Pardon the naive question, but is there not a thing such as a smart light rocker switch? Posted: 24 Sep 2020 12:55 PM PDT Like a standard home rocker switch to turn lights on and off. It would work in exactly the same ways as any household light switch BUT have the added benefit of being able to be over-ridden by other smart devices and assistants? [link] [comments]
Multiple August Doorbells connected to One Lock Posted: 24 Sep 2020 12:54 PM PDT Does anyone know if it's possible to sync multiple August Doorbells with one August lock? I'm trying to replace our 3-unit condo's buzzer system with smart doorbells and a lock and August seems to be the only smart doorbell that allows you to unlock a smart lock from the doorbell video screen. The problem is that we'll have three doorbells for each unit and we want each of them to be able to unlock the front door. If anyone has tried this, or a similar setup, please let me know. Nest protect and Philips hue integration Posted: 24 Sep 2020 11:20 PM PDT Hi all, So I know since nest's transitions with google removed support for "works with nest" as described here. My family has a nest protect in almost every room in the house, we got the products specifically to work with our hue products. As majority of my family is deaf/hard of hearing, (We got these products pre nest transition.) So if the nest protects activates it can wake us up/alert us without having to hear. We upgraded our nest account to a google account due to the nest protects not connecting to the nest app anymore, which removed the "works with nest" functionality. We know there is other products like this which we have tried in the past and used. But preferred the superior hue/nest smart home integration (being able to see the alert if we are on our devices). Since being so invested (monetarily and time) into the google eco system with having 8 protects, nest hello, 10+ google homes(to work with doorbell chime and ios app). Is there any way this integration can possibly be implemented or perhaps a work around to this problem. Even if google made the api public to integrate with phillips public api. I personally know a number of hard of hearing/deaf family's that are in the same boat as us. [link] [comments]
Whole House Fan and Smart Switches Posted: 24 Sep 2020 11:17 PM PDT I have a QuietCool 2 speed whole house fan with a dual switch setup - a 3 way manual switch (high/low/off, not like a 3 way light switch) wired in series with a countdown timer control (1/2/4/8hr, hold). Recently the countdown timer went on the fritz and refuses to stay on. Instead of replacing it with the same part, I'm looking for a straightforward way to add WiFi/Alexa control. The closest topic I found to this was here, but it didn't quite answer my question. I'm considering two options: 1) Leave the manual 3 way switch and replace the timer with a Kasa 2 way smart switch. I'd have to manually select the fan level, but I usually leave it on high anyway. And the Kasa would let me remotely control/schedule/automate the fan, including Alexa. 2) Like with option 1, replace the timer with a Kasa 2 way switch, but also replace the manual 3 way with a Kasa 3 way. The new 3 way would not have an Off setting since it's supposed to be a 3 way light switch, but that can be handled by turning off the the 2 way switch. However, it would allow me to select high vs low. AFAIK Kasa switches should be able to handle the load since they are rated for 15A. Will either of these options work? Pros/cons/alternatives? Thanks for the input! [link] [comments]
Looking for low-profile plugin motion sensor Posted: 24 Sep 2020 12:28 PM PDT I've been using an Echo Flex with the motion sensor connection to control lights in a hallway. I like that It plugs into an outlet low to the ground so it's out of the way. It's also easy to move if needed. The main drawback is having another Echo in the house. Unfortunately it frequently picks up responses that were intended for an Echo in the kitchen or living room. I know I could disable the speech (or set the trigger word to something else like "Amazon") but I feel like having an extra Echo sitting around unused is unnecessary. So a product that I expect exists but haven't found, a motion sensor device with Wi-fi and can be connected to an assistant service. I expect it would be cheaper than the smart plugs which have gotten quite cheap. I don't want it to have any lights on it so no need for a nightlight. Does this product exist? Is there an alternative that I'm not thinking about? If you've used it, how did you like it? [link] [comments]

Posted: 24 Sep 2020 03:32 PM PDT I moved over to home assistant and am quite happy. However, I had delayed moving my Schlage connect lock off the Wink because I knew it would take some time. This past weekend I reset the lock and was going to pair it with the HA. Unfortunately, I hadn't unpaired it from them Wink. Despite the reset and no Wink subscription the Wink will still open and close the lock. I think this is why I can't pair it with the HA (I followed the instructions I could find etc). Whenever I try to remove the lock from the Wink app it immediately tells me it can't reach the servers or something. Is there another way to unpair the lock and Wink? Thanks [link] [comments]

Shelly 1 two-way switch for smart lamp Posted: 24 Sep 2020 09:10 AM PDT I want to control two smart bulbs in plug-in lamps using a two-way switch for the ceiling light. We don't have a light fitting connected in the room, and prefer to use two bedside lamps. I have a handful of shelly 1s and 2s I can use. There is a switch by the bed (three-wires), and one outside the door, three-wires again (https://imgur.com/a/xfDqVsP), with a wire nut of neutrals, so I'm guessing the Shelly is best placed here. But I'm unsure of the wiring I need, as I don't want to control the fitting like I have in the past, just use the switch to control other smart devices. Can anyone point in the direction of how to wire this? [link] [comments]
Posted: 24 Sep 2020 09:03 PM PDT I'm having a home built and I was thinking about having some CAT6A run to certain locations on exterior walls. I have two questions:
Thank you! [link] [comments]
Posted: 24 Sep 2020 04:52 PM PDT I bought 4 smart plugs. One for my outdoor deck lights that were on and old school mechanical timer with no indoor on off switch, one for an extra AVR in the far corner of my basement that controls the speakers on my deck (I don't need to go to the basement to turn it on when I want to stream music to the deck now), and one for a floor light in our sunroom just because. For the Deck lights and the AVR power on off, automation control is great. The sunroom floor lamp is just for fun since I had 2 extra smart plugs. They are all set up to be controlled with Tuya app and Google home. The work great and are magical. I have one more smart plug and have no idea where to use it. I could hook it up to another floor lamp, but it is just as easy to turn a lamp on manually than to scream at google or to open app and use and turn it on. I thought about buying some smart switches, but again, if I am in a room and want to turn on the lights, flipping the switch is actually easier and faster. Maybe a sensor light that turns on when someone enters or leaves a room is a thing? I do have an Nest Thermostat in my closet bought on Black Friday going on 2 years that I have not had the motivation to hook up - the current thermostat is programed to raise and lower the temperature as needed. Any other home automation ideas out there that I may be missing out on? [link] [comments]
Help adding wifi control to ceiling fan, plus wifi LEDs. Posted: 24 Sep 2020 09:15 AM PDT I recently lost our fan remote and instead of going to buy a new one I was thinking a better solution would be to use a wifi receiver and have our phones do the remote job. Now I did a quick amazon search and saw there were some solutions available that would work with google home. My problem is the time I bought one of the cheap Amazon wifi lights from China it had a horrible time being added and to this day they randomly turn on by themselves after I turn them off. I just dont trust those cheap wifi solutions anymore. So does anyone know of a drop in place wifi solution for existing ceiling fans? Also, what's your recommendation for led wifi lights? I'd prefer to steer clear of ones that need a hub but maybe that's the only way for it to be reliable. [link] [comments]
New Amazon stuff including a flying drone Posted: 24 Sep 2020 12:38 PM PDT Amazon announced the refreshes to their echo and echo dot devices, and they are unique, sphere shaped devices. Refreshes to the echo shows as well. But the biggest news has to be the flying ring drone which can fly around a preprogrammed route. https://www.cnet.com/news/amazon-luna-alexa-echo-fire-tv-and-ring-event-everything-announced/ [link] [comments]
Difficulty Level for Smart Thermostat Posted: 24 Sep 2020 07:11 PM PDT Looking to upgrade 2 thermostats to smart, but there are a few concerns. Don't they need to be dialed in temperature wise? Is that difficult? If I throw a smart switch on an existing dumb system and use temperature ranges to swap between heating and cooling, am I risking damage to my AC by using the new feature? Mainly, between my geekness and my father in law's handiness, should this be easy, mildly challenging, curse-inducing, impossible? [link] [comments]
Best site to sell August lock? Posted: 24 Sep 2020 06:52 PM PDT I bought two August WiFi smart locks (in black), but only one of my doors is compatible. The installed one works great, but August wouldn't accept the unopened one for a refund bc I had it for too long. I live in a small town and tried posting to Nextdoor or CL, but no takers. Are there any home automation focused sites you'd recommend? Any other sites? Anybody here want to make me an offer? I'll ship it anywhere in lower 48 states for free 😀 Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 24 Sep 2020 05:46 PM PDT I operate several small businesses and have a Todoist list for each one. It would be really cool to have a plant (or flower) dedicated to each list and every time I complete a task, the flower is then watered automatically. And if I don't complete a task, or get behind on tasks, the flower wilts or dies. Are there any smart watering systems that I could connect to Todoist, IFTTT or Zapier to achieve this? Available August WiFi lock settings in SmartThings and IFTTT? Posted: 24 Sep 2020 05:23 PM PDT I am shopping around for locks and am having trouble finding which settings are available for August WiFi locks in both of these services. Is it just when the lock is locked/unlocked? Or does it know who or if a pin/app were used? I have Abode home security and exploring ways to integrate. Whether directly or via a wifi lock. I could ask either of those groups but I have been a longtime lurker here and didn't want to join another sub just to ask a single question. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
Gemini P-618 alarm system reset Posted: 24 Sep 2020 05:02 PM PDT [Warning: typo in the title! It's a 618, not an 816. Reddit doesn't allow title editing.] Does anybody know how to reset a Gemini P-816 alarm system? I bought the house with this system in it. I called the original installer, but they won't reset it for me unless I enroll in a subscription, which I'd rather not do. That leaves me without user codes to arm it and disarm it. I have already tried entering the master code printed on the control unit's PCB from keyboard #1. It does not work. Is there any way to extract the code without its programming software? Posted: 24 Sep 2020 05:01 PM PDT Okay, first of all thank you in advance for the help. I recently purchased several HS200 smart switches. I am attempting to replace two light switches in my master bedroom. There are in one wall box. One switch (right side) controls the lights and the other (left side) controls a ceiling fan. I have connected the wires as indicated in the Kasa app. I have checked and rechecked the connections. The one for the lights blinks orange/green but I cannot get the lights to go on (either via app or manually). I hear a "click" when I press the rocker but nothing happens. The left switch will not even blink orange/green. It will occasionally blink a blushish/white color but nothing happens. Of note, the right sided switch has copper/black/red/white wires. Although it should not make a difference, I have tried switching the black and red with the two black wires on the HS200. Customer service was zero help. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
