Make Alexa audio come from ceiling speakers

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 12:16 PM PDT

Hi y'all, is there a known solution for making Alexa enabled devices come out of my wired ceiling speakers?

So we're constructing a new home atm and are requesting for for ceiling speakers to be installed at various locations/zone independently throughout the house. I think it'd be awesome for the house to be a smart house and have Alexa devices like echo dots/echo show throughout the various rooms the when spoken to, will have the audio come from the ceiling speakers. Additionally it'd be great if these speakers were still connected to the TVs or general audio we'd want these ceiling speakers to be connected to also.

My question is if there are any suggestions to making the response audio come from those speakers? The speakers are klipsch speakers and I plan on having the wires terminate to my network closet that houses my modem/switch/router/amps/receivers etc.

I'd also like for the different speakers to be confined to the group/room that they'll live where I want certain commands to come from. (I.e. I'm in the living room and be able to say "Alexa play music in kitchen" and only the kitchen ceiling speakers will play or "Alex play music everywhere" and speakers in all rooms to play.

I've seen the Echo link amp and this seems like something I could get to power my speakers but I fully don't understand how this would work with the dots/show. Also, the amp can only power 1 pair of speakers and I'd like to have at least 3 different groups of speakers. Are there any amps that could power all the speakers but still maintain the different zones as well be connected to the tv source audio as well in the rooms where these speakers will live?

Note: the house still is able to be prewired so any reasonable suggestions with this can be considered too.

Smart switch with hardwired smart light?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 01:05 PM PDT

I installed a smart light (nothing fancy), but hard-wired it in (bypassing switch). Voice controls through Google Home are great.

However, I'd love to have a smart switch to go with it. What I've found, though, is that if the switch is off, but the light is on, you have to toggle the switch to on, and then the switch can turn the light off. And vice versa if the switch is on but light is off.

Do I need specific switches that can do this? Or this just a stupid idea in the first place?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 11:09 AM PDT

We have been using the baby monitor but now our 2 year old is ready to drop the nap and play in the room alone for 2 hours. I'm looking for the best way to "monitor" the experience of the whole room and the baby monitor doesn't cover enough of the room.

Any smart suggestions? I have a samsung smartthings fwiw.

    Thanks for any input!

Any decent Z-Wave Plus scene controllers?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 01:53 PM PDT

I'm looking for a Z-Wave scene controller similar to the Lutron RadioRa2 wall mounted keypads:

    https://www.lutron.com/TechnicalDocumentLibrary/369221_ENG.pdf

Hard requirements: * Zwave Plus (the 500 series was released 7 years ago and the 700 series last year... so at LEAST 500 series hardware seems like a good baseline for a new setup) * fits in a Decora Wall plate (I have existing 3 gang and 2 gang boxes that I want to put them in) * mains powered (see above) * 5+ buttons (maybe could live with 4+dimmer)

What I am NOT looking for right now: * a removable remote (unless it also mounts seamlessly in a standard 3 gang decora plate - and I'm guessing it wouldn't have LEDs to save power...) * an Android tablet or other touchscreen (not ready for that commitment - and I want a few controllers around for relatively simple use) * using a scene capable rocker by pressing a button a bunch of times to do something (Inovelli Red, etc - not looking to control my scenes with Konami code ;) - though I am using those for simpler stuff)

I have found a few controllers that meet most of my requirements but they either seem to be old, ie not Zwave Plus (Leviton, Cooper), or just really fugly (Jasco/GE Enbrighten).

I'm really hoping a company like Inovelli or Zooz will make a nice controller/4-6 button switch sometime soon...

    Thanks for any pointers!

    2GIG GC2 capability without service?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 12:49 PM PDT

So I found an old 2GIG GC2 in the attic of our house apparently the previous owner had a system installed by ASG

I hooked it up to where it used to be mounted everything still works however I cannot access the services tab where the Z-Wave stuff is located

Question 1 is does anybody know how to "jailbreak"a 2gig system

Question 2 how capable is this to 2gig for home automation?

I wanted to just get something like a Samsung SmartThings and use that but if I already have this for free and it's good might as well use it

Need Help w/ Smart Switch For LED Lights

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 11:08 AM PDT

I had someone come try to install my smart switches but all it did was make my lights flicker and not turn on fully. Non-dimmer, btw. The guy I hired said that sometimes smart switches aren't compatible w/ LED lights. I would love some help bc I want to automate my living room lights without replacing all the recessed lighting.

Z-Wave based light AND fan switch?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 01:52 PM PDT

My house currently is set up 3 bedrooms and the living room using fans with lights in them. The fans currently run on remotes, so there is no current in wall switches for them.

So I am looking for a Z-wave based light switch that can also control the fan, and one that does not have a bright light coming out of it (because of the bedroom/sleeping).

I have seen a few online but they all seem wifi based.

Outside motion sensor light and smart switch

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 11:40 AM PDT

I just got my RasperryPi yesterday and I'll work on setting it up this week. I have a question about how advanced Home Assistant can send signals to smart switches. I'm hoping to get some answers so I can get these lights replaced ASAP.

I have to replace my two outside security lights. They're similar to this:
    https://www.homedepot.com/b/Lighting-Outdoor-Lighting-Security-Lights/Defiant/Motion-Sensing/N-5yc1vZc7qfZfwZ1z0mncp

I'm trying to figure out the configuration of switches, sensors, and lights I'm going to use.

Of course I like the motion sensor function of the security lights and the built-in sensor that doesn't have batteries to worry about. I can't concieve needing to be notified of the motion sensor triggering the light, so I'm currently inclined to just install one of these non-smart lights. These lights also have a manual on/off mode that is triggered by turning the power off for a second, on for a second, off for a second, and back on for a second. The same is used to turn off manual mode and return it to sensor-activated mode.

Does HA allow a trigger to cause a pre-defined series of switch states to a smart switch so I'd be able to trigger manual mode on and off?

Kasa smart plugs, excessive internet usage?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 08:17 PM PDT

Anyone else using Kasa smart plus or bulbs and seeing them ping time servers every couple of seconds? Is this really necessary? Wondering if there is a way to disable the behavior and operate in a "offline mode" as I'd imagine this contributes to un-needed WiFi congestion.

Solution for the Monoprice 6 zones amp in Europe

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 07:38 AM PDT

So, I have been planning the home automation for a new house and have looked into the Monoprice 6 zone amp for the sound system automation. But, last week I found out that this ones only sell in the US and I live in Europe. I could ship them to Europe, but I would rather have another solution before deciding to do that.

    Any help is much appreciated!

    Pool filler

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 06:09 AM PDT

    Pool filler

I have a valve that fills my pool that I would like to automate so I can use it with my Vera or Alexa. I used a wifi switch to turn on some lights in my front yard but on occasion they do not shut off. I am thinking about using the same switch along with this power supply to control a motorized ball valve. The ball valve is normally off and turns on when energized with 12 volt power. I am pretty sure my idea is solid except that I worry that the switch will stay in the on position and keep filling the pool! I thought I could mitigate this by adding adding additional off commands in the Alexa routine but, that is no guarantee. Does anyone have any ideas on how I could have some type of fail-safe on this? Just in case you are wondering, I am going to replace the back-flow valve with this. One additional note, the picture showing the current valve and back-flow, the white pipe going down goes to the pool and empties in to it (see second picture).

    Edit: Removed referral links.

Simple straight live camera feed to web?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 07:03 PM PDT

Looking for Plex-like app, but without the pushiness.

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 10:23 PM PDT

I recently installed Plex on a LXC, and boy is it pushy about getting you to sign up for stuff. Is there a less pushy open source alternative out there? I have very basic needs - play local media from PC's and tablets I have around the house. I like nice displays (i.e. showing movie/TV posters). I use proxmox and would like it to be installable as a LXC container.

I read about Emby, but that seems like it's going down the same road. I know people have to make a living writing software. I'm not judging, just looking for alternative that isn't so in your face.

Posting in the home automation sub because I'm not sure where else I would ask that's not the Plex or Emby sub.

Any hope to stop the flickering with Homeseer dimmers?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 09:12 AM PDT

As I slowly undergo the expense of replacing my barely 3 year old HomeSeer dimmers with Inovelli, I thought I'd ask one more time.

After a variety of bulb choices, including Philips warm glow and various LED trims for my 6" cans, the Homeseer WD100 and WD200 (yup, stupid me thought they would have fixed it and I tried again in a few places, nope...) flicker at various dimming levels. An issue I do not have with Inovelli, Leviton, or GE dimmers.

I have tried load resistors. I have pulled all major loads off the same phase that the dimmers are on. I have tried so many bulbs. And I am about $1k away from replacing the rest. So pissed that I even have to do this and their support was absolutely useless the few times I asked about this.

    Electronic Lock for Multipoint Door

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 08:42 AM PDT

Hi, I need an electronic door lock for a multipoint PVC door. The existing lock is a euro profile cylinder which requires that the handle be lifted up in order to engage the locking mechanism before the door can actually be locked. I have searched everywhere for something that would work; it does not appear that the Nuki can accommodate this. I am willing to put a different mechanism in the door, if that would help, but the doors themselves are PVC which I think limits my ability to completely re-format the edge of the door. Any suggestions are welcome. I am less concerned about actual security with this door than I am the ability to open it with a keypad or RFID card or some other electronic method. Thank you.

Best Tablet to mount as a hub?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 07:43 PM PDT

I'm looking to create a central hub to control all my smart setups. Likely just going to lock the smartthings app into place, as everything currently flows through there. I figure i dont need to spend much since this is its only job and it'll be mounted to the wall.

Any recommendations on a tablet for this use case? I assume android?

New homeowner with some basic questions about smart switches/looking for recommendations

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 07:22 PM PDT

My fiancee and I have taken the plunge and bought a townhouse, and I'm looking to set up some automation for the lights and thermostat. The majority of the lighting in the main living room, kitchen, and basement is through circular, recessed units in the ceiling, not like typical A19 or A21 bulbs--they look something like this (will update post with model number if I can pull one out and find that information).

The lights in these common spaces are already dimmable via a slider on the side of the switch. I'm thinking that since there's so many bulbs connected to the same switch, it'd make more sense to purchase smart switches than to try and replace every bulb (I think there are 6 in the living room, 6 in the basement, 4 in the kitchen, and 4 in the kitchen bumpout). I'm looking for a smart switch that will do the following:

    • Retain dimming capability

    • Still function as a normal "dumb" switch--I'd like to be able to still walk up to it and tap/flip the switch off, but also be able to do it remotely (via Google home/voice commands, smartphone app, etc.), and if it is physically turned off, be able to remotely turn the switch back on and vice versa--if turned off via automation, turn on by physically pressing/flipping the switch. (With the bulbs I'm using in our current apartment, one of the biggest pet peeves is that once a smart bulb is plugged in, that's the only way it can be controlled, and if a switch is physically turned off out of habit, suddenly the smart functionality doesn't work.)

    • For the living room, the ceiling lights appear to be on a three-way circuit with a switch by the front door. That switch does not have a dimming slider on it--it just controls on/off. Since the whole point of a three-way switch is to be able to control the light from both locations, I'm wondering if there are any special considerations when it comes to smart lighting--specifically, can I just replace the switch with the dimmer, and the one by the front door will continue to function as normal (on/off)? Will the position of the front door switch affect the function of the smart switch?

    • Semi-unrelated - the master bedroom has separate switches that control the overhead lights and fan. Is there any reason a smart switch can't be attached to a fan instead of a light?

    Thanks much.

Automate starting programs across multiple monitors?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 08:32 AM PDT

While upgrading my smart home, I took it a step further: I even upgraded my home phone. This one has Alexa built into it. Wish it was Google Assistant sort of but hey you get what you get... ‍♂️

Automate the pressing of a capacitive button.

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 05:27 PM PDT

I have several air purifiers that use a capacitive touch button to cycle through the modes (off, lo, med, high), and I want to automate them to cycle to 'high' when no one is at home, 'med' when people are at home, and 'low' when someone is watching TV.

Detecting the current state of the button is easy (use a smart outlet and read the electrical current), but pressing the button seems like a bit of a challenge.

There's the Microdot Push, but I've heard the company is no longer around and it was never compatible with Homeassistant anyway. There's the Switchbot, but it doesn't support capacitive buttons.

Is there a solution out there for capacitive button presses, and preferably one that is Homeassistant compatible? Thanks!
