How much space should I give over to my internet closet? Posted: 23 Sep 2020 03:14 PM PDT Building a relatively small house, and looking to have a closet to contain my modem, router, switch etc and any additional items I may need in the near future. What would be a reasonable minimum footprint for this, assuming I make good use of the vertical space with plenty of shelves? Space really is at a premium, so I really want to keep it as small as I can that's not going to cause me problems in the future. [link] [comments]
Posted: 23 Sep 2020 02:36 PM PDT I have Lutron Caseta with a bridge set up at home. Everything seems to connect and work fine when I am at home on the home WiFi. If I am not home, should I still be able to connect and control my devices? When I open the app on iOS I get a "Connection Failed". Tried looking this up but see no information on the problem online. Basically I would like the ability to turn lights on or off when I am not home, manually without a schedule. Can I do this? Thank you [link] [comments]
Samsung TV Hub and Amazon FireStick cooling solution - SmartThings, Wemo and Honeywell thermostat Posted: 23 Sep 2020 03:11 PM PDT My Samsung TV comes with a hub that gets hot, especially during the summer months. That coupled with the Amazon FireStick also heating up has been giving me performance issues, so I've decided to add a fan and apply a little home automation to it. What I've noticed is that when the temperature in the house exceeds 75 (at least at the location of the thermostat) my electronics start feeling the heat and I can see it in the performance. So I setup a mini high velocity fanand pointed it at the hub that all of my HDMI devices are plugged in to. Then I plugged the fan into Wemo plug and setup my recipes using the new (v3) SmartThings app, if the temperature inside hits 75 it will automatically turn on, if it goes to 73 it automatically shuts off. I've been using this setup for a couple of weeks now and it works like a champ, cooling the hub only when needed. Nothing spectacular but sort of neat to see it toggling on and off accordingly. Posted: 23 Sep 2020 12:23 PM PDT Hi there, I'm in search of some nice options that are not crazy expensive for my new home automation. Right now I have a Hubitat Elevation hub with a lot of z-wave devices, of course would be really nice to have z-wave shade controllers but the only one I found, the Axis Gear is being discontinued and it's pretty expensive. I'm looking to automate about 10 roman shades and I'd like at least for them to be wi-fi and powered by solar or battery, I'd like to be able to schedule opening and closing times and group them together for simple control. I've been looking for cheap options on Aliexpress but there's not a lot of info and I'd like to stay away from anything Bluetooth. Thanks. [link] [comments]

Old house woes and video doorbells. Posted: 23 Sep 2020 01:04 PM PDT Hello! I live in a fairly old brick home and I'm working on getting power run externally for outlets and lighting. While getting this done I thought I would be nice to have a video doorbell wired up as well. Because everything is brick and the thick foundation, the electrician is suggesting running piping and boxes externally. I'm not opposed to this, but it doesn't seem the most astheyically pleasing. I'm looking to see if anyone has dealt with this issues I'm older brick homes and if there care any suggestions or ideas on the best way to go about this. Couple photos below on what was proposed. https://i.imgur.com/5z4pQdu.jpg https://i.imgur.com/WsyZmt3.jpg [link] [comments]
Posted: 23 Sep 2020 08:29 PM PDT Hey guys, quick question I love the harmony remotes, by far my favorite universal remote ever. I just built a theater in my house and Im creating a new home in my google home account to control the lights. I know the harmony hub connects to google home and i can use voice to do one click actions. But if I say google go to Netflix and the one click turns everything on and goes to netflix, would a remote pop up on the google home app to make selection? Or would i need a physical remote for that? Because my plan is to have a tablet in the room, you choose poker mode, theater mode or tv mode and the scenary will change based on that button. But id like to use that same tablet to act as the remote from that same google app [link] [comments]

Is there an alternative for this IFTTT function? Posted: 23 Sep 2020 01:16 PM PDT Hello, I mainly use IFTTT's Maker Event to generate a URL for my smart devices, which I then use the Automagic app on my phone to automate them. Something like this on IFTTT:
But as IFTTT is going to charge a monthly fee soon (and I don't want to pay a monthly fee for something so basic), I was wondering, is there an alternative app/site that can generate URL for smart devices like this? [link] [comments]
Posted: 23 Sep 2020 10:55 PM PDT My partner and I find it useful to have all of our conversations recorded so that we can listen to them later. This is a rather odd desire, so I'm having trouble finding a good device for it. Our requirements: - It needs to be able to record audio continuously, I don't want to have to turn it on and off all the time. It should delete the oldest parts of the recording to make room for new recording, and be able to hold at least the past 2 days of audio. - I need to be able to easily access the recording from a specific time. For example I may want to listen to "yesterday at 10:00", and I don't want to have to jump through a bunch of hoops to do so. I definitely do not want to have to transfer gigabites of recordings to my computer in order to listen to them, so it should either stream to my computer in real time or have its own speakers. - It needs to have good audio quality. I should be able to understand a quiet conversation from the other side of a large room. - It does not need to include a camera, although that would be a nice bonus. - It does not need to be small or disguised. Everyone is going to know it's there. I don't know if this is the best place to ask, but does anyone have any suggestions on what to use? [link] [comments]
Can Samsung smart TV remotes be cloned? Posted: 23 Sep 2020 05:33 AM PDT I have this remote https://www.samsung.com/au/tvs/one-remote-device-list/ Slim silver with mic inside. I'm not sure if it's RF or something else. Not IR. Wondering if an RF 433 blaster can automate it? [link] [comments]

myq-api Garage door opener API for Craftsman/Chamberlain Posted: 23 Sep 2020 09:44 AM PDT Does anyone here use this API? If so, how often do you poll your garage door opener to have current open/closed status? I was thinking about checking it every 5 minutes. Every minute would be nice but I'm not sure what kind of frequency they expect/allow. Is there a way to have MyQ/Chamberlain notify me via my own API? E.g. - the garage door opens and they send a GET/POST to my URL of choosing? I see they do text messages but I'd rather not monkey around with that unless I have to. [link] [comments]

Posted: 23 Sep 2020 05:20 AM PDT I have an old thermostat that I want to replace with a smart one - be it Nest, Hive, Tado, whatever integrates best with my current system is what I will get. I have a programmer linked to my boiler that lets me put hot water and heating to - off, timed, or always on. In an installation guide I watched last night it mentioned to switch the programmer to always be on. I'm just wondering, even if I have the heating set to 0 degrees, would still draw energy from the boiler and have me having a higher energy bill? Or does it only use energy to heat the home to the temperature you have set, and having it set to 0 would mean nothing is being used? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]

How do you run the power to ws2811 holiday lights? Posted: 23 Sep 2020 10:55 AM PDT I've been watching a ton of videos and reading tutorials about how to use ARGB strips for holiday lights. I know how I'm going to implement pretty much everything (including power injection) except for getting power to the start of the strip. Ideally, I'll put the controller and power input in my garage. The issue is that the garage is on the first floor and the lights would start on the second floor roof. According to this calculator, it looks like even if I use 12AWG wire, it'll still drop a whole volt just for the run between the garage and the roof. If I run a line for power injection all the way to the end of my roof, the voltage drop would be about another volt. Is it much of an issue to start the strip at ~11 volts and and the last power injection wire be at ~10 volts (with power injection every 5m, of course)? [link] [comments]

Where can I pick up a RFXtrx433XL ? Posted: 23 Sep 2020 12:58 AM PDT It seems these are out of stock everywhere and one of the vendors said that they are no longer being produced and that a replacement is coming sometime in the far future. Are there alternatives to this transceiver? [link] [comments] |
