Is anyone else thinking of wiring their house with low voltage power?

    Posted: 29 May 2020 05:45 AM PDT

I'm trying to make my house smarter, but having a hundred battery operated devices seems dumb. It's not a scalable solution.

    Or maybe I'm missing something?

Think twice about NEST... let me share my story

    Posted: 29 May 2020 04:05 PM PDT

Nest has allowed access to my account for the past three months. In short my account was hacked, they changed the name to their name and changed the associated email address. I can no longer access my account and have been trying to get NEST to resolve the issue. The 800 number that they asked me to call -redirects all callers to chat. I have had 6 chat sessions, and been contacted by customer support all telling me they are looking into it. All the while I don't have access to my account which means someone has access to my cameras at home and work. Can't log in to shut down work AC units (5 units) and can't get into building to manually shut them off (building shut for Covid). All nest needs to do is verify the prior email address and change it back and it has literally taken me since Feb 20th and they still have not provided me with a means to get back into my account.

Frigidaire AC WiFi app not working

    Posted: 29 May 2020 09:44 PM PDT

Has anyone used the Frigidaire App for their smart AC? I just got their Frigidaire Gallery series AC, and supposedly it works with their app, but when I downloaded it, it can't find the AC. I've been trying for a whole day, and it seems like the issue is with the app. Wondering if this is an ongoing issue or will it be fixed soon?

    Eufy wireless vs wired doorbell

    Posted: 29 May 2020 06:31 PM PDT

Anyone have any experience with both? There is not really a great place I could find for a good comparison. What would you guys recommend if the two? I can install either with my existing setup options.

Does my setup really need a hub?

    Posted: 29 May 2020 10:43 PM PDT

Do I really need a hub?

It's all in the title. My smart home ecosystem is pretty small, and I'm wondering if I can get by with just my Google Nest running some IFTTT applets. I have:

    Nest Hub

    Nest mini

    Sonos one

    2x nest outdoor cams

    1x Indoor for my garage

    Nest thermostat

    Nest hello doorbell

    Nest security hub

    Various nest door open sensors

Nest protect subscription (whichever level has the 10 day 24/7 video)

The only things I'd like to do that have me questioning whether or not the nest hub can handle them are:

Led alerts in my gaming room when the door bell rings

Motion-activated LEDs under my bed and in the bathroom, active only at night for navigation.

Possibly some sort of battery-operated button for the delivery guy to press when dropping packages, since my neighborhood has issues with porch thieves, I'd just like to receive a text when he presses the button. I guess I could also automate this through the doorbell, so the question there is, can I use geofencing to only receive texts when the doorbell rings and I'm NOT HOME.

Thanks in advance for the help, I've tried to be very thorough with my research, but can't quite tell if a hub is warranted, given my limited number of needs.

    Sonoff Basic Light Problem

    Posted: 29 May 2020 06:22 PM PDT

I have a sonoff basic in my bedroom and last night my internet went down. It started blinking while it didn't have internet access. Is it possible to disable this light/setting (assuming the device is connected to the internet again)?

I already have the light turned off during normal operation.

    Dome Siren

    Posted: 29 May 2020 09:43 PM PDT

Alrighty, so I've had this idea for sometime. I currently have a Ring Alarm (I know not that impressive) but I bought a Wireless dome siren that will go off when the Base station siren is going off. However, I've seen mixed reviews some saying it's not loud and just a toy, so I had this idea. Basically what I'm wondering is, do you guys think it's possible to use the brains of the Siren and wire it to an even louder one? I used to have SimpliSafe and have an extra Aux Siren.

I would like to hear your thoughts, TIA.

Why does my new Inovelli light switch keep getting dirty without even touching it.

Can you identify this wallplate? I'm specifically looking for the brand. It's metal, and significantly heavier than a normal wallplate.

Smart windows to reduce cooking costs?

    Posted: 29 May 2020 08:32 AM PDT

I can across this a while back: http://www.smartfenestra.com/

It uses outside temperature and coordinates with heating/cooling to automatically open windows at key times to reduce HVAC energy usage.

Has anyone accomplished something similar with a diy system? Any walkthroughs on doing so? Are there any window openers on the market that provide for a clean installation that doesn't look like a science project?

Need a recommendation for an in-line switch

    Posted: 29 May 2020 02:26 PM PDT

I need a recommendation for an in-line switch that will be connected to an electrical panel that will control a pool light. That switch needs to wirelessly connect to a surface mount boxless wall switch minimum, which I also need. If it is capable of being controlled by voice/app too that would be great. Thanks

Trouble with a 3-Way WiFi Dimmer. Thoughts?

    Posted: 29 May 2020 11:50 AM PDT

    Hi there,

I purchased a 3-way wifi dimmer switch kit from Topgreener. I installed the master switch easily, according to the video instructions, and it works great!

However, the wire set that I had behind the old secondary switch doesn't match what was in this video. There doesn't seem to be a neutral wire at all. For now I put in just a regular on/off decorator switch, from a different company (Pic 1, Pic 2). However, if possible I would still rather use the secondary switch from Topgreener (TGWF3K Add-on) so I can actually utilize the full features of the dimmer.

Can someone help me figure this out? Thanks!

    Eufy doorbell

    Posted: 29 May 2020 07:52 AM PDT

I'm looking at a video doorbell and am thinking of going with Eufy. I decided on Eufy because I don't want a subscription, and it seems to be the best option for that, and isn't a terrible price. I currently only have a My-Q hub and a Nest thermostat, so I don't have anything else for it to really connect and work with, though I would like to add smart switches and cameras in the future. I'm thinking of going with the wireless version even though I have hard wiring available as it moves the storage to their home base so I still have access if the doorbell itself is stolen.

Am I handicapping myself because I don't want to pay for a subscription? If I integrate an assistant it would be Google, which I know it doesn't currently have the best support of, but according to the company they're working on it. I also haven't set a framework choice for the future but am thinking of Home Assistant.

    Automating Wifi Router Reboot Process

    Posted: 29 May 2020 10:05 AM PDT

Currently, the wifi router and modem that we have at home has to be reset frequently. I was thinking of connecting the power sources of these two using a smart plug to trigger "on/off". Although this wouldn't work (I think) because the smart plug is taking commands through wifi. I have been eyeing Samsung smart things, if it's possible to toggle power with just using the app (and maybe control the plug via bluetooth). Has anyone tried this before? If not, what would be a good solution so I can "automate" toggling on/off of the wifi router?

    SwitchBot Meter Reading Frequency

    Posted: 29 May 2020 07:51 AM PDT

    Hi All -

Just got the SwitchBot meter and hub to set up automation for my window AC units as it's starting to warm up in my apartment. I have the Hub Mini as well if that means anything.

When I first fired up the meter, the readings where coming in every two minutes to the app. When I woke up this morning, the readings are now every 30 minutes.

My question for those that also have this meter is what is the usual frequency of measurements taken from the meter? The two minute intervals were acceptable to me but 30 minutes seems far too long between data points.

Does anyone know if there is a way I can change this? Did I do something wrong on setup and should I reconfigure?

I also did the calibration and found that the meter was 2-3 degrees Fahrenheit off the mark out of the box. Is this usual as well? I haven't had a chance to calibrate humidity yet.

I tried to google this all but didn't come up with anything solid.

Thanks in advance for the help!
