    Looking for a robot vac + mop combination; any ideas?

    Posted: 28 May 2020 08:35 PM PDT

    Hi, /r/homeautomation.

    Question is in the title; following are some details about my home itself:

    • My family of four lives in a high-rise flat, floor area ~1600ft2 (no stairs, but a few short (~ 5cm) ledges);

    • The flooring is mostly glossy-white tiled with the exception of the kitchen, which has black tiles. We have no carpets (except small decorative ones, which we wash), given we live in Singapore, where the average temperature is 30 °C and humidity is > 90%;

    • No pets either, and no children: all four of us are adults. However, we shed a fair bit of hair ourselves—we are a rather hairy lot;

    • Most of the house is also very brightly lit by sunlight, also excepting the kitchen;

    • We have three sofas, which occupy a fairly large percentage of the hall/living room. These sofas have a ~8cm gap beneath them—I'm also wondering if the robot I get will be able to fit under the sofas to clean stuff up.

    • Budget is S$1100 (around US$780 to 800).

    Now, I've read a little, and there are a few brands that come to mind: iRobot Roomba, Neato BotVac, Xiaomi's Mi Robot Vacuum, and Roborock.

    I have too many choices now, and am not entirely sure which to pick (leaning slightly away from Xiaomi, given other circumstances). That said, at least a moderate level of 'smartness' and automation is highly desired: I don't think there is much point in buying a fairly expensive robot only to coddle it around the flat. Furthermore, it should ideally find its way back to the charging base when the battery is flat.

    Oh, and I did mention a mop: is there a 2-in-one solution, or is this one of those cases where 'jack of all trades, master of none' applies, and I have to purchase a separate mop solution?

    I suppose that is all; do you guys have any recommendations? If there's anything else that might help, do let me know, and thanks!

    USB Power to Devices - HELP

    Posted: 28 May 2020 02:57 PM PDT

    Hi, I have two devices I'd like to run off USB power to get plugs small enough to fit behind a mirror.

    One device is a Netatmo Welcome camera which uses a 5V 2A plug to micro usb to plug into the camera. I'm looking at getting a 10W USB adapter to power it, or change the wall socket (UK) to have built in usb outlets which are rated at 2.1A. I'm not sure if this would work as the Netatmo manual says do not use any other adapter or "Tiers" power as it may damage the device. No idea what this means...

    The other device is a scent diffuser which has a 24v 0.5A DC adapter, would a 12w USB adapter work or can I not use 5V instead of 12v??

    Any help appreciated! Thanks

    PoE nightmare, what have i done D:

    Posted: 28 May 2020 07:20 PM PDT

    Hey guys, so here's what i did, i bought some IP cameras, it started out smalltime for streaming the sky to friends in america (i have wierd friends) but it's quickly turning into an all out CCTV setup, so with my collection of SV3c cameras, i finally wanted to go into PoE, so i buy a HP powercurve 2650-PWR 48 port poe switch, amazing, except it's at that point i learn about "Passive PoE", here's me thinking PoE was just PoE... so anyway i bought some of these crappy "PoE" splitters seen here (see OP link) but hey presto they don't work, switch doesn't "see" them, i check the output plug of them which goes to the camera and it appears to have "alternative A" pinout Image

    i read on OP post above "make your own cables", i don't know... i feel i'm missing something here?

    i've tried cat5, ca6, i have 3 of these adapters and none of them work so it can't be manufacturer fault

    i've tried PoE and non PoE devices, tried different cables and ports, i've been into the switch settings to ensure it's seeking a device on that port, with external power to the device, the splitter passes the data to the switch just fine, i'm at a loss, it's just not negotiating with the switch for power, at all

    i've messaged the seller saying i have concerns about the authenticity of the 802.3AT/AF compliance claim, can someone perhaps shine a light on what i should try next? i'd prefer not to have to buy new PoE splitters, and i'm guessing (hoping) there's a pinout mismatch somewhere along the line, i'm really not sure, i need some guidance!

    has anyone else got these splitters to work successfully?

    Recommendations for Smart Lighting system: renovation

    Posted: 28 May 2020 06:15 PM PDT

    Hi!

    I've been reading reviews and guides a lot, but haven't been able to decide on the best system to choose. If anyone has some advice it would be very welcome!

    We live in Australia.

    We are moving into a house that was built about 10 years ago, it's in good condition but we are making a lot of changes.

    I'm looking for some advice on which system or set of products to choose to replace the lighting across the whole house.

    UPSTAIRS:

    4 small bedrooms, each with a single light fitting that takes 2 E27 globes, with a single standard switch

    1 ensuite in master bedroom with similar switch and fitting

    1 Bathroom/shower with similar fitting

    Hallway linking bedrooms, bathroom, and stairwell, double switched, with 2 similar fittings

    DOWNSTAIRS:

    Living room with 9 240V downlight fittings

    Storage closet with 1 E27 single switch

    Kitchen 6 Downlights 1 switch

    Dining 6 downlights 1 switch

    Yoga/ballet room 4 downlights 1 switch

    Laundry and storage 1 E27 1 switch

    Garage/workshop 2 E27 1 switch (will upgrade and add larger lights/more fittings

    Outside, 3 E27 with 1 switch each

    Features we are looking for:

    - Ability to dim lighting, indoors

    - Motion sensors for hallways and bathrooms

    - Some central control panel or app control for the common areas (maybe?)

    - Fade in/out for most rooms when switched

    I'm able to do electrical work, and run new wiring etc.

    I'd love to replace the light fittings that are currently glass oyster style light fittings with something simpler and cleaner looking, and less prone to collecting bugs.

    We would like to use a system that allows some kind of smart locks to be added too.

    We don't have anything Apple at the moment, and are unlikely to in the future.

    Our budget isn't set, but generally cheaper is better, I'd still be happy to spend more money on the Right Product though.

    Thank you so much :)

    Hass and BLE Beacons - Temperature/Humidity

    Posted: 28 May 2020 09:39 PM PDT

    I bought a handful of beacons with temperature/humidity and some other stuff, and I am stuck as to how I integrate them into Hass. The beacons identify as WGX_iBeacon, and appear to be Wellcore iBeacon W91 Series.

    Is this going to be hard, or very hard? Are there any integrations out there that are actually easy to use, that I could modify, or do I have to try to start from scratch?

    Smartthings automatic gate opener

    Posted: 28 May 2020 05:15 PM PDT

    Hoping for some help on this. I think I have the process down but I need some guidance on the hardware.

    I have a gate that I control via smartthings, however I'd really like the ability for the gate to auto open when it senses a car that wants to leave.

    My idea is to use a open/close sensor ( https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01N5HB4U5/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3DWYIK6Y9EEQB&psc=1 ) that has a line in (if thats whats its called).

    This I will rig to a pressure pad. The automation would be IF sensor triggered by car AND gate is closed then open the gate.

    I thought of using this. do you think i could attach the relay to this open close device?

    If not, suggestions?

    MyQ openers out of control

    Posted: 28 May 2020 11:13 AM PDT

    So I haven't been able to open my garage doors with the MyQ app for quite a while, months probably. I am busy and don't get a ton of time to mess with these kinds of things so I haven't tried to fix it. Today about 9am both my garage doors opened without any input from me. Pretty terrifying really, luckily I was home and closed them but this is ridiculous. Thinking about what may have caused them to stop responding to my app and/or what caused them to open today I wonder if it has to do with some integration I attempted in the past? I did try to integrate them with google assistant and I believe Home Assistant as well. They no longer show on my Home Assistant because I started from scratch with a virtualbox installation instead of RPi, but my home assistant isn't currently running at all because my PC restarted the other day, so I know it wasn't that. I tried to find the devices in google home but they aren't there either. What the hell is going on? Does anyone have any insight?

    Detecting the power of one outlet to turn on another outlet?

    Posted: 28 May 2020 05:20 AM PDT

    My goal is to turn on a light only when my monitor is on. My monitor is connected to 2 computers, so unfortunately I can't simply use my computer to control the light. The solution I came up with was to detect that current draw on one outlet passed a threshold, and then turn on another outlet when that happens. How would I go about doing this? Are there any other ways I could make my setup work? I currently have a Phillips hue hub so I'd like stay in that ecosystem.

    Google Home Setup

    Posted: 28 May 2020 12:08 PM PDT

    So I'm about as new to home automation as they come, I've flipped through the sub a bit and did some online research and I think this might work for what I want to do. Just looking to get some feedback to see if I can do what I want to do with Google.

    1. I don't have any real reason for picking Google as a platform, we just got one for free a few years ago so that's what I'm used to/basing my research off of. Feel free to offer any other services or platforms that you feel are a better fit.
    2. This isn't going to be our final home so not looking to break the bank, but looking to do a little automation to make it a bit more convenient and not leave a system behind that requires a lot of equipment for the next owner to use
    3. I want to install google home compatible speakers in our ceilings on the main floor, basement, and possibly outdoors that can work altogether or in separate zones as needed.
    4. We are finishing our Renos now, we have a fitness area where my gf likes to use workout videos from youtube etc so if I have Chromecast, can she play a video on the tv and have the sound come through the ceiling speakers through Google or will I need to find another platform to do this?

    Thanks for any input!

    Sonoff POW R2 for 1 HP pool pump? Better options available?

    Posted: 28 May 2020 04:52 PM PDT

    I've just installed an above-ground pool and I'm using a Hayward Power-Flo LX pump (110v, 1HP).

    I've also purchased a Aube TI040 timer because a timer was required during the inspection. However, I'm thinking that using a Sonoff POW R2 would be a lot better? That would provide power usage and I can setup schedules the same as the Aube TI040.

    Has anybody done anything like this? Should I stick with a standard pool timer?

    EDIT: The pump appears to average 11 Amps @ 115V. Might be too much for the POW R2?

    Rocker-Style Smart Switch

    Posted: 28 May 2020 12:45 PM PDT

    Rocker-Style Smart Switch

    I've just started my foray into home automation and found myself caught in a mental loop of sorts.

    I'm planning to replace a lighting fixture in the living room with (4) color temperature variable smart bulbs. I would like to bypass the switch in the wall to give the unit constant power, but I would like to replace the switch with one that can control the bulbs - specifically a "rocker" style switch that would match the other standard rockers in the rest of the house. The caveat, is I'd like to have control over both the dimming of the bulbs AND the color temperature of the bulbs - being able to control brightness and temperature independently from the same switch.

    Something like this? That would allow the brightness control on the main rocker and the color temp on the side rocker?

    the Hacksmith's JARVIS seems fishy

    Posted: 28 May 2020 01:54 AM PDT

    Has anyone else seen Hacksmith's video on creating a voice assistant for his office? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUL4gDVR6MI

    He demo's the system at the end of the video and the results are ... very impressive. https://youtu.be/yUL4gDVR6MI?t=753

    Starting with turning up the thermostat, ok sure my Alexa can do that. But then, without saying the tigger word again he says "Turn the fire on."

    Both Alexa and Google both have features like this where they will keep listening after the first command. But he isn't using Alexa or Google. I can't figure out what he is using, he mention running OpenHab but nothing beyond that. It would have to be a system allows customer trigger words and has follow up.

    There also is no feedback through out the video, so he really is just yelling into the air and hoping for the best. Every voice assistant I've seen has some sort of feedback that it understood you.

    Then the shot of him in his office, this is where it started to smell fishy.

    He says

    "Hey Jarvis, can you dim my lights turn, on the arc reactor, office sign and play me some sick beats to design some things to."

    That is four commands packed into the same sentence with different structure between clauses! Further, if you watch the video these actions happen as he says them meaning this system is doing realtime parsing of the commands? Plus, they all happen very quickly after he says them, I know Alexa and Google introduce lag from talking to external systems but a self hosted solution can't be that much faster.

    These don't seem possible to me with the big brands like Google and Alexa and seem even less possible with a self hosted solution like Almond.

    He has two other demos, the bar door protocol where the lights are killed way too fast after he finishes speaking. I guess you could program the scene to be "Bar" or "Bar Door". And the coffee demo that they admit has a driver.

    Am I completely off base here? Are these things possible and I am just not aware? If so what software could he be using to do this?

    Otherwise it seems like his JARVIS seems more like a person offscreen.

    Pi4 with 8GB released, should I rethink of buying?

    Posted: 28 May 2020 09:20 AM PDT

    It's excited to see this morning that pi4 released 8gb version for around $20 more, it's worth it I feel. I do not find on Amazon or anywhere, but on their official site.

    The real question is, should we need to rethink of buying, this is so cool to have that small one acts as a big boy now.

    And I don't think so there is differece in dimensions, what say?

    I have just brought a pi4 4gb 2 weeks back, I will return that.. 🙂

    there is difference in the board , credits

    Kindle Fire wall mount options

    Posted: 28 May 2020 09:09 AM PDT

    Hi there,

    I'm planning on mounting a kindle fire or two around the house as a HomeAssistant dashboard.
    (I've already got google store and HA app loaded on the Fire)

    Looking for some options for wall mounting. A wall mount plate that makes it look like a built in screen would be ideal, (I dont have a 3d printer), and for power, what i would like to do is provide a constant power source from a 24VDC box i have running in the house. getting a power line to the box is not a huge issue, and i can add a little 24-5 step down converter, but not really sure where or if i can find a basic right angle microusb cable that i could just solder directly to the step down transformer.

    (I could probably just cut up some cables, but if someone has a link/source where i could buy something directly, maybe with slightly larger guage for soldering, that would be cool.)

    So anyway, what have you done or seen for tablet mounting / power? Pictures / options / links?

    Thanks.

    Software to view/browse IP Camera's SMB video repository

    Posted: 28 May 2020 08:52 AM PDT

    Hi automaters,

    I've had a couple of TRENDnet IP cameras for a few years at home. They record motion event video to my Linux Samba server in a directory structure that looks a bit like datadir0, datadir1, datadir2, etc.

    I've never gotten around to finding some viewing/browsing software that can present all of this data in an easy to use timeline / embedded video player style. Does such software exist? Recommendations would be appreciated. Using Windows 10 on the desktop PC.

    Looking for pet feeders that dispense when power is applied

    Posted: 28 May 2020 08:47 AM PDT

    I've seen in other threads people talking about the Super Feeder, which is a relatively dumb "smart feeder" which dispenses whenever DC power is applied. I'm hoping to find something similar to this (but cheaper than $140) that I can just connect to a zwave outlet and trigger with MQTT in home assistant. That way I don't have to worry about stuff like PetNet's servers going down.

    Thanks!

    This is the new thermostat

    G => G

    Y => Y (since this is blue, is this also a "C" common wire I can jump to C?)

    W/aux => W

    R => RH

    RC => RC

    ...and I remove the "RC TO RH" jumper?

    Is that correct?
