Open source software that uses Google Assistant voice control and runs on an Synology NAS Posted: 05 May 2020 11:55 PM PDT I have a Synology DS215J NAS, a couple of Google Nest Hubs, and a bunch of Haodeng RGB dimming bulbs from Amazon. I would like to go a bit deeper into HA than the Google devices will allow, which I believe means installing software onto a dedicated device. My NAS is powered on 24/7 so it makes sense to use that. Googling points me in two directions plus some minor ones. Home Assistant looks ideal but there's a US$5 per month fee for the Google voice integration, which also means using the cloud. OpenHAB is a local alternative which seems to include Google voice for free, but looks a bit too complex for me to enjoy, I much prefer no-code UI solutions. There are a couple of hardware solutions that Google suggests, like Wink or Samsung, but I'm reluctant to buy new hardware when what I have should do the job. I'm grateful for any advice! Posted: 05 May 2020 03:08 PM PDT Let me expound. I have a young but growing family. I enjoy using IoT devices and what not. I have just one Google Home Mini speaker that controls everything (currently just light switches, thermostat, and a TV) via voice. I have long thought that as my family grows and moves into a bigger home, I'd like to put in more devices, maybe even in kids rooms: lights, switches, TVs, garage door, etc. with several speakers to cover the home. So what stops a child, for example, from speaking to a google home in one area of a house and instructs it to turn off a TV that someone else is watching? Or turning on/off lights to prank/annoy someone else? Are there any real guards against this or is it just a side effect of smart devices? Those that already face this, do you just have a trust or honor system in lieu of something technical? [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 May 2020 05:00 PM PDT Hi guys, I'm looking for a power bar that my colleagues and I can access remotely from a laptop at either home or work. I don't necessarily need control of each outlet but that might be a nice feature. I found this one in a similar thread https://www.amazon.ca/Web-Power-Switch-Pro-Model/dp/B0765NCB2L I intend to use this as an emergency button for a test rig which will be remotely monitored over a web interface. If we see something concerning in the test data, I want to be able to remotely access this power bar to cut power to the test rig and prevent damage to the equipment. Does anyone have experience with either this model or a similar product? What were some of the pros and cons of your experience? Is this a suitable device for my application? [link] [comments]
Refurbished deebot 930 or new deebot 910 Posted: 05 May 2020 08:24 PM PDT so amazon has a refurbished Ecovacs deebot 930 for $215 or should I just get a brand new deebot 910 for $200? i heard the mopping feature on the 930 isnt that great? [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 May 2020 08:19 PM PDT i may have gone overboard on that analogy. hi! i'm semi-tech savvy, but new to home autism in general. i have both abode and homekit (but lean abode). as i've been researching making a dumb washing machine, without having to learn coding and make a raspberry pi, the most likely option i'm seeing is a smart plug that goes between the appliance and the wall, and notifies on volt-amperage-electrical-word up, and then notifies on watts-ohms-same=electrical word down. is this doable within abode? if so, what accessory(ies) would i need? thank you! ultimately, i just want to know when these machines are done with a push notification. thank you in advance! Need doorbell or something that makes a "ding dong" when it gets power Posted: 05 May 2020 04:28 PM PDT I looked on Amazon for a while and even ordered a doorbell, but it seems I can't find one that makes it's noise when it gets power. My goal is to make a motion notification system, power on a smart plug with the device plugged in. I've tried using Sonos system but it's not reliable and sometimes plays my last music on it. I'm about to find an old AM radio lol, unless someone has a product? [link] [comments]

Posted: 05 May 2020 02:07 PM PDT Hi, I need some lights for my corridor. It's kinda long and I don't have plugs for it. I'm searching something that's not too bulky and won't need batteries. The one with usb is enough. Let me know, Thanks! [link] [comments]
easiest way to get zwave into your backyard? Posted: 05 May 2020 04:26 PM PDT I have a pool shed with electric in my backyard, which I added a zwave switch to. Before I wired it in, I tested a battery powered motion sensor and it paired no problem, so I figured I was good to go. After the switch failed to pair, I tried another motion sensor and it would not pair either. not sure how the first one paired so easily. I guess I could pull the switch out of the shed.. temporarily wire it inside, pair it, and move it back outside, but that still may not work as there may be a range issue. someone suggested it may be because the nearest zwave device is a battery powered window sensor on the back of the house, and these behave differently than powered devices. If that is true, I was considering adding this to the rear wall of the house: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M6CKJXC/ if it makes no difference if battery operated or not, I was thinking to add this to a fence pole half way to the pool shed: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KP4T3MS/ I was also thinking it may be possible to add a dedicated server in the pool shed, with another zwave usb stick, and somehow have that communicate back to the main home assistant hub. problem there is, I don't know how that would work, and I would really like to put the switch for the shed, and the switch for the spotlights in my backyard in a group, and they would then be on different home assistant servers. how have you all handled getting zwave to reach far distances? Posted: 05 May 2020 02:09 PM PDT If you are using CQC how's it been working for you? Did any of you switch from Homeseer? I currently use Home Seer (I have an HS3 Pro install, the HS4 upgrade which is yet to be seen). I love the flexibility of HomeSeer but it's just lacking in some areas, and it crashes sometimes (and still doesn't run as a service otherwise I'd just have Netwrix service monitor on it). I really want something on the level of Control4 (and am willing to pay the costs of such a system) I just do not want to have to go through a dealer. [link] [comments]
Zigbee, Z-Wave, SmartThings, oh my! Someone break it down for me, please? Posted: 05 May 2020 07:10 AM PDT So, I actually do industrial automation for a living and somehow have never gotten into doing any home automation. Anyway, we've decided to get with the times and do something. I know basically nothing except that Zigbee and Z-wave exist and are what small devices talk and that Google products have neither, Amazon hubs have Zigbee, and my garage door has Z-wave. We have had an echo dot for a while and while the kids love getting her play the same 5 songs over and over, I'm generally unimpressed. We've especially had issues with device "ownership" not being able to be shared by two accounts (are all the devs single, or perhaps so controlling they share a single amazon account with their SO?). Are their other popular non-TCP/non-bluetooth protocols for devices I should be considering? Is there some proven really good setup with Nest smart speaker things (I'm about done with Alexa and we're Pixel phone people anyway). Our goals are:
EDIT: Well, I fell down the rabbit hole quick. Apparently I'm now trying to integrate IPDatatel's wired BAT to a SmartThings hub that arrives on Thursday and I'm trying to figure out a good garage door retrofit so I can monitor the break beam when the door is open. EDIT2: So there is Thread from Google and WeMo protocols to compete with Zigbee and Z-Wave. Awesome, more protocols... Also, is Thread the same as Weave or what? [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 May 2020 08:29 AM PDT Hola. I'm looking to invest in Smart bulbs, but I can't find many options for quality bulbs in bulk. It's a shame because I am trying to buy 9 Smartbulbs, but don't want to pay for them individually (I feel like I can save money by buying in bulk) Does anyone have any recommendations for QUALITY smart bulbs (white & color) that you can buy in bulk? Thank you! [link] [comments]
Keyless Door Entry for Apartment in US? Posted: 05 May 2020 12:01 PM PDT I've been looking into keyless entry systems for my apartment, but haven't been able to find anything for the US. I haven't been to my apartment yet (no tours because of coronavirus) but it seems it's an intercom system to get into the front door, so I would need something to intercept that signal. I've seen Homeit and Nuki, but unless I'm mistaken, they seem to be EU only. Then there's Nello, but I think they're out of business. Does anyone have any recommendations? [link] [comments]

Anyone had any experience using both Somfy and ScreenLine blinds in the same setup? Posted: 05 May 2020 11:32 AM PDT Hi Guys, First post here and my first proper look into the world of home automation, understand this might be quite a specific request! Looking for some advice in regards to blind automation, specifically regarding Somfy and ScreenLine. A friend of mine has both Somfy and Screenline blinds in their house and was looking into the possibility of having both controlled with one remote / dedicated interface? Have seen a few projects implementing the Rasbpberry Pi for the Somfy, I have a fair amount of experience of using Raspberry Pi's and Arduino's so would be fairly comfortable setting something like this up. The issue comes when looking into implementations with ScreenLine as there doesn't seem to be many resources regarding this! Have looked into this a bit and I understand they both use different frequencies which would be the first hurdle, Somfy using 433.42Mhz and ScreenLine using 433.92Mhz. Have also seen a few references to ScreenLine using a rolling code but cannot confirm this 100%, although it seems highly likely. The guy who installed the ScreenLine blinds suggested a Broadlink device may work, admittedly never testing this himself, however I then was reading this probably wouldn't be compatible with the Somfy blind. My main question is whether anyone has any experiencing using ScreenLine blinds and implementing these into a basic automation system? Many thanks in advance, any direction would be greatly appreciated, resources for ScreenLine seem to be quite scarce! Hope all the above makes sense! [link] [comments]

Planning HA for a new (to us) home Posted: 05 May 2020 08:19 AM PDT We are in the process of buying a new home, and should have a fair bit of time overlap with our current living arrangements (if all goes well). We both want ethernet throughout the house. We also know that we want to paint the entire interior before moving in, so we have an opportunity to cut as many holes in the walls as we want. Today, there's no ethernet in the home, only a lot of coax and RJ-11, plus an old M&S intercom system. So, I'm starting the plan for before move in to fully wire up the home. I am working on a plan for wiring for network, but want to future proof our options so we don't need to re-open the walls again. We want to rip out that intercom system. Initially there won't be anything to replace it, but longer term I do want to install a HA display in each room. So my thought is to replace the existing intercom with a empty 3-gang box, and put a blanking plate over it after paint. The question comes is wiring. Since I don't really have in mind a way to actually build the displays, I'm not sure of how to wire it. My instinct is to run CAT-6 to the box, and along side it an 18 gauge 4 conductor wire. That way, I can provide a 24 volt power supply to the box (to power a screen via DC/DC converter) and have wired network. With that, I should have flexibility to run a Raspberry Pi with a 7 inch display if I wanted to. [link] [comments]
Zigbee vs Z-Wave motion sensor response time Posted: 05 May 2020 07:58 AM PDT Hello Folks, Has anyone done a comprehensive test to figure which type of motion sensors respond faster for lighting automations? I have read that zigbee sensors are usually faster, but wondering if it's a huge difference. Are Z-Wave motion sensors noticeably slower for lighting automations? I am starting to plan out my smart home, and as of now, I have decided to with Z-Wave light switches. I am researching which protocol would be better for sensors Appreciate all of your help [link] [comments]
