    Smart switches without dimmer function?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 05:16 PM PDT

Looking to buy smart switches for my home, but not everything needs to have a dimmer function. Things such as my front porch lighting or the vent in my bathroom. Doesn't make sense to buy a pricier switch like the ge or homeseer when I just need on/off functionality for some things.

    Use Tamper cluster / information?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 01:11 PM PDT

For those of you using home automation + security, are you using tamper cluster information? I recently added support for device tamper information to Arcus Smart Home, but other than showing it in the device history, it's not being used for anything.

Do other platforms trip the alarm if tampering is detected when the alarm is set, or send notifications? What's the norm for this information, and how useful is it?

It seems that some devices lump "tamper" in along with vibration and other information since that isn't modeled separately, which could be problematic if paired in an alarm system.

    Smart remote for ceiling fan?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 04:08 PM PDT

I've got a ceiling fan that is controlled via a remote. Does anyone make a universal smart remote for a fan? Maybe something like a transmitter that I can plug into an outlet and have it send the remote signals to the fan that is able to connect to Smartthings or Amazon Alexa?

Magic home controller no longer working with new router

    Posted: 03 May 2020 01:03 PM PDT

Recently our router got changed because we switched ISP. Before the new router I could use my magic home controller without any problems using the Magic Home Pro app. Now the app just keeps trying to connect to the controller and will eventually say "Connection failed".

I have tried to reset the controller multiple times now without any success. After re-adding it to the app, it will work for maybe 10 seconds, after that it just fails again. I have also tried disabling the 5-GHz frequency on the router and disabling the mobile data on my phone as I have seen these fixes before, however for me they don't do anything.

If I look at the devices connected to the router I can see the controller in the list. So I really don't know anymore why it would not be available.

    Alexa enabled outdoor speaker

Hi everyone I'm looking for a speaker that I can put outside which I can add to an Alexa speaker group. I'd prefer it be a portable speaker but I could do wireless as well.

Which robot vacuum for smallish one bedroom apartment with a cat?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 02:41 AM PDT

My budget is up to £500 - the less the better tbh.

I have laminate flooring in the living room, Lino in the kitchen and bathroom and thin carpet in the bedroom. There are a lot of tight spaces.

I was thinking the Roborock S5 Max, as it seems to be one of the best and has the mop feature. But it might be overkill and I don't know how it would cope with some of the right spaces. Maybe a Neato would be better because of the shape?

UPDATE: I ended up going with the S5 Max. It seemed to get pretty good reviews all round, and the mop function is supposedly better than the S5.

Dimmer or on/off switch for dumb lights

    Posted: 03 May 2020 04:23 PM PDT

I am planning to make my new apartment smart. Its the first time I jump into this so I'm definitely new to home automation. I wanted my master bathroom ceiling lights to turn on at full brightness throughout the day, and then an accent lightstrip at low brightness beneath the sink for late night bathroom runs (both dumb lights). I'm planning to put both lights on different smart switches and have a motion sensor at the door running time automations. My question is, can I use an on/off switch for the lightstrip bearing that ill have the automation at lower brightness through the homekit app, or will I need to invest in a dimmer switch. Keep in mind I don't intend to adjust the brightness through the switch itself. I just want everything running automatically through a schedule

    Any 240V smart sprinkler controllers?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 04:10 PM PDT

My current controller is about to go and I'd like to replace it with a smart one if possible. But it's a 240V setup with the 240v going to the sprinkler controller and then to the water pump. Do I have any options here? Thanks!

I've a Google Home turning on our lights. I'm considering getting Ikea's smart blinds but the reviews say they don't work well with Google home. Do I need to set up a hub on a pi to get them to work together ?

    media player

    Posted: 03 May 2020 12:20 PM PDT

I am curious what people are using for your main media player.

I currently have a couple of fire sticks but there are a few things that the fire sticks don't do that I used to do with my kodi installs and my kodi installs couldn't do some things that the firestick does.

    Pros - FireStick
Allows content playback from amazon, netflix
I use plex for local media playback as well as from friends

    Cons Firestick
no home automation alert pop ups
    no surveillance system options

When i used my kodi devices as my primary option, i used to have pop up notifications for certain things. My surveillance system after a certain time when motion was detected on certain cameras i had the surveillance camera add on pop up the camera in the corner of my screen so i can could see what's going on.

But the biggest problem with Kodi was the no netflix, amazon. I know there are some hacks, but don't want it to be a hassle for everyone else in the house.

    Any recommendations? options?

What do I need as a security system for new construction?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 04:06 PM PDT

Might build a house in the country outside of a small city with average to low crime. I don't think we'll be intruded upon in our whole lives, but I would like to prepare.

I know I can get sensors everywhere and active monitoring and 80 cameras and 6 attack dogs, but I'm wondering what is practical, typical, or perhaps even economical.

I don't know anything about home security so I'm hoping someone can perhaps give me some guidance and recommend what sort of system would be sufficient.

Issue with Google Home integration with ADT Pulse security system

    Posted: 03 May 2020 03:23 PM PDT

I successfully linked our ADT Pulse security system with Google Home a few months ago. I can normally use voice commands and/or a routine to arm or disarm the system. When first setting up the integration, you can choose a security code that will be used when disarming the system. This security code does not have to be the primary code for the security system. When disarming the system, the Google Home device asks for the security code and then disarms the security panel. After several months of the system working as expected, now when I try to disarm the system it has stopped recognizing the security code. It seems like the Google Home device loses context after asking for the security code. It either says "I found several locations related to XXXX" (security code), or it says "I'm not sure how to help with that". I have tried unlinking ADT Pulse and setting it up again (using different codes) a couple of times with no luck. I am still able to arm the security panel via Google Home (arming doesn't require a security code). Has anybody else experienced this strange behavior? If so, any ideas on what the issue might be?

Filtrete Smart Filters - Any experience?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 06:25 AM PDT

I was about to place an order for HVAC filters and stumbled upon the 3M Filtrete Smart Filters. A quick search only yielded one other post on here from last year. I'm curious if anybody has any experience with these now. Pros? Cons? Is it really a sensor they attach to the filter, or just a big timer with a Bluetooth chip attached to it? Any issues getting the filter to fit into HVAC units with the added bulk of the sensor?

    Thank you!

    Temperature Sensors

    Posted: 03 May 2020 09:20 AM PDT

I currently have SmartThings for locks, switches, and a few sensors. I'm looking to set up some temperature sensors throughout the house for supply/return temperature on the forced air ductwork. The idea is to keep track of the performance of the system a little bit - especially the A/C which for the last several years has required recharging the refrigerant.

I have no problem doing this via probes and automation at a lower level, but would like it to eventually get into SmartThings or some other IOT gateway / portal.

    Any thoughts on this?

    Rollease or Somfy?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 06:20 AM PDT

    Hello,

I am new to this arena and I have been looking for motorized shades for my new home. I reached out to a company and they recommended Rollease shades. I haven't seen much talk about them on here. Does anyone have any experience with them?

I stumbled across Somfy through research and wanting arched shaped windows covered. It was the only option I had in mind. The person I spoke to mentioned that Somfy is about to release Zigbee motor. I am not sure if that is an upgrade?

I'm looking to hear your experiences with either one. Thanks!

Trouble adding Lutron Caseta Dimmers (Long!)

    Posted: 03 May 2020 05:13 AM PDT

    Hi all -

Lutron customer service is stumped, so I'm turning to the experts here.

I recently moved into a new (100+ year old) house and had four Lutron Caseta dimmers installed on the second floor after they pulled out the old knob and tube wiring.

After they were installed, I installed the Smart Bridge and was able to add each of the dimmers via the app.

Yesterday, I installed two additional dimmers. Here's where the fun begins. I walked through all of this with the Lutron CS rep.

    • Both dimmers were a 3-way conversion
    • Both dimmers/sets of lights function as expected
    • Both dimmers have a slow green blinking light (CS rep said thats good, its waiting to be paired)
    • Both dimmers will go into pairing mode when I hold the bottom button
    • Neither dimmer will pair to the smart hub
      • The screen on the app will not change from the instructions on how to pair
    • Also interesting, I cannot pair ANY of my pico remotes. I have 9 of them. Can pair none.
    • We attempted to pair the Picos standing next to the bridge
    • I changed the Ethernet cable to the bridge
    • CS rep confirms that she sees the bridge and can communicate with it
    • I can control the four dimmers on the second floor with the app and Alexa
    • Ive recycled the bridge by holding the button on the back for 20 seconds per the CS rep.

    Other info:

    • Verizon FiOS, G3100 router, PiHole controls DNS and DHCP (I confirmed that noting is being blocked w/r/t Lutron - even disabled the PiHole completely to test).

Lutron is sending a new smart hub but isn't convinced that its the issue. Has anyone seen this? Suggestions? I'm open to trying anything while I wait for the new bridge.
