Home Automation I put eight smart switches on a wall

I put eight smart switches on a wall

    Posted: 07 May 2020 02:14 PM PDT

I just redid a wall to fit 8 smart switches, two full four gang boxes worth. First to prepare for this I opened the wall and replaced the boxes with new ones since my house is 30 years old and the original boxes weren't as deep as modern options. Redoing the drywall was the most time consuming part (patching, sanding, painting), but also allowed me to rearrange what landed in each box to make logical sense to me.

Then I used the newer "quickfit" z-wave switches/dimmers from Jasco (Honeywell branded or GE branded, the Honeywells were on sale so that's what I got). The quickfit version is shallower. Every bit helps with 4x per box.

I also used Ideal InSure push in wire connectors (https://www.idealindustries.ca/products/electrical/wire-termination/push-in.html) instead of wire nuts because the push in connectors take up less space than wire nuts and spread out the wires instead of having to try and make space for thick bundles of wire. There's some debate if push ins are as good as wire nuts, but they're UL listed for splicing and grounding up to 12AWG.

Most of the time in older homes you're really fighting for space in boxes to fit smart switches, but the smaller quickfit versions of the switches and the push in connectors help significantly even without new wall boxes.

    And here's the pictures:

I’m finally free of those Wink dicks

    Posted: 07 May 2020 11:55 AM PDT

Found out yesterday Winkwas switching to a monthly extortion service. So I bought the Lutron Bridge this morning. The migration was simple. I can't believe it took until Wink dicked me over to finally get rid of that trash.

    Smart light switch for architrave?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 10:39 PM PDT

The existing light switch is an architrave type(slim) with two buttons. The ordinary smart light switch won't fit in that area. Any idea?

I have 12-2 Romex cable running to my current light switch. Will I be able to install various "smart light switches?"

    Posted: 07 May 2020 08:35 AM PDT

I purchased a bundle of different smart switches (listed below) online without doing my homework first. After doing a few google searches, I'm about 90% positive I have 12-2 Romex cable running to my gang boxes. Will I be able to install these switches without running additional wiring to my gang boxes?

Slippery obstacle that's around 2cm high

    Posted: 07 May 2020 08:56 PM PDT

I have an obstacle in my home that's around 3/4" high (1.9cm): https://imgur.com/a/eRg2aDw

I purchased a Roborock S4 (on the way) which is only rated for 1.5cm obstacles. The S5 and S6 are rated for 2cm. I prefer the S4 because it's newer than the S5 and its the cheapest of the three.

Will the S5 and S6 be able to get over my obstacle? I'm potentially willing to pay more for the S5 or S6 if it means I won't need to build a ramp just for the S4.

    Question about installing smart lighting.

    Posted: 07 May 2020 04:28 PM PDT

    Hello everyone

I am moving into a new apartment and the apartment is already equipped with some strip lights and normal LED lights. They are not smart lights (lights that can change colour via mobile or a remote). They just stay the same colour.

I am a newbie when it comes to smart lighting, but basically my question is, can I change the strip lights to smart strip lights easily? I dont plan on changing them myself, I will hire a electrician to do it, but would it be a simple job for him or does he need to move furniture and rip out wires and make a mess?

    This is my apartment. https://imgur.com/a/jIdRZIU

I have attached a lot of pics from my viewing.

All the strip lights you can see in the pics, I want to replace them with smart strip lights, where I can change the colour myself.

Would who ever I end up hiring to do this, need to shuffle around the furniture and pull out the cupboards and shelves and bring down the bed stand to change the lights, or can he do it easily without much disturbance?

    Thanks a lot everyone!

Can HA talk to Lutron Caseta dimmers? Which dongle should I get?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 11:39 AM PDT

I have mostly Caseta dimmers, some are connected to a Wink and some on Smartthings with a Caseta hub. If I got full HA, will I be control the dimmers and if so, what dongle do I need for the Raspberry PI?

    Alternative to Lutron Caseta dimmers?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 10:05 AM PDT

Now that Wink is going subscription, I'll be stuck with Lutron dimmers that I can't control without buying their 'pro' bridge which looks to be about $120. For that price, I'd rather just replace the dimmer switches with something more compatible. Back when I bought the Lutron Caseta dimmers they were the best option I could find that supported both automation but still had 'physical' buttons on them. How much has changed in the last few years, is there a decent alternative to the Lutron Caseta dimmers now?

Leviton Decora Wifi bricked during firmware upgrade

    Posted: 07 May 2020 10:38 AM PDT

I just noticed that there was a firmware upgrade for my Leviton Decora Wifi switches so I took the time to upgrade all 18 of them one by one. In the process one failed and appears to be bricked. The green light is on but the switch doesn't even function manually. I tried the hold up for 7 seconds thing to reset but nothing. I even tried cutting the power for a minute, but still nothing. Is there any way to recover from this? Or is the switch just dead?

    Night Time Light Switches

    Posted: 07 May 2020 12:49 PM PDT

I've been a bit frustrated in trying to get lights to turn on at specific brightness levels after specific times. I'm mostly looking for a light switch for the bathroom, that will automatically be dimmed if turned on after a specific time and then go back to full brightness if turned on after a specific time. Basically if you flip the switch after 10pm the lights go on at 10% , but then after 6am if you flip the switch the lights go on at 100%. Eventually i want the same to happen but with a motion /door sensor. I don't want a wifi based switched, so i was last looking at the Lutron Caseta series, but i havent been able to confirm such functionality on those switches. Anyone have any advise or similar setups that they would like to share.

    Thank you

Relay Not Switching. Any Reason a NodeMCU 3.3v Can't Switch a 5V Relay

    Posted: 07 May 2020 03:25 PM PDT

Relay Not Switching. Any Reason a NodeMCU 3.3v Can't Switch a 5V Relay

I'm building a switch to control my low voltage outdoor lighting by using the photoresistor plug to just switch the power supply on and off. I'm switching the relay with a NodeMCU via Home Assistant and ESPHome.

Everything seems to be working just fine but the relay is not switching (I can't hear it switch) and the test LED I hooked up isn't switching.

The relay is 5VDC and the output voltage from the NodeMCU is 3.3v. My first thought was I needed 5v to power the relay but I've seen a lot of other implementations that use this same relay with 3.3 v. I purchased 8 relays and have tested this on 3 of them and they all act the same. I feel like I'm missing something really basic but I'm stumped. Has anyone seen this happen and know what I might be missing?

    This is the Relay

Here it is in action. The yellow LED on the right side of the breadboard should switch.

Duplicate devices in Alexa after migrating from Wink to SmartThings?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 09:15 AM PDT

I just ordered by SmartThings today. A coworker did his last month (Wink to SmartThings) and his Alexa App keeps rediscovering the old devices from the now disabled Wink. Since they have the same name, voice control keeps failing.

This is what he did: (in that order)

    1. Excluded all devices from Wink
    2. Included all devices on SmartThings
    3. Disabled skill on Alexa App
    4. Enabled SmartThings skill
    5. After noticing that the Wink devices were still there he deleted them
    6. After a while, they came back.
    7. GOTO 5

After step 4. He noticed he had dupes.

If he deletes them it works for a little while but apparently according to tech support they see that Amazon API is still hitting wink for device discovery and creating dupes even after the skill has been disabled. The weird thing is that it looks like it's hitting something that is cached somewhere. because all those devices are not in wink anymore. Wink is Empty.

Any clue on what he did wrong? I don't want to fall into the same issue!

So what Lights, Doorbell, Video Security systems should I invest in? (Arlo, Eufy, Nest, etc.....)

    Posted: 07 May 2020 10:45 AM PDT

    Was thinking:

    • Lights: Hue (already have a setup in my apt)
    • Video Security/Cams: Wyze (bought a cheap one for my babycam)
    • Thermostat: Nest
    • Doorbell: Eufy 2K camera

Wish one company just made it all....Local storage also would be ideal since i have a 60TB NAS.

Moving into a condo - want to start automating things

    Posted: 07 May 2020 08:28 AM PDT

I am moving into a condo next week, I am just looking for suggestions on some automation. I've looked at thermostats (ecobee and Nest) and into some smart switches. Ideally, I am looking to stick with everything Alexa compatible as I have two dots and some smart plugs already (very basic I know). I am up for any and all suggestions - door locks, lighting, etc...

    Thank you in advance
