Any recommendations for wall mounted tablets with PoE support? Also anyone with experience with the PoE tablets made by Sibo?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 01:18 PM PDT

I have a few of the Sibo tablets - they look really nice and they do not look like an ipad duct taped on the wall. But they seem to be a bit slow (or maybe there is bug in my HA interface - don't know). So I am looking for alternatives, but also looking for anyone who has bought them and has any tips to upgrade them to a higher Android (they have 6) and make them faster in general.

    Many thanks!

Battery replacement of Hunter Douglas motorized blinds makes them unreachable through Powerview app

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 09:29 PM PDT

I have Hunter Douglas motorized blinds, and I have now seen this happen twice - when I replace the batteries, the blinds become unreachable from the Powerview app and naturally also from Home app on iOS.

Anything else I need to do besides replace the batteries and plug the wand back in? For the first one, I had to completely reset the blinds and re-add them to the Powerview app and that's something I am hoping to avoid doing.

LED String Lights and Caseta Dimmer Control / LUT-MLC

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 10:23 PM PDT

I purchased a couple of sets of Brightech Ambiance Pro string lights. They recommend Lutron for dimmer control - which is great as i have some caseta devices in my house already.

Turns out they don't work out of the box and after talking to Brightech support they recommend talking to Lutron and purchasing the an obese wall wart dimmer control that they sell. (lol).

I was troubleshooting it yesterday and found that the lights would work perfectly fine once i replaced one of the LED bulbs with a small incandescent bulb. To me this seems like i need something like the LUT-MLC load adapter, and other Brightech users have solved this same problem by using one.

What i'm wondering is whether a) are there any bulbs that incorporate one of these load adapters into them or b) are you able to install the LUT-MLC at the end of the string light using the female plug that is on the end of the string? Electrically it's the same as installing it in the box wired directly to the load side of the dimmer and the neutral.

I've got it working fine with the incandescent but seeing as it takes up a relatively significant amount of power compared to the total string light load (granted not much power overall) i'm just exploring other options.

Setup: 2 strings of 15x2w LEDs (60w total) connected end-to-end to an outlet controlled by a Lutron Caseta Dimmer. There isn't anything else plugged into the outlet under dimmer control.

Original Behavior: With just the 2 strings of lights plugged in the LED bulbs would be on but very dim. The caseta wouldn't respond at all (no green LEDs, no on/off or dim control. Not able to put in program mode to pair with hub etc - i thought it was broken.

Fix: After replacing 1 bulb with a low wattage incandescent it works perfectly fine - full bright / dim control, functioning caseta programming and control.

Shelly 2.5 Wiring three way switch

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 08:27 PM PDT

So I am guessing the answer is "It can't be done without running extra wires" but I figure I would ask anyways just in case I am missing something.

My Three way switch is wired up like this with Power --> switch --> Light --> switch as shown in this diagram Here

My Shelly would need to be in the first switch box as that has the incoming power. But I can't see a way to wire it without rewiring the switch a light and removing the three way switches and just wiring it up as a normal switch and light. Or running an extra wire pair up to the light making it more of this type of 3- way switch

In this setup I can just treat the black wire on the first switch in the first box like a normal switch, basically cut it and the side with the light will go to the relay 1 on the Shelly and the side with the switch will go to the SW1 on the Shelly like so.

Also side not to add more limitations that first switch box has a secondary switch and light that I am going to connect up to the secondary relay and switch on the Shelly 2.5, so any fancy ideas of using the secondary switch input is out. :(

    Any EmonCMS users here?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 09:58 PM PDT

I currently have an IotaWatt sending data to EmonCMS to remotely monitor power usage at a cabin so I can submit monthly meter readings to the utility company. About every 6 months I take the current cumulative kWh reading and subtract it from what the meter actually reads to get a base number. It's usually a little high after 6 months so that month ends up being a mostly $0 bill. When I go to submit a reading I take that base number and add whatever the current cumulative kWh reading is in EmonCMS from the IotaWatt.

I'm trying to create an additional feed in EmonCMS that automatically adds that base number to the current cumulative so I can quickly see the meter reading and submit it without having to manually do the math each month.

I tried the below, but discovered that the conversion to kWh was not passing to step 3, so it was adding the base meter reading to the Watts and so it was constantly changing and not accurate

    https://imgur.com/a/7nnErXn

So I tried creating a bogus input that doesn't receive any data from the Iotawatt, and then adding the kWh feed, then the base meter reading and logging into another feed however adding the base number seems to break the process because the meter feed always returns null

    https://imgur.com/a/g9znu7R

Is there a way to do what I'm trying to complete?

Need help installing Meross Three-Way Dimmer Switch

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 11:59 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I have a bit of an issue in installing the three way dimmer switch to control my kitchen ceiling lights.

I know it's a three way switch because there are two spots that control the lights.

The master of the 2 switches works fine on both locations. Pretty simple setup.

Ground Neutral Terminal Red Terminal Black Live

Connect the wires to designated matching ones on the switch. It works perfectly all the buttons and dimming functions perfectly.

However my addon switch is having issues Ground Terminal Red Terminal Black Load

I've connected the cables correctly on this switch as well, however none of the buttons on that switch work at all. It doesn't even signal that it's even on.

I bought these so I can control/dim my kitchen lights from both locations, I don't think the second switch is broken because the light does come on when I switch the load with terminal Black wire... Which I know I shouldn't do, but then the lights flicker in the house and neither switch can control anything (I'm pretty sure it's not safe, which is why I quickly turn the breaker off when that happens)

I know the wiring isn't messed up because I moved the first switch to that second location and it works perfectly as well.

I'm totally up for a different brand that works with smartthings if you guys have better suggestions but this product is 4.3/5 on amazon with many 5 star ratings I don't think it's the product but something I'm doing wrong.

Looking to make my car smart.

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 08:07 PM PDT

Hi r/homeautomation hope this is the correct spot to ask this. if it is not what other places should I ask?

I have done quite a bit of research on this idea however it seems that nobody else has done it and I would like some ideas/recommendations on top of mine.

I would like to make the boot of my car smart via a relay connected to the car remote. I would want it to be controlled via Siri shortcuts. Now I have some ideas that would achieve this, First is to have the raspberry pi zero broadcast a WIFI signal and when I am near the car my phone will connect. Than if I want to open the boot I will tell Siri to open it, this will trigger a http request to a locally hosted web server on the rpi. When that web server is triggered/opened the relay will trigger as well. However I would like the access point to disable once I am in the car to avoid my phone not having internet. My second idea was to use Bluetooth however I have no clue how that would work. What do you think would be the best way to do this? Thanks in advance

Using Automation to fix bad wiring

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 07:49 AM PDT

I just moved into a new house, and the wiring in the house is... odd. Switches that control nothing, lights that shouldn't be tied together, and far too few overhead lights for a northern latitude.

Is there a smart lighting system that can help fix this? Ideally, I'd like to just always keep power on to the bulb sockets, and use smart controls to turn bulbs on and off. I know I can do that with an app, but what I'd REALLY like to do is be able to control with both an app and a physical light switch that doesn't switch power on and off, but sends commands to smart bulbs when pressed.

I know I can do this with a Control 4 or Crestron install, but I don't have $50k laying around. Is there anything on the affordable side like this?

    Flash a Hue lightbulb?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 09:50 AM PDT

Now that you have to pay IFTTT, I've deleted a lot of 'automations'. One of them was flashing a Hue bulb when someone pushes my Ring doorbell. But I actually miss that function. My Ring is connected through HomeBridge. Is it possible to make an automation where a bulb flashes? Tried it with a ShortCut and HomeFlash, but what I want is not possible. Any ideas? It would be great if it works. Also have a doorbell at my garden gate, would be amazing if I could flash a light in the office.

What interesting home automation things could I do with a spare cell phone?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 03:42 PM PDT

I have a spare cell phone that has a separate number attached to it with a free line of service.

I'm thinking to try and turn it into some type of home hub or automation routing service where I can reach the outside of the house via text or some other type of interesting automation that uses a cellular phone. Any ideas?

    MyHeatworks Model 3

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 02:36 PM PDT

Hey was looking for any community members that have done a Heatworks Model 3 installation project. Living in Southeast TX area and looking to install 1 Heatworks Model 3. Put it in, but been discussing with the Electrician about the wire gauge needed. Based on everything I read/researched I need a 3. When I reached out to Heatworks they gave a "boilerplate" answer and were not much help. The electrician is not thinking I will need 100amps of service as it is not "always" on but I wanted to make sure I had plenty of hot water... Advice/insight would be greatly appreciated.

Considering buying a house that has Control4 installed. What are my options?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 10:26 AM PDT

I have been using Homekit with homebridge, hubitat, and some leviton wifi switches. Is is possible to integrate C4 into hubitat or would I be forced to operate within the C4 system?

Any experience and advice on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Dog Bark Deterrent

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 12:58 AM PDT

One of my dogs loves to bark when I let her out. She doesn't even bark at things...just barks into the void. Constantly. You probably know the type. She's well behaved and obedient otherwise. Just loves to bark.

Anyway, I've bought one of those remote controlled beep/vibrate/shock collars. The beep sound is more than enough to get her to stop. Problem is I take it off at night and always forget to put it back on in the morning. I bought a second one, put the original outside, second in the living room, but each collar only pairs to one remote. Now my wife and I need to keep track of 2 remotes. It's just a pain and hasn't worked in general or while were both working remotely.

I was wondering if somebody has recreated this remote controlled beep system for their dogs or some other purpose. I was thinking some kind of IR blaster I could control within home assistant to trigger some kind of tiny siren (don't want to piss off the neighbors) or speaker. I don't mind building it from scratch from an 8266 device or something similar. Just need it to be reliable and available on our phones/HA

Smart Plug without cloud, easy to setup or Tasmota etc pre-installed

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 08:53 AM PDT

I have used an Edimax power switch to automate various things at home while I'm gone.

Due to Covid, I'm gone now for a year already and one of these switches (which turns my backup server on & off) seems to be broken.

I have my parents' help to install a new one but their technical abilities is extremely limited. Of Course, I can't make them flash Tasmota or so.

Does anyone know of a smart plug that: - Does not require cloud access - Does not require an app to be installed - I can set up over the phone with my parents (for example, telling them to connect to the WiFi of the switch ... then I could take over via TeamViewer) - is not crazily expensive (considering that cheap cloud plugs that can be flashed with Tasmota are 15 bucks)

I have a deaf mate at our office that do not open the door when it rings!

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 02:56 AM PDT

    Hello,

So... he is completely deaf, but can lip read. We have a Ring doorbell at our office and we are using Vera as our home automation system. It shutdown all the light and also do some additional things to easy up our day.

I want to so something really simple, just a blinking light once someone rings the bell, but it starting to show as something really hard!

Vera does not seem to integrate with Ring. I've tried IFTTT but they do not integrate with Vera... so i'm a bit lost here...

Can anyone guide me in the right direction?

    Thank you!
