Smart plug that can turn on for only a few seconds? Posted: 07 Mar 2021 06:04 PM PST For my hydroponics setup I'm looking for a smart plug or other solution that is capable of setting schedules where every five minutes I can turn it on for just a few seconds (5-10 secs). I have a couple of Kasa plugs which are okay but it seems like the scheduling is limited to 1 min intervals (and it would be a pain to add that many schedules via their app!). [link] [comments]
Posted: 07 Mar 2021 03:13 PM PST New to home automation — have set up a living room as a test space, and will probably be doing a bunch more soon. It seems odd to me that the home automation world is filled with things that go "click". My GE/Jasco outlets and Inovelli switches all operate on electromechanical relays, and my understanding is that that's the norm. I find it a bit off-putting that a very 21st century upgrade makes my house sound like I'm working to crack the Enigma code. Is there really no other option? Is there a good reason for that? What brand to choose for (small) new house cameras / lock / thermostat? Posted: 07 Mar 2021 11:35 AM PST My buddy has a new house and wants a doorbell cam, 2-3 extra (powered not battery) outdoor cams, thermostat control, and maybe remote unlocking for a door. Online view for cameras, and some cloud backup for the cameras. Doesn't need an alarm per se, maybe later. I have been helping them search and I can't figure out what brand would be best for this stuff - because I get different recommendations for each. For example I've read reviews that these are (arguably) the best for each function: Nest thermostat, Ring doorbell cam, Arlo outdoor cams, Kwikset door unlock. There's no way that's efficient. Does anyone recommend a single brand to handle all this - or at most two? (They were going with Wyze cameras and doorbell until they learned the outdoor cameras are battery powered; cameras will be mounted up high and no one wants to climb a ladder every month to change a battery.) Help a recovering ZWave junkie: Selecting new smart switches for whole-home retrofit. Posted: 07 Mar 2021 05:47 AM PST Hey! I'm a recovering ZWave junkie. I think the tech is cool, but I'm not happy with the quality of integration between the modern zwave stack and automation systems. It seems like the best integrations are on hubs that are a pain to use. (looking at you Hubitat) With that said, I'm moving into a new house and this is the perfect time to evaluate changing technologies. What's on the market that doesn't suck? Some general features and requirements I have if it helps narrow things down:
I am not worried about spending some money on this to get a rock solid solution, but I would want it to be DIY capable, so I believe that rules out some of the top shelf systems. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 07 Mar 2021 01:37 PM PST Need some advice. I just started the Home Automation adventure. I have three Echo units spread around the downstairs of my house.... Master Bedroom, Kitchen and Office. I've added 15-20 Gosund WiFi switches or plugs. Intermittently, Echo "can't find" a switch or a plug. First, question? Is this a known problem. Other devices in the house are suddenly have WiFi issues as well. Thus, my guess is that I have to upgrade my WiFi. I currently have an Xfinity Modem/WiFi rental. I am looking to get rid of that and replace with one I purpose. Question.... what the best path? Xfinity compatible modem? New router? Mesh? I want to set this up right... I also plan on many more automation devices. Thoughts? Any help appreciated [link] [comments]
[Germany] Helping a non-technical friend with home automation for a remodel Posted: 07 Mar 2021 01:35 PM PST New to Germany and helping a friend with a minimal setup for her remodel. Given that she wants a system that "just works" has an iPhone (Apple Home app) and is pretty non-technical, I wanted to limit the number of distinct systems in the house that might break. I was thinking about Curious if anyone has an opinion about the Bosch equipment, and if i should use Bosch or Hue for motion sensing (given that the rules will be in Apple Home app) finally, she wants under-cabinet lighting, in the US, I'd use AlloyLEDs "dim to warm" led strip light, is there a good EU supplier for something similar, that would be compatible with Bosch's switches? Something that has a good neutral white at 100% and a nice warm white when dimmed low, ideally a 90+ CRI [link] [comments]
Posted: 07 Mar 2021 10:17 AM PST what are your thoughts on running a security light with no switch and a z-wave relay ? was initially thinking about putting a single gang switch (SMART SWITCH) with two buttons spst to control the flood and exterior patio light , but they don't seem to exist . figured i could run romex through an exterior wall and jump from an outlet inside . relay https://www.enerlites.com/zwn-rsm1-plus.html light [link] [comments]

Outdoor temperature sensor that will display data on Google hub Posted: 07 Mar 2021 03:32 PM PST I have been searching google for about an hour now with no luck. Is there a outdoor temperature sensor or weather station that works with Google home. I would like to be able to check the data on my Google hub. [link] [comments]
Posted: 07 Mar 2021 05:08 AM PST From all the research I did, Inovelli switches seemed to be the best for flexibility and customizing. So installed the fan/light switches, on/off switches and dimmers. The scene control is a huge plus for controlling smart devices powered by a smart outlet from the switch. Also the led notification bar is awesome. For SmartThings I made it so if alarm is armed in stay all the switches light bar turns solid red so I know the alarm is on. [link] [comments]
Why does everyone hate on WiFi smart home stuff? Posted: 07 Mar 2021 07:38 AM PST Maybe I don't know what I don't know as I've never used Zigbee/Z-Wave/etc. before. I really like WiFi-integrated smart home tech and have a bunch of products in both hard mount and removable form throughout my home. After trying a couple different brands, I've found the Kasa products from TPLink to be particularly reliable and easy to set up. So: why all the hate for WiFi? Am I missing something? Automatic blinds/curtain roller Posted: 07 Mar 2021 02:33 PM PST I live in an apartment where the blind's chain is hidden behind a piece of furniture. I was hoping for a solution like this (url at the bottom): a manual click wouldn't be too hard, so I don't need alexa/app control but it would be a nice to have. I know there's a bunch of DIY posts on here, but I'd prefer an out of the box solution if one exists. My budget would be in the 50-80$ region. This seems fine, it's just not well reviewed, so if someone owns one that they know works I'd appreciate a link. Posted: 07 Mar 2021 09:11 AM PST We're trying out a Wiz bulb's sunrise mode, which we really like. But we'd also like to use some of them as 'regular' bulbs at the same time...ideally with some sort of wall switch. Is that doable? The idea: - have a number of bulbs come on in the morning with their sunrise mode - stay on until someone switches them off (ideally via a switch) - later, an ability to turn some of them them on (ideally via a switch) into some sort of 'regular' mode. In our case, some warm white, medium brightness. - a way to turn them off (ideally via a switch) so they're ready to come on the next morning again with sunrise. I've read about the Wiz 'switch' mode that supposedly does something like this using a double-flip of the regular power switch. But I'm not sure if that can work as a second mode. Seems like it will only turn on full brightness. Is there a better way to handle this? Perhaps with some wireless switch that is wiz-compatible? Or maybe I just have to jettison wiz for a different platform? Or...is it just saner for me to buy more lamps...and leave the WIZ bulbs in the lamps set on timers independent of any other switches/lights? [link] [comments]
Need a starting point for a large home project Posted: 07 Mar 2021 11:35 AM PST I'm an starting a project of converting my home into a smart home. I plan on blogging my project progress including the success and failures of coming into the project with 0 knowledge of home automation so the next person to come along trying the same thing might be able to leverage my learnings. First, a little context: I'm a new first time home owner coming into a completely "dumb" home. I have a Master's in computer science, so getting down and dirty with the technical side of things shouldn't be a problem - I want to build this system from scratch, including all user interfaces (web, mobile app [android], and dedicated displays). The home has a gas fireplace and baseboard heaters with digital thermostats. We intend on installing a heat pump on at least 1 level to be our primary source of heat. What hardware we are looking to have in the project: - 2 cameras, one at each entrance (outdoors, PoE preferred, not wifi), viewable on-line and recording to a local machine - a smart doorbell - smart thermostats - smart light switches - smart outlets (wall warts or built in, some that work outdoor would be cool as well) - Central media room outputting HDMI signals to the TV's in the house (currently 2, one in basement and one in bedroom) - security system (this is really the only one I'm ok with sourcing to a 3rd party company) including motion detectors and for open detectors - server(hardware and software) to centralize everything What capabilities we are looking to have: - scheduling things like light and heat to be turned on/off - the ability to control everything from the web/a mobile app I build - no 3rd party app requirements for any of the hardware (although 3rd party apps are fine to exist, I just want to be able to build it into whatever I end up building) - Google home/assistant integration What I'm looking for today: - basic information I need to research (services, protocols, platforms, etc) - hardware suggestions (cheap is better, stuff available on Amazon is nice but if it's a name brand piece of tech I'm ok buying it from somewhere else.) I'm also interested in anyone that who's knowledgable in the field who wants to give me gentle guidance when I have questions - I'm not looking for someone to give me answers, just to point me towards where to find them. Any help with anything discussed in this thread would be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments]

Setting up a 2-gang: one 3-way, one regular, both dimmer smart light switches ... help? Posted: 07 Mar 2021 08:41 AM PST Hi. So, this might get complicated but I would GREATLY appreciate help with this one because, oh boy, I'm going to need it. I'm trying to set up two smart switches. One is a 3way the other is regular. Both are dimming. See picture of both smart switches below (left is regular dimmer and right is 3way dimmer): https://imgshare.io/image/20210307-113151.pb4NCO Now this is the complicated bit. See following pictures that show as best I could the current set up that I didn't touch or change yet: https://imgshare.io/image/pb4reP https://imgshare.io/image/pb42N5 https://imgshare.io/image/pb45Eu The left portion side of the box is for the regular dimmer and the right side is for the 3way dimmer. I have tried to understand what needs to go where but I just can't figure it out. Full disclosure, I don't have a electrical detector device thing that I usually see people using, so I can't tell you which is load and which is line. If I absolutely need this tool for this job, let me know and I'll run over to the store immediately and buy one, I really want to finish this job today. I appreciate all help, you guys have been so helpful to me in the past. Thanks! [link] [comments]
IR blaster to automate shutting off office lights? Posted: 07 Mar 2021 01:34 AM PST Our new office has most of the lights automated but there is a section of lights that turn on automatically with a motion sensor and need to be turned off manually with a really complicated remote control system. I tried to teach everyone to shut down the lights as the last person leaves but nobody remembers to do that. Could I get some IR blaster, clone the shutdown signal from the current remote and automate it to shut the lights at certain time in the evening? We currently only have Philips hue system at the office but can also do Apples Homekit. Any suggestions? [link] [comments]
Is my Fibaro z-wave plug failing? Posted: 07 Mar 2021 01:10 AM PST Hello, I have Fibaro z-wave plug with Raspberry Pi 4 USB C power adapter (5.1V/3A) connected to it. My problem is, that even when Fibaro plug is off, red power led on my Pi 4 blinks every maybe 15-20 second. I did uplug it (Fibaro plug) from the mains and pluged back... it did not blink for a half an hour or so, but then it starts again. Is it a failing plug? Thank you. [link] [comments]
Posted: 07 Mar 2021 01:15 AM PST From the UK, and looking for a UK power outlet with specific requirements:
Preferable:
Optional:
I've loved the Shelly range of products, and use them in my light switches. It doesn't translate so well to sockets (especially double sockets). They have a Shelly Plug S which nearly does everything (it's unfortunately not a replacement socket and is EU only). I've also looked at sockets from:
They all fail on one of the mandatory requirements. Is there anything out there that might do this that I haven't seen? [link] [comments] |
