The August Smart Lock subreddit has 1 mod and is suspiciously locked down so I created a new one

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 11:54 AM PDT

Hi r/Ha, I've been getting increasingly upset that August seems to have basically no interest in supporting Android, and when I went to the main August community (r/AugustSmartLock/) the last post was 4 months ago and the only mod has restricted new posts to only approved members... Which seems really suspicious.

Anyway, I went ahead and started a new subreddit that's open on the chance that other people have questions about the company and they're not being approved to ask them, you can find it here:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/AugustLockQuestions/

Also, if anyone has any suggestions on ideally creating an unlock Android widget (I'm probably going to build one in tasker but that's unreasonable for most people) or even getting auto-unlock/geofencing to work even once, I'd appreciate it. Right now my process to unlock my front door is to pull out my phone, unlock it, open the august app, wait for it to connect, and then push the button. It's faster to use a key.

Cheapest Bright White Dimmable WiFi Smart LEDs?

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 08:13 PM PDT

I picked up these cheap Merkury Smart LED bulbs at Walmart yesterday and ended up taking them back today, because the color output was too yellow for my taste.

    https://www.walmart.com/grocery/ip/Merkury-Innovations-A19-Smart-Light-Bulb-60W-Dimmable-White-LED-Requires-2-4GHz-WiFi-1-Pack/512088827

Is there a relatively cheap Smart WiFi LED that's dimmable and puts out a Bright White?

3 way smart dimmer switch, wifi not available?

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 05:51 PM PDT

I been looking to buy 3 way smart dimmer wifi switch and haven't found much of selection. There is only 1 brand available and reviews are not great. Any reason why companies are not making them? It appears only good selection is by going z-wave.

Hey, everyone. I’m new to this. Whoever answers my question will...

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 12:15 AM PDT

... have my gratitude for life.

So, I'm new to this home automation thing. All I have for now is a new, unopened Amazon Echo Dot 3. In the near future, all I want to do is add a few smart switches and smart plugs.

    Questions:

    1. Do I need a smart hub?
    2. Do I even need an Amazon Echo?
    3. How about IFTTT?

It's a lot of info, and I feel a bit all over the place.

Sonoff S31 Lite (Zigbee) And Microwave?

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 06:35 PM PDT

Is it safe or not? I don't know much about electricity.

But I had a space heater burn out 2 smart plugs, I don't want a third one to go!

I'm sorry if this is a redundant post but is there a wifi garage door opener I can control from Android Auto?

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 04:04 PM PDT

Ideally I'd like to be able to pull up to my garage and hit a button on my car's touch screen to open the garage door. Does such a thing exist?

Android Phone Repurposed as a Smart Hub?

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 06:34 PM PDT

I have an old pixel Xl and a lot of different smart devices. Would it be possible to have the pixel function as smart hub? Are there any guides or resources to do this?

Smart ceiling fan vs smart switch?

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 06:25 PM PDT

I have to replace a non working ceiling fan as well as a non working light switch (that controls the fan). Which is better to replace with a smart version? The smart fan seems better because I can control the lights and fan independently. Whereas the smart switch is cheaper. Any other pros and cons I'm missing?thx

    MQTT transformer

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 04:44 AM PDT

    Hy there!

In the last couple of weeks, I worked on a small mqtt-clock, and build some tooling around it. Probably this is the community that is interesting in my (software) project that grew out of it; https://github.com/tg44/mqtt-transformer

Basically what the readme says but tldr; It can subscribe to topics, do some json transformation and publish things to other topics. For example, it can subscribe to your light sensor topic, and mapping the sensor value to an on/off command to your lamp. It also can construct messages from multiple topics, or repeat the last seen messages, or even rate-limit them. This can be a bridge if both the "publisher sensor" and the "subscriber device" has a rigid json protocol.

If you have use-cases in mind, please help me to extend the examples/recipes. Critics and other ideas are also welcome ;)

Daybetter LED lights not connecting to wifi.

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 03:40 PM PDT

Hi all, I just bought some wifi enabled led lights, but when I try to connect them to wifi it requires a password for me to log in. Once I type in my password is tries to connect but then fails. I'm using the magic home wifi app. My concerns are that the wifi I use requires me to put in a username and password to log in. I've looked everywhere but I can't find a solution. I beg of your help. Thank you in advanced.

I want to use a WiFi repeater with Wyze Cam Outdoor Base Station

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 11:40 AM PDT

Ok so I got my Outdoor cam, and I found that it appears to connect to the base station via WiFi, so the base station is really just a WiFi access point or router (not really sure yet). But it broadcasts wifi, I don't think it is only for setup, I think it is for the cameras to connect to.

So if it uses the wifi protocol, theoretically shouldn't I be able to use a WiFi extender? I just need to figure out the wifi password, scanning the QR code on the bottom of it shows the wifi mac address and some random code like: "mac:address|secretcode|another secret code".

I have tried everything and just can't figure out the WiFi password for the base station, so I can't set up a repeater unless I were to just mirror the signal, but that would probably not work very good.

Has anyone who knows more about this stuff been able to reverse engineer the base station? Also if we get the password, we might be able to monitor the traffic from the outdoor camera(s), and possibly figure that out and be able luckily access data such as the video stream locally if it is not encrypted, and maybe integrate it with things like Home Assistant.

Hopefully this can start someone with a bit more knowledge than me to come up with good ideas.

I’ve connected my google home with home assistant to control my lamp switches (turn them on and off) and it worked, but I wanna add additional features like Add a mp3 clip when the lamp is turned on (the lighting is turned on for example) or music. How can I do this?

    Echo Show 10 or 8?

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 12:33 PM PDT

I'm setting up a new smart home and am choosing between using an Alexa Show 2nd Gen 10" or the Show 8 for my hub. The only existing smart device/system I have is an Abode security system. The biggest difference that might matter to me between the 2nd gen and the 8 is that the 2nd gen has a Zigbee hub built-in, while the 8 does not. I do not want to have to buy a separate smarthome hub--I'd rather just spring for the Echo 2nd gen. If there are common and useful devices that require the Zigbee hub, I would rather have that capability, but if the devices that use Zigbee hub are mostly fringe/uncommon devices and there are enough alternatives to those devices that don't need the hub, I'll go with the 8. Has anyone had experience with this or know about devices that need a Zigbee hub? Would I be limiting myself if I don't have the Zigbee hub?

Update: another option I thought of is to get the 8 and if I need a beefier hub, buy a Samsung Smarthings hub since those are compatible with Alexa (and support Zwave which the Echo Show doesn't). Has anyone paired an Echo with a third party hub, and if so, how do you like it? It's important to me to have as much of my smart home devices as possible centrally controlled so I can control it all through alexa/a single all instead of using a handful of different apps.

SmartThings webCoRE vs Home Assistant in 2020?

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 07:37 AM PDT

Hey, all. Anyone have any recent experience with both webCoRE and Home Assistant, and want to weigh in on pros and cons? I currently have a SmartThings hub and pretty basic setup. I'm looking to invest a lot of time and money into building out my automation in the next year or so, and I want to make sure I pick the right tech. Thanks!

Ground up automation - company to go with?

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 10:05 AM PDT

I am starting to plan an addition to our home. I was thinking about trying to make wifi light switches and practical home automation be par for the course in the new space. I was also going to update things like switches in the older section of the house. So I have a few questions (I have been searching through this sub, but was looking for holistic recommendations).

    1. Is there a brand that would be better than the others? I see things like lutron, kasa, etc.
    2. Same question for supporting equipment - protocols, hubs etc.
    3. What should I automate besides lights?

    Thanks!

    Power Consumption Measurement

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 09:28 AM PDT

Hi, Is there a a smart power consumption measurement tool? What I have on mind is a tool that that measures the power consumption from the device(s) that are plugged into it. I then want to connect that tool with home assistant (via WiFi) to track my power consumption (For that one outlet that I am measuring).

Is that possible? What tools can you suggest me for that?

Anyone get a sensor to work in their mailbox, across the street?

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 08:35 AM PDT

I see many posts here and other home automation subs how they added mail notifications. I can only assume they have a mailbox on their porch. I have a mailbox across the street from me and I'm a good 60 feet from the road (I've never measured).
