I have a few big ass lights and just went to their site and cannot find anything on lights anymore. I tried big ass solutions and just redirects to the fan site. Did they kill the light division?

    Window A/C Z-Wave plug-in recommendations

    Posted: 08 May 2020 08:53 PM PDT

I'm looking for recommendations for a plug-in Z-Wave module to control an in-window air conditioner.

My home office is on the 3rd floor of my house, which has been great for keeping me warm during March and April. With summer hopefully arriving sometime soon (not sure after today when that might be, though) ,and probably working from home for at least another month or two, I need to think about cooling the space. There's no air conditioning on the 3rd floor, so I was thinking about putting in a window unit. I'd like to turn the unit on an hour or so before I go up to my office to avoid sweating for the first hour. I've been running Z-Wave for several years, but nothing with this high of a draw. My son's room is right below my office, so I know any device I put on the 3rd floor won't be too far away from a few other devices in the mesh. I already tested the A/C unit, and it will turn on by itself after unplugging it and plugging it back it, so it should work with a plug-in module.

    Any suggestions?

Nest Cam Outdoor vs Nest Hello doorbell facial

    Posted: 08 May 2020 07:22 PM PDT

I have used both and now I'm torn on which one to stick with.

Nest Hello Pro's- Facial recognition, direct wire to doorbell. Con's- No wide angle

Nest Cam Outdoor Pro's- wide angle recording, Con's- no facial recognition, power cord can be ripped off by a person or rodent since it plug in via power outlet.

I like both, but what's the use of Nest Can Outdoor unless I can clearly see the person walking up to my home???

With Hello I see the person, but I don't see them on my porch especially on the right side of the camera which includes my driveway and porch.

What's ultimately better in the long run?

    Best robot vacuum?, and mop?

    Posted: 08 May 2020 12:47 PM PDT

    Hey

This is me thinking ahead.. Could I ask what the best robot vacuum is on the market right now? In addition to this, are the robot mop/vacuum combos any good?

I've seen the Roborock S6, and I'd probably end up getting a used version when the S7 gets out etc. If of course that's one that's recommended right now. Are others better?

    Thanks

Looking for a new zigbee relay to replace a raspberry

    Posted: 08 May 2020 10:30 AM PDT

    Hello everybody!
Until today I had a Pi Zero raspberry connected to this relay https://www.waveshare.com/wiki/RPi_Relay_Board connected to the intercom. A channel turns on the staircase light and a channel opens the front door of the building. Then there is an Android app that makes calls to the Raspi which is posted on a port on my router. I pulled up Home Assistant and would like to delete the raspi, which is the only thing I'm keeping the 2.4Ghz WiFi active for.

The question is this: do you know a relay, from at least 2 channels, that can be used through Zigbee (Zigbee2Mqtt/HomeAssistant) and that can be powered through USB?

    Thank you!

Best options for smart lights for entire house?

    Posted: 08 May 2020 03:24 PM PDT

I just bought a new house. I currently have WiFi bulbs in most of our rooms, as I've slowly bought more as a bulb has needed to be replaced. However, that's also turned into an issue, because I'm dumb and have three different types of WiFi bulbs. No hub at this point. When I move, I don't want to set up three different apps again. I want one type. I also want to be fairly cost efficient. I don't have a particular budget, but $25 a bulb seems excessive.

What's the best approach? A system with a hub? Or a bunch of cheaper wyze bulbs? What difference does a hub really make? I currently have Google Home, so it would have to be compatible with that.

Using an old tablet as a controller

    Posted: 08 May 2020 11:00 AM PDT

So I currently control all of my smart home stuff via the Google home app as well as the respected hardware apps. I have an old Samsung Galaxy tab 4 and was wondering about creating a control device. Is there any benefits to this? Has anyone done it and if so, what did u do and what did u get out of it. My goal is to have as much control and ease of functionality ax possible

Alternative to the Sonoff Micro USB Smart Plug that works with Node-Red?

    Posted: 08 May 2020 02:41 PM PDT

There's a device connected to my computer that doesn't turn off when the PC is shutdown. To fix this issue I was thinking of getting one of these Sonoff USB plugs that I can control through Node-Red. However, it seems like a new firmware has been released that stops third-party integration.

Does anyone know of any alternative that's as compact as the Sonoff?

Looking for a smart lock for a bed & breakfast

    Posted: 08 May 2020 02:38 PM PDT

This might be an unusual application and I'm not positive this is the best sub, but hoping to find some guidance. We are opening a small (5 room) bed and breakfast in an old historic home. For the interior guest suite doors we'll be using standard keyed locks as we want the experience to be a bit more classic than what you'd find at a hotel with keycards and the like, but we have 2 exterior doors that we need a different solution for.

The plan is to have those doors unlocked during the day when we are "on-duty" and then have them locked at night. So I'm looking for a smart lock solution that can do the following:

    • Fit a standard deadbolt opening. One of the doors is historic and we want to keep the original hardware so we are only looking to add these as deadbolts, not get a full hardware set.
    • Allow us to have at least 10 (ideally more) key fobs/RFID tags that we can put on each guest key chain. Alternatively, being able to give each guest a unique access code that we can easily set and revoke via an app when they check in/out.
    • Be set to lock and stay locked on a schedule. So basically when we are on duty the doors are unlocked and once we are done for the night they lock and the guests must have their fob/code to get it. But the big thing is they need to lock again after each entry during those times and that locking feature must not be changeable from the lock itself. I don't want guests to be able to leave them unlocked after coming in late.

I've looked into the actual hotel specific options but they are all prohibitively expensive and complicated so I'm needing to accomplish this with a consumer product. So far I can't find an option that quite fits, but I'm not terribly familiar with home automation so I'm hoping I'm just overlooking some simple solutions. Appreciate any suggestions or advice this sub might have.

Deadbolt smart lock with one specific feature.

    Posted: 08 May 2020 01:36 PM PDT

Got hired on at at historical building site and they put me in charge of anything and everything electronic, Wi-Fi enabled, social media, or anything to do with the 21st century, honestly.

Part of this historical site is a hotel and cafe, they both share the same entrance, currently the entire buildings protected by one singular dead bolt with a push pad/pin tumbler

The owner would like some sort of smart locking deadbolt that allows us to enter with a keypad(HAS TO have a backlight)

I would like a few more features, like codes we can program and reset at will, and also a key just in case batteries run out or someone forgets to change them.

The third and MOST IMPORTANT feature is the ability to set a time where the deadbolt will autolock. We need the lock to remain open from 7am to 9pm, but at 9pm lock behind anyone of the guests who exit the premise(we would give them keypad codes to get back in).

I have already talked with a representative from Schlage who told me none of their locks have that specific feature, while they do have all of the OTHER features, just not the time set auto lock.

    Things to note

We need just a deadbolt lock, no handle.

We have a Ring device/camera that we could pair, and if the option is available, we wouldn't mind that option.

Thank you gurus of this fine forum.

This is going to be a long haul for me, I plan on automating much of the things in this building, and giving it modern day amenities but still having that historical feel.

Home automators: what are your views on environment sensors?

    Posted: 08 May 2020 07:26 AM PDT

This question is mostly aimed at people building systems on an electronic module/component level.

We are developing a multi-sensor electronic module for indoor environment monitoring. It measures things like air quality, sound, light, particulates, temperature, humidity. The Kickstarter preview page is here:

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/metriful/1154877208?ref=5esh12&token=1851a960

(Moderators: if this counts as spam, apologies and please remove link)

A live data logging dashboard example is here:

    https://admin.tago.io/public/dashboard/5e21a4f806fbee0026eb48c8/07c2e906-f806-4e30-adcd-0ca2919d9828

    • Is this of interest to you? We are developing it for several purposes, not just home automation.
    • How about the proposed price? Air quality sensors are unfortunately not cheap.
    • We are especially interested in air conditioning automation, in response to air quality or particulate levels. Has anyone had success trying this?

    Home automation software

    Posted: 08 May 2020 05:32 AM PDT

Hi so I've got a few things hooked up via MQTT (Hue bulbs, sonoffs running Tasmota etc) - all being driven from NodeRed. Works great.

I guess I can't see the point of HomeAssistant... what does that give me over what I have currently ?

    Insteon Replacement Help

    Posted: 08 May 2020 03:58 AM PDT

Two of my v2 Insteon switches died, so I am looking to replace them with tp-link switches.

    Current Setup

    • Insteon Switches
    • Four lighting zones
    • Switch 1 at top of stairs turns on, off, and dims all zones
    • Switches 2-4 turn on, off, and dims each individual zone

I think my wiring looks like this. The "Previous Wiring" diagram is accurate, but I am unsure about the "Existing Wiring" diagram where S1 and the fourth zone are concerned.

I think the tp-link switches have switch 1 control switches 2-4 using a Smart Action.

Would four HS220 switches for the four zones and a HS200 for S1 at the top of the stairs work?
