Wink going subscription only as of May 13, 2020

    Posted: 06 May 2020 01:03 PM PDT

With WINK going to subscription and their ultimate demise, what is the best open source home automation platform to use with raspberry pi.

    Posted: 06 May 2020 05:43 PM PDT

From an open source and coding standpoint, I'm a total noob but I can google research with the best of them. I'm looking for a platform that can control lights, motion sensors, locks, garage doors, ecobee, etc. I have Z-wave and some older zigbee so I know I'll need a stick. I also use my phone for geo-fencing to adjust lights, thermostat, etc.

Looking for something easy to learn, easy to code, with a pretty mobile app or control center. Any links or tips are especially appreciated!

I was looking at Flume, but it seems like Flume is not compatible with Sensus iPerl water meter. Anyone know any devices that will work with the Sensus water meter?

Inovelli Red Series 3-Way with Smart Bulbs - Has Anyone Tried This?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 03:16 PM PDT

I have a 3-way switch with colored z-wave bulbs in the sockets. In order to increase the usability, I would like the switches to be able to control the bulbs too. I know the Inovelli Red Series has the capability of being used with smart bulbs, and can be used as a 3-Way switch. But I was wondering if anyone had used the Red Series, in conjunction with a GE Add-On switch (or a dumb switch) and smart bulbs. I just want to make sure that the GE Add-On switch would not be able to cut power to my bulbs in a 3-way configuration when using the Inovelli Red as the primary switch.

If anyone has tried this before, please let me know your results. Thanks.

Edit: My configuration is this one, left side of image.

Is wiz a reasonable replacement for wink?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 04:12 PM PDT

I am looking for something that will work offline so companies like wink can't ransoms me. I believe wiz is a sister company of Philip and Phillip hub works without a internet connection so it is also safe to assumed that wiz will work offline too ?

Is there a hub besides wink that lets you rename lights?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 04:00 PM PDT

The thing I like and the only reason why I still use my wink hub is that I can say stuff like "turn on master bedroom" instead of the convoluted way my smart bulb manufacture app makes me as well as have lights turn on at dusk and away mode where random lights turn on to make it look I am home.

What hub besides wink will let me say "turn on master bedroom" to google assistant and turn on my bedroom lights?

Android app for wall tablet to connect to a SIP intercom

Android app for wall tablet to connect to a SIP intercom

    Dahua VTO4202F-P

    Hello,

I use Home Assistant for my Home Automation software. I bought a Dahua VTO4202F-P intercom and want to integrate it into my smart setup. Since Home Assistant doesn't have a solution for SIP Intercom communication, I thought about having some android app in my wall panel tablets so that I can communicate with the intercom.

I try to search but no results, I even tried their app called gDMSS HD, I can connect to the intercom but cannot receive call, the maximum I can get with that app is having a notification but anyways isn't working with me.

    Switching from wink

    Posted: 06 May 2020 03:30 PM PDT

With the news that wink is starting to charge I have decided to leave them as I'm not paying for their not great service. It sucks as I'm laid off and don't really have the money to replace them for either SmartThings, Hubitat or something else.

But I'm going to start researching and see what's better for me for when I buy the hub.

I enjoy the robots they have and mainly use it as a hub for google home to voice control the bulbs and then the robots.

I have GE bulbs and eco smart bulbs mainly I assume they will work with both SmartThings and Hubitat.

Now my biggest problem is a I have Lutron Caseta switches and from my understanding will need their hub as wink was the only one they work with other than their own hub.

Lowe's has smarthings on for $75 Canadian so I may go that route as it's cheaper as I need to buy the Lutron bridge as well ($120 CDN). It also seems easier to set up and use the app.

I have Nest products as well that are voice controlled directly through google so don't need to worry about that I think. I have an LG washer/dryer that is hooked up to google as well.

Yale assure lock that supports zwave?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 07:08 PM PDT

I'm having a hard time figuring out if the yale assure touchscreen lock (yrd226) with connect with August works with zwave. I would like to ditch the August module and swap in the zwave one but I'm not sure if it would work. The August connect is crap, it's three feet away from the lock and has strong wifi and it still can't keep a solid connection.

Looking for a solution for a smart button to lock my door from outside.

    Posted: 06 May 2020 02:51 PM PDT

I'm wanting to add a simple smart button for an Alexa routine to lock my August lock when I'm leaving. I don't care for August's autolock feature, I wish I worked like their auto unlock, and was based on your geofence.

Lately I've been yelling at Alexa to lock the door as I'm leaving, but I'd rather just have a button I can press, triggering a routine to lock the door.

Stuck between getting a smartthings hub and button (I haven't invested in a hub yet, all my devices work on wifi so far) and a flic 2 button - I know the hub will likely be a better investment for the future, but the flic has a lower barrier of entry. Is there maybe a way to have Alexa use a geofence/my phone leaving the network in a routine instead?

    SmartThings vs HomeAssistant

    Posted: 06 May 2020 05:21 PM PDT

I currently have a few smart home items and am wanting to lean more into some Home Automation stuff. I currently have Hue lights, Echo's, a Harmony, and want to start adding a few Z-Wave devices.

I have been looking at HA the past day and, while I am pretty technical and could probably find my way around HA, the rest of my house is not. Given that I couldn't find a good video rundown of the HA app, I am unsure how well my non tech savy roomates would understand it.

I am leaning more towards SmartThings currently because,

    A) it is cheaper than buying a RPi4 plus Z-wave Stick

    B) I feel like the UI and setup will be much easier, especially for my roomates

    C) I have a NAS and Server I can run HA on at a later date, and can maybe use the ST zwave/zigbee controller to integrate with HA to tinker with until I want to fully commit to it.

I am interested to hear what you guys think!

    Similar to Wireless Sensor Tag?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 01:08 PM PDT

Hey home automation, I'd like to try my hand at some development and was looking for a white label sensor tag for temp, humidity, light, motion etc like at wirelesstag.net that supports API so I can create a custom user interface rather than a slew of data and simplify things to the point where a child could understand what they're looking at.

If this works, I'm interested in partnering with the vendor however wirelesstag.net support or sales communication is spotty.

    Thanks!

    Help?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 03:57 PM PDT

    Hello,

I just finished installing new cupboards in an extra space in the kitchen and I had to move a PIR sensor from the corner, 2 feet away over the door. After doing so, the alarm went off. Keypad says "Enter Code!!! Check!!!" and if I try to set it, it goes off. A few times it went off even when UNSET.

I took the wireless sensor apart and put it back together, I'm pretty sure I did it correctly. It then went back to normal but went off 15 mins later and "ENTER CODE!!! CHECK!!!" reappeared so I decided to take it down completely.
If connected it says "Kitchen PIR T"

Any ideas? Any help would be appreciated <3

suggestions for an all-in-one visual alarm for phone / doorbell / etc.?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 02:31 PM PDT

My father is hard of hearing, and I'd like to get him a visual alarm for the phone and the doorbell, and possibly a few more items. Ideally, it would be something that I could plug into the existing systems - so, wire a sensor into the existing doorbell, clip a sensor into the existing phone. It would be nice to be able to trigger an alarm via IFTTT or some other push method, so that we could alert him to e.g. pick up his iPad for a facetime call.

Preferably, it would consolidate the alarms, so that he doesn't have multiple devices cluttering up his coffee table with a bunch of alarm pods. Not sure how this would work - different colors, maybe, or a loud voice alert. Or even one of those LED text message boards.

I could probably roll my own system, but I'm wondering if there's a commercial product out there that will get me 85% of the way there. It also has to be robust, because he lives in a different state, and I only get down there a few times a year.

MotionEye COMPLETE TUTORIAL: Installation, Configuration & Home Assistant Web Hooks

Maybe you have several cameras from different brands that you want to put in one place and you want to record movies or pictures continuously or when motion is detected. Well, you came to the right place I will show you how you can do all of that with MotionEye on Raspberry Pi or any other linux device.

I will show you two ways of installing MotionEye both are kind of universal as you can use them for ARM or x86 processors.

The first method is very easy by using Docker and the second is even easier, but it requires Home Assistant. You can choose which one is more suitable for you.

Then I will show you how you can add cameras in MotionEye and how to configure and use the most important options.

The final part will be configuring an automation in Home Assistant so when motion is detected a notification will be sent using web hooks.

    So let's go:

Anyone know of a smart outdoor dimmer plug?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 07:14 AM PDT

Trying to find the most effective way to control my outdoor string lights.

I wish TP Link made one, but they seem to only have a smart outdoor switch that does on/off only.

There appears to only be one option on amazon but I am skeptical.
