    Driveway traffic control

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 03:08 PM PDT

I have a long single lane driveway and looking for suggestions to avoid an accidental head-on collision in the future. I'm currently thinking of setting up some sort of traffic control system with motion detectors and a green/red light system on each end. If a vehicle enters one end the other end immediately turns red. Any suggestions on what to get to put this together? Completely different ideas on how to implement this are welcome too!

AEP Ohio Shutting Down "Its Your Power" Smart Home Platform

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 11:42 AM PDT

Received an automated message that AEP Ohio will be shutting down their "Its Your Power" smarthome platform on October 1. aepohio.com/itsyourpower Pretty big blow if anyone relies on this service for their thermostats or energy monitoring!

They state that devices will no longer function however, the powerley smart thermostat uses Zigbee (They gave these away for free when the program started and I was able to get two myself and other family members who didnt care about this stuff got two as well for me so I have one in each room of my house to create zones through HA) and as far as I know their energy bridge uses Z-Wave as well although I am not sure yet how to tap into that. The device makes DNS calls to mqtt.pwly.io so it is possible that a local MQTT capture could be made possible to continue talking with your homes monitor.

    Holiday led light strip question

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 09:29 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I am looking for led strips/ropes that I can control which colors are on, but NOT full-spectrum rgb. I want to have separate red, green, blue leds so I can have christmas red/green/red/green or 4th of July red/blue/red/blue. You get the idea. I don't need fully addressable leds, I just need to turn each set of colored leds on or off.

There must be a term for this but I can't figure out what it is. My google-fu has failed.

    Anyone using Homeseer 4?

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 05:29 PM PDT

Planning on getting a house soon and trying to get a game plan for a home automation setup. After doing a lot of research it is slowly coming together.

Then i find a product i have never heard of, homeseer. Looks like homeseer 4 came out recently and looks to be a pretty big update. I found quite of few forum and reddit post about homeseer 3, but not many on 4.

So anyone here using homeseer 4? Is it any good?

I am planning on hosting a solution myself, in a docker container or VM. I am a software developer so not afraid of doing some custom stuff, but i have a new baby, so some quicker setup and ease of use would be nice.

From what i can tell home seer 4 looks like a good option, but would love to hear what people who have actually used it like and don't like about.

Any info on homeseer 4 would be great, thanks!

IKEA Fyrtur smart shades - mod to make solar??

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 11:09 AM PDT

Would it be possible to wire these smart shades up to a solar panel? I want to use them in some high windows and don't want to get a ladder out to charge them every few months. Could I just connect a cheap solar panel to the battery terminals and then mount it to the window?

    Radiator valves recommendation

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 01:18 PM PDT

I'm looking to add valves to all my radiators but don't know what to get as it seems to be more of a mine field than I thought it would be.

I was initially looking at Hive as that's what thermostat I use, but their valve seems like absolute rubbish so I'm steering clear. So I'm back to square one.

Do I have any options where I can use different valves to my main thermostat? Would I be able to use two different companies working in harmony in something like home assistant?

What kind of options do I have?

    Automation for armoured door?

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 04:43 AM PDT

Does anyone have any experience or recommendations for automating the lock for a European/Italian-style armoured door (https://upload.ecvv.com/upload/Product/20125/ChinaItalian_Style_Steel_Wood_Armored_Security_Doors2012531746105.jpg) with support for an API?

I used to live in the USA and had a Lockitron and an August Lock. I now live in Greece, where these armoured doors are very common, and I'm looking to automate it/get rid of the huge keys that accompany it.

Is there some kind of off the shelf solution for these kinds of doors/locking systems?

    Rear Door Smart locks

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 09:11 AM PDT

Hi guys I made a post a few days ago and someone brought up the yale conexis l1. Its basically what I'm looking for, a smart lock that doesnt have a keypad/ is subdued. I have two rare doors leading to the pool/ back yard with those regular handle doorknob/ locks. Basically what the yale conexis l1 looks like. However I can't seem to find it anywhere for purchase, am I being silly and its been discontinued? Also are there any other suggestions for similar looking locks, I looked at level lock but thats more for deadbolts. Thanks,

Best Prices on Home Automation Devices?

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 08:26 AM PDT

I want to upgrade a bunch of the "dumb" switches, lights, lock, etc in my house, and wondering where or when the best deals are? I'll probably be getting a SmartThings hub, Nest Doorbell, Nest thermostat, some z-wave light switches, a few exterior Schlage door keypads/deadbolts, and am opting for Z-Wave technology throughout. Is Black Friday my safest bet?

Google Nest Hello vs. Ring Doorbell 3

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 07:34 AM PDT

I'd like to get either the Nest Hello or Ring Doorbell 3. My current doorbell is battery operated, not hard-wired. Previously the only option was Ring, but Google now has an adapter for their doorbell if it must be battery operated. There are so many varying opinions online, so having a difficult time making a decision. Wondering what you all recommend. Thanks!

    Hello there

I have now the LG GBB61PZFFN.
Is already connected with LG ThinQ and I also added on my Google Home.

Any idea how to set the "door open" alarm (which appears on my phone now) to do a "Fridge Door Open" sound on Google Home?

    Thanks!

Can I use a smart bulb as though it were normal?

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 11:32 AM PDT

I have a smart bulb in a lamp that I power on and off via the normal switch. I know for full functionality the bulb should be powered 24/7 but all I needed from it was to adjust the brightness and temperature and I was set. I know it becomes unreachable via Home assistant or your automation platform but I just want to use it like a regular lamp.

Does it matter if I use it like a regular bulb? Does smart bulbs "lose" settings like SSID/password if it's powered off for extended amounts of time? Do these bulbs not expect to be powered and unpowered 10x-20x times a day?

    Broadlink RM Pro's range?

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 06:56 AM PDT

I'm considering getting one of those to integrate some RF devices (kitchen hood, blind motors), and I wondered if the range of this device using 433mhz (not IR) would be good enough to have it in the living room and still be able to control the blinds on the upper floor of the house.

It's not a massive home (210m2/ 2200sqrf) but built with concrete, brick and mortar. In theiry 433mhz is pretty good at penetrating walls tho.

Since I'm going to integrate this with home assistant and I'm not afraid of coding, if someone thinks there's a better alternative that can do 433mhz please share.

I've seen some people recomends the RFXCom devices, but they are twice the price.
