Looking for a relatively cheap WiFi low temp sensor. Posted: 22 Sep 2020 05:48 PM PDT Wondering if anyone has any suggestions as I've spent hours trying to find something. Basically just need a thermometer, either AC powered or with really long battery life, that I can connect to WiFi and have programmed to notify me via email if the temperature reaches a high/low point. I'm in Canada, so it'd need to be CSA/UL/ETL/etc certified, and anything on Amazon is uncertified junk of course. Water sensors, door and window etc are all very easy to find, so I can't figure out why there's such a void for low temp products! Thanks [link] [comments]
what would cause a spike of 4000 watts for just a few seconds Posted: 22 Sep 2020 09:15 PM PDT I just started monitoring my electricity and I see a spike of 4000w twice within 15 minutes of each other. Just curious what home appliance would cause that? [link] [comments]
Do you own a KNX-based system and regret having it? Tell me why, please! Posted: 22 Sep 2020 03:21 PM PDT I need some help making the decision regards my (potential) future home automation system and while I think I know all the good sides of KNX, I'd love to know more about the downsides. Technical issues? Complexity? Costs? [link] [comments]
Can anyone help with wiring please?! Posted: 22 Sep 2020 03:54 PM PDT Sorry it's a little off topic! I'm trying to connect a door sensor to my alarm system, should I be using "common" and "Z1" or "Z1" and "Ground"? Thank you! (I lost my alarm instruction manual 🤦♂️) https://imgur.com/ekmxHX [link] [comments]

Automation to turn on and off ring motion alerts Posted: 22 Sep 2020 01:55 PM PDT I'm new to smart home stuff. I've had hue light bulbs and Google Mini's to control them for a while now. I've recently invested in ring (I know it's not Google but their peephole doorbell works for my home not any other doorbell, plus I've paid for it all now anyway) with the rings, I've also got an echo to be used as the chime so have access to alexa as well as Google assistant now. I live in a busy area and don't want all the motion alerts all the time, however I want to be able to have a smart button or voice command to turn the motion alerts on 2 out of my now 5 cameras on and then off again later. So a little button next to my bed that I press that turns all my lights off and so on but also turns the back garden motion alerts on for specific cameras and then another one that turns them off again when I wake up. I could do it with a motion schedule.. But I work shifts so do night shifts and day shifts and they aren't in a 7 day week, so it makes automation based on time and days impossible for me. I'm not apposed to getting something like smart things if their buttons will work. Has anyone any thoughts on how I could accomplish this? TLDR: I have a Google and alexa house with ring CCTV. I want motion capture on at all times, but I only want motion alerts when I'm asleep which can be any time of day, how do I use a smart button or routine to toggle this? [link] [comments]
Z-wave single gang dual switch recommendation Posted: 22 Sep 2020 11:27 PM PDT Can anyone please recommend a z-wave single gang dual switch for 2 separate light fixture. I tried to do a search and all I'm seeing are wifi switch. Also, i have read a little bit about the dual relay. Will I still be able to manually toggle the switch for any of the lights? How does this work? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Looking for an outdoor Z-Wave flood lamp Posted: 22 Sep 2020 11:10 AM PDT I've been looking forever for a 1600 lumen (~100W equiv) Z-wave smart bulb that I can use on an outdoor fixture that happens to have a switch in an inconvenient location. I'm on SmartThings and most of my home switches and plugs are all Z-wave, so I'd prefer to keep things on Z-wave to extend my mesh. The closest thing I've found is this: https://www.amazon.com/Sengled-E13-N11-Smart-Light-PAR38/dp/B07J6JK2BG/ It even has motion detection, which is great, but its not quite as bright as I'd like (only 1200 lumens), and it's Zigbee. But it does work with SmartThings, so at least there is that... Are there any other options on the market that others have found? [link] [comments]
Posted: 22 Sep 2020 01:30 PM PDT Hi all, newer to home automation but finding that I love it so far. I read through the 'getting started' thread and it was great. HOWEVER... How the heck do I get physical buttons for some things like smart bulbs, etc.? I just want something for like $10 that would work like a switch. I'm using Alexa for most of my routines running skills from SmartLife, Go Smart, PlusMinus, and others. So prefer not to need Zigbee or Z-Wave if possible. Thoughts? [link] [comments]
Posted: 22 Sep 2020 02:38 PM PDT I am planning out an upgrade to my whole home audio system. I did not do the original install, but was done at build time circa 2003. There are 4 zones all with impedance matching volume controls. One zone on second store feeds two of these volume controls, for master bedroom and master bathroom. Master bedroom does have a cat5 cable two it that was used for IR. The system was originally fed by an AV receiver and a impedance matching switch. I would like to convert this to something newer that will allow me to select the source for each room and have Bluetooth connections. Ideally each zone would have its own amp controlled via a cat5. I can route cat 5 to the other 3 zones that done have a cable, and I figure I could just splice the feeds to the speakers. Not sure how an amp will handle the split zone up stares though. I would keep the impedance matching volume control in the master bathroom. Does this sound like the correct upgrade path? [link] [comments]
Posted: 22 Sep 2020 10:33 AM PDT Title kind of says it all, but for more detail: I'm 34 and have worked in tech, design, strategy across many industries. I'm a big time hobbyist with /r/homeassistant and /r/homelab various home automations and always dreamed of doing AV design and install as well as smarthome systems. Now I'm at a point in life where my career has me wanting to shift focus quite a bit from corporate consulting work to something more in line with what I truly love: helping people use technology more effectively. Smarthome and security systems seems like a logical entry point as that's where ive been spending lots of my focus while on parental leave w my first kiddo. I'm curious to hear from the folks here who do this type of work... how'd you get into it? How'd you find your first client? Did you have authority or expertise in the field first or were you a hobbyist nerd like me who found a path forward? I know this is different from the typical /r/smarthome posts so hopefully y'all enjoy that. Thanks for being an amazing community to learn from! Cheers [link] [comments]
Common risks in HA network security? Posted: 22 Sep 2020 11:12 AM PDT I recently got into home automation (HA) and before I finish my setup, I'd like to make sure it is as secure as reasonable. Some background about my setup:
I was planning on blocking Internet access for all HA hardware, except the ones that need Internet to function. I.e. all but Home Assistant for weather information and my vacuum. But I was wondering, what are the usual network risks? What are we usually defending against? I think my solution is good regarding devices sharing my private information with manufacturers, but isn't much help if the common risks would originate from an infected PC in the local network. How to create a motion sensor LED lights for cabinets? Posted: 22 Sep 2020 10:01 AM PDT I am new to all of this, and would like some lights to put under my sink and other dark cabinets so that I can see what's in there when I open them up. Anyone have recommendations on how to do it well and not break the bank? [link] [comments]
Trying to figure out automation solution for lights/fans in new apartment Posted: 22 Sep 2020 11:02 AM PDT Hi all, I'm moving to a new apartment, and as a result my old solution for controlling fans/lights (ThirdReality Smart Switches) isn't feasible because we now have more complex switches. Specifically, see this image gallery for what I'm working with: https://imgur.com/gallery/jC6XVyJ, but in summary:
I'm looking to automate these via google voice and web UI. Here are my other requirements:
Thanks in advance. I intend to summarize solutions from the comments in edits with cost and level of effort (LoE), starting with my current 'best' plan and an alternative, which may have issues and I would love comments on as well: Idea 1: Leviton Z-Wave: Split the dual-sliders, use Z-wave Plus with Hubitat I haven't found a slam-dunk Z-wave single-gang/dual-slider solution, so my best bet is to keep it simple. The nets me consistent control designs through out the entire apartment, requires no extra hub, and stays off the Wi-Fi. Living Room: Pretty standard. Use a Leviton Z-Wave 4-Speed Fan Controller and Leviton Z-Wave Dimmer. Cost is about $100, and LoE is low. Bedrooms: Here, I have to get a bit creative. Take the switched outlets and join the wires with a nut to make it an always-on outlet. Then, move the fan to the freed-up 2nd gang box and treat it like the living room: Use a Leviton Z-Wave 4-Speed Fan Controller and a Leviton Z-Wave Dimmer. Cost per bedroom is about $100, LoE is moderate. Kitchen/Hallways: Just use Leviton Z-Wave Dimmers. Cost is $50 each, level of effort is low. Idea 2: Inovelli Z-Wave: A Z-Wave dual-control/single gang that MIGHT work The big concern here is that my current controls are 4-speed, and these are 3-speed; I don't know how they'll map or if they'll work at all. Also, Inovelli doesn't make a fan-only controller, but I could put a combo in the Living Room and either have a blank gang or something else there. Living Room: This gets tricky. Inovelli doesn't make a fan-only controller, so I either need to combine the light and fan using an Inovelli Single-gang Fan and Light Controller, at $70 and low LoE, or have a different brand of switches here - possibly Leviton Z-Wave 4-Speed Fan Controller and a Inovelli Dimmer, at $83 and low LoE. Bedrooms: Use an Inovelli Single-gang Fan and Light Controller. Cost is $70 per room, and the LoE is low... if it works. Kitchen/Hallways: Just use Inovelli Dimmers. Cost is $33 each, level of effort is moderate. Mods: Let me know if I need to change the flair. [link] [comments]
Thermostat that works work window units AND traditional thermostat hook-up? Posted: 22 Sep 2020 08:40 AM PDT Is there a thermostat that works with window units as well as a more traditional thermostat hookup? We have hydronic baseboard heater that has a traditional thermostat as well as four in-wall(window type) air conditioners. I would like to get them all working together with some kind of smart thermostat. [link] [comments]

Posted: 22 Sep 2020 09:24 AM PDT I have been wanting to get in to home automation for a long time but don't know where to start. There is so many options so many different protocols that they can run off. What is the best? What brands are the best? What is the best to build slowly towards the future? Do you go with or without a hub? I want to add some switches throughout my house as well as outlets. Down the line it would also be great to integrate some water sensors and smart locks. I have a lot of google products throughout my house to control devices. I was originally intrigued by Insteon but am looking on recommendations. Thanks. [link] [comments]
Jasco 45609 Installation Issue Posted: 22 Sep 2020 09:20 AM PDT I'm trying to install a Jasco 45609 smart switch in what would typically be a pretty standard scenario. I'm replacing a one-pole throw switch attached to a ceiling fan on a porch with an LED bulb. This could be my wiring. I live in an old home and have a black and a white wire attached to the throw switch. I have the white going into the Neutral and the black going into the load. (I'm wondering if my lack of a neutral and ground could be affecting the switch.) I flip the breaker on, the light comes on, but is dim and flickering, like if the LED bulb were on a dimmer and not getting enough power. I press the buttons on the switch, and the light won't go on or off, it just keeps flickering. From my understanding, this is strictly an on/off switch, not a dimmer, so I'm not sure if the bulb is a factor or why it's behaving as it is. Importantly, I don't get why the switch won't turn off at all either. I would like to get some idea from others about what the issue with this maybe and if anyone has experienced similar issues, and how they've gotten around them. I've looked around online and I think I'm putting the wires that I have in correctly, and I'm growing more convinced that the lack of the neutral is a serious culprit. However, I'm curious if anyone has run into this behavior in a switch, that it's not shutting off and behaving strangely. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]

Posted: 22 Sep 2020 08:23 AM PDT For a stranger project than I care to describe until it's done: Anyone here aware of a door sensor that also displays how long since the door was last opened? Basically what I'm picturing is a pager-sized battery-powered sensor that just counts up since the last time it was open. (So it would display zero while open and once it closes it just starts counting up.) I assume something like this exists, if not exactly for this purpose, but of course I don't have the search terms that get me anything except app-based stuff. [link] [comments] |
