what device would allow me to swap out an existing switch, but not control the outlet its connected to and instead control a smart bulb?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 10:52 PM PST

I have my switch on the wall and it goes to the outlet my pc is on, while where I want the light to be there is no switched outlet.

is there something that can be set as passthrough so the current outlet is always on, and instead of controlling that outlet, it controls the smart bulb?

Shelly Duo - smart lightbulbs with 2 features not often seen on other smart lights

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 04:22 AM PST

    Hey all

If you are looking at smart bulbs, take a look at Shelly offering. I recently got two of them to play with and they come with 2 extra features not often available on other lights:

    • firmware based night mode
    • power metering baked in

If you want to know more about these, I covered everything in details in my article including a couple of things that did bother me:

Any tips for automating a Hot Water Recirculating Pump and Water Heater?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 05:03 PM PST

Any ideas would be appreciated. Basically, we have this pump:

Watts Premier Instant Hot Water Recirculating Pump System with Built-In Timer https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000E78XHG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_S5XQ6JY77MB0QMJ01ED7?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

We need that pump because without it, it takes as long as 5 minutes for water to reach our kitchen and upstairs bathroom.

Right now, the pump is just on a timer to be on all day from 7 AM to 10 PM. I have SmartThings and would like to automate it with a smart plug. Should I do it based on being home or motion controls? Any ideas?

Also, I have a Rheem water heater with WiFi. I can schedule different temperatures during different times of day or use vacation mode. Is it best to keep it at 120 when we are home and lower it at night?

    Any ideas appreciated. Thanks!

Question for making 3-way switch smart

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 04:32 PM PST

As I read a common way to make a 3-way switch (2 switches contains same light) smart is to replace the main switch (where line voltage from main panel connects) with a 3-way switch compatible smart switch.

Upon testing with live voltage detector, I am able to identify the main switch for the 3-way switch. However there is no neutral exists in the wall box. The main switch only has three wires, 2 orange travelers and one blue connects to the line from main panel).

Do I have a rare 3-way switch wiring? Is it still possible to make the 3-way switch smart without re-wiring?

    Thanks.

Making an Home Automation Products Collection Hub

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 03:44 PM PST

I've started a home automation products page. After googling around looking for automation products, I found that all I could find out there were these blog posts of top whatever devices that lead to pretty much nothing or overpriced sites selling their own stuff that nobody knows about.

Then there's Amazon / Ebay which has them but there's no good organization of them. So I set out to correct that and I guess the goal is to make a PC Parts Picker style site but for home automation products. This is still kinda beta, but now that I've got a good proof of concept and idea of design in place, what do you guys think about it? Is there something out there that does this better? Am I missing categories / products? Is this a dumb idea that nobody would want to use? Should I match products to devices that work together? Much like PC Parts Picker would match a processor to a motherboard, I could match a smart bulb to an assistant or a relay to a controller?

I've been thinking about doing youtube reviews for each of these products with a description of how to wire them up and how to use them generally as well. Maybe make review videos for each product that doesn't already have one out there? The best categories to see filtering is in Lights / Bulbs, Switches / Relays and Security / Cameras.

    The site is at https://hoality.com/shop

This is my third post to subs. I asked the mods before posting this and I am here to answer questions and have been answering questions, here's a list of things that are already covered

    • Displaying products from subcategories in parent categories is confusing, that'll be fixed.
    • Manufacturers often have better prices so they should take priority over Amazon, otherwise I just look like an amazon affiliate spammer.
    • Add more integrations like zwave, zigbee and such. I have not yet added many products (total of 75 right now) but after some of these todos are done, I'll be going crazy adding loads of products.
    • There is no good verification of devices compatibility and I don't own many of them, but I plan to add a crowd sourcing method of allowing people to submit if they already own it and how well it works with different hubs or assistants and I'll be adding filters specifically for those if known.

I'm all ears for any suggestions you guys have!

I have a townhome scheduled to break ground later in the year and won't be complete until summer 2022. In the meanwhile, I want to create a home automation wishlist and work with the builder to hardwire/ set things up for optimal HA implementation. Any advice? I'm a first-timer.

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 10:33 AM PST

Hey everyone. After living in random apartments in a VERY old city (Philly), I will be living in a waterfront townhome that is pre-construction phase at the moment. I have the opportunity to work with the builder to add customization and additions to the house. One of the big things I want to nail down is the infrastructure that will drive my home automation.

I'm trying to compile a "wish list" so I can prioritize and plan accordingly. A few things I plan on doing:

    • Cat-6 ethernet hard-wired throughout house that will lead to an "access point" in the garage
      • Going to hard-wire some ethernet ports into the ceiling as well for smart devices that may need to be mounted
    • NEST thermstat and air quality monitoring/ filtration system
    • Smart blinds/ curtains in my bedroom
    • Smart lighting with color change ability
    • Motion sensing triggers for 'night mode' to do low-lit dimmable when im walking around during the early AM.
    • speakers sync'd and embedded in the ceiling (not sure if this is a good placement for it)

Any other ideas? If you could re-build your house from scratch what would you change or build in to future proof and automate your home as best as possible?

I'm open to any ideas and am pretty ambitious when it comes to tech so im not too scared of rolling my sleeves up and reading through some documentation.

EDIT: here's a Link to the floorpan btw to give a better sense of the house design

Yale YRD110 lock not registering manual locking

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 02:54 PM PST

I have YRD110 running great via ZWave. I am able to unlock and lock as expected via Home Assistant. One bug/quirk that I have found is that if I manually lock or unlock by turning the physical knob, the status of the lock does not update. Is this the case for everyone? Is there a setting that can be changed so manual turns get registered?

Do (HomeKit?) smoke alarms that can be grouped actually exist?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 10:32 AM PST

Having been worked up at 3am last night due to more issues with our current smoke alarms, I'm in the market for replacing them all with smart alarms that can be controlled from my phone.

However, the advantage that we have with the current alarms is that they're grouped together: i.e. if the alarm in the kitchen goes off, it will also trigger the alarm at the top of the house.

Does anyone know of any smart alarms that can be configured this way too? I'd prefer them to be HomeKit compatible ideally.

Thanks a lot for your help,

    Pella Patio Door Automation

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 01:43 PM PST

Has anyone tried to attach an August or other deadbolt Automator to a Pella architect door handle. Specifically I like the Pella Spiere handle, but we're open to any of the architect series if someone has figured out how to automate it. I'm unwilling to completely replace the multi point lock system and re-drill to make a normal door handle, it would cost hundreds if it was even possible.

Use Shelley 1L to always keep power to smart bulb but, use light switch to send signal to home assistant to control the light

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 09:24 AM PST

Title says most of it. I don't have an available neutral wire. Would I need a bypass? It's two IKEA tradfri bulbs. Are there any alternatives because shipping is too expensive for me.

    Smart thermostat recommendation

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 01:04 PM PST

I'm new to home automation and looking to purchase a new thermostat for my "smart home".

    Here are my requirements.

    1. Ability to set number of cycles per hour or degrees variance to turn furnace or AC on/off.
    2. Provides runtime statistic such as how many minutes it ran in a day or the raw data.
    3. Needs to be zwave compatible ( controlled using openzwave running on linux )

    4. Nice to have - Ability to control furnace humidifier from the thermostat. Currently I am using a separate automation - Polling a humidity sensor and a smart switch to turn on / off the humidifier.

    Any suggestions?

Roller shutter automation - remote/mobile control options

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 07:05 AM PST

I'm having roller shutters installed this month and I'm wondering what kind of remote options do you recommend (I'm from Europe).

At first I was planning to get Shelly 2.5 for each roller shutter, but I'm not sure if should I go this route. The reason is that people were saying Shelly mobile application is unreliable and unstable. Any thoughts? Or maybe experiences with Shelly?

Second option I was thinking of is Elero wall manual switches with remote receivers + XY-channel remote, but there is probably no option for mobile controls? Also looks expensive as hell.

Roller shutter motors will be Somfy Ilmo WT (without remote control, since I was planning to get cheaper option of remote control that Somfy is offering).

    Can anyone recommend other alternatives?

Transferring home-automation hubs to new homeowner

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 12:54 PM PST

Existing smart home features were included in the sale of my home, so I have the following hubs I need to transfer to the new homeowner:

    • Hubitat Elevation
    • IKEA TRÃ…DFRI
    • Lutron Smart Bridge PRO
    • myQ
    • Rachio
    • Bryant Evolution Connex

I considered just buying replacement devices, leave those, and take these with me, but my new place comes with a different brand of sprinkler that includes HA features, myQ is integrated in the new garage door opener, and Hubitat is a newer model.

I considered just factory resetting all of them but understand some may remain tied to me even after that reset. I recall Wink was that way, but Wink hub was junk recycled long ago because no one wanted it.

I also considered, where I can, to just 'default' username and email to a transitional gmail address, then let the new homeowner take them from there. That may work for some of the devices but not others. Like if I did that with Wyze, all my account and purchase history is tied to it.

In reality, I'll probably need to contact each of them, one-by-one, and kick off whatever process they recommend ... but was seeking feedback from others who have already gone down this road with all these devices.

    Any tips?

Automating lights off when I start playing media

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 12:14 PM PST

    Smart switch question -power outages

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 06:51 AM PST

I've got hue bulbs and find when there's a power outages and the power comes back on, they go to full brightness no matter what setting they were on prior.

I'm not sure if it's cause these are older versions and that's been fixed or not, but I was wondering if smart switches do the same thing? Last thing I want is for a short power outage to light my house up like a Christmas tree.

    Tunnel zigbee over ethernet?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 10:09 AM PST

    Hi,

After tweaking for months my zigbee setup works mostly fine. But some devices which are upstairs and in my garden shed are still flaky sometimes. I'm using ZHA on Home assistant with the Conbee II stick.

Which brings me to my question. I have lots of routers and tried to put them in the right location. However what I would like to have is an zigbee router which can be connected over ethernet. So my connection to the garden shed is flawless and the zigbee router there can retransmitted an good connection.

Is there anything like this? I can't find anything. (Google only brings me to ethernet zigbee coordinators which is not what I'm looking for... I want to retransmit the existing network, not create a second network)
