Ok, which one of you did this?

I spent the last 2 years working on my startup to create a smart home inventory app that lets you ask google about "dumb" things in your house. Here is my promo video. It's available on Android, iOS, and at housebook.io. It's been really hard, but i'm hoping it becomes the next thing in smart homes!

    Charting attic temp over time?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 08:06 PM PDT

Hey all. I figure this is a good community that has enough experience to chime in on what devices/setup I need to accomplish this goal...

Looking for some battery powered temperature sensors in combination with a hub that will take samples over time to collect some data related to air temps in parts of my attic. I'm comfortable with Rasberry pis and microcontrollers if there is some open source software I can run in conjunction with some wireless sensors. The biggest thing I want is a setup that can just collect data unattended for like a year. Then I can query the data to find highest readings and see readings over the course of the day, etc. thanks in advance for any input!

Is there any alternative to Harmony for controlling "dumb" IR TVs?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 11:46 PM PDT

So I am tearing my hair out over my stupid Logitech Harmony Hub.

    • The app is slow

    • The app crashes constantly

    • The app needs to talk to its stupid Wi-Fi servers to do anything

    • Everything has to be an activity

    • The activity doesn't even start correctly half the time, with the app just spitting out an error message

    • There are 2 Harmony "helpers" in Google Assistant, which confuses the heck out of my Google Homes because Logitech just decided to make a new one randomly one day

    • My devices frequently don't get the proper inputs

    • I have devices in more than 1 room and have to use third-party IR bridges to connect them to the same Harmony Hub

    • I feel like one day Harmony will kill their stupid app and my hub will just be a paperweight

I am just sick and tired of dealing with it. Every time I try to look up alternatives, I just see Z-Wave to IR hubs which are sold out (which is a shame, since I have a Raspberry Pi and a USB Z-Wave dongle I haven't ever had a chance to use)... and then the next thing people suggest is "Have you tried Logitech Harmony?"

I'm sorry if I sound frustrated. It's because I am. I hate this stupid thing more and more every time I have to add or change a device on it. Does anyone have any suggestions for alternatives?

Help/advice required for building my first smart home

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 05:28 PM PDT

I have just bought my first house and want to take the opportunity to finally put together a smart home ecosystem.

I've been reading about various products online but would love some feedback and advice from this community given my goals and situation. I'm based in Australia, so this may affect some access to products and their prices.

My current hardware being used in my little one bedroom flat:

    • Google home hub

    • Google Chromecast

    • TP-Link Kasa smart Wi-Fi power strip

    • TP-Link Kasa indoor security camera

My goals/ambitions for the new double storey, 3-bedroom house:

    • Smart controlled lighting. Need the most help and advice on this point as there are many downlights throughout the house. I was thinking of using smart wall switches ( something like this ) in order to avoid swapping each and every light bulb/downlight for a smart Wi-Fi connected alternative. Ideally I'd like to be able to switch the lights on and off with the wall plates while also having the ability to do it with voice commands.

    • An outdoor security camera that I can monitor on my Google Home hub and my Android phone. Ideally one that I can plug into power to avoid having to charge it.

    • Smart / digital / keyless door locks – need advice here as there is a screen/security door and then the main wooden door, not sure how to best turn this into a keyless scenario.

And of course I'm welcome to any other suggestions on how to create an awesome smart home! I also need to purchase a Wi-Fi router so if there is one that will be better suited due to connectivity etc, please let me know!

    View devices listed in Alexa

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 10:46 PM PDT

I have an old AC that can be recognized by Alexa (and it's own proprietary app that integrate with other apps). I also have a Roborock S5 that can also only be recognized by Alexa (and it's own proprietary app that also does not integrate with other apps).

Is there some way that I can use IFTTT or any other app to interact with the devices recognized by Alexa so that I can have the AC and S5 interact with other smart devices? I tried creating a routine in Alexa but when I go to New Routine --> When this happens --> Smart Home none of my smart devices appear there! (They only appear under "Devices" in Alexa).

    New home

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 09:35 PM PDT

Pre warning - this probably isn't home automation related, but I figured this was the best group to come to to point me in the right direction.

Just did the adult-ish thing, and am having a house built. Should be done in ~3 weeks. In my infinite wisdom, my office, where I work remotely from, full time, has zero windows. From previous experience, I'm something of a grumpy shit when I don't have some sunlight. I have three light fixtures in the office.

I'm looking to see if there is some type of artificial light that I can put up in place of the current light fixtures, that might mimic sunlight. Any suggestions are welcome, as long as they don't remind me I'm an idiot for not having them put at least 1 window in my office.

Also, I just looked at the rules for this group...what is a Karma Whore?

What's your favorite hackable ESP dimmer?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 08:28 AM PDT

    What's your favorite ESP8266/ESP32 dimmer?

I've got a 100 year old house without neutrals, but I ran the wiring to my dining room fixture through the attic to a closet where I can connect a regular dimmer. Ideally, it would be a panel mount or DIN rail mount, but not a requirement. The current dimmer I have has very poor dimming control and I want to get smoother control for the dimmable LED candelabra lights in my chandelier.

Aqara Cube - side as a condition

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 06:59 PM PDT

I wonder if anyone can help me here. I have an Aqara/Xiaomi cube connected to Home Assistant via deCONZ. I have setup rotations (L/R) to control volume on my media hub, but I want to restrict this to function only when a certain side is 'up'. I can't figure this out via either HA automations or NodeRed...any ideas? The events I get from deCONZ for rotate are the only events that don't include a side like the rotation or tap events do.

    August App missing Auto Unlock

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 05:07 PM PDT

My August app is all of a sudden completely missing the settings for Auto-unlock. That option is just not in the app now. Auto lock, door ajar timing, and doorsense are all still there.

Any reason to use HomeAssistant geofencing over thermostats own app?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 01:20 PM PDT

Aside from either putting it all in one app, or the ability to trigger additional automations is there any benefit to using Home Assistant over the Honeywell Home app? Will either work better than the other for this purpose? Mainly Id just like to not cool an empty house and the automation to put it back when i get home.

Anyway to integrate a live map tracker that my childs school posts in a whatsapp group everyday.

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 01:15 PM PDT

Basically my childs school has the driver share a tracker to whatsapp every time he starts a bus route. It would be amazing if I can get that integration into my Home Assistant and get notified when its near my home...

    Non-Decora style Fan Control?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 04:04 PM PDT

I have a 4-speed (off, high, medium, low) knob-style Fan Control switch that I'd like to automate. I'd prefer Zwave, but honestly, at this point, I'll take what I can get.

I've found plenty of the Decora-style options, but the Decora look and its big paddles don't really fit my house's decor and will have a low SAF (spousal approval factor) if installed.

    Any options?

    Tasmota on Novostella lights

    Tasmota on Novostella lights

    Hi all

Since I got the 13W smart light and 20W floodlights from Novostella, I was looking to make it truly mine. Despite being advertised as Smart Life app products, they work with Tuya. This means - tuya convert was the next step.

I'm pleased to say, both run Tasmota now, are connected to Alexa and Google Gome and come with this Dashboard widget to have full access to the lights options! The procedure is quick, requires no hardware modification and works well:

These are really bright lights btw!

    3-way smart dimmer switch?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 03:05 PM PDT

hello. I've already set up a single-pole smart dimmer using TP-Link Kasa HS220. However, there's another dimmer which I want to make smart. The only difference is that this dimmer is a 3-way switch, so it's controlled by 2 different locations. Right now, both switches are toggles (we replaced the light itself with a dimmable light, which is why I want to install the dimmer switch).

I'm a little confused on what I need to get, though. I read that for 3-way dimmers (in general, not smart), you only install the dimmer switch for ONE of the switches, while the other one you leave as a non-dimmer. So, if I want to install a smart dimmer switch on a 3-way, what do I need to do with the second, non-dimmer switch? Can I leave it as it is (keep the non-smart toggle)? Do I need to replace it with a smart non-dimmer 3-way switch? Or something else?

I'd rather keep the non-smart 3-way toggle for the secondary, but if not, pls let me know what I need to replace it with. thank you

(also, I don't care what brand. I just need to know what type I need to install for the secondary, if any)

    Newbie questions and suggestion

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 11:18 AM PDT

Hi am new to this group
am good with tech in general but just getting my head around smart home setup

i have a question and wondered if anyone can help, i am a full-time powered wheelchair user and trying to make a smart home that helps me i am in the UK
few questions, I am doing this on a tight budget (and will buy things that can help me as funds allow, but trying to make a plan going forward so everything just works)

I have lights sorted along with smart plugs have google nest hub the small one with a screen and the small google home, everything i have setup works through my google assistant (they are all wifi) the lights are RGB Yeelights and work great and have 3 basic plugs to turn on things like fans etc..
i also have the Annke cam floodlight at rear, will be looking for front (light/camers) as i have porch lights wired either side of the door, so a discreet porch camera/light would be ideal (suggestions welcome)
and all show up as separate items in my virgin media hub, (i have named them for easy identification
1, should I buy some sort of hub that these connect to and connect that to my virgin router?
is it more secure that way or are there any advantages to doing this
if so any recommendations for a budget on that will work with most things

I have blinds on windows and have seen the ones that fit on the cords, but all need separate power supplies and could prove messy (any budget answers to blinds? its a bay window with 3 blinds
video doorbells need something (again budget-friendly) that has a decent picture, sound connection and just works day and night local storage is fine and maybe a free limited (couple of days) cloud storage would be good

any recommendations for any smart home devices that prove useful and i haven't thought about would be appreciated
(i have limited mobility and use my phone for everything esp voice commands)
    thank you in advance

Changing thermostat based on indoor humidity

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 10:19 AM PDT

So one of the things I notice is that my family doesnt keep the same temp in the house because they feel warmer and colder based on the humidity level in the house. So, wouldnt there be a simple way to change the smart thermostat based on humidity levels.

Im using DIY stuff along with Home Assistant but I didnt see this type of control in climate template. Is this something anyone has implemented yet?

Smart lock for composite door with bar handle

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 01:39 PM PDT

I've been searching a while for this but can't seem to find any suitable locks. I had a composite door (Rockdoor) fitted recently. It doesn't have a traditional handle, but instead it is operated with the key only (or the thumb turn on the inside). When the door is closed, it latches and cannot be opened from the outside without turning the key. You can also apply the multipoint lock by turning the key a number of times. To open you just turn in the opposite direction. I cannot screw anything to the door and there is no handle to replace. I can only see replacing the lock cylinder or attaching something to the thub turn as an option. Any ideas for a suitable smart lock?

    Motorized shades pre-wire

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 01:21 PM PDT

Hi all, new construction home just framed and wondering if anyone has tips on a super clean install detail for 16/2 termination at each window frame.

I was thinking of perhaps a female DC power jack in each frame where we could just plug in the blinds when we install them at a later date - but can't find any examples or specs on this. Looking at Graber/Bali blinds, inside mount with a drywall return. Would love some guidance or clean install photos! Thank you in advance!

Need help with setting up a few automations (uk)

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 01:06 PM PDT

So I have a caravan which works of 240v when stationary and 12v when mobile.

I want to wire up a 4 channel automation system which can be phone controlled. However I need something that can control 3x 240v AC and 1x 12v DC.

I'm struggling to find a system that can do this for me. I have wired up standard mains voltage automation system before but struggling with this as it need to have AC & DC relays/switches.

It also needs to be phone controlled (smart) as one will be heating controls which is actually 12Volts and I want to enable this before arriving.
