    New Project Information Gathering

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 12:46 AM PDT

I decided to challenge myself to learn multiple new skills to build a project I have been daydreaming about for a while now.

TL;DR = I want to make a home automation interface toy that is interactive and am starting to look for any helpful guides or information to start the learning.

I want to make a thing from the ground up that will be kind of an homegrown interface for my home systems. It will be voice activated/controlled with some sort of audio and visual responses (LEDs and small speaker for specific sounds or even piping Google through).

I'm teaching myself all the steps along the way. The modeling and printing of the encasement. Programming the lighting and responses. Even the painting of the end product. It will likely be built on a Pi as I have access to several.

I'm starting to gather all the helpful information I can think of. I have little bits of knowledge in most of the areas. Minor programming.

Wifi Network Best Practices As It Pertains To Home Automation?

    Posted: 14 Jul 2020 08:04 PM PDT

I had a nice long conversation with ATT today about my ISP-provided gateway. According to them, I'm getting poor D/U speeds due to having too many devices on my network.

I don't know if that is the real reason but I DO have a TON of devices on my network; 10 Echo devices, 5 Ring cameras, 2 Nest thermostats, 2 Logitech Harmony Hubs, 2 Roborock Vacuums, TVs/receivers/streaming devices, Xboxs, Laptops, Cell Phones, Smart Watches, Tablets. Off the top of my head I count something like 40 devices that are always connected. Is that a lot? Nonetheless it got me thinking, what are the best practices for our Wifi networks for home automation products? My networking knowledge is on par with your grandmother's so I don't know, should I be using a guest network? Set up a second network? What should be done about security, ect?

Just looking for a few tips and maybe to help someone else out in the future too. Thanks for your help!

Wiring smart switch into attic fan

    Posted: 14 Jul 2020 10:12 PM PDT

    Greetings!

I have an interesting situation. I'm looking into wiring my attic fan with timer and high/low/off knob into a smart switch with high/low/off rocker. The power supply consists of a red, black, white, and ground wire, so I have the coveted neutral wire.

Currently I have the white wire from the wall going to the timer, then a black wire going from the timer to the high/low knob. From the knob I have a red and black wire, that are both going to the fan. I also have a black wire that is connected from the fan itself to the wire coming from the circuit breaker.

I've decided on the GE Z-wave switch to replace the timer for now, and a more modern looking rocker for the high/low.

I'd like to make sure I can get this wired in correctly based on the supplied wire I have coming from the breaker, and I don't buy switches and then have to return them. I've been reading so many threads and articles I think I have a good idea of how to pull this off, but want to get some opinions first.

How to detect when no-one is home

    Posted: 14 Jul 2020 12:54 PM PDT

I want to run roborock to do hist work, i use to schedule it when we were at work, but me and my wife work from home now so i cancel the schedule and run it manually when we leave. Surely i dont want to run it when one of us leave, ideally when we leave together - i can also switch off all light if we forgot

My idea is checking clients on wifi, we always wear iphones with us

Or maybe some motion sensor, with door sensor?

Best option for a smart 5-way toggle switch

    Posted: 14 Jul 2020 06:43 PM PDT

I would like to have a smart switch installed for my kitchen recessed lights. It is a 5-way (four switches to control) toggle switch in the switch board with multiple toggle switches in a single board. What would be the best option for me (by best, I mean least re-wiring and least expensive in that order).

Ideally, Zooz's S2 would have been ideal, but they don't yet come in toggle switches. Any other vendor provides a toggle switch that does not require re-wiring of all switches?

Where can I find 14mm 6 pin solderless connectors for rgbww cct strips?

    Posted: 14 Jul 2020 06:36 PM PDT

i foolishly ordered the 12 mm variety and have not been able to locate anywhere with 6 pin 14mm connectors in stock. Do y'all have any links for a novice? I would try soldering, but the contacts are so fine I'm sure I would end up with flow over.

About trying some smart switches with mixed results I think about bridging all my switches and use smart bulbs instead, change my view!

    Posted: 14 Jul 2020 12:26 PM PDT

I used some different approaches to make my lights / switches smart to use scenes and motion sensors etc. I have mixed results and the smart switches I use (Homemaitc IP, not so well known in US I guess) are rather expensive (70 bucks) and big (they barely fit into the wall and it is a PITA to install). I now thought about going the opposite direction and supply permanent power to the bulbs and use smart bulbs instead (with a remote replacing the wall switches completely).

Did anyone go down this road already? What is your experience? Which system did you use and why? I already have quite some Hue stuff so I might use that.

I refuse to believe a motion sensor can't activate a smart plug.

    Posted: 14 Jul 2020 10:21 AM PDT

    I simply refuse!!

Basically a couple of people have told me there is no way but I know that you smart people will have a solution.

The dream: When I walk into a room during the day, a motion sensor detects movement and turns on a couple of smart plugs.

The ingredients: I currently have teckin smart plugs which are all nicely working and can be controlled through my google home. I have phillips hue lights which come on with the help of a phillips hue motion sensor but I so far haven't found a way to get the motion sensor to also activate the smart plugs.

Has any one got this set up to work or has recommendations on what I would need to buy to make this work?

Please help me you glorious people, you!

Request: Connect Rachio Sprinkler with Motion Sensor

    Posted: 14 Jul 2020 01:07 PM PDT

With stray pets making a litter box of our yard, this is my first foray into automation integration so I'd appreciate any wisdom or resources you have to share. I know they make devices that hook into a hose but that an eye-sore and prone to break and don't want to flood my house with a hose that's always turned on.

As options for how to integrate we already have: SmartThings (just the mesh network for internet), Simplisafe, Amazon Alexa, a Google Home gathering dust in a closet, and of course a Rachio sprinkler controller.

Have you attempt this integration before? Do you think IFTTT could be trusted with something like this?

Is there a motion sensor that would hold up to rain and summer heat?

    New Home Build

    Posted: 14 Jul 2020 03:20 PM PDT

    Hi All,

Looking for some input on what you would like to see if your house was being built new and you have the opportunity to run anything you'd like. I have been experimenting with home assistant at my current home and have a mix of different types of smart switches (TP-link, Sonoff Minis, etc). I currently have cat6 run to all of the rooms including two to rooms with tv's but I am definitly going to up those to two per room with 5 cat6 and one coax to each tv. I'm thinking of doing cat6 to each window and door for contacts for open/close detection as well as for a possible source of communication/power for automated shades. I have also been thinking of putting in cat6 to each area I would like motion sensors or esp32 based sensors (motion, temp, humidity, noise...). What are everyone's thoughts on running the light switches as low voltage switch that feed back to main relay area with relays controlling the different lights? Also hoping for a whole home audio set up, but I think I'll run the wires to the networking room and deal with those later.

Anything else I could be missing? This is a home we are hoping to live in for a long time, but given there's poor internet I'd like everything to be able to self-host.

I appreciate any help I receive.

    Thank You
