Home automation newbie: Looking for an Alexa enabled smart temperature sensor

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 11:30 PM PDT

To elaborate what I'm trying to do, I'm trying to connect a window type a/c to Alexa (which I've achieved with a smart outlet) but now I'm looking for something to trigger it to turn on using a temperature sensor. Now I've seen that an ecobee or something along those lines can do it, but it's just for my bedroom and I'm looking to keep costs below $100CAD if possible.

Power supply for Raspberry Pi 3B+

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 07:38 PM PDT

I have a raspberry pi which acts as a homeassistant hub.
It has a noir camera & a Pan-Tilt HAT on top of it.
And i also had connected a external HDD to save recordings.
It ran happily for around a month

Now the Pi doesn't boot. On investigation i found that the PI is not getting enough power.

    https://imgur.com/a/ybXJFJS

I read about the power supply specifications for various Pi versions.
    https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/hardware/raspberrypi/power/README.md

My question is that should i go higher up and get a Pi 4 adapter , or is there a safer and better option.

Question: Building a new house, hardware spec me

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 10:23 PM PDT

Thanks guys, don't roast me too hard, but I want am building a new house, and I want my house to have some cool features:
    app control of the house
    hvac prioritization (adjustable dampers)
    rfid door strike entrance
shower mode in the winter time: water recirculate at a higher temperature for a short amount of time to prep showers, adjusting heat in bathrooms until shower stops
window warnings when attempting to turn an AC
    tub bath color light
    attic cooler
    home preconditioning (HVAC)

    Initial facts:
    1200 sqft - no sprinklers
    2 bedrooms
    2 bathrooms
    1 office + laundry room
    1 kitchen
    1 living room
    Location: Bay area, CA

    Setup:
    Ubiquiti wifi
leaning towards wifi vs (zwave, zigbee)
openhab2 - docker or vm on server

    Hardware:
    Light switches - 2 livingroom, 2 hallways, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 1 4 button bathtub light, 1 kitchen, 1 kitchen sink, 1 dining, 1 office
Fan switches - 1 living, 2 bedrooms, 2 vents for bathrooms
Window blinds - 8 windows, so a controller per window?
    Thermostat controllers - 2 bedrooms, 1 livingroom, 1 office, 3 attic
HVAC - 6 smart dampers for 6 heating zones
Buttons - 2 "buttons for bathrooms", 1 "timed bathroom vent button", front door/doorbell
Sensors - 1 Smoke/CO2, 2 doors, 8 windows, thermostats (2 per bedroom, 2 per bathroom, 1 office), 1 recirculating pump thermometer, lots of motion sensors, 1 RFID front door reader

    Questions:
Given this initial setup, what exactly should I buy? Am I missing anything critical?

    Brilliant Tech-like wall panel project?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 10:21 PM PDT

A bit of background - I'm a fullstack developer and I've recently been interested in getting my hands dirty with embedded development

I was trying to understand how to go about making something like Brilliant's wall panel. I have the intent of building a system like this from scratch (again, because I wish to get my hands dirty rather than use existing quick DIY solutions)

    My questions include :

    1. Would I have to build a custom Linux build for something like this?
    2. Would I have to build an app using something like https://www.qt.io/ to build the interface, or use something like a React web app (web developer in me coming out)
    • Point to consider based on this choice - firmware updates if I do decide to distribute this?

I'm super new to user-facing UI development on Linux, and my experience is limited to some quick dirty Raspberry Pi projects.

Since this is non-commercial, I wouldn't mind even collaborating with someone on this.

Looking forward to talking to you guys!

    Interior smart lock (not deadbolt)?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 10:05 PM PDT

Any recommendations for a smartlock on an interior door (datacenter/lab FWIW) preferably with biometrics, keypad, and BTLE? Looking for something that implements the std door latch instead of electromagnetic plate.

How to make Grafana available in HA when it's not a HA addon.

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 08:32 PM PDT

I have Home Assistant running in a VM, with the Grafana/Influx addon. I also have an instance of Influx / Grafana in a separate VM. I don't know how ingress works, but I was wondering if it's possible to put other web applications, like my separate Grafana, into the side bars of my Home Assistant UI and also have ingress work?

Can HA just be a big proxy for any of my locally running web applications? That would be great, since HA makes it so easy to use letsencrypt/duckDNS.

Can I use a smart plug like a timer?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 07:20 PM PDT

I know I can use one to turn something on or off on a schedule. That's not necessarily what I'm asking. Can I use one to prevent something from being turned on during certain times of the day?

For example, can I prevent an Xbox plugged into one from being turned on late at night? I know the plug could be switched, but I'm just talking basic here.

If this is a possibility, are there any plugs to recommend? Any to stay away from? I would prefer it work with Android and iOS if at all possible.

Tips for automating an analog heater?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 03:27 PM PDT

Hello r/homeautomation! As I'm continuing my quarantine project and adding to my home automation system I built through openhab, but I need some help to see if it's possible to automate the built-in heaters in my apartment. The heater dial is analog, not digital, and I have no clue how I'd be able to adjust it remotely. And since I'm in an apartment, this is rent space not something I own, so everything I've automated is and has to be as non-invasive as possible. The point is to not have to spend $200+ on any smart thermostat, as I'm currently building a "box" that has a DHT22 and an ESP chip to communicate to my HAS (via tasmota), and IR stuff to communicate to my window AC. The only thing I can think of is carefully replacing the analog dial with some digital thermostat with a remote control and use my box to emulate THAT remote's IR, but those things are still $100 and I'm afraid the heater won't work at all if I mess something up or realize it won't be able to control the heaters. Does anyone have any recommendations or suggestions to point me in the right direction? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!

Can I link laptop events to a Smart Plug?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 06:59 PM PDT

I want to turn off smart plug(s) if I Shut down/Sleep the laptop. I have connected everything to smart plugs in my office, so in case I shut down the laptop (or it happens automatically), I want all smart plugs to be off.

I have Alexa in case that helps with some automation.

Heating RF remote - can this be controlled by Google Home?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 05:19 PM PDT

Hi. I have an old central heating system that uses a hand-held RF remote / thermostat (https://imgur.com/a/7DMy9Lc).
It's an Australian Bonaire / Vulcan unit for anyone from there.
I've looked at the Broadlink RM4 Pro but still not sure if that would actually work.
This is a link to the heater manual - https://www.manualslib.com/manual/639673/Bonaire-Bonaire.html#product-Vulcan%20Comfort%20Control
I'd like to know if I can use the Broadlink with this to control on / off and temperature. If not the Broadlink, some other learning RF controller that can be controlled with Google Assistant.
    Thanks

Looking for either a smart fan or a fan that has a mechanical on/off for smart plug use. Also it would be preferred if the fan has both heating and cooling abilities. Not sure if I need a fan or a portable a/c heater.

How can I make my ecobee sensors either more attractive or less conspicuous?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 01:13 PM PDT

These sensors aren't as sensitive as I like and frequently say my room is unoccupied while my partner and I sit at our desks, working. So I need to move them to a more conspicuous place. But also they look a little tacky, and I'll probably have to stare at it for the foreseeable future unless a vaccine comes out soon.

    Looking for any suggestions.

Arlo Doorbell motion Alerts are non stop

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 12:49 PM PDT

I have narrowed down the activity zones for the arlo video doorbell but I continue to get alerts every 2 or 3 minutes. I used to have a ring doorbell and I didn't get false alerts much at all. I want to keep the arlo but I am thinking about going back to Ring. Any advice on how to control or cut down on the false alerts?

Feel like I'm taking crazy pills. Kasa HS220 wiring

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 08:34 AM PDT

Alright, I honestly had been at this for a couple hours and maybe it's time to just set this thing down and say maybe I got a faulty product. But I hate to admit defeat.

I've already installed one of these smart switches, and I've changed a few switches and outlets, I'm generally confident in my wiring. So what's going on here?

I've got an (extremely tight) box with 3 leads: black, red, and white. Usually black should be line, red load, and white common. However, red is hot when the power is on and black is not (white is also hot obviously). Fine, someone wired this backwards, no big deal. So I connect up my Kasa HS220 dimmer switch. Red to line, black to load, white to common, and since there's no ground I tapped the green to the back of the steel box which hopefully is grounded... Flipped the power back on and! Nothing, light does not switch on and off, stays in the off position. Kasa doesn't show any sign of life, no status light or wifi light. Now here's the weird part. With the switch connected, both the red and black wires are hot. Or seemingly. The black wire now shows hot to the non contact tester, but the light does not turn on.

Just to be sure I flipped the power off and twisted red and black together without the switch and flipped the power on. Light on.

Maybe, somehow, I thought the load was getting power but not enough to light the light? But it's got 110v across it according to my multimeter.

This doesn't make any sense. What am I doing wrong here? I tried hooking it backwards as well (black to line like it should be) and still nothing. Maybe it's just broke but I still can't figure why the light wouldn't be on when the switch is closed

    Advice on beginning home automation

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 12:03 PM PDT

I'm wanting to start automating my house but I'm not sure where to start at. I'm looking into getting a nest learning thermostat and a robovac to start with but would eventually like to have lights that detect motion and turn on and change behavior depending on the time of day.

What to use the starter kit's button for?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 10:29 AM PDT

Just received my Mi Home Starter Kit. It contains the smart home hub, 2 motion sensors, two door sensors and a remote switch. Now, I can easily understand the others but what do people use the switch/button for? I would expect starter kit to be a standalone set of things. So what can I do with the button without buying more things (I will of course buy more things :D , I'm just curious about the selected bits and pieces included in a starter kit).
