Hey Reddit? Please help?? Want to do a good deed? Can you help me set up a house for an ALS patient?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 07:36 PM PDT

My godfather is one of the most amazing men I know, for his 70th birthday a while back he went ice climbing on Mt Ariat for fun. He just turned 74 last week. ALS is taking him too soon.

He's a geophysicist and an economist and engineer and geneticist and has always worn many hats, Including starting something in Massachusetts that eventually became Earth Day when others picked up the ball and ran with it. Yes I know another professor I think in Michigan gets credit, he doesn't care about that, just that it's become a thing and our world is being looked after. He was a steward of the environment long before it was hip.

He runs hydroelectric sites as a hobby now and is studying AE to help reduce strain on windmills and increase their output. He's a literal genius and is more like a dad to me. I can't even describe him or how much he means to me on here, it would take a book.

I dont know where I would be in my life without his influence and encouragement and all he's done. He's so selfless and just cares about the planet and all its inhabitants, human and otherwise.

Recently he started having leg cramping and some trouble speaking that was misattributed to other causes. Rather swiftly it progressed to breathing issues with a sudden weight loss. At one point before the BiPAP help it looked like dementia from the CO2 overload.

Sadly the diagnosis came in...ALS.... We're calling it Stephen Hawking's disease since he was a physicist as well, it's more fitting. Why this disease takes such incredible people from us I will never know. It's always fatal.

His progression is moving incredibly fast- he's now needing breathing help nearly 24 hrs a day when he just got the machine a month or so ago. Where Hawkins had decades, we may have a year or so left.

My plea to all you who possess incredible knowledge is to help me get automation systems in place at both his homes so that he can enjoy every possible moment and perhaps live a bit longer. I want to help take as much of the burden of his and his equally incredible wife's shoulders.

Please know my knowledge is as limited as can be, we have the first echo upstairs and a Google thingy down. We turn on two lights and listen to music and weather reports.

Are you in? I just want to do this one thing to help ease his life.

Can you help if I go into detail about what he needs? I definitely am open for ideas on how to set this up.

His needs at rural getaway are more to automate systems and monitor things like these rolling power outages with the heat wave here in Norcal as well as take care of him some and maximizing his comfort and hopefully allowing more mobility. He can still walk right now.

I just want to help and I don't know how or where to start. He called to check on me because I've been sick (made me cry that HE is worrying about me when he can hardly breathe) and had to go back on BiPAP almost immediately and take a nap. This heat is so bad for him, he just can't take it.

One huge thing I want to figure out is better portability for his breathing assistance so he will be more compliant. He doesn't want to miss things and constantly doing something and can't be tethered in his room with it on a 6 foot hose. The better breathing and C02 control, the longer he'll likely live. I'm not ready to say goodbye yet. This is so hard.

Can anyone please help me design this system and tell me how to implement things to help him out?

TLDRr: my godfather is incredible but is dying of ALS and I'm begging with my own life for help in automating his life and home to make him as comfortable as he deserves. I need your help. I would take his place if I could.

Andersen Yale Assure lock deadbolt is getting stuck

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 10:41 PM PDT

Hello all! Installed these locks on a bi fold and single hinged door for someone today. When we set the single code for both doors they worked fine, the homeowner who is currently residing in Switzerland wanted us to enter about 10 codes for different people and once we started entering the different codes and the homeowner started testing from out of country, the deadbolt would lock up and the only way to get it 'unstuck' would be to take sorry the deadbolt and set it back in the unlock position.

I know it's a Longshot, but could the homeowner being so far away have anything to do with it? He insists we go back, which is about a 45 minute drive from me and fix the issue before Friday which is a bit of a hassle. Any thoughts?

    I built an IOT platform

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 02:58 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

I've been working on an IOT platform for the past few months and it's now ready for launch in an open beta. The aim is to allow makers for focus on their devices, rather than the network that connects them, and then make their device code open if they want to.

The system is built using websockets. The user adds a device on the control panel and configures the inbound and outbound rules (what commands and data can be sent to/from the device and to/from which other devices) and the data mapping, the control panel returns a pair of passwords for the device to use in the handshake, the user uses these in their device code to authenticate the connection. As the inbound and outbound rules are configured on the server, you can swap a sender device for another with different data keys and just update the mapping without touching device level code. You can also change which devices to send data to.

I've built a developers page (https://openrnd.co.uk/developers) with information about how to use the system, and a link to a gitlab repo with sample device code in python. I will be making tutorials for different devices and sharing the code for them too. I have a few things in the pipeline for future features, including being able to make control panels for devices with data displays, and saving device output data directly to a database.

If you'd like to try it out the site is https://openrnd.co.uk and the Beta Key at the moment is 612FF9FF6AFD7, this will change regularly so let me know if it doesn't work, and in a few weeks I'll remove it completely. The system isn't free, but I've tried to make the price reasonable with no fixed length contract, and you can suspend your account if you want to switch devices off for a while. There is also a 14 day trial.

I know people don't like things being advertised at them, so I appreciate anyone taking the time to read this. This is a project I am passionate about and want to put my full time in to, but to do that I need to make it commercially viable. That said, if you want to use this thread to chat about how I made the system, how it works, general IOT, or anything at least loosely related I'd be more than happy to have a chat.

    Thanks for your time,
    Tom

Is there a regulatory (or other) reason I can't just buy a device that plugs into an outlet, and I can't place a Bluetooth device directly next to it and have the device "pair" with it?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 08:27 PM PDT

And by pair, I don't mean connect. I just mean get its MAC address and track its signal strength. Does this device exist and I'm missing it? I have an extra Pi Zero and ESP32s that I'll successfully set up tomorrow to track the signal strength of something I need to track the proximity of, but this seems like more work than it should be.

I know Tiles exist, I have a bunch, and that's what I'll be using, but isnt there a market for a home Bluetooth signal tracker that continuously or periodically checks the signal strength of things you stick a tracker to and checks if something is in your own home?

Building a new home, looking for help.

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 10:55 AM PDT

I'm building a new home for my family. It's in a country where we don't have Alexa/Google home/etc and generally have internet issues.

I'm looking to build an automation solution that is based on local network and controlled by a tablet or multiple tablets potentially.

I'd love to be able to pick someone's brain on things we need to build into the infrastructure of the home, in terms of wiring etc. And how I might go about the automation process. Or if someone can point me to the correct resources that I can read/learn from.

    Thanks!

Best 360 degree with audio security camera? That allows to zoom in out. Etc

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 04:40 PM PDT

Need a small LAN only network. Just cameras.

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 03:57 PM PDT

I live in a very rural area with terrible internet access and abysmal cell service.

A friend of mine wants to set up cameras on one of his builds used in his farming operation. He wants to be able to visually monitor some of the equipment as it runs without having to climb ladders etc.

What would you all recommend for hardware and software? We will need a LAN only solution since there won't be internet or cell service.

We are also in Canada, so cameras would have to withstand some pretty cold operating temperatures.

Also if there's a more appropriate subreddit where I could ask this, feel free to direct me.

    Fridge with API access

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 10:34 AM PDT

Hi, I'm looking to purchase fridge that I would be able to integrate with home automation system, the same way I can control LG TV for example
Most of products available on the market are only controlled through some manufacturer's mobile apps...

I was thinking of buying LG Smart ThinQ™ fridge, but access to their API is only available to "LG b2b partners", which you can't really become:
    https://thinqcloud.developer.lge.com/en/
Would there be anything with accessible API on the market?

    Wall dashboard OS/App

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 08:05 AM PDT

Hey guys, I came across these this morning and really thought the idea was great. The thing is that I own a Pi and a monitor, I can't believe there isn't already something open source that does something similar (like a whole os or a webased app)? Ideally I would've like to have a digital calendar connected to my iCloud/Google calendars, some photo slideshow and, if possible, seeing Homebridge accessories.

Do you know some open source projects I could use? I'm thinking about building one myself but I would've love to know what already exists.

    New Roborock Vacuum Cleaner?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 09:33 AM PDT

Hey, So a friend of mine had a Roborock S50 (?) Vaccum cleaner that we could hack and flash a custom firmware on it to then integrate it into Home Assistant. I plan on buying one myself, however now, there are newer models. Which is the latest one that I can flash a custom firmware on (I don't want to run the proprietary xiaomi firmware). Are the new ones any good? The S50 was really good from what I was told, so I wonder if its worth getting a newer model.

    Cheers

    More sophisticated light scheduling?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 11:53 AM PDT

I've invested in Philips Hue bulbs to automate my lighting. I want the lights to slowly come on in the morning to help me wake up and then shift warmer and fade out over the course of the evening to help me wind down.

In my last place, I had pretty good luck just using the mobile app to schedule a series of changes throughout the day, but that had some limitations. This time around, I'd like to do something more sophisticated:

    • I want to set a schedule for what each light should do every day by default.
    • I want to be able to override the schedule—activating a custom scene for a room, or just turning a light off—and have that be respected.
    • When I'm finished with the scene, or I turn a light back on, I want the lights to return to where they are scheduled to be, not to where they were.
    • So for instance, say I leave in the morning and I'm out all day. When I leave, the lights will be white. After I turn them off, I want them to stay off all day. Then when I come home after dark and turn them on, I want them to come on yellow (or quickly transition to yellow).
    • I want to use the bulbs I already own.

Is there a way to do this that isn't too ridiculous? I'm comfortable doing things like setting up a Raspberry Pi, and I know Ruby and JavaScript. That said, I'd prefer to do as little work as possible, and I'd rather not have to roll my own system from scratch.

Shelley Dimmer 2 - UK wiring error

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 06:49 AM PDT

Hi all, I've just blown my Shelly Dimmer 2 presumably because I wired it wrong. I've drawn out below how it's currently wired. Before I go and break another one please could somebody take a look and let me know where I've gone wrong? Currently thinking I should have connected the live wire from the light to the third L on the Shelly?

    Zooz switch reliability?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 07:42 AM PDT

Hi - I am curious about the reliability of Zooz switches, as I'm having some issues.

I started swapping some standard switches in my house to smart ones in Jan of 2019. I started with two Zooz Zen21 Ver 2.0 that I purchased from The Smartest House. I originally had them both in SmartThings, but switched one to HomeAssistant as a test.

The one that I switched to HA failed in June of this year. The physical switch worked, but the blue LED and Zwave radio appeared to be dead. I couldn't remove it and no automations worked. I tried cutting power and factory resetting, but no dice. I have since replaced it with a Zooz Zen21 Ver 3.0.

Now, the other switch that is still on ST is doing the same thing. No blue LED, no response to automation, but the physical switch still works. I took all the same steps - factory reset, power cycle, but no luck. I tried adding it to HA, but it never finds it.

So - my questions are: Have others had similar issues? Did I just manage to get two lemons? Is Ver 3.0 an upgrade that fixes these issues? Should I go with another brand of switches?

    Thanks!

    Freezer alarm

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 07:05 AM PDT

We have a huge deep freezer with an even bigger problem: The closing feature is horrible and things keep thawing. Is there a good alarm system that will work in my freezer and immediately alert me on my phone if the temp increases past xx degrees? Or another creative solution? Thanks!

August Smart Lock 4th Gen question on geolocation auto-locking feature

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 06:32 AM PDT

I've had the lock for a few weeks and haven't been able to test it out in every scenario yet, but I have noticed that the lock does NOT auto-lock when it detects I am outside of the geolocation radius.

I did notice however, that it detects when I enter the geolocation grid and only up until I reach my door handle the lock detects my phone and I can hear the door auto-unlock, which is nice.

But as I mentioned, when leaving my house the door did not auto-lock, even when I was 15 highway minutes away from home. Only once I turned on the auto-lock timer did it start working - but I don't want to use this function as I might sometimes close the door behind me and lose track of time then get locked out of my house with my phone inside the house.

Are there known issues? Or am I doing something wrong? Any help here would be great.
