SmartThings taken over by Aeotec? Posted: 07 Oct 2020 01:16 PM PDT I've been looking into /u/jphilebiz's post SmartThings going away? as it's hard to get stock in some places. And I think I've discovered that SmartThings is changing ownership. Stay with me:
So it looks like SmartThings isn't going away but that it's leaving the Samsung portfolio and has been bought by Samsung. Or Samsung has taken over Aeotec as well? But that feels less likely. What do you think? Am I reading into this too much? [link] [comments]

Only two switches have no neutral Posted: 07 Oct 2020 11:52 PM PDT Hello everyone! Been going around installing smart switches and am looking to install about 15 for my whole apartment. Things have been going very smoothly but two of my switches, in my kitchen and dining area, have no neutral. I don't know if this is strange that only two lack neutrals. How easy would it be to add neutrals to these two switches? From my limited understanding I could run neutral from that of the light fixture (which I've already gone into to install a chandelier), but I'm not sure how easy this would be. I know I could get a no neutral switch but from what I see they're generally more expensive and require a hub to pair with Alexa. I'm hoping to not have to spend more than putting in basic smart switches since I will only be here for another 2-3 years. [link] [comments]
Attic rat trap alert - simple solution needed! Posted: 07 Oct 2020 08:06 PM PDT So I have a bunch of rat traps in our attic, and I want to be alerted when one snaps. They're the plastic snap trap type, not the classic wooden/metal ones. What I'd like is some kind of super cheap, small alerting system. Nothing WiFi or hardwired. A small speaker, powered by a CR2032, that makes a sound when the trap snaps and wires separate. The battery can't be drained in the weeks/months between catching one. Any ideas? Posted: 07 Oct 2020 01:51 PM PDT I have two garage doors: 1) Chamberlain opener with MyQ built in 2) Plain Chamberlain opener without MyQ, but is MyQ compatible If I want to be able to control the second opener remotely, do I need to buy a hub or can I just buy the sensor? Is there a hub inside the first opener for the sensor to connect to as a base or am I not understanding properly? What is the difference between the hub and the sensor? Thanks in advance! M&S Intercom Doorbell Options? Posted: 07 Oct 2020 03:52 PM PDT So my house has an M&S Intercom system that connects every room together. It is a somewhat dated system, but it bears resemblance to a Nu-Tone system. Anyway, I want to be able to track when the doorbell is pressed. However, since this is an intercom, that is obviously going to be a challenge. What might be my options? I would prefer NOT to invest in ring or nest because I have my doubts about integrations with our home assistant setup. Not to mention the privacy concerns. Is there a way I can tap into the wiring and detect when the button is pressed or is there something else I need to do? Im kinda thinking if maybe I could have a simple esp or raspberry pi to watch the button press on the doorbell and send a network based notification through home assistant, while still maintaining the chime. Im actively searching with very little success. Any experience and input will be greatly appreciated! I dont mind getting my hands dirty with soldering or programming, so all suggestions are welcome! Looking for a EU/U.K. Deadbolt that fits my euro cylinder and ‘August’ mounting plate (in the U.K.) Posted: 07 Oct 2020 04:52 PM PDT Hello! I have a nice new August lock (well two in fact) and also the adaptable Danalock Euro Cylinder. I need the deadbolt part where the screws line up with the mounting plate. I already have a backset (I think it's called that) but the screws do not line up so I need one that a Euro Cylinder can fit in and also the mounting plate screws can fit to it. Photo below with blue dots representing where the holes need to be so the bolts/screws that hold the mounting plate against the door line up through the door and lock: https://imgur.com/gallery/xtTdjZ3 At the moment I have just screwed the plate to the wooden door but would like to use the threaded metal bolts so the mounting plate is fixed to the lock and door, not just the door. Preferably on Amazon or somewhere next day delivery in the U.K. Cheers PS, I mentioned before that I do have the correct Euro cylinder and keys etc already, I just need the backset/deadbolt that matches the mounting plate. Posted: 07 Oct 2020 09:20 AM PDT So I'm not one that has much in the way of home automation. I currently have a Hive to control my heating and a free Google Nest mini I received recently. Once I become a homeowner in the next few years I will likely start to go deeper down the rabbit hole. I understand that there are a whole bunch of ecosystems, with some devices that work together, and some that don't. I want to know, is there a PCPartPicker style website out there that can help to build and design what I would want to achieve and show and compare compatible parts to pick from? Posted: 07 Oct 2020 10:45 AM PDT I have a PTZ dome IP camera available. I can setup the device in my network and get the RTSP stream to put into a home automation setup. But I don't know how I can control the camera and pin, tilt and zoom and automate the movement. Is there a protocol to do that? [link] [comments]
Outdoor and Indoor Camera Questions Posted: 07 Oct 2020 09:39 AM PDT I am new to home automation but am pretty decent with technical things. I am planning to go with Hubitat for a security and automation hub. I want to add some outdoor cameras and maybe one indoor camera. What are some good cameras to look into and are there any good solutions to power them without drilling holes? Has anyone come up with a way to get a cable out a window with a flat cable or a battery that will last with constant recording? I want something removable as we plan to move within the next year. What are your thoughts on an indoor camera? I get the privacy issues so thats what makes me hesitant but sometimes it would be nice. For recording are there any combinations that seem to work well or some that just don't especially with Hubitat? Thanks for any help. [link] [comments]

Posted: 07 Oct 2020 12:55 PM PDT I'm fairly new to home automation, but have several Google Mini's, the house is all Hue'd up and we have a couple of smart plugs. Looking to add some door sensors so we can start automating things a bit better. What's the best starter stuff to go with? Looking at Zigbee things but apparently they need a hub & the hue hub isn't a Zigbee hub? So, what's the recommended next-step for me? I guess a zigbee-compatible hub and a few zigbee-compatible sensors? Should add I'm in the UK so that may change/limit my options? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
Posted: 07 Oct 2020 11:00 AM PDT Does anyone have any direction on how to automate a small water dispenser over sauna rocks? I'd ideally like to press a remote control button and have it dispense a little water. It's too hot in the sauna for a phone, but maybe controlled via a remote, or on a 5 min timer. The idea is exactly this Harvia Autodose, but unfortunately it's not sold in the US: https://harvia.fi/en/product/autodose-sauna-water-dispenser/ I'm new to the space, but I looked at some plant watering automations - I don't think that option dispenses enough water - perhaps if there was a mister. Hoping there's some guide out there. [link] [comments]
SmartThings actions with Google home Posted: 07 Oct 2020 09:47 AM PDT So SmartThings is offering new actions with Google Home as long as you can connect the two accounts (which I've done) and add your SmartThings devices in Google home and put it in a room, now the issue is once I connect the account I don't really see an option to add my range to smart home, or how I would use SmartThings actions [link] [comments]
Is IKEA motion sensor any good ? Posted: 07 Oct 2020 08:11 AM PDT Hi all I'm running HA with NodeRed on a Pi4 and ConbeeII I'm setting my desk/table to activate my office lamps when I sit and keep them on as long as I'm here. It works quite well but I've got the feeling it may "miss" me from time to time if my legs don't really change position. What's the overall rating of this motion detector and should I change for another one ? Here's the flow (very basic):

Posted: 07 Oct 2020 09:19 AM PDT I'm just starting to automate my home, and have been looking at the Wyze Sense door sensors for quite a while. Is there any reason why NOT to go with them, or any better alternatives? I am only thinking of using 2 door sensors since I live in a small condo. [link] [comments]
Smart lights and smart switches recommendations for open concept living area Posted: 07 Oct 2020 07:19 AM PDT Hello, I am renovating the entire main living area of our new house into an open concept. We will have a living room, dining room, kitchen and entryway all open concept. I would like to incorporate smart lights and smart switches as I am trying to slowly build a smart home. What is the most efficient way of incorporating lights and switches into this space? I am interested in functions such as automatic turn on when I get home. Being able to dim lights and color changing lights for different moods would be amazing as well. Any recommendations would be helpful as I am not a tech person. Thank you for your time. Controlling Multiple Sockets from Single Lightswitch controlled socket. Posted: 07 Oct 2020 07:25 AM PDT Hi! I've been trying to google/reddit search a solution, but I can't seem to quite nail the search terms. I have a wall socket controlled by the a light switch. There are additional sockets in the room. I'm looking for something to plug into the "master socket" that would turn on/off nodes plugged into the other sockets. I've considered just putting wifi (hue) bulbs in and going voice control, but would prefer to just "flip switch, 3 lights in different sockets on, flip switch, 3 lights off". [link] [comments] |
