    Real Time Home Management System

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 04:40 AM PDT

I am looking into home management systems and wondering if anyone has experience with a HMS which has particularly good real time controls. I have tried OpenHAB but it didn't seem to be up to the task because its CRON rule scheduler could only execute jobs at a periodic period of 1 second. The smartThings hub by Samsung is cloud based apart from a few exceptions with very little of the code executing locally on the hub, instead relying on external cloud functionality. Anyone have any other suggestions?

How to link 7 (!) different heating/cooling systems?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 03:14 PM PDT

New homeowner here. My house appears to have three regular thermostats -- one for central AC, and two for two separate zones of heating. On top of that, we have a ductless mini AC controlled by remote, an electric baseboard, and two electric radiant heating systems, each with their own controls.

And here I figured I'd just throw a couple of Nests in. But now I need to understand:

    1. Can the Nest (or similar systems) even handle this many zones and this variety of equipment?

    2. Are Nuheat radiant flooring thermostats just like any other thermostat or will I have a hard time replacing them with something Wifi connected?

    3. What's the best way to take a device with a remote and integrate it with a Wifi system? Do those kinds of IR adaptors only work on their own system or can they cooperate with Nest, etc.?

    Smart/IoT USB switch?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 08:56 PM PDT

I've got two computers sharing a keyboard and mouse through a USB switch that has a physical button. Definitely laziness but I'd to be able to control it electronically, incorporate it into some automation.

Could someone point me to a usb switch that changes the output electronically? USB preferred, though I suppose maybe there'd be something wifi, zigbee, ir or rf remote. Seems like it'd be a thing, but coming up empty.

    Thanks!

Smart switch help. Which are the ideal for me.

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 08:16 PM PDT

I've got sengled and philips hue everywhere I want them right now.

I still have regular switches so after I have friends over I need to go reset all switches to on.

Or if I get up to go somewhere and don't carry my phone I have to turn them on and off.

I bought the ge enbrighten z wave switches to test out.

Now I'm thinking that was the wrong decision. I don't need a smart switch to control a smart bulb right? The switch turns a dumb light into a smart light right?

What I should do is replace all switches that have smart lights on them with this. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/sengled-smart-light-switch-white/6340420.p?skuId=6340420

Same with the hue lights, I think that same switch works.

I need one that can turn a dumb fan with smart lights into a smart assembly too.

    Thanks!

Edit: Also does the switch still work if the wifi or smartthings hub is acting up like mine is right now? If not how do you remedy this. Can't just not be able to turn on lights right?

Controlling 4 pin pwm pc fans??

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 02:53 PM PDT

Can anyone point me in the right direction here please?

I have several PC fans set up in my AV cabinet to aid cooling of the items inside. I would like to be able to control them within my home smart network. At present am using a alphacool fan controller that uses an app but it is Bluetooth. Having to click into a separate app and wait for Bluetooth to connect before i can turn the fans on is just unacceptable and far to convoluted ;-)

what I have been searching for is a smart wifi controller compatible with google home so i can control them in the same ecosystem as the room lights and so on.

The fans i'm using are 4 pin. pos, neg, rpm senor , pwm signal i'm open to suggestions of possible hardware hacks if anyone can think of something.

I was thinking of using the 12v signal switch on the amp and using an simple controller. but id much rather be able to adjust fan rpm via my phone.

    Any suggestions welcome.

    thanks

Any Yale smart lock experts? Using third party NFC keys

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 02:16 PM PDT

Hey folks. Bought a conexis and a Keyless Connected Yale smartlocks for my house. It seems that you have to buy Yale's own NFC tags to work with these. I'd like to be able to use NFC on my phone or third party NFC stickers to activate them.

Is this possible? Appreciate Yale want to sell their own tags but surely they could be duplicated?

    Vantage

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 07:04 AM PDT

Anyone have any experience with this company? I moved into a house with 6 old dimming modules, the main controller, several touch screens, and about 50 switches. Several lighting zones were only controlled by the LCD panels, there were no physical switches. When the panel started to fail, I called one local dealer, and after paying them to fix it, it was worse off than it had been. I then called Vantage directly and they recommended a dealer 4 hrs away. I paid that dealer approx $30k to update the system, which now does not work. I have lights that I cannot turn off, lights that I cannot turn on, and an approx. $1800 LCD panel which does not work. The company who did the work said it's a Vantage problem and it's up to Vantage to replace the newly installed parts, and when I called Vantage they claim it's a dealer problem and they cannot control individual dealers. I'm at the point now where I want it all taken out and just have an electrician rewire the house conventionally with normal switches. Is this typical of modern-day home automation? Have they just never worked the bugs out of the system? I thought perhaps the dealer had installed old parts or not updated the software, but I haven't been able to have them respond to that question yet

Third Party Smart Dimmer for Hue Bulbs?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 10:28 AM PDT

I have a wall switch in my room that controls the lights as well as a receptacle.

I want to be able to dim the lights without affecting the receptacle.

I went ahead and replaced the lights with Hue bulbs and bypassed the switch that controls them so the power is always on.

I picked up a Hue dimmer to control the lights as a temporary solution but it's not ideal.

Does anybody know of a smart dimmer that fits into a wallswitch-box but controls the hue bulbs wirelessly? All of the smart switches I've found control power to the circuit the bulbs are on.

Bonus points if I can power it via wall power rather than batteries.

The Hue dimmer is a nice temporary solution but I'd prefer something that mounts like a regular mechanical light switch and preferably without relying on batteries. Additionally, the place is a rental so any removable remote controls (like the Hue dimmer) will get lost fast.

Benefits of having an LED strip with WiFi connection vs Bluetooth only?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 03:58 PM PDT

I'm looking at two different LED strips on Amazon, one is the Govee DreamColor RGBIC WiFi wireless strip, and the other is the Govee DreamColor RGBIC that is Bluetooth only. I want the independent control chip for an idea I have, to make a type of time-controlled progress light bar. But what can I do with the WiFi version that I can't do by just plugging the Bluetooth only ones into a smart outlet? Trying to decide if it's worth an extra $10. Thx

ETA: I do use Alexa, if that makes any difference to the answer

I keep leaving my garage door open! ARGH!

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 07:09 AM PDT

I need a sensor for inside my house for when I forget to close the garage door. This is irritating. Luckily its at the back of my house, and not easily recognized., but I live in the ghetto, and can afford for someone to come into it and take my tools.

Luckily it is a detached garage.

Also I think it is time for proximity sensors as well. People do tend to walk onto my property looking for stuff to steal.

    Charging phone as automation trigger

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 02:38 PM PDT

Basically I want to be able to trigger a scene when I put my phone down to charge. I have a smart plug with a USB port that shows when something is drawing power. This works perfectly when I use a cable to charge my phone. However I'm interested in getting this to work with a wireless charger. The Qi charger that I currently have apparently draws enough power when my phone isn't on it that the plug thinks it is charging when it is not. Does anyone know of a wireless charger that doesn't draw power when not in use?

Now I know I can just get an NFC tag and place it near the charger to achieve the same effect but my phone doesn't support NFC. Thanks for nothing apple..

Yale conexis L1 help. Keeps making a spinning noise like it’s trying to but never does unless I manually force it using the knob on the inside, which is obviously no good if I’m going out.

    Moving soon, start over?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 01:56 PM PDT

In three weeks I will be moving out of a town home into my own home. I currently have a google home in every room, use smartthings/hue/harmony for automation. Webcore for the more programmatic stuff. Actiontiles on displays for guests to be able to manually do things and just assume a multipurpose sensor on every door/window and a hue bulb in every socket. I have quite a bit of setup for this town home but will probably be tripling my number of devices and adding in new types such as switches, garage door openers, dimmers, outlets... all the stuff you can't do when you rent. My question is if i should start over from scratch and look at doing something more local that does not rely on the internet like hassio or add on to my current setup?

How do enable other Amazon household members to control smart devices through their Alexa apps?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 09:55 AM PDT

The title says it all. My wife is in my Amazon household, she can see the Echo show, but none of the other smart devices (CE lights, harmony, august lock etc.) We're in Canada and I simply added skills for the different devices to see them in the Alexa app.

A lot of the research I have done tells me to got to the household option on the Alexa app, but I do t have that option in account settings
