240V/30A API friendly remote switch? Posted: 21 Aug 2020 11:18 PM PDT At the moment, I have an excuse to buy or make a remotely controlled water heater switch, researching options. The non-negotiable condition is that it has to be controllable using open and simple API (REST, MQTT, Z-Wave, you name it). The second, less enforceable, condition is that it has to be as dumb as possible and do nothing other than switching (with the only exception being probably energy consumption monitoring, that would be a nice addition). I've already had the GE 14285 on my short list for a while, but somehow it's gone from all the sources I am willing to buy it from, so - what's out there that will do the job? That one is Z-Wave, but I wouldn't mind (and would probably prefer) if the switch was controlled over MQTT, so WiFi switches are not out of the question. Finally, I've got quite a few Raspberry Pis (starting from Zero which will be just fine for this purpose) and probably over a dozen of ESPHome nodes doing all sorts of stuff (including switching lighter loads), so if anyone can suggest a DPST relay that can support 30A/240V load and that would work with either seamlessly enough, that would also be a valid solution. Automating Attic Fan Based in Attic Temperature and Outside Temperature Posted: 21 Aug 2020 03:42 PM PDT I have an attic vent fan that I'd like to try automating— to turn on when the attic is hotter than the outside temperature (and maybe if the temperature is over 90). I was hoping to pull approximate outside temperature from the Internet (my ecobee thermometer also seems to pull that data in from somewhere). Do you guys have any advice on how this could be done? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Mirabella genio smart IR isn't working Posted: 21 Aug 2020 10:54 PM PDT My Mirabella genio smart IR isn't working with my Fujitsu astg09lvca. Basically out of the 23 remote options none work. The DIY option works but not with google home. This is my last ditch effort to try and get it to work. [link] [comments]

diy alternative to control4/creston for home theater Posted: 21 Aug 2020 06:13 PM PDT is there any alternative diy system for master home theater control. my main goal is ease of use for non techy people and the high end user experience without having to spend a fortune or have an integrator come out and install a bunch of proprietary junk. i already have lutron caseta dimmers for lighting and logitech harmony home hub for av control, my media is on plex. right now everything is linked with 5 different hubs including philips hue, lutron bridge, samsung smartthings, and 2 brilliant home control wall panels [link] [comments]

Advice needed - Remote control shutters in hard to reach area. Posted: 21 Aug 2020 05:07 PM PDT Hi, I've been tasked by my parents who are getting some work done on their house to put a remote control on their newly installed shutters. These shutters are up high and have a bar on the side which moves up and down to control the angle of the shutters. What they've been doing so far is using a hook on the end of a pole to adjust the angle of the shutters. What I've like to do is basically motorise it with a remote so the shutters move up and down at the push of a button. I've got experience with electric motors and studied some engineering, enough to know how to create the entire electromechanical system myself. What I'm basically asking is if anyone has ever done something similar? It would be interesting to know if a product already exists on the market for this but I'm keen to do it myself as a little project to keep my tinkering skills up to scratch. TIA. EDIT: I don't have any photos at the moment but I'll get some as soon as I can next time I head round to their place. [link] [comments]
Mr cool minisplit. How do I automate this to work on an always changing schedule? Posted: 21 Aug 2020 12:43 PM PDT I have a homeseer 4 network. I'd like my minisplit to change to different temps, on different days, based on a work schedule that changes weekly. How can I do that with? I don't mind if I have to manually update the schedule. The hours are the same, just not the days. [link] [comments]
Just bought a house, wanting to automate the whole place. What all products work best together? Posted: 21 Aug 2020 04:31 AM PDT Thought this might be the best place to look for help! I just got my first house and I am looking to automate all of it, but I'm quite new to this. I'm definitely technology savy but looking at just what all can I automate? There's the obvious, like hue lights in every room, but just how much can I do to the whole house? I've seen smart blinds, obviously probably Ring Doorbells, etc. Will the alexa be able to hook to all of this alright or should I look into google home? What are some of my security options? (being able to arm it with a voice command would be pretty cool too, probably looking at cameras and sensors) Can I have multiple alexas throughout the house and connect them all together? How many hue lights can one hub handle, enough to fill the house? As you can see I have a ton of questions but if anyone has any suggestions at all I would love to hear them! I'm thinking I'm only on the baseline of how much smart stuff there is but I would like to see what all I can automate throughout the house! I would love to do as much as possible, even if it seems stupid or a really simple thing I might like it! thanks so much! [link] [comments]
Smart LED Strips (Zwave / Zigbee Preferred) Posted: 21 Aug 2020 03:52 PM PDT I would like to pick up some LED strips but i see they get pricey pretty quickly. Can you give me an idea on how to put a package together? I would prefer the controller be zwave or zigbee as i am a smartthings home. I have a 14' by 14' outdoor pergola i would like RGWB LEDs for. I am not sure i need addressable. I also have LED's i would like under my kitchen island (bar stools), and in my master closet. Should I buy a fairly large spool of LEDs? If so, from where? What else will i need? Which controller would you recommend? Do you think addressable would be required? [link] [comments]
LED recessed lighting/dimmer switch troubleshooting Posted: 21 Aug 2020 03:37 PM PDT In my foray into electrical home improvement for my new home, I was successful in using these TreatLife dimmers: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PJTLB7Z/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 with these Edison dimmer lightbulbs in our house (these bulbs came with our house we purchased): This switch/light combo works pretty flawlessly, no issues in adjusting dimming levels or being recognized on my wifi network. And if it makes any difference for later in the post, I have 4 of these bulbs in the receptacle all at once, so when the dimmer is activated or dimmed, all 4 of these bulbs behave the same. So, I thought I'd tackle it with some of our recessed lights that came with the house: So I used the same dimmer switch installation (it installs fine, and is recognized fine by my network). I will say that the switch is only lighting 1 recessed light (instead of 4 or more, as the manual recommends), idk if that makes a difference. So the trouble I'm having with the TreatLife smart dimmer and these recessed lights is first of all the range of dimming is not very good (the lowest dimming on the switch is not very dim, and incremental sliding up on the switch or via the app increases the light only slightly). The other and major issues is probably past 50% mark, as I try to increase the light on the physical dimmer or via the app, the lights just turn off. I tried to adjust the range in the app and the dimmer mode, but to no avail. Past about an upper limit of dimming, the lights just turn off. I'm guessing I have either an incompatible dimmer switch or LED recessed light? Theoretically the lights are dimmable so I'm guessing it's a switch issue? Can anyone care to surmise why this is? I'm curious why the TreatLife dimmer works with the Edison dimmer lights but not these recessed lights? Does it make a difference that the switch is controlling 1 recessed light vs my 4 Edison dimmer bulbs? If it is indeed a switch issue, should I just go with the light's recommended "non-smart" dimmer switch something like this: Thanks in advance for the help and explanations! [link] [comments]
Posted: 21 Aug 2020 03:07 PM PDT Hey guys, I'm looking to step up an area of my home automation projects that I've been putting off. I've taken a look around, but there's no guides for my type of issue as far as I can see. I have a Windows IoT core server running on a raspberry pi, and on that server I have a .NET Core MVC site running with endpoints up the wazoo for controlling everything in my home. I've already made my own android app and web front end so I can access them anywhere on Earth, but I want to really step up the lazy by integrating google assistant (It'll help with usability barriers experienced by the missus). So i'd like to be able to say 'Hey, Google. Ping my home server" and it calls my "...api/meta/ping" endpoint and responds with the message response from my pi. I already have experience with the AI side of things as my day job has me setting up things with LUIS.ai which is similar, so I think I can handle that. What I don't understand is how I can hook up given intents to the URL of my end point, and specify what part of a response I want it to read out. I've found the documentation is very sparse on this kind of requirement, but i figured it must be possible. Any pointers to any guides I can read to help me understand the process? Tinkering with googles back end is a nightmare and I feel i'm never going to stumble on the answer myself... [link] [comments]

Working From Home - Buys Light/Do Not Disturb Posted: 21 Aug 2020 02:29 PM PDT Howdy, Moving into a rental and will be using a second room as an office. I'd like to set up a small LED wireless puck light or similar outside the door of my office that can be turned on when I'm on a call. I know there are lots of options for LED lights with a controller, but I'd like to find a smart solution that I can ask my Google Home to do. I've look through a few threads that recommended some classic office lights with USB but they are pretty pricey for just an on/off light. Wireless would be ideal so I can put in a logical location near the door. Anyone done something like this or have a similar solution for their own home office? [link] [comments]
Wiring a remote to a Raspberry Pi Posted: 21 Aug 2020 08:04 AM PDT I have a "dumb" garage motor that I want to make smart. I already have a switch that detects whether or not the garage is open, however I would also like to send open/close commands. The motor uses a fixed code, not a rolling one, so getting a generic sender/receiver to record and replay the code might work. However, I assume buying a spare remote and wiring that to my Raspberry Pi might be easier and/or cheaper. That said, I don't have any idea what part of the remote's PCB to wire to which pins on the RPI and how then to control that via software. Can anyone give me advice if this is feasible, and where I can read up on how to achieve this? If it helps, I have attached a picture of the remote's PCB. The left-most button is the relevant one. The RPI is a 3B+ with 40 pins. [link] [comments]
Posted: 21 Aug 2020 07:50 AM PDT I was wondering if anyone knew of any decent hdmi switches that would support 4k @ 120hz. I've been looking around and can't seem to find anything. Everything I've seen that offers 4k is only @ 60hz. Any help is appreciated. Thank you! [link] [comments]

Smartthings devices not working with Harmony? Posted: 21 Aug 2020 09:48 AM PDT My Harmony Hub pairs to the smartthings hub, and it shows the smart plug I want to control (subwoofer) but the connection is spotty from the devices list, and when I try to add it to an activity it doesn't work. Thoughts? I might try IFTTT but technically besides the Harmony hub itself, the only common items in between all settings is my dumb receiver and the Hue Sync box (which thanks Hue for not being a trigger) so not sure what to connect it to. Maybe the TV as the trigger? Any insight is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
