What's the difference between things like Nest Hub/Echo Show and downloading the apps on an iPad?

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 10:11 PM PDT

    Hello,

I'm getting into the smart home game and am starting with cameras and doorbell cam. My question is: are there any benefits to using things like Nest Hub or Echo Show versus just using the iPad app and interacting with my smart home that way?

Closing on a house tomorrow and have a few questions

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 09:28 PM PDT

So I'm started with a pretty blank slate and want to make sure I don't make any decisions I regret later on. I'm interested in going pretty deep into home automation but my initial project will be living room lighting. At the moment I'm looking at the vera plus because I like the idea of not dealing with a cloud service. Though I do generally know my way around a raspberry pi and saw some options there.

Specifically for the lighting project I like the idea of changing the warmth of the bulb though it doesn't need to be rgb and I would appreciate a smart switch that wouldn't cause problems to work together with the smart bulb.

    I suppose my questions are

What would be a good hub to start with good flexibility and compatibility?

What is a good combination of smart bulb and switches to get started with that is compatible?

I feel comfortable with both diving into the technical side of things as well as any electrical work I may need to do.

How to control fan and lights independently on dumb ceiling fans?

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 07:52 PM PDT

I have quite a few ceiling fans in my house. Most of them are wired up using a single switch using 14/2 romex. This means that the switches just toggle the power on/off to the whole unit and I need to use the pull chains to adjust whether I want fan + light, fan only, or light only. I've been trying to think of ideas on how to control fan and lights independently.

One idea would be to try squeezing a couple of sonoffs in the canopy, one for fan and one for light. I would then remove the wall switch, permanently connect the wires, and install a modified smart switch back into the wall. By "modified" I'm thinking of gutting a GE/Jasco Zigbee add-switch and hacking in an ESP8266 with the physical rocker switch connected to two GPIO pins + small power supply. Using Home Assistant and ESPHome, I could then do things like "single tap for lights, double tap for fan."

    Pluses:

    • Professional looking fit and finish

    • Infinitely customizable

    Cons:

    • A lot of work

    • Have to destroy a $30 smart switch

    • Safety concerns about installing a power supply into my wall that's not rated for that use.

Advice on multiple triggers for IFTTT...

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 03:56 PM PDT

    Hi all,
Hopefully the more knowledgable here can provide some advice!

I have a SmartLife smart switch, and a SmartThings door contact sensor.
    What I have is..

IFTTT - IF SmartThings Sensor is opened > Turn on the switch.

    When I need is...

IF SmartThings Sensor is opened AND it's past sunset > Turn on the switch.

Years ago I would have used Stringify for this, however, I've just seen that it no longer exists.

Is there something else out there that could provide this (which is free)?

    Thank you!

Upgrade from Universal Devices ISY Zwave

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 05:55 PM PDT

I have a Universal Devices ISY Zwave hub and a network of about 40 Zwave devices, running various automation routines, and integrating IR commands, UDP messaging, etc. I've had it in place for a while and I'm just not all that impressed with the ISY solution, for a number of reasons. It just seems a bit.. clunky? Device support and firmware updates have been confusing and annoying. It's close and has some stuff going for it, but other parts are just baffling.

I am looking for an upgrade to the Zwave hub / controller. Id like something a bit more powerful, mature, flexible, etc. I still want to make use of other IO like IR, UDP, serial, API integrations, etc. What would be a good recommendation to step up to? I'm ok with something that is technically complex, as long as it is robust and reliable. I'll put in the work to set it up, but it has to be solid from that point on.

Is HomeSeer a solid solution? Hubitat? Is there a build-your-own hub OS out there? I've seen HomeAssistant, but I'm hesitant to run critical apps on an RPI.

I'm looking for the equivalent of PFSense, the router OS. It's super powerful, mature, etc. Is there an equivalent Zwave hub/controller?

The only useful thing from my smart washer and dryer

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 08:29 PM PDT

There was a post about integrations with a smart washer and dryer system into home automations recently, and I lamented that the smart laundry systems were a gimmick. Those of you who live in mansions or regally large castles disagreed, because the notification you received provided a marginal benefit to you, because, large living spaces I suppose.

Anyway, my washer just reordered its own laundry detergent. I'd totally forgotten about this on account of how insanely little detergent gets used. While I still think this is marginally gimmicky, I do get much more value from this feature vs being notified that my laundry is done.

Once these systems do something useful, like summons the folderbot6000, or WetClothesPutterInTheDryerFromTheWasherBot 2.0, I'll convert to full zealot from grump.

Need Replacement for 2-speed fan switch

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 08:23 PM PDT

I have a TPI 2-SW 2 Speed Attic Fan Switch (like this: https://morelectricheating.com/fost792707-fostoria-2-sw-2-speed-attic-fan-switch-and-plate) in my home that controls a belt drive whole house fan.

I am looking to replace this switch with something "Smart". Preferably z-wave, or wifi, but would be open to just about anything really. I'm running Home Assistant with a z-wave dongle, but have numerous esp8266 around the house as well.

Right now, I'm using this switch to control the speeds, and then have a Sonoff, flashed with ESPhome, to control the power. This works great for controlling power, but I'd like to control speeds as well.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can I use smart bulbs with dumb dimmers?

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 08:22 PM PDT

I would like to install smart bulbs in my house but we have switches that will gradually turn the lights on from their off state. I have tried using Phillips Hue brand of bulbs but these have problems. Whenever I turn the lights on in the room, until they are at full brightness, the Phillips bulbs will blink rapidly. Is there a brand of smart bulb that will work in my house?

Teckin SP10 Smart Plugs - All Failing

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 07:35 PM PDT

More of a sanity check than anything. Yesterday, it appears my four-pack of Teckin SP10 smart plugs just stopped working entirely! Not sure what I need to do right now in order to get them back up and running, but curious if anyone else has had the same thing happen to them over the course of the last day or so.

    Thanks!

Magic Home LED local control script?

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 06:02 PM PDT

    Hey all,

I got an email from Magic Home saying they were going to start charging for IFTTT usage. Plus the fact that its super slow and unreliable in Aus got me thinking about controlling the magic home controllers locally from a script.

I'm already doing the same for my Xiaomi Yeelights, though Tautulli to turn on and off lights when I start a movie ect

Has anyone seen anything like that for Magic Home? without flashing Tasmota (too hard on those little things lol)

    Thanks guys!

    Automate ceiling fans with IR

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 01:30 PM PDT

I have two ceiling fans that operate via IR remotes and I'm trying to integrate them with Control4 either directly or via a Vera Plus. I have looked at Bond and a few other devices - but invariably they always require a puck of sorts. This is a hallway of sorts with high ceilings and a puck isn't really reasonable. Is there anything that might mount to the fan itself to blast IR?

The fan is a Big Ass Haiku like this. The kicker is the designer ordered an outdoor model which has no WiFi or 0-10v and of course I can't return these things.

    Shelly 2.5 3-Way Wiring help.

I'm attempting to install a Shelly 2.5 in a 3-way circuit. I've had success turning the lights on/off, but I can't seem to figure out how to make the Shelly work AND keep the 3-way switches functional. Attached is a diagram of how this circuit is wired, tips, and suggestions greatly appreciated.

What alarm/security system would you recommend?

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 02:00 AM PDT

I'm living in Europe and I'm trying to find a system to protect my house. I'm looking for something with a good ratio quality/price, ideally with no quotas, just an initial payment.

Some system that includes: - an app for control (from several devices) - security cameras (ideally, also with motion detecting software) - simple motion detectors - door and window sensors

I was going to try aqara and xiaomi, but I recently bought the xiaomi security camera 1080p and I was extremely disappointed by the system. Even if the camera is functional and the quality is good, the automation UI doesn't work and I'm unable to deactivate/ activate it, or shutdown/start the camera properly.

    What would you guys suggest?
