Glitch/bug - Saying "Okay Google, turn the living room cherry" set off a siren. What gives? Posted: 10 Jul 2020 06:49 PM PDT I have a SmartThings hub that I use in conjunction with a Konnected smart alarm panel that control the window/door sensors, motion detectors, and a 120dB siren of my home security system. I also have a few more smart devices like some smart bulbs in the living room and a smart smoke/CO detector. I primarily voice control everything using a Google Home Mini. So I'm playing around with the lights in my living room seeing what obscure colors Google Home knows and it's quite amazing. It knows azure, crimson, goldenrod, etc. so I can say "Hey Google, turn the living room teal" and it turns the lights in the living room teal. So still messing around I say, "hey Google, turn the living room cherry" and I almost had a heart attack when the 120dB siren in my living room starts blasting. I have been able to replicate the issue by saying "hey Google, turn the living room cherry" but it does nothing when I say "hey Google, turn the lights cherry" which normally does the same thing. Does anyone know what the hell could be doing this or if they can test in a similar setup? [link] [comments]

DIY whole-house electrical energy monitoring advice Posted: 10 Jul 2020 02:51 PM PDT I'm interested in monitoring a few circuits of my house via the circuit breaker panel, by slipping on some slit-core current transformers. I've seen the emon project use those blue YHDC SCT-013-030 and some capacitors/resistors and an ESP8266. I'm fine with that approach. There's also these PZEM-004T modules now that can do more than just current. They work similarly by using a current transformer, but seem to also allow you to measure phase if you wire some load into it. I'm just interested in current consumption and don't want to disconnect any mains. I'm wondering which DIY method is better? Are there any inexpensive multi-transformer capable boards out there that can make installation less messy? Thanks! [link] [comments]

1 Year Follow Up: Roborock S5 Robotic Vacuum and Mop Cleaner Posted: 10 Jul 2020 07:23 AM PDT Hi all! I just wanted to follow up on this post from 5/2019 where I asked for help on picking out a new robotic vacuum. A quick recap: 4 dogs, 3 with long hair, and a vacuum graveyard of 6 other vacuums. After that post I ended up purchasing the Roborock S5 Robotic Vacuum and Mop Cleaner and here are my thoughts after owning it for a year:
One quick note: everything very specifically says not to get the filter wet but I spray it down in the sink about once a week to clean it and have had 0 issues. I may buy a second to make the swap easier. I think that pretty well covers it. Overall we love this vacuum and highly recommend it despite the high price. Let me know if I missed anything. node-red + alexa automation issue Posted: 10 Jul 2020 11:29 PM PDT I am using node-red (v1.0.6) installed in a FreeNAS jail. I did install pm2 to manage node-red, in the tests have I tried with running node-red manually too, both always as a root. I did install node-red-contrib-amazon-echo (v0.1.10). I have an Echo Dot v2. I use pi-hole as DHCP and on the router UPnP is on.
I did turn on DEBUG mode for "node-ssdp:*" and I can see below message every few seconds (with a different message ID). I have tried removing the hub and adding it again few times. I tried reinstalling the package too. Both with restarting node-red. None of the above steps let me discover devices connected to this hub. In Android Application I select Discover Philips Hue hub v1 and also discover other device. I tried also discovering from alexa.amazon.com I am open to suggestions here. [link] [comments]

Eufy wired doorbell + Alexa routines Posted: 10 Jul 2020 09:39 PM PDT Hi all! Hope everyone is doing well. I'm having a problem with the eufy doorbell in Alexa routines. I had it set to where the lights in the house turn on when my doorbell is pressed and Alexa guard is enabled. It was working great but I am not sure what happened and it is not working now. I did not make any changes to the settings of any devices or through their native apps and made no changes to the routine itself. All devices are online and work within their apps as well as the Alexa app. I did reset a breaker the other day and I feel that it may have caused this issue that I'm having now as nothing has been working since then. All other routines are working perfectly fine; just the one with the doorbell is not. I've already contacted echo support and they ran me through the standard troubleshooting: remove and add doorbell back, remove and add associated skill, enable and disable routine, reconfigure routine, delete and create same routine, delete and reinstall Alexa app, reset Alexa device, etc and nothing worked. I've even gone as far as removing my doorbell, resetting it, and adding it back in the eufy security app and switching the breaker on and off with and without eufy linked to the Alexa app to mimic conditions where I assume something went wrong 2 days ago. The only thing I have not tried is restarting my WiFi and I have not yet contacted eufy support. The doorbell works perfectly fine on its app without any issues, it just won't trigger any of my smart home devices when pressed like the routine it's attached to. What should I do? What could be the problem? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you all! [link] [comments]
How iffy is a Sonoff used in a light switch? Posted: 10 Jul 2020 07:44 PM PDT I see the Sonoff basic with Tasmota flashed can turn my regular light switches into smart switches and the price is amazing when you are talking about outfitting the entire house vs replacing with store bought smart switches. What gives me pause is they are not UL listed. Just how horrible of an idea is it to put these inside my walls with live wires? [link] [comments]
Posted: 10 Jul 2020 10:41 AM PDT Recently got a condo and having doubts if I should upgrade the lock. The condo came with Kwikset Kevo (1st Gen) Smart Lock, it works as expected. Should I upgrade it to Kwikset Premis? Looking for a lock to use without having to carry my phone and connecting it to homeassistant or homekit in the near future. [link] [comments]

Smart Light Switches with 2 Switches, Switch & Dimmer Posted: 10 Jul 2020 04:12 PM PDT Hi all, I'm looking for Google Assistant compatible light switches. I need one panel with two standard light switches, one panel with one standard light switch and one dimmer switch, and, of course, a few single standard light switches. All switches must be Google Assistant compatible. I'm fine with having a hub, but if I have to have one, it can't require Ethernet connections. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. New to home automation, need a simple closet light recommendation. Posted: 10 Jul 2020 12:23 PM PDT My closet is a simple closet with bifold doors (something like this: https://contentgrid.homedepot-static.com/hdus/en_US/DTCCOMNEW/Articles/how-to-install-a-bifold-door-thumbnail.jpg). I have a normal switch outside the closet to open a simple light bulb inside of it. The doors are almost always open. I'm looking to open the light with motion sensing when I enter the closet and auto shut off after a certain time. Any recommandation ? All I have is a google home. [link] [comments]
Posted: 10 Jul 2020 02:16 PM PDT Hey guys, how are you doing? Recently I was able to control one IR device over Alexa by using routines on my broadlink. It's great! However I would really appreciate if using only one voice command, I was also able to set my lights to a specific scene. Is it possible? More details on what I'm doing (in case it's necessary) 1- I say "Alexa turn on movie time", and my electronic screen rolls down and my projector turns on 2- I have philips hue lights and I programmed a scene that I would like to be activated during movie time 3 - ideally speaking, I also would like to turn off the heater and the AC when movie time starts. The AC is connected through Sensibo, and can be accessed through IFTTT and the heater is on a Kasa Smart Plug Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]

Posted: 10 Jul 2020 01:45 PM PDT Hope you guys can assist with this or point me towards a sub that can! Short version: I'm trying to "wake" my fire stick/tv, launch YouTube TV, and play a specific channel when my alarm goes off. Or, if that's not possible, autoplay a YTTV channel on a google home hub when my alarm goes off. Longer version: it's incredibly difficult to get up in the morning. I used to have a Samsung Q90 in the bedroom that could turn on/off at specified times. The sheer brightness of it was enough to keep me from going back to sleep. I now have an older TV with a firestick plugged in. I'd like it to turn on when my phone alarm goes off, launch YouTube TV, and play ABC for the early morning news. I used to have specific smart lights turn on with each alarm through Google Home integration in the Clock app in Android, so maybe there's a way to do it through that and IFTTT? If that's not possible due to cross-environments, I'd also like trying to automatically play ABC through YTTV on a Google Home Hub when an alarm goes off. Any advice is appreciated! Posted: 10 Jul 2020 01:29 PM PDT Should I use Hubitat for ease of use and a large community or Ignition for a rich learning opportunity? Background: I started my job as a controls engineer and will be working with PLCs and HMIs. Recently Ignition announced there new product Maker Edition and am thinking of doing something like this. Here is how I see it. I use Hubitat and have a home that is easily maintained and approachable for my non-tech-savvy family members. I use Ignition and scour the internet for tutorials about every piece of equipment before I even get started and accept that I could potentially brick the whole system. Third option I use Hubitat for the house and Ignition in a development environment. [link] [comments]
Posted: 10 Jul 2020 01:13 PM PDT My current smart home consists of an older echo speaker in the living room, an echo show in the bedroom, a smart things hub, z wave dimmer switch lights, a few smart plugs, and a harmony remote. My current most used features are telling echo hello when I get home so it can turn on the lights, and telling it goodnight so it can shut off the downstairs and turn on the bedroom lights. Very convenient. I also have a nest thermostat, and a google home hub I rarely use (was free at ces a couple years ago) I want to add a smart doorbell and pair of locks to the system, but it is really hard to figure out what integrates well for my needs. I have an android phone, and my wife has an iPhone. For the front door, I would really just like it to be able to lock and unlock remotely so I can let someone in, or allow a code to be entered so family can get in. For the door between the garage and house, I would like to have it lock and unlock automatically when my wife or I get home or leave, so it is an unobtrusive as possible. It should also lock with the goodnight routine on my alexa. I would also like a manual code override for family. Right now we dont have a lock on that door and rely on the garage door itself, but having something there would be more secure. For the doorbell, I would like to be able to see and react to who is at the door from our phones, and record the random visitors and deliveries when I am not there. What would be my best bet given the weird mix of infrastructure I am working with? Thanks everyone! [link] [comments]
Tips for a non-vendor-locked wired home automation system Posted: 10 Jul 2020 09:10 AM PDT After being limited to Hue/Trådfri in a small apartment I'll soon be moving into a nice big house in a couple months. Pretty early on we're going to have to redo most of the electrical (at the very least exchanging most of the existing wiring) and I'd love to take that opportunity to install, or at least prepare for, my "ideal" home automation system. Problem is, I have yet to find it! I have several requirements/wishes that all exist in some systems/products, but I have yet to find something that satisfies everything I want, or even enough for me to take any trade-offs. What I want:
Why all this? As you might've been able to tell reliability is very important for me, both for SAF and my own peace of mind, especially since I want the system to act as a security system as well. Additionally, just like the house itself, I want this system to be usable for a long time without ripping everything out again. That requires both keeping the existing system working (not having to rely on a cloud service that suddenly decides it's not worth it anymore) and being able to replace any failed hardware as well as being able to extend the system in the future for new requirements. Ideally I'd love to see some multi-vendor open protocol based on IP or CAN/CANopen or something similar. I'm keeping my eye on https://www.connectedhomeip.com/ but expect it might be a couple years until we'll see enough available hardware. What do I actually want of my system? Some power saving (for example turning on/off lights based on motion sensors) and some automation (for example raising blinds in the morning), but I also want to be able to extend and do more in the future. My options as I see them right now:
So now I'm turning to you! Do you know of any brands/companies (available in the EU), products, protocols, ideas, search terms or anything else that can help me achieve my dream? * The multi-room audio part seems to be a challenge in itself given similar requirements (which rules out contenders like Sonos), but there I think I've found a solution as long as I find a home automation protocol that can integrate it.
