Hope this is allowed (sorry if it isn't!) - call for beta testers

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 03:07 AM PDT

Hey guys, hopefully this doesn't count as spam or self-promotion! Sorry if it does, admins please just delete... but basically, we're looking for beta testers for a smart home app and we're paying in Amazon vouchers.

We're a bunch of smart home guys (ex Control4, SmartThings, Fibaro, Neos) - who got together and started a tech-first insurance company catering to smart home users. We're looking for people who have smart tech at home to try out our app and give us some feedback. It's currently limited to the UK only (sorry!). We're offering £100 in Amazon.co.uk vouchers for anyone who completes the programme.

    About the product:

Long story short, we have a tonne of data to show that smart homes are safer than "regular" homes, and that means we can offer super-competitive insurance to people who have certain tech at home. In the same way your insurer might give you a discount for keeping your car in a garage vs on the street, we've built an actuarial model that takes account of the effect of popular smart devices on protecting your home.

Some of it is obvious - smart security, cameras, smoke alarms, video doorbells. Some of it less so, e.g. using smart speakers for simulated occupancy (mockupancy). We're looking at building in things like IFTTT, and integrations with smart banks like Monzo / Revolut - "if I buy a new MacBook, automagically add it to my policy". We've also partnered with some big names to offer members-only discounts on smart tech (the names we've announced so far are Philips Hue and Simplisafe, and there are big ones to come).

Anyway we just got our FCA approval through, so we're green-lit to release our first insurance products either Q4 2020 or Q1 2021. That means we're looking for testers, and if you're a UK r/homeautomation user with your own house you're probably perfect.

The application form is here: https://forms.gle/YH5Gg8MofC7xqbsv6 and there are 100 places, to be selected in October. Please reply with any questions and I'll be happy to help. Thank you!

Edit: somebody actually gilded this? Haha, thanks!

Innovelli Red Switch using regular 3-way switches?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 12:01 PM PDT

So, before I go down this path, I'm reading the info on this Innovelli Zwave switch, and it says it "Works w/existing (dumb) switch."

I'm totally confused on how this works exactly. Does it require everything to be wired in a particular order? I mean, I know I can still turn stuff on/off with ANY smart switch when done in the 3 way, but the complication is if the far end is used, it cuts the circuit to the lights.

Anyone have a picture of this drawn out?

I have 2 switches these are going to replace out at my barn, one is technically a 4-way, the other is 3, so I was trying to figure out the "Cheapest" way to set this up. I was just going to use some tp-link WiFi switches as there's wifi available, but there's a zwave switch in our covered walk-way that also can serve as part of the mesh.

How to make my wifi handle so many devices?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 12:29 AM PDT

Hello! I've been using homeassistant to automate some stuff in the house. I have a bunch of shelly devices for roller shutters and lights, a lot of raspberry pi for sensors, a bunch of ESP32 also... Not to mention PCs, androids, etc.

I noticed that the more I add devices, the more unstable the network becomes. Sometimes random stuff disconnects, sometimes all the devices loose connection and I have to restart the router. My wife complains she sometimes doesn't have internet connection, so that means I have to fix it ASAP... You know how it goes.

As I have over 40 devices connected to wifi, I'm starting to think my router just can't handle this number of devices (it's the standard Huawei HS8247W my ISP uses).

I've been thinking about investing on some kind of mesh network. But I'm still not sure that would solve the problem. It's not a matter of coverage as the standard router is able to cover the whole house. I need something that is able to reliably work with 100+ devices...

    Thank you!

    Robot vacuum questions

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 08:10 AM PDT

    Hi!

On the verge of buying a robot vacuum but the opinions are kinda all over the place as it seems like.
At the moment i'm looking at either the roomba e5 or the xiaomi mi vacuum mop pro as they are both around 370 usd here in hungary and thats kind the max prefered price.

Is there any other I should take a look at? (roborock s4 isnt available in hungary sadly)
Its for a 50 m2 apartment, no high doorsteps, few carpets, wood floor otherwise.

Currently the xiaomi is winning as the e5 went back up in price to around 420, but I have read some bad things about it.

    Thanks,

    Andrew

Best way to smartly control the temperature of my appartment ?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 06:24 AM PDT

Hi, I've bought an appartment and I'm planning to instal a centralized AC system plus a google Nest thermostat for the heating. I'd like to achieve two different things:

    (1) First I'd like to have a smart temperature control (heater+ac) centralized in one thermostat for the entire appartment and I want to know if google Nest is suitable for that.

    (2) Second, i'd like to be able to change the cooling ( not the heating ) on a per room basis. I've heard you can get individual thermostats *(not smart) that could control the grilles (motorized grilles i guess) of the AC of the room.

I need some guideance. Do I need to take a look onto a specific AC brand ? Is what I'm proposing even possible?
    Thank you !

    High temperature sensor?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 07:33 AM PDT

Does anyone know of a network connected sensor that reads say 100°F to 900°F (50°C to 450°C). Remote probe, obv.

I'd love to automate monitoring my wood stove for creosote or over-fire conditions.

Not fussy about brand or protocol. Something affordable rather than lab-accurate would be ideal.

August Smart Lock Pro 3rd Gen Installed on Mortise Lock Door

After being told by support and many posts that the August lock is not possible to mount on a Mortise lock I got inspiration from another user's post Here. So I proceeded to buy the lock and really happy with the final product! If there is enough interest I could provide a guide on what I had done in hopes others may have similar scenarios.

August Lock is mounted on the metal plate.

    Help with Video Feed Ideas

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 07:19 PM PDT

    Here is my dilemma.

My son trains at a local gymnastics club for Trampoline and Tumbling. Given the issues with Covid, we are no longer able to allow parents/spectators in to the gym to watch their kids. (limited number of people allowed in the building by the government) Many parents have not seen their kids train for months. We are looking at ways to stream video securely.

We currently have a video security system with a number of POE cameras around the gym which could likely be repurposed. The security system is a non-starter in terms of allowing parents access, but we could take a couple of cameras off the system to be used.

Our other problem is that we have had to limit enrollment in our recreational programs, so our financial situation is also severely limited at the moment.

So my question is this - what could we do to allow parental access to video streams that they could watch when their kids are training. What would be a cost effective way to set this up. What would we need for hardware - I am assuming a used laptop/desktop would be accessible. How would we tie 2 or 3 cameras to a system? What software could we use that would allow different people access to view different cameras at the same time. We could afford a small outlay of cash (or perhaps raise the funds from the parents) and MINIMAL monthly fees if necessary. I was thinking of purchasing blue iris for myself in the future, so I would be willing to do that myself for the mean time.

If someone knows another reddit sub that this question would be good in please let me know.

    Thanks in advance

Can a CC2531 be used to receiver 2.4Ghz signals?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 07:27 AM PDT

Can a CC2531 be used to receiver 2.4Ghz signals?

Sorry if I'm asking this in the wrong place.

I bought a CC2531 stick for my Zigbee devices, but since switched to a Conbee II. I was wondering if I could use the CC2531 to control my electric blinds, which are currently controlled by a 2.4Ghz remote.

The blinds are HunterDouglas, this is the remote:

    https://preview.redd.it/ix8y6wlmgio51.png?width=2560&format=png&auto=webp&s=fc9f8545c70ad3e8bc3e52f7789662c37ed7fb0a

Is this at all possible since they are both 2.4Ghz, or would I need a different type of 2.4Ghz transmitter and receiver? Any help would be appreciated here.

(The remote also does IR but I've not been able to control the blinds with it yet).

    Thanks!

    Color Loop for Hue Lights

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 06:44 PM PDT

Every night at around 6:30PM I had an IFTTT applet set you turn on our backyard lights to a color loop. It was working great until recently. Around the time that IFTTT launched their Pro capabilities. I signed up for Pro and I've checked my applets to verify that they are working, but now they are just turning on but not doing the Color Loop.

I'm tempted to move away from IFTTT. Are there any other apps that can do the color loop automation?

Convert a mechanical timer to Z Wave smart switch

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 07:05 AM PDT

I have a mechanical timer that controls two different set of lights

    1. Exterior lights
    2. An above garage motion detector light

    Picture of the switch

    Picture with wiring card

Might be hard to tell, but the timer box is just mounted onto the wall, not recessed. Conduit comes in and out of the box for the wiring.

Any ideas on how to convert this to a Z Wave setup? I imagine the security lights don't even need to be on a switch since I think it only activates when it's dark outside anyway.

Trying to think of the cleanest way to convert it.

    Android app for HTPC?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 08:46 AM PDT

    Hey folks,

So...I have a mish mash setup of all things home automation...what I was wondering is..

I have a few hue light bars and really like the Hue Sync. The issue is anything that is not played directly from the computer is not synced. I am not falling for buying the sync box so what I was hoping to do is build a htpc that would run all the media.

The issue I have is the wife and kids are used to just streaming from their phones to the Chromecast.

Is there an app that has an interface that will allow users to access netflix/plex/youtube and launch the media on the PC?

I know it seems convoluted and I am not even sure I know what I am looking for so I figured I would post here and see if those more knowledgeable then me can help

Crazy idea but Video over IP via PC capture cards?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 04:50 PM PDT

There is a growing trend of people switching or buying Video over IP systems from the likes of Atlona Omnistream and WyreStorm NetworkHD over traditional HDBaseT from WyreStorm and Bluestream so I was wondering if instead of having multiple encoders for each source (Apple TV, Sky TV, Cable TV, Xbox etc) you could have multiple HDMI capture cards like the Elgato 4K60 pro which capture full 4K HDR @ Hz on a main PC or server and stream to multiple decoders? You can pick up a Elgato 4K60 Pro for £150 which is somewhat cheaper than Atlona Omnistream encoders which are around £350 each.

Thoughts? I understand it would have to have a beefy CPU or GPU (I don't know which would be more important) and what software to you though.

Feeling like I made a bad purchase.

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 02:39 PM PDT

So on Saturday, I decided I was going to purchase a robot vacuum but I just needed to decide which one. I ended up watching a couple of videos on my phone and decided on the Shark IQ auto empty Vacuum. Now that I've made the purchase I have done a lot more research and I fear that I've made a mistake. I feel like there are a lot better options for the price tag of 550$ with not as many negative reviews. I was wondering what some people here thought of the Shark IQ auto empty system and do you think it was worth it or should I return it and either get the Roomba i7+ or maybe a Roborock. I know I would be spending a lot more for the Roomba but I guess you could say buy once cry once. Just for reference, the vacuum would only be cleaning my living room carpet and kitchen/dining room hard floor. I do have two cats and their litter box is in the dining room where one of them loves to dig and throw litter out the door of his box which means the vacuum would be picking up a lot of litter. I will also be using Alexa with this Vacuum. Any advice would be nice!
