Building a new house - What "smart" features must I include? What are all the options?

    Posted: 10 May 2020 07:07 PM PDT

I'm having a house built this year in a northern climate. Some smart features are pretty common knowledge, such as thermostat and light bulbs. I'm hoping to have these features included, but I'm also open to entertaining other options. I'd love for people to share with me all the possibilities, and from there I can pick what I'd like.

Bonus point if you can include a rough cost for your suggestions. I'd love a robot that tells me when I left a door open, but I wouldn't pay 2000$ for it!

Is turning OFF a TV using a smart plug generally considered safe?

    Posted: 10 May 2020 11:06 PM PDT

I know turning the TV on with the smart plug is usually not possible (since it'll just stay in standby mode after the power is cut/restored) but I'm actually looking to do the opposite here. I already have my system set up to turn the TV on using a Raspberry Pi and the linux cec-utils package, works just fine, but apparently LG neglected to implement standby into their CEC setup so there is no way to turn it back off this way. (Apparently this is a well documented issue with LG TVs in particular.) Anyway, currently I've got a workaround using the IR blaster on my phone, but it's not really ideal for a lot of reasons.

What I'm thinking of doing instead is sticking an extra smart plug I have lying around between the TV and the outlet and just having that thing cycle off for a few seconds and then back on when I need to turn the TV off. Only thing I'm not really sure of is if this will have any undesired ramifications as far as causing increased wear on my TV (which is already like 10 years old at this point) or just generally being considered bad practice to remove power from a TV that is powered on. Anyone have experience plugging a TV into a smartplug or just with the general subject to know whether cutting the power on a TV while it is on without turning it off "properly" is harmful to the TV in any way when done on a regular basis?

How well do IKEA motion sensors work?

    Posted: 10 May 2020 10:19 PM PDT

My wife has a habit of leaving lights on in rooms when they aren't in use. We are in the process of building a new house, so I am looking for a way to automate that problem away.

How well do IKEA motion sensors work for this, would they even work in a bathroom when you are having a shower?

Converting 3 way Lutron switches to wireless

    Posted: 10 May 2020 10:08 PM PDT

I have some a 3 way Lutron maestro switch set, hardwired, that I'd like to replace with something wireless. It's not clear if I can use a Lutron Caseta with my existing maestro companions, since they're hardwired? If not, what's a recommended setup?

    SmartThings Smart Lighting Automation UNRELIABLE

    Posted: 10 May 2020 09:17 PM PDT

Hi i have recently just set up my entire house with various z-wave smart devices.

    Currently have:

    1 Smartthings V3 Hub

    45 GE z-wave switch/dimmer

    12 Zooz ZSE18 motion sensor

    2 Zooz ZSE40 motion sensor

    2 Zooz ZEN15 Power Switch

    1 Smartthings motion sensor

    1 Smartthings multipurpose sensor

    1 Ecolink motion sensor

    2 Ecolink door sensor

I have set up all rooms in the house with the "Smart Lighting" SmartApp to turn ON light when the motion sensor is triggered and if certain amount of time (varies by room type) has passed with no motion detected, then lights will turn OFF. Also, I've made sure all devices are using LOCAL PROCESSING to eliminate any potential internet issues.

What seems like a really simple concept and should work flawlessly ended up being pretty unreliable in reality.

    The types of failures are:

    1. Person enter room, sees motion sensor light blink, but light does NOT turn ON. This is not even lag, it just straight up wont turn ON. I would have to leave the room to let it pass the motion sensor timeout period then re enter the room again for it to trigger the lighting automation.
    2. Person leaves room, time has passed the predetermined time on "Smart Light" SmartAPP and light still stays ON. Similar to 1), I would have to enter room again to re-trigger the motion sensor (i see it blink) and leave room again, THEN it would turn off the light at the predetermined time.

I would say that the smart lighting automation by motion sensors works about 75~85% of the time. This is simply too unreliable for practical use, family members at home are too annoyed to rely on it and ended up going back to switching ON/OFF manually. I've spent thousands of dollars on smart devices and professional installations and rewiring, and so far i've been pretty disappointed with this entire "smart home" concept. I'm keeping my hopes up tho and I'm wondering if anyone has run into similar issues and was able to fully resolve it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

List of potential issues that I have thought about:

Z-Wave MESH - I have ruled this out as a potential issue because I have GE switches in every single room in my house and the locations of the switches are very evenly sprinkled across my entire house (also its not a big house by any means). Another reason why I'm confident its not the mesh is because so far I've been able to achieve 100% reliability when I switch lights ON/OFF if i use the SmartThings App. If the mesh was weak any where I would have noticed failures thru the app by now.

Z-Wave Interference - This is not possible, I've in a country where the 908MHz spectrum is not used at all, therefore there is no way any of my neighbor's z-wave is interfering with mine (z-wave devices not sold here!). Also as I've stated previously turning lights ON/OFF thru SmartThings App as been 100% reliable so far, so i doubt there is any interference with the 908MHz spectrum. I've also consulted local authorities regarding my use, they basically verified the spectrum is not currently used for anything and told me they have no issues with it but if it ever becomes a problem they will ask me to take it down (which I have agreed to).

Faulty Motion Sensor - This I'm not so sure about but I think its highly unlikely since it has happened to almost every room in my house. Its not just one specific room or specific motion sensor that it has happened to.

Hub - This is the one I'm wondering. So far I've verified that all my devices are running locally so i guess I've eliminated the possibility of internet issues. So could it be a problem with the V3 Hub's hardware being too weak/unreliable? Are the specs of the device built to be solid for home automation? Honestly, I also doubt this is the issue here, because you would have thought by the third iteration of the HUB they would have hashed out all the inadequacies of the system.

    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

    Mounting Eufy doorbell (battery)

    Posted: 10 May 2020 08:32 PM PDT

Image Straight line spacing is exactly 2 inches, squiggly line is where its angled. So I'm hoping their mount is like Nest Hello where it's narrow in the rear so that it can fit on the wall.

    Thoughts?

    Very tiny switch?

    Posted: 10 May 2020 07:44 PM PDT

I am looking for a very small IOT switch that I can use to toggle some wall mounted lights on and off. They are currently powered by 2 AA batteries, and have a switch on that back. Getting them off an on is a complete nightmare. There is plenty of room in the case for additional gear, and I have no aversion to adding a bigger power supply if there is an easier solution that way. New to this whole environment, but very curious how deep the rabbit hole goes. Any insight from someone who knows more would be greatly appreciated.

Automate CCT downlight color switch or other options.

    Posted: 10 May 2020 06:38 PM PDT

I'm looking for a way to replace my current recessed lights with a CCT control version. The current recessed lights are canless. The are installed to a j-box with a mounting bracket, as seen here.

All of the CCT and RGB+CCT recessed lights that I've found are not IC rated. To be safe the lights would need to be installed inside a can, which I'd rather not do.

I found these lights which are canless and CCT adjustable. However, the color temperature is adjustable only by a switch on the light which would be in my attic.

Is there any way to automate this switch? If not, any other ideas to accomplish what I'm looking for would be appreciated!

    DIY Home Security System

    Posted: 10 May 2020 02:46 PM PDT

I recently had a string of unsettling behavior at the door of my townhome last weekend followed by someone breaking into my car last night.

What are your recommended cameras and software for a DIY home security system? I've used the Yi Home system in the past but would like something that is controlled and operated from my own home server. I have flirted with the idea of flashing custom firmware on to my Yi cameras.

One or two cameras will need to be outdoor capable with motion detection and night vision.

    Best smart water valve

    Posted: 10 May 2020 12:25 PM PDT

Looking for a water valve for my home incoming line. Looking for something with a decent app and integrations, Homebridge support, wired sensor. Also would like to stay away from all in one units and instead have a devices that turns a tried and true water valve.

It's the only smart home device I cannot seem to get decent consensus on and has many options. Anyone crack the code and find a great product?

How to know if the dog is outside?

    Posted: 10 May 2020 06:10 PM PDT

I'm looking for some hints or experiences from folks who have solved a similar problem.

Use case: ever drove away from the house only to wonder if you left the dog/cat/pet outside? I would like to be able to deterministically answer that question through home automation.

I've considered BLE and Bluetooth tags but those don't seem to do a good enough job with accuracy. Waiting at the back door looks a lot like they are in the house from a distance/accuracy perspective.

I've also considered directional RFID at the doorways but that looks pricey and ugly.

Video is another option but I'd really rather not have to scrub through video streams.

Are there any elegant solutions to this problem?

Physical switch that controls a smart-plug

    Posted: 10 May 2020 06:04 PM PDT

I'm trying to replace a light fixture in my kitchen, and long story short, I have an existing light switch that I'd like to repurpose.

I want to affix a light fixture in my kitchen, and I have a wall-plug right next to it I can plug it in to. However, turning on the light through my phone/Alexa would be annoying; I want to replace my existing light switch (which doesn't work anymore) with a in-wall mounted light switch that would control the smart plug.

I found the Lutron Caseta, which can do this with a remote. (see here: https://www.amazon.com/Lutron-Wireless-Lighting-P-PKG1P-WH-Assistant/dp/B00JJY1QG0), but it says I may need a wireless smart bridge; is that true? I honestly don't care about using this through Alexa/Siri/whatever, the physical control is most important to me.

I currently have TP-Link and Meross (MS110) smart plugs, so if I can find something compatible with those, or an open standard, I think that'd be best. Does something like this exist?

LED Strip Recommendations + RBGW LED Strip lighting controller compatible with IFTTT/Harmony Hub

    Posted: 10 May 2020 05:40 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

Looking to start automating/remote controlling some of the lights in my house.

    Section 1: LED Strip Recommendations

Looking for a nice and bright LED strip that will spam about 12' (3.65m). Ideally this LED strip would be quite bright 500+ lumens/foot? I would also like it to be dimmable as well. Would it better/ easier to get a brighter light if I went with a tuneable White strip, or an RGB(W) strip?

Section 2: RBGW LED Strip lighting controller compatible with IFTTT/Harmony Hub

This controller would be able to wirelessly integrate with IFTTT, which would then integrate with my harmony hub (AFAIK this is possible).

Does this setup sound reasonable/ is this even possible?

    Thanks!

Generic smart light, how to connect to OpenHAB?

    Posted: 10 May 2020 05:17 PM PDT

Hi, I bought a "Bazz" smart light fixture which seems to be using an ESP8266 based on its hostname. It requires its own Bazz smart home proprietary app, but considering it's an ESP I imagine it likely just uses MQTT. Is there a suggested method for reverse engineering and connecting to generic brand lights like this with MQTT?

Seems to also be listed online as GuangDong LAC Smart Lighting Ltd. WF19129W

It also claims to support Google Home/Amazon Alexa/IFTTT. So perhaps I could emulate commands through that to prevent reflashing the ESP inside?

    Velux: solved

    Posted: 10 May 2020 04:28 PM PDT

There are many posts here trying to integrate Velux windows into home automation. I finally got to a solution I think I like and thought others might be interested. Short story: hass.io works via homekit with velux active.

I had seen suggestions that homekit was a good way to go and played with python-homekit directly for a bit. I had seen that homekit was paired when I first started digging around. No idea why (maybe they automatically do that when an iPhone does the setup). After clearing and repairing a number of times I did get python-homekit to pair and read back data from the sensors. For some reason it couldn't open the window (never investigated deeper). The whole pairing process is utter garbage, even when it works it takes an hour to get it right on Android. Anyhow the process that really seemed to work was completely clearing it (hold button until red blink, let go, momentary press right away). Then repair via Android app. Setup all of your devices (buttons, sensors, windows). Now pair with homekit via hass.io. it found my window and all of the sensors. Seems to work well and is still controllable via their app.

Needed: Home assistant setup Velux skylight Velux active starter kit Sooo much patience

    • Velux setup on Android often fails to find the gateway once it sends the gateway to my wifi. I think this might be due to my access points having some assistance for mDNS. What a pain in the butt.
      • A Mac can get the velux on wifi fairly reliably but the Android app cant start from 'already on my wifi'
      • Home assistant seems to get one shot at pairing a homekit device and then gets bad state of some sort. Restart homekit between tries. I saw this with leaving out the '-' in homekit pairing pins and with deleting the device and trying to re-add

    Good luck, hope this helps!

    Smart Light Music Sync.

    Posted: 10 May 2020 04:22 PM PDT

I have been reading on this sub and some others and I just want to get some clarification. I have several color changing smart bulbs that work with the smart life app (Years ago i was gifted some smart sockets that worked with smart life so In an attempt to limit the number of different apps i use I went with smart life) I have read on this sub that these lights probably use ESP8266 and thus would never be able to respond to music. But I have read elsewhere that trying to use alternative firmware could work. So If you are still reading this I just want to know if these bulbs wont ever respond to music either from my phone or a smart connected microphone. Thank you for your time and any advice.

    ADT Blue - Trggers Events

    Posted: 10 May 2020 08:22 AM PDT

    Hello All,

First time getting into home autmation, I have decent number of IOT devices, light bulbs, thermostats, cameras, etc. but none of it automated,

I don't have security systems in place yet, but it looks like ADT Blue allows for a non-monitored hardware solution that appears to work with smart devices. My question is is this a good service to use and can I have it tell my lights to turn on, or flash, etc, if a door is opened.

Furthermore, what I'd love to do is if the alarm is triggered for all the TVS in the house to turn on with a view of all the cameras in thee house to thee burglar is aware that they are on camera and should leave.
