Posted: 08 Oct 2020 03:27 PM PDT Hi! I have 1 Google Nest Mini, 1 Chromecast, 2 Yeelight bulbs, 1 Tp-link bulb and 3 Tp-link smart plugs. Everything is Wi-Fi connected and I want to add more bulbs, sensors and a smart lock, but my Internet isn't great. That's why I'm thinking to use zigbee ou z-wave devices (good idea or not?). I'd need a hub compatible with the devices I already have and the ones I want to buy. I still don't know what protocol (z-wave ou zigbee) I should use or what is the best hub to integrate all. What would you recommend me (hub, bulbs, movement and doors/windows sensors, smart lock)? Can I control the devices linked to the hub outside home? Thank you [link] [comments] |
[Help] How to automate Hafele Loox LED driver? Posted: 08 Oct 2020 04:56 PM PDT Hi, I recently bought some furniture that has a Hafele loox (not loox5) LED 12v driver and strip imbedded in it, plus a dimmer switch. Here are the exact parts: Loox 12v LED driver: https://www.hafele.com/us/en/product/led-driver-12-v-constant/83374960/?MasterSKU=000000ec00023e7800020023 Loox Soft On/Off dimming switch: https://www.hafele.com/us/en/product/dimmer-haefele-loox-modular-soft-on-off-switching-and-dimming/83389058/?MasterSKU=000000a500011f3a00030023 And the connector for the switch: https://www.hafele.com/us/en/product/driver-lead-with-snap-in-connector-haefele-loox-for-modular-switches/000001190001398e00050023/ Unsure on the LED strip model, but its a fairly basic single color white LED strip. My goal here is to: 1) Replace strip with a warmer LED color, 2700k or 3000k. I can pick up a cheap on off Amazon that looks like it will work for $10. 2) Integrate with google assistant / some smart home app so I can control it through my phone and google home. BUT ALSO keep the built in dimming switch linked above functioning. These should be a setup such that either can turn on/off regardless of which previously turned on/off. 3) super stretch goal: RGB strip. The main difficulty with my project comes with point #2, how do I get that switch and smart home integration both working? As far as I can tell, I have 2 routes:
Any advice or help with this would be much appreciated! [link] [comments] |
How do I pair a FS20Z-1 relay with a new SmartThings hub that was previously paired? Posted: 08 Oct 2020 04:44 PM PDT I just bought a home that has a FS20Z-1 connected to the living room ceiling fans/lights. The previous owner used a Samsung SmartThings hub to communicate with it but took it with them when they moved out. I purchased my own ST hub and have tried pairing to it but not having any success. Per the manual I found online, I pressed the button on the FS20Z-1 three times then held the button down and tried to connect it to the ST app as a generic Z-wave device. I saw this additional note in the instructions: "NOTE: If you have trouble adding the FS20Z-1 to a group it may be that the Home ID and Node ID were not cleared from it after testing. You must first "RESET UNIT" with your controller to remove it from the network. Although adding it to a group includes it in the network, removing it from a group does not remove it from the network. If removed from a group, it functions only as a repeater." Does this mean the relay needs to be disconnected from the previous hub first? I don't believe the owner disconnected the relay from his hub prior to moving. Anyone have any ideas? [link] [comments] |
What platform supports multiple hubs in separate buildings over a wifi or wired network? Posted: 08 Oct 2020 07:13 AM PDT Current smartthings user here, getting ready to move to a new house that has three separate buildings - the furthest one being about 300' away from the other two. I want to have a reliable connection to devices in all 3 buildings, on a single platform. I'm fairly confident that smartthings won't perform well here. Even with strategically placed devices and/or repeaters, I predict connectivity issues. I currently experience such issues with my detached garage, which is only a fraction of the distance away. I WILL have a reliable wifi mesh network between all three buildings so putting a separate hub in each one wouldn't be a problem. The problem is, I'm not familiar with which ecosystems can mesh multiple hubs into a single interface over a network like this. Any recommendations? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Oct 2020 08:57 PM PDT I'm wanting to add a power opener for my double gate that is vinyl so it's very light I have seen the linear actuators you can get my thought is to put an actuator on both sides and in the post add a smaller 12 volt battery with a small solar panel on each side so they are separate. My question is, is there a way to do that with a controller that can also be controlled by a garage door opener universal deal. So I push one button and both would open even though they are different controllers telling each actuator to open? Thank you [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Oct 2020 09:29 AM PDT I know the newer Denon/Marantz models support Google Assistant and other consumer level HA, but I'm curious if anyone has a way to control an older SR6008 with Google Assistant/Home or Tuya. Really just looking to turn it on and off, preferably without killing the power each time. I have been considering doing just that with a smart outlet, and making a command that kills the power and brings it back on (the AVR would then go into standby). Any other ideas? [link] [comments] |
Neutral-less wifi smart switches - horridly unstable? Posted: 08 Oct 2020 07:59 AM PDT So, I've got a pile of UK-format smart light switches in the house. They are all Moes House Tuya touch switches, in 1, 2 or 3 gang depending on the use case. I've got a mix of traditional neutral-wired switches, and neutral-less versions (depending on when a given room was last re-wired, such that I could drop a neutral into the switch box). All have been reflashed to Tasmota and are running similar configurations, connected to Home Assistant via MQTT. All neutral-less switches have a bypass capacitor (supplied with the switch) installed across the light fitting. The problem I have is that some (but my no means all) of the neutral-less switches are horridly unreliable, switching on and off by themselves and generally behaving extremely unpredictably. I have swapped switches out and replaced them, but in most cases it seems that the problem stays with the room rather than the switch, even if I replace both switch and bypass capacitor. Not all of these switches behave in this way - the one in my office, for example, is a neutral-less, two-gang switch and has worked flawlessly since I installed it (it was the first one I installed a test). The switches wired with neutrals all behave impeccably. In all cases, when the switches false-fire, the tasmota logs report that it's due to operation of the switch (rather than, say, a suprious MQTT payload coming from an errant automation) and, so far, I've been unable to provide a decent, stable solution. In fact, my daughter's switch has now been replaced by a manual one as she got so fed up of the lights coming on and off by themselves. I'd love to hear about other people's experiences of this type of switch and what, if anything, you've been able to do to improve their stability. (Edit: clarify that this is a UK install, so square switches are king!) [link] [comments] |
DIY HomeKit with WIFI relay modules Posted: 08 Oct 2020 11:50 PM PDT I'm looking into adding a WIFI relay module behind a light switch with something like this. Would it be feasible to flash a HomeKit firmware to the ESP8266 with an Arduino? I'm assuming flashing said firmware wouldn't require me to use something like homebridge. Also, I'm familiar with programming, but I've never done anything electrical, would the voltage of my light switch work with the module? [link] [comments] |
iHome smart plug switching off and on Posted: 08 Oct 2020 11:28 PM PDT I have had my iHome smart plug for 2 years now and as of today it's been turning off for 10 seconds and then turning back on. I checked what's happening when it does that and it shows it gets disconnected from the internet when it occurs. This is the first time it's happening. I use it for my aquarium light and is plugged into a power bank. Any solutions are helpful, thank you! [link] [comments] |
Smart Light Bulb with smart switch? Posted: 08 Oct 2020 11:24 PM PDT Does anyone make a smart light bulb that only works when there is power from the main switch turned on? Halloween is coming and I'd like to swap out the light bulbs in front of my house with RGBW bulbs. The lights are currently controlled by a smart switch, so the on/off functionality is already controlled by my smart home, so I am only wanting a bulb that will allow me to control the colors. From looking at most bulbs, you can turn them on/off regardless of the switch, however I want the physical wall switch to always turn them on regardless of whether my smart home is working or not. I'm looking for a bulb that if switched off via a phone app or home assistant will always turn on when the wall switch is pressed, does this exist? Yes I know I could write an automation in home assistant that flips it on when the smart switch is pushed, but I want something that would work whether home assistant is online or offline. Posted: 08 Oct 2020 01:59 PM PDT Hello, I have an oil boiler (I'm in Belgium), and have an old thermostat running on 2 AA battery. I don't have a 220V access in the wall, just 2 wires connected to the boiler. I'm looking for a connected thermostat, but for which I wouldn't need a power source, so running on battery. I don't think the Nest or the Netatmo are offering this kind of model. Any suggestion? Thanks :-) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Oct 2020 12:59 PM PDT What I understand is:
The first variant essentially permanently creates or breaks a circuit, but the second varienty works with a "latching switch" behind it. Essentially another switch, and it's this switch that then works like the first variant and permanently creates or break an electrical circuit. Now I've been reading here that people have problem when they have the first variety of dumb switch and then make it smart by building in a relay (like a Shelly) behind it. Problem being that the Shelly can be activated via Wifi to be on/off, and the switch itself can be activated to be on/off (top or bottom) position. People then recommend to install this second variety. But would I then need to have an additional latch switch in front of the shelly? Or is the Shelly relay already essentially a latch switch itself? Could I not just install a spring loaded switch, behind it a Shelly and then have no issues as the switch would just give a short impulse to the Shelly relay to switch on/off and immdiately go back into its original position? Am I even making sense here lol [link] [comments] |
Home Automation vs Internet Security Posted: 08 Oct 2020 10:36 AM PDT I've searched this subreddit and there are no mentions of internet security or keeping hackers out that I can find. There are numerous accounts of hackers using IOT devices as a base to attack more valuable targets, like personal computers and security cameras. Am I just looking in the wrong subreddit or am I just being a tinfoil hat wearing fool to care about who can access my networks? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Oct 2020 06:02 PM PDT Hi, I just bought a set of smart bulb by Nooie which use Smartlife android app but the control are very basic. Is there a way to have more control like creating scenes based on a set of colors and choosing each one individually? There is "themes" but only one is waving between some colors but you can't change them. I'm also using Google Home but it doesn't seems to bring more options. Any advice would be appreciated. Thx [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Oct 2020 10:38 AM PDT I currently have a google mesh system, two pucks, 3000 sqft two story home. From my standpoint it's been a terrible system. The fire tv, nest protects, nest thermostats, and doorbell are CONSTANTLY offline. It can be frustrating. When I disconnect the google mesh and run a regular WiFi modem on 2.4 the devices work great. But because the google mesh does not distinguish between the two it has issues. My question is, what is the best mesh system, currently, that is able to have a 2.4 and 5g separate channels so that I could run 2.4 only on some devices and have great coverage throughout the home? Thanks for the help. [link] [comments] |
Recommendations on ZWave outlet with at least one USB port Posted: 08 Oct 2020 07:40 PM PDT I'm looking for a zwave outlet that has at least one USB port. Anyone have recommendations? Surprisingly my searches on Amazon yielded very few and those that came up were brands I didn't recognize, didn't have USB port or had few reviews. (To clarify, I'm looking for the outlet itself, not a plug) [link] [comments] |
Which Shelly devices can you connect additional sensors/switches to? Posted: 08 Oct 2020 08:03 AM PDT I understand that some of them have the GPIO ground pin connected to mains power so you cannot connect other devices (sensors, switches, etc) to GPIO while the shelly is connected to mains power. The problem is that there doesn't seem to be a clear answer on which devices this applies to. This page for example states that the shelly 1 has a `50% chance of being connected to the live AC wire` Does that mean that they changed the manufacturing process part-way through so now some devices are safe and some aren't? I also noticed on this page that shelly itself offers a temperature sensor addon for the shelly 1 and 1PM. Does that mean those are the only two that are capable of connecting additional sensors or just that they are the only two supported by that sensor? I am looking to do something similar to this, but with a shelly as the smart switch I really don't want to blow up a bunch of devices (and possibly my house) trying to figure this out. Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Any place to trade Google home for Alexa devices? Posted: 08 Oct 2020 04:54 PM PDT I have 4 Google home devices and would like to try out Alexa for a bit - anyone know if there's a subreddit to trade 1:1 or anyone interested? [link] [comments] |
Smart Lock - Setting Codes Remotely (Former Wink User) Posted: 08 Oct 2020 02:57 PM PDT Hi All, Wife and I owned a condo where we used a Schlage Connect and Wink Hub 2 to set door codes remotely. Since we were renting it on AirBnb, it was extremely convenient. Well we sold our condo and are buying a house in the same area, but wanted to seek suggestions from the community. Is the Schlage Connect still the best bet? Also, since Wink seems to be trending down (and is charging a subscription fee now), is there another hub that would allow me to set door codes remotely? Finally, I do want to eventually expand my home automation footprint, so something that has a broad ecosystem of things it plays nicely with is always an added bonus. TIA! [link] [comments] |

Switch to POE switch to camera? Posted: 08 Oct 2020 07:17 AM PDT Does anyone know if I have a non poe switch can I cat5 from that switch to a poe switch and then cat5 from my poe switch to cameras? Or does it have to go directly from poe to cameras? Alternatively do I even need a POE switch if I am planning on using nest cams since those require the poe splitter? [link] [comments] |
