Opener wifi unit: on/off vs. open/closed - any way to change designation?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 03:57 PM PDT

    Hi all -

I installed this eWeLink wifi garage door opener https://www.amazon.com/EACHEN-Control-Openers-Inching-Compatible/dp/B07CWXC489 on my automatic gate to my property. It basically triggers a button press which cycles the gate to either start opening, stop, start closing, stop, etc. It also has a magnetic reed switch will will report if the contacts on the gate latch are open are closed. It has its own mobile app, and works with Alexa and Google Home, and I have it all set up with each platform.

The issue I'm having is that the terminology is all "off" or "on", even when using Alexa or Google Home. Instead of asking "Alexa, is the gate open?", I have to ask "Alexa, is the gate on?"... Or, "Alexa, turn off the gate" to mean 'close the gate'.

Anyone run into that before, and if so how did you fix it (if at all)?

    Thanks,

Automating a chicken coop door to open for a novice?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 07:25 PM PDT

Literally no automation in our house, I just lurk here admiring everything you guys do. I don't understand half of it. I have a MacBook, I can write basic python and java. There's an electrical outlet on the side of my house about 10 feet from the coop. To manually open the coop, as we currently do, you pull a rod horizontal to the ground about 8 inches. I'm not sure even where I would start.

Problems with Smartthings (and Google Assistant)

    Posted: 04 May 2020 11:21 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

    my system started relatively simple.
At first, I only had a single Philips Hue bridge, a few Hue bulbs and some Google Homes to control everything by voice. All the Google Home devices are in a single "virtual" home in the G-Assistant app.
Over time it began to grow so that a second bridge was needed. As G-Assistant can only accept one account (and therefore only one bridge) I created a second account for the second bridge and added both to G-Assistant - no success. At that point I decided that a Samsung Smartthings hub would be a good addition to my homeautomation setup as I also had some upcoming extensions in mind. The idea was that it would be able to connect to multiple bridges at once.

So I got myself the Smartthing hub, connected both Hue Bridges according to the manual and set up the connection between IFTTT, Smartthings and G-Assistant/Home. The G-Assistant now says that the devices I can see in the Google Home App are connected via Smartthings. Controling everything directly from the manufacturer app or even the Smartthings app works mostly (see 1.). But this is where my problems began.

    1. Even though both bridges appear as connected, most of the devices in Smartthings seem to be offline. When I select a specific device in the Smartthings App it loads up the details page and allows me to control it. That't not possible from the Smartthings home-screen.
    2. I want Google Assistant to use the rooms in Smartthings to control the different lamps/switches/smart-plugs. For some reason, this won't work. Google will say it has done what I've asked it to do (like turning on all devices in a specific room), but nothing happens.
    3. I can control a specific device by calling it by its designated name (e.g. "Hue Iris 1"). However, when I want to change the color of aforementioned device, the color...behaves weird. When I tell it to switch the color to yellow it becomes orange. Turqoise becomes light green. Pink becomes beige-orangeish. You get the point.

The only things that work are controlling the devices manually from the Smartthings app or using the dedicated Hue accounts/Apps.

What can I do so that it works properly? Do you have any ideas what I could try?

    Thanks in advance.

    Openhab migration to Home Assistant

    Posted: 04 May 2020 09:04 AM PDT

I've setup OpenHAB for Alarm, weather, control garage doors, Alexa, TVs, Recievers and written some rules in RuleDSL. My son is using HA and I am interested to move possibly but not really unhappy where I am. Main thing that intrigues me is it seems like there are a lot of places where HA has community presence.

I'd like to hear from those that have migrated either from or to HA on how they made the migration and how it worked out. Specifically if anyone used the OH Python rules engine if they were easier to migrate to HA.
    Thanks

Affordable wifi buttons that do not require a hub or external device?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 08:32 AM PDT

I've been looking for a wifi button that doesn't require a hub , but the only solution I've found is to get a no longer produced Amazon dash button, building my own DIY buttons or the flic 2* button.

The flic 2 button shows up a lot whenever I search for wifi smart button, but from what I can tell it's actually a bluetooth button that requires either a phone or a hub.

The use case for this is silly. I need a wifi button to put in a friends house (separate), so that when he clicks on it, it turns on a bulb in my room. I rather not also send him a hub along with 1 button as well. I also it rather not be a bluetooth button that requires a phone in range. I know I have a weird usecase so that a product I require won't exist as-is, but I was wondering if there's anything that I can rig to do something similar.

What options do we have for automating a house on Mars?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 02:54 PM PDT

I am participating in the Mars City State Design Competition organized by The Mars Society by the end of June 2020. I've partnered up with several engineers and so far we made quite a few interesting designs. I'm thinking ahead and I want to come up with ideas on how the regolith habitat can benefit from automation. Let me know what are your thoughts.

    Heater control reccomendations

    Posted: 04 May 2020 02:41 PM PDT

Hi, I am new to this and do not have anything automated at the moment.

I'd like to start with controlling a heater so that I can: -schedule it to be on just before I wake up

-control the temp from off site

-turn it on from off site.

I started looking into the tplink hs100 but I was unable to figure out how to get an ambient room temp reading and if it would do what I am after. I am located in Sydney, Australia 🇦🇺.

    Any suggestions?

Where do you buy in bulk?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 10:38 AM PDT

I've been searching, and I'm starting to think it's not a thing unless you're running a business. I need to buy 12 switches (Lutron Caseta). I get charging $50 when you buy one, but I feel like 10+ there should be some bulk discount.

    Automation Documentation

    Posted: 04 May 2020 06:22 AM PDT

Hello all. I wanted to know what people are doing - if anything - to document their home automation system considering the "what happens if you get hit by a bus" scenario. That is, do you have enough documentation in place to assist loved ones in figuring things out.

If you are documenting, how did you go about laying it out?

Looking for suggestions or alternate ways to get them configured for my local WiFi.

I have other devices connected to the network just fine, but first time with the Leviton gear.

Anyone have the Inovelli Ilumin bulbs?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 11:52 AM PDT

I need a couple more smart bulbs and I am not interested in LIFX anymore, I have been less than satisfied with them for the price.

Last week I ordered up a new Inovelli dimmer and saw they now offer smart bulbs, as a bonus it seems they will function in tandem with an Inovelli switch, which is pretty awesome for my purposes. I would be using it in a system that currently uses Smartthings and Google Home.

Does anyone have anything to say about Ilumin bulbs?

Troubleshooting 2 gang Caseta dimmer installation

    Posted: 04 May 2020 10:58 AM PDT

Hey all, I'm running into trouble installing 2 Lutron Caseta dimmers (6WCL) in the same box.

My wiring is like this: https://www.do-it-yourself-help.com/images/2-light-switch-wiring-diagram.gif

I tried installing it every conceivable way I could, but one of the lights doesn't work. It stays on constantly, very dim. Doesn't get brighter when i turn it on, and doesn't turn off when I turn it off. Always the "right" side of the circuit, no matter which switch I put there.

The weird thing is, when i leave the old analog switch in the circuit, it works normally along side the smart switch.

I have another 2 gang caseta switch in my house with no netural wires, and it works normally.

Am I missing something obvious here?

    Thanks for your insight.

What is the full list of Smart TV commands for Google Home?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 10:39 AM PDT

There's this list that says "some of the commands" https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS00078932/

And this list which says "Below you will find what functions are available ", suggesting it is an exhaustive list? https://www.samsung.com/au/support/tv-audio-video/google-home-voice-commands-for-samsung-tvs/

Wireless humidity sensor? (Preferably Z Wave or Zigbee)

    Posted: 04 May 2020 10:35 AM PDT

I need to easily monitor/ log/trend the humidity in my attic. I already have some Smart Things sensors (and obviously a SmartThings hub), but they don't do humidity.

Any recommendations on something reliable and easy to use? I'm considering Wireless Sensor Tags, but also see SensorPush.

Are there Z wave or Zigbee devices with a decent interface and logging capabilities?
