Do I have a dumb idea for my smart bulb?

    Posted: 27 May 2020 09:52 PM PDT

I've been going over and over in my head trying to figure out how to solve my ceiling fan bulb problem.

Like many fans, mine takes an A15 bulb; there's not enough room for an A19. But I want to put a Zigbee bulb in there. Or even a Wi-Fi. Whatever. Apparently these just Do Not Exist.

So I just came up with the bright idea: what if I chopped the plastic diffuser off one of my A19 bulbs?

Is that a thing? My assumption is that the LEDs are mounted close to the base, and the insides of these things is just air. I figure if I hack the plastic short, like this, the bulb will still work just fine. I also assume that the light pattern will be bad, but I'm hoping that the frosted globe that surrounds it picks up some of the slack.

Tell me if I'm a genius or a dimwit. I'm sure this violates all sorts of codes and rules, makes UL cry, and will invalidate a claim if my house burns down.

    But will it work?

(EDIT: The switch that controls the whole thing has no neutral, and only one wire for both fan and light. Otherwise I'd just put a fancy switch there and call it a day)

Looking for recommendations for 12v systems

    Posted: 27 May 2020 07:32 PM PDT

Hey all, I am pretty newhere, but not to home automation. I live in a slightly out of the norm situation, in an RV traveling the country for work.

This lifestyle has yet to have much in the way of commercial products that run well on a 12v system.

So far I have been designing and building my own PCBs with wemos d2 mini's as the core for my lighting and automation control. This works well but takes a lot of time. I am hoping someone might be able to point me to a product off the shelf that fits the following requirements:

12v based power input, PWM dimming for LED lights, Wifi control (mqtt or anything open source, z wave is also okay), and most importantly an io trigger for a physical switch. Thus far I haven't found anything that has a physical io trigger.

Any direction or thoughts are welcome!

    Range extenders for zigbee network

    Posted: 27 May 2020 11:23 PM PDT

I have a zigbee network with a few aqara tem/humidity sensors and a conbee stick in a home-assistant setup.
Some of my sensors fall out of coverage often, I understand the battery powered ones are not relying messages in a mesh so I am looking for a device to extend the coverage.
By the looks of it any "connected to mains" device will be relying messages. I have a couple of blind controllers using z-wave and I could use more with zigbee, however, I can't find those that go behind the actual wall-switch.
I do not want to change the appearance of the switches so I am looking for either blind or light controllers that go behind the light switches or perhaps a socket controller I can use for something else.
I read somewhere that aqara devices can be picky with other devices in the network, is that true?

    Any advise I could use?

Are there any options for a z-wave power / energy monitor without a switch?

    Posted: 27 May 2020 07:35 PM PDT

Basically I have a bunch of stuff I want to monitor the power usage for but don't want the device to be able to shut off whatever is connected. The only things I've seen so far are the clamp style energy monitors like the one made by Aeotec.

    Anyone know if this exists?

Another "Alternative to Hue Lightstrip Plus" Thread: Something cheaper but similar in light quality and compatibility with Hue, ST, Google or Alexa.

    Posted: 27 May 2020 07:17 PM PDT

I'm new'ish to the LED world and love the Philips Hue Lightstrip Plus for ease and quality, but they are damn expensive. I tried the Govee LED Strip Lights but they were dim and dull. Also, the Govee couldn't recreate a crisp white light; it was very yellow (and other Amazon reviewers pointed this out too).

Is there an alternative that's cheaper than Hue but offers similar light quality?

Compatibility with any combination of Hue bridge, SmartThings Hub, Google Assistant or Alexa is a plus. I have all 4 systems in my house. Thanks in advance!

    Question about z-wave/zigbee security

    Posted: 27 May 2020 10:10 PM PDT

I have both types of devices. But since they are a relative standard, and I can simply just pair them with my hub (hub has a password but each device doesn't), can anyone just walking by my house control my devices with a z-wave/zigbee switch/controller? What stops them from pairing? (Yes these devices are only in pairing mode for a few seconds, but since the signal is standard can that be hacked to pair and control my devices?

I'm NOT actually concerned about someone hacking my system, just curious how this works. My router and hub both have strong passwords. If someone out there wants to mess with my lights and outlets, enjoy!

    Pool Cover & Temperature Automation

    Posted: 27 May 2020 12:20 PM PDT

I'm looking for a way to automate the process of rolling up the pool cover, ideally it would also allow the cover to unravel but isn't a requirement. The pool cover is similar to this:
    https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn%3AANd9GcQpWCIM0xdGLVg65XQusDikVKfB3KT7fAHIsM55huL-5gbKYxIXLMaVqFPCVFs&usqp=CAc

The other thing I am hoping to automate is taking the pool temperature and syncing it to google assistant so I can create automation of turning the heater on/off. I have a good understanding in technology but not in electrical engineering

Home Assistant Calendar with Google Calendar and Automations

Home Assistant Calendar with Google Calendar and Automations

Adding a calendar in your Home Assistant just to sit there and doing nothing else than showing the date is not as fun as using it with automations triggered when there is a calendar event.

Or exactly the opposite when something happens in your Home Assistant respectively your Smart Home you can automatically create an event in google calendar.

You can use these functionalities to control or monitor your Home Assistant remotely without any Router port forwards or VPNs, right from the comfort of your hand using your phone and Google calendar.

And In this video I will try to show you how to setup everything so you will have a Google calendar in your home assistant with fun automations in no time.

    Smart Power Failure Sensor

My outdoor/garage GFCI circuit keeps tripping and I've lost everything in my deep freeze twice. I don't have the money for an electrician at the moment, so I'm trying to find a smart Power failure Sensor. I've searched, but can't find what I'm looking for. Any suggestions? TIA!

Control panel to replace uber light switch array?

    Posted: 27 May 2020 04:05 PM PDT

We are doing an addition now and the plans call for 6 light switches next to each other which is ugly and old school. I am thinking of moving them inside a nearby pantry, and since they will be smart (probably Lutron Caseta), replacing them with a touch panel that would have various lighting macros (all on, all off, family room, kitchen, movie, etc). I am planning to use Home Assistant. So a couple questions:

    1. Which touch panel would be best? Or should I just use a tablet?
    2. How to wire for it ahead of time? Cat6a and assume I can do PoE? Or do I need power?

FYI here is a larger post with my full house wiring plan.

How to create a bedtime activity for Logitech Harmony?

IR devices automated to Google home + iOS app?

    Posted: 27 May 2020 06:53 AM PDT

    Hi!

Tried searching around the subreddit but the answers are kinda all over the place, what is the best way to get ir only devices to be useable with Google home + iOS app (ac and motorized blinds).

I was thinking using a raspberry as a hub with multiple ir emitters, but wondering if there is any better/easy solution. I'm fine with coding stuff (if there are resources) but can't solder or make my own emitters so would prefer "plug and play" in that terms.

    Thanks!

Smart Light Switches + Smart Light Bulbs: Do they work together?

    Posted: 27 May 2020 03:31 PM PDT

I currently have a Yeelight bulb in my bedroom and while being able to turn it on and off with voice command or via my phone, I occasionally still want to control it with the wall switch.

So I'm considering getting a Kasa Smart Light Switch but will these two still work together? Such as if i turn off the light from the switch, will it cut the power to the Yeelight bulb meaning I can't control the bulb directly from my phone?

    Bluetooth Only Controlled Plug

    Posted: 27 May 2020 06:30 AM PDT

I am looking at two slot smart plug but most options listed in Amazon are wifi-controlled. I was wondering if there's something that can be controlled only by Bluetooth without wifi. I did search the previous posts but didn't find any. Philips has one, but it's on pre-order and only single slot

Looking for a 2nd opinion on where to placey outdoor security camera

    Posted: 27 May 2020 01:19 PM PDT

    Hey there,

I'm finally getting around to adding outdoor cameras to my home security and really just wanted a second opinion on camera placement.

I have the doorbell camera that covers the front path and the right hand side of my house, that side is a dead end cul-de-sac (green lines show view of doorbell cam).

I'm planning on adding a camera on the front because the driveway isnt covered by a camera.

The cameras I'm getting have 130 degree viewing angle.

So I mocked up the 3 options placing one on my garage:

Option 1. Placing it on the corner closest to the front door, angled toward the entry to the street. Purple lines show it's viewing angle.

    https://imgur.com/a/rozFEaT

    Option 2:

In the middle of the garage. Covers most of the cul de sac to the right, and most of the street entry to the left. I don't think it will be optimal as there seems to be some blind spots.

Red lines show the camera angle.

    https://imgur.com/a/iTtW38L

    Option 3:

On the far side of the garage. This I think is least preferable, it's pointed towards the cul de sac which the doorbell cam already covers and there won't be much activity from there unless my it comes from my neighbour.

Blue lines show the camera angle.

    https://imgur.com/gallery/GggSO3e

I'm a security noob, but I'm thinking option 1 is the best placement? Walking up to my front door have to walk right up and past the camera, and it completely covers the entrance to the street.

Is there a way to see Echo devices in SmartThings

    Posted: 27 May 2020 07:00 AM PDT

Short version: I'm trying to refine an automation where I would like to have access to an Amazon Echo device as a speaker but none of my Echo devices are showing as an option.

Long version: I have a "scene" that I use in the morning to trigger an electric kettle for making coffee as well as turning on the lights in the kitchen (so I can see to make coffee) and I would like to add to this "scene" a function where Alexa tells me good morning (I'm a dork) and informs me about the weather for the day. I could achieve the results I'm after directly through Alexa via voice control but I'm trying to find a solution that does not require vocalization.

The trouble I'm running into is that I can't find any way of making Alexa talk through the ST app (new app) and the only speaker option available in ST for these purposes is my Sonos Beam in the living room. Not where I'd like to hear the relevant data.

    Help?
