Posted: 11 Jul 2020 07:46 AM PDT I started with hue lights and a google home 4/5 years ago. At the time, l felt like things were in an "unpolished" state, but didn't mind since it was all new and shiny. I now have all sorts of different devices in every room in the house, but I haven't seen a lot of changes in that time. Things just seem to have stagnated feature-wise. At the time it felt like the future, but now I'm starting to see it as outdated... [link] [comments]
DIY Motorized Retractable Patio Screens Posted: 11 Jul 2020 06:09 AM PDT Looking to redo my patio and putting a roof over it. Wanting to add some motorized retractable screens for wide areas (110"+) however the commercial products are super $$$$$. Wondering if anyone has done anything similar? I've made shades and blinds using stepper motors/drivers but the motors involved in this would have to be super high torque due to the weight of the screen material. Basically, any info you have to share is appreciated! Thanks [link] [comments]
Posted: 11 Jul 2020 10:37 PM PDT I'm looking to order Inovelli's red series dimmer switches for a home remodel. Currently, the website shows they're expected to ship mid-August. If I was to order these switches now, how likely are they to ship around the website's expected ship date, or am I better off ordering a different brand elsewhere? [link] [comments]
We are looking to automate our TVs and PCs across the house. Where do we start? Posted: 11 Jul 2020 05:56 PM PDT Hey guys! Me and my wife are looking to automate our house in a couple ways and we were hoping you guys had an idea of what particular features or systems would allow these. Some ideas include: The ability to cast our PC across the house through steamlink to various TVs, through voice. Casting is easy enough, but how do we trigger it all through voice? I was thinking various wifi microphones directly to the computer, or using google assistant somehow (especially since we always have our phones on us) The ability to play music by voice on various speakers throughout the house. Initially I thought this would be easy with bluetooth speakers but it's not actually possible it seems with some generic bluetooth speakers. Let me know if you guys have any simple ideas that would make the house more fancy as well! We are getting our first house and are also trying to learn to use pi for various things. Converting switched outlet to smart outlet Posted: 11 Jul 2020 05:38 PM PDT Switched outlet conversion to smart setup When my house was built I had switched outlets placed in the upper parts of the cabinets with a 3-way switch nearby. Now that technology is better than when I built, I want to upgrade. I am looking at placing lights above/below the cabinets and want to use smart outlets. My only concern is that I have the wall switches. If I install smart outlets and someone turns the wall switch off, doesn't matter how smart the outlets are? I could rewire the outlets to leave them on, but my wife doesn't want a blank wall plate. So, is there a way I can put a smart wall switch to control power to a smart outlet? I know it's overkill to avoid a blank plate, but... [link] [comments]
Anymore have recommendations for a smart multi plug with USBs Posted: 11 Jul 2020 09:15 PM PDT I'm looking for a smart multi plug that I can control each of the outlets individually and each of the USB ports on or off, I don't know if something like this exists. Is there a fix for crazy lighting setup? Posted: 11 Jul 2020 08:59 PM PDT In my kitchen, I have two light fixtures operated by two separate light switches, which are on opposite walls. So if you want both lights on you start on one side and then walk across the room to switch the other light. Then when you leave the room you again have to go to both sides of the room to turn them off. In an ideal world, these lights would be wired together and the switches would be three way so that you could turn both lights off or on from either entrance. Unfortunately, due to the height of the ceiling and lack of attic access, rewiring is not an option right now. So, I'm wondering is there is a smart switch/bulb solution? Something that would allow me to switch both lights on or off from either switch? Thanks in advance for any advice. [link] [comments]

Help with 3-way smart switch wiring Posted: 11 Jul 2020 07:27 PM PDT I want to get a smart switch in my living room. The switch I want to replace is a 3-way switch that controls the top outlet only in a receptacle. I don't see a neutral wire in either of the switches that control that outlet. In one of the switches it looks like the white wires that are supposed to be the neutral were painted black when the house was built. My guess is it was how they are marking it as a hot wire. Here's a picture of the wiring in the one switch, any suggestions or am I out of luck unless a neutral is added? [link] [comments]
Posted: 11 Jul 2020 03:12 PM PDT Hi all, basically what the title asks. Wife and I just bought our first house built in the 60s. It doesn't have overhead lights for the bedrooms and living room, and instead only has outlets for standing lamps that must be plugged in, with one outlet of each of three bedrooms, and one living room, that are controlled from switch by door. The kitchen, dining room and basement have built in overhead switch controlled lights. If I want to eventually be able to do things like lock doors remotely, close blinds, turn an oven on or off, turn the heat or a/c on/off, etc, is there a system I need to build or buy, specific "ecosystem" or specific products to do this? We currently have four Google nest/hub devices, and would ideally like to stick with Google, but am open to others if they are better or more flexible. In summation, all I want to do right now is be able to control all the lights from my or my wife's smart phone, and would like to have sensors in rooms so that lights turn on when we enter the room, and lights turn off when we leave the room. What products (computer server/program, sensor, switch, light bulbs, plug adaptors etc) do we need to do that, and how do we do it? Thank you in advance! Crestron dimmers integration with SmartThings or Alexa Posted: 11 Jul 2020 05:57 PM PDT I'm buying a home that is like to make smart, but I've never really dabbled in smart home tech before so I'm just learning. A friend in the industry has offered me free Crestron dimmers throughout the house, which sounds nice. However, I'm wondering how easy it will be to integrate those into the rest of the setup with locks, motion, etc. Should I be trying to control everything from Crestron Home, or should I try and control the dimmers with Alexa instead? Anyone have experience integrating the two? [link] [comments]
Posted: 11 Jul 2020 05:44 PM PDT I have a Vera system with 40 or so various plugs sensors etc., I mostly use Alexa and scenes (both Vera and Alexa) to control the everything. At least 25% of the time, Alexa will report that the system is not available. I have run the script that the Vera help desk suggested and while it helped, I am still getting these messages. Does anyone have any suggestions? [link] [comments]
Can a nest mini 2nd gen control zigbee devices via an echo plus? Posted: 11 Jul 2020 05:33 PM PDT I got a free nest mini 2nd gen and now I'm debating what to do with it. I have an echo plus 2nd gen that controls several sylvania zigbee outlets throughout my house. So in a room with an echo dot, I can say "Alexa lights on" and the zigbee outlets in that room turn on via the echo plus. Can the nest mini talk to the echo plus well enough to do the same thing? I've been googling and can't find any info about it. Everything is about how you can control other Nest devices with Alexa. If not I'll probably just give it away as a Christmas present or something. Thoughts on TP-Link Kasa Smart Switches? WIFI in general? Posted: 11 Jul 2020 12:59 PM PDT Hey everyone! I have a bunch of Zigbee bulbs from Cree and a decent amount of GE ZWave switches... the GE switches handle existing lights and the zigbee bulbs were cheaper for single bulbs in standalone lamps... I also have a few WEMO smart plugs for misc stuff... This week I had my first GE switch die and TBH, I am not loving the idea of buying another $40 switch to replace the first $40 switch.... and after about 4 years in on home automation I see that the prices for this stuff isn't really coming down that much. I am starting to wonder what the TP-Link and Belkin Wifi switches are like... the tp-link stuff is super affordable and i have a shit ton of WiFi signal in my house... (mesh network).... The belkin plugs I have just flat out work with a problem EVER.... so i am ready to think about do I really want to be using ZigBee and ZWave stuff anymore....
The SmartThings is not super important anymore... i am considering either moving up to something like home assistant but that's another topic for a later time.... i could also be talked into making it easier and just using Google Home and losing SmarThings altogether... Thoughts? Help me figure out the doubts I am feeling.... [link] [comments]
Posted: 11 Jul 2020 04:25 PM PDT I plan to buy a WiFi thermostat and Ecobee seems to fit my needs best. I'm not interested in the Alexa feature so was all set to buy an Ecobee 3 Lite .... I ran across something mentioning humidity controls and it looks like it may be only on the more expensive one. Unfortunately I don't really see much online: can someone describe how it works and whether or not it is in the Lite?

Caseta dimmer slave to wall remote? Posted: 11 Jul 2020 06:38 AM PDT I saw this question asked a couple years ago but was hoping there's been upgrades. I'm running a Caseta system using a bridge and HomeKit. In the dining room, I have a dimmer for two accent lamps. I also have a wall switch controlling the chandelier. In HomeKit I've ganged the two switches so they work in unison. Is there a way to make the dimmer a slave to the wall switch for a certain Luddite significant other who's uncomfortable with using her phone to do anything other than text and make phone calls (shudder)? Thanks. [link] [comments]
Is there an existing product or some sort of kit for generic button presser? Posted: 11 Jul 2020 03:05 PM PDT I think a lot of home automation is about wirelessly pressing an existing button of a dumb device. So, I kind of think there probably already exists something that does that, or at least a kit or parts for making such device as DIY. Do you know any? Or there is no such thing and I have to make one from scratch? I want something like this: Lets me adjust the holder (not sure what it is called) thickness and the presser's position, like so: https://imgur.com/6TnkPJF And pressed the button from a remote command, like so: https://imgur.com/e6ZuGsi [link] [comments]
Smart plug that can be controlled my multiple people? Posted: 11 Jul 2020 11:02 AM PDT Hey all, I have an interesting situation I am trying to solve for. Long story medium I have some lights that string above a communal patio. I want to allow my neighbors to turn the lights on and off if they are using the patio when I am away. I use a variety of smart devices / systems in the house (Google Home, Alexa, Smartthings, Wink (though I am phasing out to Smartthings), and was wondering if anyone knew of a way to set this up. Basically I want one device (my outdoor plug) that someone else could control either via app, or some sort of IFTTT integration. Any thoughts would be appreciated! [link] [comments] |
