Best way to automate an old home? and some other questions cause im really new to this shit.

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 09:53 PM PST

I have a old ass home with wires and switches and no central cooling, instead just air conditioners dotted around the house. So my first question is that how can I automate my home without replacing every single light bulb, wiring and so on? I have been looking into home assistant for the main software side of home automation and the second thing that i want to ask is that can i connect my air conditioners to home assistant? Third and final question (for now) is that i have an echo dot just lying around, is there any way that i can use that or another voice assistant to have a centralized voice assistant (that makes sense?), like have microphones and speakers all over the house so i can access my voice assistant anywhere and everywhere?

    Thanks.

Kaiterra - laser egg + chemical - questions and rattling sound

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 09:02 PM PST

just bought the laser egg + chemical based on wirecutter's review. i'm international, so this cost a pretty penny. couple of quick thoughts and reactions.

one - the build quality feels flimsy. plastic case with some component parts. when i turn the machine upside down i can hear some slight rattling - not sure if that is standard or not.

when using the monitor, TVOC always shows as zero. although the quality of the air is 50-60. how is it possible i have ZERO TVOC? i'm in a major international city.

did i get a defect? thanks

How to disable internal relay [Hubitat + Zooz]

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 08:06 PM PST

I bought a Zooz zen21 switch because it has the option to turn off the internal relay so I can use it with smart bulbs but I'm very new to HA so I don't actually know how to get this to work properly.

In order to change the parameter for smart bulb mode I have to tap the switch 4 times and hold which I did so I think the switch itself is in the correct mode but I don't know where to go from there. How do I tell hubitat to turn on/off a specific bulb when the Zooz switch is clicked?

Are there any tutorials on this because I can't seem to find anything?

Tp-link light switches and Unifi Access Points

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 07:00 PM PST

I've been struggling with my Tp-link light switches constantly disconnecting and reconnecting to my 3 Unifi Access Points. I believe I have found a more reliable setting with my Unifi controller and the disconnects have dropped considerably.

You have to set the WPA setting for Wifi to Both and Auto.

    Here's the link http://imgur.com/gallery/amQK163

If this was already posted then I missed it but I hope it helps anyone with the same issue.

buying a robot vacuum cleaner: should i wait or just go ahead?

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 08:05 AM PST

    Hi,

It seems like the Roborock S5 Max is a good option. It sells on AliExpress for ~370€, and on Amazon for ~450€.

    I have a few questions:

    • I can still wait at least 2 months before I move into a new place and would benefit from a robot vacuum. Can I expect new models to come or prices to go down?
    • Provided I find a good seller (good reputation, good comments) on AliExpress, am I alright buying there? I have concerns about the warranty but... I guess I'm willing to take the risk. Any recommendation?
    • Is there any reason why I should prefer another model? I want the mop function. A vertical dock to transfer the dust from the robot to a more user-friendly container would be a plus but it's okay if I don't have it.
    • I'm attracted by custom firmwares and having the robot run locally instead of sending data online left and right.

Is the Roborock S5 Max still a good option with the above points in mind, or should I go for something else?

    Thank you!

Z-wave motion sensors that don't suck?

I have a couple Zooz ZSE40 motion sensors that are driving me nuts with false motion alerts. What are the most reliable ones in the same price range? I don't really need much more than motion for my use case.

    Got some Samsung SmartThings Questions

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 10:45 AM PST

I have a Z-Wave network that is about 95% Jasco light switches, but also a couple of sensors and a couple of power switches. I've controlled it all with a Pi/HomeAssistant/Z-Stick for about five years, but I've finally had it with HomeAssistant. I'm looking to ditch it and get a better hub. The Samsung hub seems pretty popular, but I have a few questions:

    1) I see it touts a phone app to control it, but does it have a web interface? 2) Is there any voice integration like Alexa? 3) Is it dependent on a cloud service or Samsung account to use? 4) Any subscription fees?

    Thanks!

Looking for ANY developer tools/docs for a smart light bulb from Aliexpress

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 12:09 PM PST

    Hi everybody!

I'd like to create custom application for a smart light bulb from Aliexpress, but I couln't find any developer information for this specific device (altough for most of the smart devices it exists):

    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000184312813.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.3ca54c4dC5dw18

It's controlled by Magic home - Smart home app which is sadly not equalent with the Magic home application. (For which many dev docs exists)

It's also compatible with Google home and with Alexa (this is why I think some document should exists) so the worts case to controll them trough these tools, but I would prefer to controll them directly.

I was wondering if maybe somebody has this light bulb, or has any tips how to start it. (This is my first project) Basicly what I'm looking for is any development help for this specific bulb (Like api, sdk anything)

I'd highly appreciate any kind of help :)

    Best Z-Wave switches

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 11:57 AM PST

It's been a while since I've updated the automation in my home and the current switches I have are ugly and loud.

I'm looking for new Zwave switches that will allow for something like me pressing it up/down twice to act as a trigger for another device.

    Does anyone have any recommendations?

    Samsung smart locks?

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 03:22 PM PST

    Any thoughts or experience with the Samsung A30 / DR708 / DP 609 ?

The apparently integrate with GA & ST. Any idea if they can integrate with other platforms like HA? Do they require a cloud service for remote access? They seem to be a 'low power wifi' connection.

Building a new home. What are some of the things I can do to make it easier to automate in the future?

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 07:49 AM PST

Coming from a 1904 bungalow in Chicago with two-wire switches, I'm super psyched to have a new-build home (when it's done in 8-12 months).. However, I don't want to bog down the process or the budget with too much automation stuff up-front. What are some things I can do to make sure not to shoot myself in the foot down the road, automation-wise? Any big lessons learned?

Note: Apple/homekit bias, but total comfort with custom/open-source linux rpi/arduino for the fancier stuff, if need-be.

Is it possible to use the intercom function of the ecobee thermostats without linking it to Alexa?

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 02:36 PM PST

I want to replace my nest thermostats so I can control everything locally rather than requiring a cloud connection. I was looking into the ecobee's and was kind of excited by the prospect of an intercom feature, based on my thermostat locations this will be perfect for my house. I started reading up on it and apparently utilizes Amazon Alexa to do this, pretty much going against Local only control that I was hoping to achieve.. I'm still digging around in the documentation, but does anyone know if it is possible to use the intercom function without hooking them up to Amazon? If not, can anyone recommend some thing with a similar functionality?

Motorized Roller Shades - Quieter, Faster Options?

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 08:19 AM PST

Question: We're looking for a recommendation of brands which are notably faster and quieter than the typical Amazon / EBay entry-level stuff. I'd like to avoid full DIY and would prefer something we can just order online, self-install and control locally via wifi, zigbee or 433mhz bridge (no cloud).

Site: We are finishing a full remodel on a new-to-us vacation home which will be locally controlled via Home Assistant.

Currently Testing: Having never owned any motorized shades, we bought one of these Graywind branded shades on Amazon to test in our primary residence. Graywind is one of many import brands that all seem about the same: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07TH8N8X7.

Speed: Speed matters since these will be covering wide 8-foot high sliding glass doors in several rooms. The Graywind works well except we wish the motor was ~50% faster when moving. The Graywind isn't too terribly slow but I've seen a motorized shade in a high-end hotel that was much faster.

Motor Noise: While speed can be specced in inches per second, the challenge is noise is hard to measure in dB and brands which even mention noise are vague. Due to the 3 to 4 week turn-around time, ordering more "tests" before placing the big whole-house order isn't a good option.

Control: All control must be local (no cloud req) because this site has intermittant connectivity. I can control the Graywind with a Tasmota'd Sonoff 433mhz bridge just fine but would prefer control via wifi or zigbee as there's no other 433mhz planned at this site. Ideally, I'd prefer typical Sonoff-esque 8266-based receivers that I can Tasmota. I don't need batteries or solar as there is 5v dc on a USB plug next to where each blind will go (the benefits of doing a full remodel :-)).

    Electric panel question

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 01:41 PM PST

I'm installing a DIY power monitoring solution into my breaker panel.(US - split phase 200 amp)

the panel is full, but on the left side of my panel I have a double breaker that isn't in use. I need new breakers on each phase. so my plan is to remove the double and then move 1 single breaker from the right side to the left. that will give me 2 open spaces, 1 on each side which is what i need. the question is when I move the breaker from the right to the left, i move the black wire obviously. but what about the neutral and ground wires? do i need to track them down and move them to the other bus bar or can they stay where they are?

Wifi Sensor to trigger garage lights

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 08:00 AM PST

    Hello Everyone,

I can't believe there isn't kit out here for this. I am trying to turn on my garage lights every time I open my garage door.
Looking for a wifi sensor compatible with the Smart Life app. Which sends a trigger to the app every time I open the garage door. I can, later on, create a scenario in which I can setup turn on lights every time this sensor gets triggered.
Or if there is a better way that I can somehow tap into the garage door laser sensor or even the button that would be good as well.
    Thank you

    Hallway Nightlight with Sensor?

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 04:09 AM PST

I'm looking to have a nightlight in the hallway but not sure on the setup. I'm currently using Hue for a few lights but I'm new to the product. Could i setup a sensor with a regular light that will use a very small dim if it detects option in the middle of the night?
