    Advice for removing lightswitches

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 11:26 AM PST

Apologies for my smart home tech ignorance. I am not even sure how to flair this question. I live with an autistic person who cannot stop switching lights on and off. It sometimes keeps him up for hours at night and disrupts everybody in the house.

Is there some sort of solution that would allow me to install ceiling lights that could be controlled by me remotely, without any switches on the wall that he could access or anything that could be unplugged from an outlet?

Is there a smart plug that doesn't require me to download their app? That I can just use straight away with Google Home?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 09:53 AM PST

Hey there. I'm looking for a smart plug that I can do scheduling with and has integration with Google Home.

I'm looking to find one that doesn't require me to download their own app, one that I could just add to the Google Home app.

Would anyone know if this exists?

Anything that can be done with a M&S DMC intercom system?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 12:55 PM PST

Wife and I are buying a house that's got an already installed M&S DMC1 Music and Intercom System with all the bells and whisles, but it looks and feels a little outdated.
I'd love to be able to use the existing wiring and replace or upgrade the system with something that would allow some automation, home control, and bluetooth.

    Anyone know of anything?

    Lockly but with zwave

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 08:46 PM PST

I'm looking for a smart lock that has biometrics (finger print reader), latch (not dead bolt), and zwave connectivity to tie into a residential ADT system. I got close with the lockly secure pro but struck out with the zwave feature. Something has to exist? Ideas? Creative solutions?

Indoor security camera that provide motion detected email alerts?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 08:43 PM PST

Hi, can anyone recommend an indoor security camera that provides motion detected alerts that are sent through email?

I've had my Dlink 932L cameras for 5 years and have enjoyed that service. However, Dlink announced they will discontinue the email service starting in March 2021 so I am now looking for a replacement.

    Thanks

Are there any decent local alternatives to the Harmony hub?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 06:19 AM PST

We have the newer Harmony hub. It works ok, but are there any better locally run alternatives, my issues with the Harmony hub are:

It's really rather limited. The app is missing a lot of basic features and oversights.

It seems like it's super dependent on the internet, every time I change a config setting I get that stupid "syncing...".

There's rather high latencies. When I press a button on the remote there's a significant delay of maybe a few hundred milliseconds.

Does anyone know of any alternatives that can be entirely locally run, that I could preferably still use the Harmony remote with?

Looking for a replacement zigbee RGBW Led Driver

Looking for a replacement zigbee RGBW Led Driver

    Hey everyone,

I'm looking for a way to replace the RGBW LED Driver that came with a lamp I recently got.
Even though it is called a "Smart LED Driver", the app (some proprietary one) it's supposed to work with is just sh**. I'd rather switch the controller and add it to my existing Philips Hue/zigbee setup.

Therefore, I'm now looking for alternative RGBW LED Driver that works with zigbee.
The current driver ("AD-36042-W4CN") is rated for an input of 85-265V AC, and an output of 28-42V@1A, 42W. I don't really need the 85V input since the grid here is 230V AC anyways.

Any recommendation for good zigbee RGBW Led controllers that I could use as a replacement?
    Thanks!

    The current \"smart LED Driver\"

    7 Gang Wall plate replacement - 6 toggle + 1 dimmer

    7 Gang Wall plate replacement - 6 toggle + 1 dimmer

I'm looking to make a move to smart lighting to help make some sense out of our current mess of switches we inherited.

We have an updated kitchen with more common 2-gang switches that seem like they would afford me more flexibility.

Any thoughts on whether Inovelli, Zooz or Lutron Caseta would fit in the 7-gang space. I'd need to line 7 switches up side by side.

We'd be looking for a black faceplate and black switches. It appears all three offer those options.

Separately enjoying all the threads comparing these different solutions. Leaning toward Inovelli for features but Lutron for stability and future-proofing this work.

Will likely use Homekit + Alexa for control and management. Again, interested in future-proofing the work.

Pic attached of this crazy setup. I suppose I can get out a ruler and measure this. but I suspect the space is too narrow for 7 dimmers. Any other suggestions?

    Thanks!

Advice: Making a Franken-thing to interact with home automation system

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 02:36 PM PST

Hey all you home automation tinkerers out there,

I have a needlessly complicated project that I'm hoping to get some advice in. I'm trying to figure out a way to turn an old toy/piggy bank that has a light which glow when you put a coin into it into a motion sensor indicator, which would be triggered by a motion sensor somewhere else in the house through the Smart Things platform. Goal is for the piggy bank to be on my desk, and when the motion sensor is tripped, the light on the piggy bank will light up.

I know I need to add some type of instance switch to the circuitry of the piggy bank light, but I'm unsure of what I need to do to make it a z-wave/zigbee device so I can add it to a smart things routine. My first thought is a raspberry pi, but I've never played with one and I want to know if that's the right path before I get one.

Any thoughts and advice is welcome and appreciated!

Oh, and for the 90s kids reading this, the piggy bank is of Olmec from Legends of the Hidden Temple, so this is a nostalgia project 😁

    UK Lidl Smart Plugs

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 10:30 AM PST

I was wondering if anyone knew where to find Lidl Smart plugs? Having been to two seperate Lidl's and they seem to be out of stock at both which everything else being in stock.

Was really looking forward to adding them to my Zigbee network; does anyone have any tips for getting them. I was thinking about going on Monday morning to try and nab some.

Is it possible to lock a lamp switch?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 10:26 AM PST

The lamp is plugged into a timer and needs to stay on. For some reason, people turn the lamp on and off manually. Is it possible to lock the lamp switch on and not allow it to be turned off? When I search, I'm only able to find a switch lock for a wall switch.

Edit: Thanks everyone! Several answers very quickly. Yet another sub that reminds me why reddit is awesome.

Best solution for accessing PC media and games from another room?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 12:33 PM PST

I'm in the process of moving, and will have a separate office in my new home. I'll have my computer in the office, but I'll also have a projector in the common room, which I'd like to hook up to my computer somehow. I want to use the projector for playing PC games (primarily couch coop games, so up to 4 local controllers need to be able to connect) and watching movies. I'll most likely be able to draw an ethernet cable between the office and common room.

What would be a great solution to be able to do this?

(I know that this is not pure home automation, but I believe this would fit in this sub since my other solution would be to carry the PC between the rooms whenever I wanted to switch activity...)

Kitchen Track Lighting that works with Alexa/Phillips Hue?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 06:26 AM PST

I currently have a 6 bulb ceiling mounted fixed track fixture above my kitchen stove (similar to this). The lightbulbs are those 2 pronged specialty ones that are a pain to replace. The switch it's on is dimmable, but not with led's, they just flicker.

I have smart lights for the rest of my lights on my phillips hue hub with Alexa. I'd like to replace this current track system/switch with one that's compatible with led's and Alexa and preferably doesn't have these frustrating specialty bulbs.

Does anyone have any suggestions for one that will work with a smart setup?

New home here. If i wire my gigabyte connected house with cat6 or above and buy wireless devices that support 801.11ax (wifi6). What type of hub can is appropriate?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 05:11 AM PST

My confusion is here. I understand with zigbee/z-wave that you need a hub (raspberry pi with zigbee dongle) but im confused about wifi6.

Is there any good motion sensor controlled outlets?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 09:22 AM PST

Anyone have any recommendations for motion sensor controller outlets? I want to walk into my closet and automatically turn on my backlighting plugged into the wall.

I've tried "C by GE" plug and sensor, and while it was fast, the configuration (timeouts, etc) wouldn't update without deleting everything and starting from scratch.

I currently have a Wyze outlet controlled by a ring motion sensor, through Alexa skills. The lag is about 5 sec which seems way too long.

Any other suggestions? Motion sensor and plug combos? Is Alexa the slowdown here? Anything faster and more reliable?

Simple, reliable two-way intercom with one-side being touchless

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 01:54 PM PST

I am searching for a simple & reliable intercom system, where one side presses a button to talk, but the other side is always-on (doesn't need to touch button to talk).

If you have a suggestion please help, so far my searches are just showing camera systems (don't want a camera), doorbell systems (don't want a doorbell), or systems that require both sides to press a button to talk.

Senior alert tied into existing systems

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 11:47 AM PST

TLDR: Seeking recommendations for a medical alert type bracelet that would trigger actions in a Google Home ecosystem.

First, the problem. My mother-in-law is preparing to come home from the hospital. COVID related pneumonia. She we'll be on oxygen along with medication for the foreseeable future - at least until the lung problems are resolved.

Her front door is literally six paces away from our kitchen door. This small apartment was constructed with this eventuality in mind. Not COVID specifically, but senior care in general. The bedroom, bathroom, laundry room, and kitchen all have some type of Google smart speaker. The lights, door locks, appliances, televisions, and HVAC are all smart.

We figured she would value the ability to control everything with her voice, but now that breathing is an issue, I'm worried that if her O2 drops while she is on the way to the bathroom in the middle of the night, that she won't have the breath to call out to the speaker to alert us next door.

Does anyone know of any bracelet type accessory that we can tie into our lights and speakers? The ideal scenario is that she presses the button on her bracelet, all of our lights in the house come on, and the speakers notify us in some way that the button has been pressed.

I have SmartThings running the Z-Wave network. That, in turn, is linked into our Google Home.
